Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

I am a big fan of Tim Miller. I think these conversations between dems and former republicans are healing my soul.
That's like being a big fan of one of the Minions from Despicable Me.
@@jfrsnjhnsn is that wrong? I don't understand what this comparison means.
Americans aren't divided by race, religion, or education. They're divided by whether or not they believe the horseshit being spewed out by Fox News.
Gotta say I love this duo. Wouldn’t be mad at a Tim and Jon weekly or semi-weekly pod.
This!
Also me.

Hell yeah! ❤

Frenemy of the Pod, Tim Miller
lol jon n tim should totally do a weekly or maybe even just monthly pod together called frenemies or frenemies of the pod. I would absolutely love that. lol
Tin and Jon, great candidates for the future...hoping👍
👍🏼😊
@@timfriday9106"Frenemies" is just going to remind people of Ethan and Trisha which is NOT branding this company wants lol
@@Lina_unchained i dont even know what that means...
I love when Tim’s on to remind people of old school conservative talking points like “immigration is good for the economy” and “tariffs don’t punish other countries- they basically impose a hidden tax on American citizens”!
Those aren't conservative talking points, they're liberal talking points. It's just stuff that conservatives were willing to give ground on in order to try to attract liberals away from progressives/leftists that dominated in the FDR-60s era. The ones they succeeded in winning over called themselves 'libertarians' and made up a decent part of the GOP coalition, but they weren't actually very conservative, and ultimately they have been run over by more genuinely conservative factions of the GOP coalition: the religious right and ethno-nationalists chiefly among them. The GOP still needs their money since libertarians tend to be libertarian out of business interest, and thus wealthy potential donors, so they get tax cuts thrown their way in exchange for the big money donations and super pacs, but rhetorically they're practically cast out of the public sphere; except on gun rights. That's something that both libertarians and white nationalists are in favor of, though you can always tell the difference by seeing how they feel about non-whites walking around strapped and how they feel about non-whites getting gunned down by scared cops who are afraid they might be armed. Apart from that, nowadays both parties are going hard after the blue collar vote, so economic populism gets all the airtime.
Didn't Trump hurt the farmers with tariffs?
@@lindaflesch7303 Yes. He promised them the tariffs would only hurt China and then, when American farmers were inevitably hurt, he had to provide subsidies to pretty much bail them out of the mess he created.
@@nHautamaki Tariffs tend to be more of a left-wing protectionist policy, but also do happen with heavily nationalist movements, regardless of political leaning. I don’t know how old you are but in the last 15 or 20 years, you may be correct but over the broader scope of American history that’s just not true
@@jolness1 Tariffs are just anti liberal populism, where populism can be defined as 'policy that doesn't work the way people think it will, but is popular anyway'. It can be done by populist illiberal regimes for conservative or for egalitarian (aka leftist) reasons. And in fact many authoritarian regimes deploy a blend of both egalitarian and conservative policies. And this kind of analysis works on any human society of any time period, not just America of the recent past.

It's too complicated a thought for our reductive media who feel like they have to boil down every issue so a 5-year-old can understand it.
It’s normal in a complex situation …
I mean… that’s how I’ve consistently thought about it. So it’s normal for me. 🤷🏻♀️

THE BEST PART OF MY DAY --> watching these two discuss the issues... wonderful !
I did not want this to end. I could listen to these two for hours..Such educated, thoughtful, well-informed podcasters together as well as individually.
More of you two would be great
You forgot humorous. They do good comedy with good commentary. Lovett is especially quick. Best.

You are right. The humor is one of the things I love most. I read that it is off-putting for some but we need to laugh sometime. You got it! I appreciate you.
I'd watch these two every day!
This is the fourth show im listening to tim miller talk about this topic on today. Dude is busy
Yeah…apparently he’s also doing a live show in Philly tonight as well! Dude’s probably on the same stuff Biden was on during the SOTU ;)

