I bet there are very few subscribers who envy that brutal experience. Amazing job guys. I think Uma is a 'Phoenix' you grind her down & she arises from the dust.
*ashes. (But close enough)
Few subscribers? Surely there isn’t 1. Lol😂.
I’m just watching someone else’s, what I consider, nightmare. I was very much hoping the ultrasound would save them.
But much credit to K&D, I think they are insane, but my admiration and respect 🫡 is immeasurable.
@@kodiak7 but that is why we watch them. Taking a sailboat they paid very little for and rebuilding it to fit their needs. Most people would not do that.
I am currently redesigning the interior of a 22 foot boat, twice the work wouldn't be fun but it would be hella rewarding and thats what fiberglass work is all about..just keep imagining being done.
I love the fact that, unlike other sailing channels, you guys are putting in the HARD work to restore and improve your boat rather than begging subscribers and patrons to “give money” for a “new” boat. I have unsubscribed from other sailing channels that have done that - so Bravo Zulu to you!!
I have unsubscribed from people for the same reason if you're too damn lazy to put into work to fix your boat then you really don't need to be boating the channels I watch everybody works on their own boat and I'm proud to say that I will not help anybody buy a brand new boat
@@claybornlewis276most other sailing channels have become really quite dull. Either babies, babies, babies… or look at our new catamaran. Not really interested in either. Love kids… but had my own and as all older parents learn eventually… no one is really that interested in hearing about your kids… I’ve had 25 years of my own being cute LOL
I aim to get back into sailing and my boat will be smallish and cheapish and the channels with expensive brand new boats are totally meaningless to me.
Whereas Uma is my kind of boat :)
Agreed
True words. Same for me. It's the projects that keep me watching, too. It's interesting to see the ideas, the approach, the adaptions to their daily life, the going-electric, aesthetical points and so on - done by their own hands. All in all they do a good job keeping the content many-sided.
the same with all the "Van-life" channels. Give us money for a bigger Van because its to small for 2 people to life in it and do all the work for you guys... *unsubscribe* is my answer.
Maybe a diy dust collector cyclone to act as a pre-filter would be an option to keep the clogging of your vacuum at a mininimum level. You guys rock, taking on this massive project is a true challenge!
I was just about to make the same suggestions…
I bought a duststopper that just goes on top of a 5 gallon bucket. Its a bit expensive for what it is but honestly for the time it would take to make my own and make it fit properly to vacuum hoses it was worth it just to have it.
The dust collector is the best option, but needs at least one extra plastic bucket-in-the-bucket and even some plywood holders inside to prevent collapse. I have had such a setup for a long time. It's just a must-have for any fiberglass work onboard. At least 99% of the dust ends up inside. And I have to clean the vacuum anyway, but once a week after active grinding...
There’s a few slightly larger scale variations on the dust handling theme for woodworking from places like Machine Mart (UK).
The cheaper ones aren’t exactly industrial rugged but they have a decent capacity and are good enough for this job.
Dust Deputy for the win!
This is *exactly* the kind of content I love from you two.
Do you like how they're suffering? ))
Did you@@ArtemKlochko , read any Chekov ?
I love it when they show off the work. Not enviable, but fascinating! @@ArtemKlochko
@@mikealexander7126 I'm joking, sorry if you get it wrong
I love the new acronym for CAD, (cardboard aided design) aboard UMA. 😂😂😂
Next time you look for vacuums check out the Dust cyclone collector that attaches to the vacuum.
Boat Project Apocalypse-I love the earmuffs where all you can hear is your own heartbeat.
After all this hard work, everyone's busted, tired, and done for the day.
Henry is still smiling, although he sucks at everything, he's the best help on board!
AWE!!!! It's true! That little vac has been though hell and back with us and is still kick'n. We love him!
The good thing about a complete renovation that you do is that you know the boat's strong and weak sides. Wishing you good wind 😀⛵
I have been watching you guys for years. Your wisdom and motivation at such a young age has been so inspiring. I wish I could have grown up watching you and all your adventures. I believe my adventures would have started sooner. Thanks for all the dreams.
The vibrating tool is called an Oscillating Tool. We call ours “Betty” because it’s easier to say than oscillating.
That my friends is called sweat equity. Best of all they're reusing UMA so she'll hopefully go another 50+ years as a sustainable boat.
CAD = Cardboard Aided Design. Best line in the episode! Way to persevere through the hard stuff to get to the good stuff! I will deffinatly be checking White Powder out.
My favorite tool for removing fiberglass dust from skin is a sticky paper lint roller. Roll it over your arms before showering/washing and it really helps.
All hail the Pipe of Coolness. It is magical and lovely and worthy of worship. The Pipe of Coolness has no equal. Give thanks and be grateful to Her.
