Hey, Aspiring Comedians. I'm building a stand-up comedy memberships site and need your help. If you know what you want or need to learn to get better at stand-up comedy, please explain it in a comment. Then I can make a video or design a lesson that will fulfill your needs. Break a Funny Bone! GD
The main thing that stand-up comedy and music have in common is rhythm. It’s not coincidental that some of the most successful stand-up comics also play the drums. And they have a very distinct rhythm in the way they perform their stand up. Apparently, Hannah Gadsby was actually tapping her fingers on the desk in particular rhythmic patterns as she was writing her comedy, directly imparting a rhythm to how she would perform it. That being said, I know, I still have a lot to learn, so I am listening.
Akin to music and poetry. The rhythm of voice and words. Great observation.
Brilliant! :D
So kind.
You might understand comedy but you don't understand music. Saying set up and punch is joke structure is like saying verse and chorus is song structure. They are both order of arrangement, which is a part of the structure.
You're smart enough to miss the point.
Can you imagine this as an elective in college!
Stand Up Comedy can be taught!
😃
I was thinking today about this and I would summarize it as "comedic tension." It's that expectation of what you think you know. It's a natural flow of the universe. It exist in story telling structure. And it's exist in sex. You think you know what sex is like but you have to feel it to know. The biggest expectation that's a misdirection.
I'm talking about the mental mechanism that creates the "tension" which leads to expectation and facilitates the mind''s ability it to trick itself. I'm not hiding this info. I just didn't want to put it online as many comedy teachers around the world are lifting my theory and using it to make money. Fucked and amazing at the same time. Check out my blog on this subject: stand-upcomedy.com/blog/how-to-write-jokes-joke-structure-part-4/ Better to start at Part 1, but here's your shortcut. Cheers.
How to fix near-miss jokes...that's what I need to know --
Does your follow my definition of joke structure? If so sit down and try tweeting it also don’t forget about the relationship with the audience.
@@gregdeancomedy Thanks for the reply! Got your 'Step-by-Step' book and have read thru it...now am starting again with Ch. 2, learning joke structure and how to diagram. Just discovered this youtube channel, and will post more questions as they come up
You coined the term joke structure?
Yes. Find it before I wrote about it and detract my statement. Enjoy.
I wish more people understood this model. What passes for stand-up today...
Me too
whatever. He only talks about what "joke structure" is not. Doesn't give away any positive insights.
I got tired of so-called comedy experts saying "setup" and "punch" are jokes structure. They are not. It would be like saying, "I want to learn the fundamentals of music," and the teacher say, "It's a song." No that's just one way to express music, not a fundamental. Same with comedy, setup and punch are one way to express humor. The lesson of the video is to clarify that point. Sorry about not giving real joke structure, but I'm also fed up with people ripping off my work and making money from it. Hope you are well.
@@gregdeancomedy Thanks for the response! Watching your other videos and learning from them.
@@gregdeancomedy you can't own an idea
@@zacnewford An idea written down or spoken if original can be claimed as yours...