Thanks for a healthy and stimulating conversation between the two of you.
As someone who just spent 14 hours in jail for smoking weed on a sidewalk in Georgia, it makes a huge difference for young people
Sorry to hear that! My kin are from thereabouts. Are you planning to leave the state or are you a part of the resistance? 😁 🌊💙🌊🇺🇸🗳🗽
@@kookootrix1978he’s a traveling journalist who covers politics and Scientology. Not necessarily their overlap. He covers rallies and events in southern locations.
That's brutal!! Just for weed!
14 HOURS? That seems like a very light sentence. Why did they bother? It's an inconvenience, sure, but there still are people serving life sentences in Texas for smoking pot. Laws were crazy draconian when boomers began smoking...and the jazz musicians faced much worse than we did long before we were born. 14 Hours?
So glad the world has changed and you can partake. Enjoy it now--it does not work the same now that I'm old. I'd gladly spend 14 hours in jail to feel high like I did in my 20s. It's legal here in Oregon. Stores sell it every mile or so...Very strong, tho. They give you full scientific facts on every kind--dozens to choose from. Is in indica or sativa, or a combo? Is it this percent or that? Or just all CBDs and no THC? Or super-high in THC? Will it make you paranoid, drowsy, energized, mellow, zonked out, or whatever? And the world's dirtiest trick ever? I don't enjoy anything but the smell.
Schedule III will not help you with that unfortunately, unless you go to a doctor to get a prescription. It is still a heavily restricted class of drugs.
I greatly appreciate having Tim's sane, rational counterpoints and it reminds me of the "good" times between D & R parties of the past before newt and the christian right.

Tim's got seven podcasts a week over at The Bulwark. You should check it out.
I never miss an episode of The Pod and The Bulwark.
Tim said it's hard to imagine it being acceptable to target a particular religious or ethnic group, but right after 9/11, so many Americans DID target anyone that they thought looked Muslim and treated them like terrorists, with violence, hate speech, name-calling, & discrimination!
Right?!
Yes, and the OKC bomber was assumed to be an Islamic terrorist before we found out he was the farthest thing from that. But that was also a generation ago already. And while Islamophobia still exists in terrible ways, it doesn't get forgiven from the far left the way anti-Jeiwsh hate does. "Anti-Zionism is not anti-Semitism" is not universally true (mainly because everyone seems to have a different definition of what Zionism actually is), but that phrase becomes a shield for plenty of actual anti-Semitism. Student groups can protest atrocities without making another subset of students feel unsafe on their own campus.
Exactly this. Glad I wasn't the only one who thought of this immediately when he said that so off-handidly.
And still ongoing today. There have been numerous pro-zionist protests in DC attended by senior (bipartisan) members of Congress that have been chock full of freakishly racist attacks on Palestinians. To put it kindly, Tim has a blind spot on this one. He doesn't even notice the anti arab and muslim bigotry as bigotry because it's so acceptable, especially in his old Republican circles.
Still do. I could not imagine a group of muslims today marching in the street not getting totally frogmarched by jack-booted riot police.
Thanks, all, for the great conversation. Keep doing the hard work. We appreciate it
Time has shown that almost every protest for progress and/or moral issues has been correct. It’s amazing that people memory hole that fact.
War is never humane.
I was so excited you brought Tim Miller to your live show in Austin!
The Time Magazine interview was HORRIFYING. There’s no way he can spin this interview in a good way. His vision of a 2025 America is 1984 Orwellian dystopia. Men and women, get out and vote! Urge your friends and neighbors to vote too. We can’t be complacent about this.
The Time magazine Donald interview reminded me of Agenda 47 and Project 2025. If he wins, the fascist hellscape will come to America.
@@lisawall9068your taxes are already paying for a white supremacist genocide. Any state that dares question the hegemonic power of American capitalism is starved or overthrown. Politicians are funded by, and act solely in the interest of, corporations. Workers’ rights are a farce. Fascism is here.
He IS 1984 incarnate
@@lisawall9068 It kind of seems that he might have heard Kevin Roberts say Project2025 is for any Republican nominee to follow, not just Trump, so he wanted his own 'blue print' more on his brand. Hence the bullet point videos with remedial sound bites vs. the 'dry' lengthy legalize of P2025. It should be noted that P2025 specifically outlines over-reaching powers he can use to overturn any State legislation he would want to. So the entire States rights narrative is completely false.