Don't buy the couch!...BUY HAMMOCK! you guys rock! ❤
Wish someone woulda told me thos at 18
Oh yes, they are. It's hard not to rock in a hammock! ;-)
One rime when I was desperate for employment, I worked in a factory building fibreglass boats. The company did not think that they were obliged to provide any kind of personal protection, so I know how itchy that stuff can be. I was advised to take a cold shower when I got home, so that the pores of my skin didn’t open up.
A whole perspective on "oh glorious sanding" what a job, like your balanced lifestyle. Well done.
The work ethic you two show in your projects is astonishing! I can't wait to see the redesign come together.
Kika's rocking those air-guitar skills...
Oh goodness, that was hilarious, that Jam session minus the jams. Super cute.🤣🤣
Many people are jealous of your lifestyle. They think you're living life off of other peoples backs. Well you guys summed it up in one comment when you said : After a full day of grinding we needed to take a day off, so we sat in our hammocks and did more computer work... RUclipsrs are some of the hardest and most dedicated workers out there. I couldn't do it. No wonder many of them go thru depression. It's a hard life, luckily with many rewards in the end.
Thank you for sharing your lifestyle with us, you guys are awesome!!!!
now the fun can begin
I do admire your enthousiasm. Being a boat guy working fiberglass repairs I know what a big job you are in. You will be proud when it's done. I will be proud of you both. Like all of your projects. Greetz John.
As a Boatbuilder I would like to make the observation, that I would expect an offshore Yacht to have had the Hull hand laid up, in an air conditioned mold room, in one
continued operation. Isophthalic resin being used, and an Epoxy barrier coat under the anti fouling. For safety at sea this would be the least you could do. I hope the repair being done to Uma is as good or better, for the sake of future sailors safety. I do like your Chanel, and superb sailing ability, both of you, { good luck }
Glad you started back on the boat work. There are a gazillion RV, camping, travel channels but very few channels who design and build back their sailboats.
I imagine Uma will be good for another 30 years+.
When you were taking a break, with the Tyvek suits and all the other gear, all I could think of was the quote from The Martian "I'm [you're] going to have to science the shit out of this."
I actually enjoy your build videos more than the sailing videos.
It’s an oscillating multitool. Secondly, you should look into a cyclonic dust collector to put between your tool and your vacuum to collect most of the dust. OK maybe I should’ve said you should have looked into because it’s too late now😊
Good to see the smiles and goofy dancing . It means ....
You're doing it right by taking breaks when you need them . Sanding is a big job ,
then relaminating also a big job . The main thing is health ,sanity and safety . I can't wait until this is behind you and you are back out on the Blue , sailing again .
I'm sure that Uma will be Orca proof , if not ... paint her black and white like an Orca .
Take care guys ! ❤
🇨🇦 Ottawa.
I am very proud of you too as well. This is the worst job I ever did on my boat. I was just grinding and scooping and then vacuuming the dust with shop vac. On the top of it I was almost twice of your age. Keep it up, you are amazing couple.
I have to say you guys must REALLY love that boat. Any sane person would have just bought a different boat. But crazy people are fun, and I really enjoy your design work. Have fun you crazy people!
Not sure how much you think a new boat cost … especially knowing we’d rip everything out either way. Experimenting by fixing uma up is much less .
I think that forearm itchy-ness is from the vibration transmitted from the tool into your forearms rather than the fiberglass dust.
I could not imagine doing this work - true love I guess - And definitely enjoy life while grinding down your boat.
Exciting times indeed for Uma's big makeover. She's a beauty.
For the vacuum cleaner, use a cyclonic separator before the vacuum. This could prevent the vacuum cleaner from overheating ( As most of the dust would be taken out of the air that makes it to your vacuum). Also you will also want to check your A/C to see how much dust got inside of it, and clean it out.
Another trick is to use camel pack filled with ice water, to keep you hydrated. This does add more bathroom breaks.... The idea to only sand every second day, will also help to keep you more hydrated, as you recover on the second day. An industrial full face shield with respirator would be ideal, for exposed skin, as your suit head piece would form around the face shield.
My biggest concern with the sanding was if you broke through the hull.
Great to see you back into boat work. Get a cyclone dust collector for your vacuum cleaner it collects the dust before it gets to the vacuum cleaner so it doesn’t clog up. Looking forward to seeing your new layout plans and watching Uma get put back together better than ever. 👍
Made me itch just watching all that grinding on the hull.
The 'vibrating' tool is called an oscillating tool. Thanks for the playlist, im always down for a solid themed one lol.
In our family we call the multi-oscillating tool thingy the RABID HORNET. Ours is pretty worn from lots of drywall work, so it is especially loud and obnoxious.
The little whistled outro song at the end of the episodes makes me smile every time (andd don't tell snyone, but its actually made me tear up a few times too). I sometimes find myself whistling it myself when I'm finishing up some little project around the house. You should sell it as a ringtone.
Your forearms are probably itchy because you have your hands above your elbows and sweat from your hands is moving the dust into your suit and down your forearms. Taping the gloves to the suit might help.
I love seeing you two grow in so many aspects, beyond your sailing ability and video editing ability. Years ago when you were younger you wouldn't have given yourself space to recuperate and heal before diving into another day's work. Now you are taking the time and space to find a balance between boat projects and your life of exploration. I also see how you have grown as a couple! There is nothing you cannot do, if you do it together. I look forward to more project content and exploration in the Land Rover. Lots of love from Michigan
I know there’s a delay in the videos, but if you’re still in there all the time or if anybody asked to do something like this, it pays to put a little vinegar in the water. It does something to keep you from dehydrating.
It is sooo easy to say, Yeah! Fix it! Do it yourself! I really really admire your spirit, love for your boat, and hard work!
Boat work seems to be popular on youtube. Personally I do like to learn things from watching others work on their boats and I also enjoy watching people enjoy the fruits of their labors.
Also, if you did buy a different boat, even a new boat, it will come with it's own issues that you would have to deal with. When you are finished with this round of UMA work you will have a new boat and know every thing there is to know about her.
Bravo! Nothing like hard hot work to make memories. Some of the best times I remember, I was filthy, sweating, and exhausted. Go get 'em!
Like the Prodigy, Out of Space moves!
Just want to give you guys a hug, really feel for ya'll, this is such hard work! Thank you for showing that you can bring a positive attitude to these soul grinding jobs. You guys are awesome!
Cover yourselves with baby powder it really helps the itch. Powder helps stop the glass shards getting into your pores. Also use cold water to wash, when your finished. This also helps keep the itch at bay.
Awesome! Don't buy new, fix what you have. Love this mindset!
Being ex mechanic and journeyman carpenter i feel ur pain. I cant ever pay ppl to do my work. Everytime ive tried to avoid the suffering i end up redoing the work. Curse of being skilled at trades. And big fear of mine with my future sailboat as ill prolly rebuild entire thing against logic
I always found it best to just grind without using a vacuum attachment, and then just scoop up the Dust, then let it settle, and then go in with a vacuum for the final cleanup. Some vacuums have a pre-filter, which will extend the life of the actual filter.
But anyways, you got it done, which is the dirtiest and most monotonous least favorite task to do. Now you get to move on to the fun stuff.
lol, the shots of you guys scooping handfuls of the white powder really drives home why you're listening to that playlist! it's like an AI got the prompt "annual cocaine harvest in sardinian boat yard"
OMG ! I've done lots of Fiberglass work. Your work brings back many memories, Yop done good kids, I'm impressed.
Yeah that grinding is horrible. Great thing you got it done!
You can tape yourself into the bunny suit and then reinforce the rip prone areas of the suit. But upgrading the dust collection is best.
You two have put boat projects on a new scale. Great work and commitment to rebuilding your home.
Hi,Patience…perseverance…teamwork,and time,you are doing a great job.Cheers,Roly🇬🇧.
Amazing… my mother’s favorite long word …sticktoittiveness… you guys got it….
"This too shall pass"- Og Mandino
Oh, just because I haven't mentioned it in a while, Uma video's are the most fun of anything on RUclips to watch.. Fun-factor = Perfection.
RESPECT .. you folk are true workaholics ..
To catch more dust run the hose into a bucket ahead of the vacuum, wood shops have diagrams and schematics to do this.
You have the knack for finding the PERFECT music.
The tool is an Oscillating Multi-Tool. The action is oscillating and it has multiple applications (cutting, sanding, etc).
David
We just call it "the vibrator"😅
Hi guys, the glass you were grinding is Fabmat. Until today, I didn't realize Uma was from Nanaimo. (I worked at Nanaimo shipyard ) so I've been there and did that.
I absolutely love you two! You got me through 2020-21 and still keep me going!
Absolutely amazing.Grinding fibre glass is most probably the thing that can befall anyone.Ask me.Looking forward to your interior designs.I know it is going to set a new standard in boat interior design.Yoo two rock.Greetings from a still cold and wet South Africa.
Love the tip with the airpods and ear defenders!
It pays to take great care of yourselves. Is shows! You both look fit as a fit and fresh as ever in the midst of a project that can grind you down..
I think it is very good that you paced yourselves. This is a huge project, and I am impressed that you are even taking it on.