Hey it's the hatred that sucks. The way they are flattening Gaza indiscriminately is horrific. But none of that is the fault of citizens on either side of this. BIBI has gone nuts, HAMAS is nuts, and both are making radicals of young people.
Well said. The hatred is toxic!
This is just “All Lives Matter” for spineless do-nothing libs.
Absolutely agree
Truer words have never been spoken.
Why did Trump allow an interview with Time magazine? Same reasons he let Bob Woodward interview him: he doesn't read, he's not very bright, and none of his advisors could convince him how stupid this was.
And he LOOOOVES the headlines!
He wanted the cover.
Thank God his arrogance and stupidity know no bounds!! 😂😂😂🌊💙🌊🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🗳🗽
@andywinger4197 I think part of it is he felt relatively comfortable with the interviewer and he also has a hard on for Time mag. Also he thinks he can convince anyone of anything, he way overestimates his ability to sway people with his BS. He thinks he can talk his way in or out of any subject or topic while most often not having a clue about what he's talking about. As many people close to him have said he's lazy AF (meaning he won't bother to study the issue)and is NOT even partially well versed on most any topic. His quote: "Who knew health care was so hard". Answer EVERYONE!
Trump wanted another REAL TIME cover. They need a bi-cover. One said his dreams of a 2d term, the other side reality! Him sleeping at the counsel table.
Look how photo-shopped this is--no ugly blue suit and long red tie. Charcoal suit and CGI to take 80 lbs off his bod, thin his thunder thighs, put the labia neck in the shadows, cover the diaper. He never looks like this. This will be hanging in every room at MAL.
Tim and Jon are an obvious match (professionally, and as content providers)! They are my 2 favorite political pundits.
What makes them so good is their media savvy. This is so important. Marshall McLuhan was right! The message is the medium is the message.

OMG, Tim! MONTHS ago, I told this to my husband: I'm on Team ESH wrt the Israel/Gaza war (yes, hubby and I are avid Redditors). :)
We’re facing a terrifying future with Trump looming once again.
Trump isn't the whole problem. MAGA is.. he's just let them and their outdated and racist ideology back into the light. Sure, a percentage of people worship him.. but the scarier faction of MAGA are using him to escape the darkness
As opposed to other countries facing a terrifying future with Biden/democrats in power. The water lapping at the door might wake you guys up.
I prefer to call it dystopian, depraved, unacceptable. The word "terrifying" conveys fear, and that's what bullies like Trump prey upon.
not really. trump obama biden bush clinton
all these presidents come and go and talk a lot and all kind of shit happens, 9/11, jan 6, this, that, financial crisis, gaza crisis, at the end, america moves on, nothing happens at home, even vietnam is nothing, at everybody said it was terrifying when it was going on....... america survived vietnam too.........
Yes, he's more emboldened with every nonsensical syllable. Party regurgitates his rhetoric in Congressional Hearings, especially after their Midweek Freedom Caucus Breakfasts. Today trying to say Biden is increasing the deficit when in fact he brought down Trump's $7.8 deficit spending by a Trillion $ already. Next year's budget out so on track for decrease spending of $3.2 trillion (may be over 10 years,.like many of Biden policy). 👍
AHAHAHAHAHA!!! Why’d he do this interview? For the cover, that’s it. Omg, that’s the best answer, because it’s so true.
He has wanted that cover for a long time and was furious that Taylor Swift was on there before him. He even had a fake cover made years ago, framed it and put it on the wall!!!
Jon and Tim you guys have to make this buddy fest a weekly show at least. As an old Dem, I love this kumbaya meetup

One of the most salient takeaways from the interview, in my opinion, is that it shows Trump's decaying cognitive abilities. I think he goes back and forth because he doesn't know what he thinks, he can't think through the issues anymore, and he's stumbling around trying to say something that can't go wrong even when he is unsure about what's being discussed.
Yes, he was never interested in policy, only in the pomp and circumstance. So he can’t remember enough of the details of various policy questions to give coherent answers now.

Very informative and thoughtful discussion - this is what I miss most about politics, being able to talk to each other.. nothing is either/or, nothing is my way or the highway, and there are solutions to problems within reasonable, logical and clear eyed thinking, not all cold blooded and cruel and narrow minded and petty..
Very refreshing to hear a great discussion. Thank you. Unfortunately, you are not going to reach a large part of our population.
Important clarification for Lovett, Tylenol is an unscheduled, over the counter drug, like alcohol or tobacco. It's only Schedule III if it has codeine in it, which is schedule III.
As a longtime cannabis legalization activist who has worked for two legalization campaigns - Schedule III is not legalization, not even where I live in California.
Schedule III is only legal with a doctor's prescription, filled by a pharmacist at a pharmacy, which only lasts for 6 months. All state legal markets are written assuming cannabis is federally illegal, not legal in one specific context only. Many states, CA included, are written to amend if federal law changes, so it's an open question how this change will impact dispensaries.
There is a real chance the change to Schedule III will lead to a court case to shut down all existing cannabis businesses. No one really knows, which is why we ALL need to submit public comments when that comment period starts.
Schedule III also DOES NOT end people being jailed for cannabis.
They're fine with that, they love authoritarianism