When building my own tiny boat, I often had to quit when the disgust quotient started getting too high. Mistake after mistake. But as often as I quit, I came back. I fixed my mistakes as best I could, and now have a little sailboat of my own design.
Best steps are boat work steps!!! You can put a centrifuge in front of your vacuum to remove the bulk of the dust from the airstream so that it doesn't put so much stress on your vacuum filter and fan motor.
Exactly this, and could be used for more than one grinder/guard simultaneously. I use a vortex mounted on a 30L drum with my DeWalt shop vac when I do all my woodwork and dusty DIY projects, and it works brilliantly. Perfect for the work on Uma, but I appreciate that has probably all finished by the time this episode was released.
@@Ian-gf8idI think these episodes are at least 3 months in the past, if not more.
@@bdshort Too late for the grinding work, hence my comment, but they've got a lot more work to do in terms of the total refit and have already made it clear that they are not to rush it.
was going to say that too! a cyclone dust separator for $50 mounted on a bucket is surprisingly effective
You two are a BLAST!! I laugh and cheer you on every episode, but this one ROCKS, KIDS!! Love you so much from the Philippines. Be safe always 💞
Might consider some type of air scrubber. Fairly simple to set up with a box fan and high quality hvac filter.
With the amount of grinding you have in your future I would invest in a full face mask/filter. This is bringing back horrible memories of my old fibreglassing "career " glad we bought a steel boat 😂
Man-O-Man, I’ve done plenty of boat work in my life but that is one project I don’t think I would ever undertake! Fantastic job guys and it only gets better from here. Excited to see the new design.
A few years ago I built the bathroom in our basement with such an outfit. For this I had to mill slots in the concrete with an angle grinder to lay pipes and cables. I couldn't see anything after a short time, despite the vacuum cleaner. I was done after three days and vowed never to do anything like that again. Respect to both of you for pulling this off for weeks.
Hats off to you guys. How do you stay so happy doing that ? Uma will be forever grateful to you.
Love the dancing with light effects , could be part of a music video 😁
Real ownership and valuable design experience. Probably future consultants. But always a good watch
"Oh Glorious Sanding!"
You guys have become an institute in boat rebuilding in letting what no to do against actually what it looks like and how to do by showing all the right tools that work from good to better to best. The hammock office takes off
Should have, could have...... Ah nevermind that way of thinking. You did what you knew best to do to do what with what I love to what you do. Do not apologize. You guys are great. I love yall.

Sailing Uma under construction. That A/C will die with smoke
@15:55 loved it, inflate the bunny suits with cold air! Epic truth about grinding f-glass
You guys need a real shop vac and a cyclone separator. That will make a huge difference in how well things work.
I would also buy a positive ventilation respiratory for what you are doing. They're commonly used by welders.
Before starting the rebuild I recommend you get with specialists to help with the design. Even splurge, get a architect. ........ Oh wait, I know who would be perfect.
P.S. been with you from the start, big fan! 😍
This is one of the best episodes of Breaking Bad I've seen! 🙂
Can’t imagine doing that grinding 😢 Painful to watch. Glad that’s pretty much over-
That's one hell of an office!
I've been a professional cutler (knife maker) for the last 22 years, and I spend 8-10 hours a day grinding steel blades in basically the same gear you guys use. It's like being alone in a spaceship, with a concert in my head. I think I liked this video more than the sightseeing adventure videos.
You guys get major sailor street cred for this....y'all are gangsta.
Hoping you have all the grinding done, but here's a tip from an old shipyard worker: A tub full of cool water with a couple of quarts of vinegar mixed in will eliminate the itching of the fiberglas. Works for the fiberglass you're working with and also for fiberglass insulation.
Two wonderful people. Also, it is a wonderful time to find the channel. There are lots of videos to watch, and I get to see Uma go from this to what she will eventually look like.
Tip #1 Use a cold cream or moisturiser on your skin before you grind fibreglass. It stops the itching and washes out of your skin with all the fibres
Hey folks, this has always been a great video channel which we have all enjoyed, just a "heads up" for you. When I use grinders or sanders & I have them hooked up to a vacuum (in my case an Aquavac 18 litre Wet & Dry) I have a Titan DCA300 Dust Collector unit fitted in line between the power tool & the vacuum. I have four filters which are easily washable & they vastly reduce the frequency of replacing the vacuum filters which are not cheap. The Triton units in the U.K. are about £50 sterling, probably cheaper where you are.... Looking at the amount of work you have to do I think that they may help. Keep up the good work and thank you....
This is next level togetherness. I thought building a house with my wife was a $4it show... You guys rock! Can't wait to see Uma ship shipshape again... With minimal squeeks!
