Nicely done. I would add, due to that proprietary sealant employed by Montblanc, a little heat - hairdrayer will do, whilst rotating the section collar in your hand, & that will soften the aforementioned sealant; then rotate your forcepts/purpose built tool in increments. You may need to apply gentle heat again. The key here is to TAKE YOUR TIME - never rush, & as Jet states, preferable to remove that pink sealant & supplant with standard silicone grease - ideal for any subsequent strip-downs & re-builds (& with that, your pen will never have to see the inside of a Montblanc workshop again). For those less adventurous, by all means, avail yourself of MB's service centre(s) ~ costs will depend on the level of maintenance required, & they're not inexpensive. Fantastic overview !!
Thanks Andrew for the nice tip! Agree to be patient especially when it comes down to these expensive pieces. Actually, i followed up with a video on this, as i found the silicon grease (I used TWSBI's) to be insufficient; and the pen still leaks (from the grip section area). Check out the video here in what managed to solve the issue for good: ruclips.net/video/3CiTklzyuIw/видео.html
Hey, I've just watched the second instalment - appears that you've nailed the issue - fantastic ! As with so many concerns that are pen-related, invariably there is a low cost solution. Great stuff, Very best, Andrew 🙂
Just to add a few tips from my personal experience. I use Gear Aid Silicone Grease (100% food-grade silicone grease) which can be bought for like $5 at your local Scuba shop. I tape my barrel not to scratch the finish before removing the piston assembly of my Montblanc 146 with an amazing tool from Amazon for $20. erofa Majohn P136 Fountain Pen Brass Metal Special Wrench Disassembly Tool. It is very easy. Good luck and be patient when working on your writing instruments!
This model is the best, in my opinion ... 146, 136 as well. Correct size. I have some of then, some of the first models with celuloid body and two stages filler, flat hard rubber feed, some transitional, with two stages filling but rounded feed, but also hard rubber, and the 70's models, with black plastic mechanism, hard rubber filler and great ink flow.
Hello, as far as I can tell there is no missing washer, the gold ring is there, the one the covers the side of the holes to remove the assembly, with gentle pressure, that can be pulled down. Most of the time it is stuck and since it might get lost anyway, people don't bother to take it off. By the way, that gold ring/washer goes back only in one direction, the wider side is to the barrel.
Great video. You've done a wonderful job especially on reassembly. Have you ever heard of snap ring pliers? $4.00 Harbor Freight and they have a nice video of how to use them. Thank you for this video.
Thanks Don! Never heard, but when googled, I do come across them before! But I think you really need "narrow ends" to fit the pliers into the slots of the assembly. Thanks for suggestions though! :)
In the UK/Ireland (where I am from), we know these as 'Circlip pliers' - they're an engineering tool - I've used them many times on cars that I've owned; good call !
As it has the serial number, and is "WEST GERMANY" stamped, I think it should be in around the year of 1990. Pens prior to that year don't have serial numbers yet. (I may be wrong about this). Thank you for watching! :)
You haven’t ever taken apart a ballpoint with twist mech by any chance? Mine broke when replacing the cartridge. The black plastic that turns the piece of yellow plastic has snapped and it won’t twist to retract any more. I also can’t get the old cartridge out. I’d like to repair it myself rather than taking it to a retailer (there isn’t one anywhere nearby). I was surprised at the plastic tbh, for the price I would have expected all metal.
Sorry to hear that Clare. I’m not familiar with that twist mechanism. If the thing is broken on the “inside” it can be harder to fix. Have to really see it to know if it can be repaired by yourself.
@@pen_journal after watching your video I investigated again (it happened about 5 or 6 years ago and has been sitting sadly in its box ever since) and I managed to loosen the undoable areas (couldn’t do it before). I’m going to try (gently) disassembling and see if I can mend the black plastic pusher/cam thingy that snapped. I’ll take photos so if it works I can upload for anyone else with a similar misfortune. 🙏🏼🤞🏼🙏🏼
@@clarewillison9379 Thank you Clare for sharing... Sometimes, I look for "scrap alternatives"; objects that you come across that may help to replace the parts that are broken, sometimes off other pen parts... You never know.
I've never done that with my MB146 to be honest. Cause I don't want to accidentally damage the ebonite feed.. But you can watch SBrebrown's video here for more details. Be safe. ruclips.net/video/fJBIGZ2KAKM/видео.html
The plastic insert that clips onto the nib in the pen lid of my Meisterstuck has become detached, so comes out attached to the nib when you take off the lid. Any idea how to reattach it or get a new one? Thanks!
@GiantSnipe, I use PERMATEX Clear RTV Silicone Adhesive Sealant from Home Depot. Works great to reattach the round plastic colar ring of the nib section.
An example of a good piston assembly ready to disassemble is TWSBI... Easy to clean.. Actually, the Omas Ogiva has one of the best robust easy to disassemble system EVER... It comes down to engineering and aesthetics as well :)
Send your montblanc to montblanc service center for servicing. They will repair/refurbish your fine writing instrument and make it like new for reasonable price. Don’t try and MacGyver you fine writing instrument let a professional take care of this.
Thank you for your suggestion! :) Actually I did manage to fix the problem (not for everyone to try on their own definitely). But I did know someone who sent their MB in for repairs, it did cost him quite an amount and also sad to say they replace the ebonite feed with a plastic feed enough though there is no issue with the feed (pen was broken at the barrel)
@acesplowing, So many times I sent my Montblanc 149 Calligraphy Flex, Montblanc JP Morgan, Montblanc Hemingway, Montblanc Mark Twain to them just to have it back and not being able to refill, blocked feed because they put too much lube, tines adjusted when i told them not to touch the nib, etc. I would rather rely on myself. I can tune my own nib and now lube my own Montblanc pens.

Indeed, some of the vintage MB are real gems and write fantastically! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences! :)
Amazing. I just bought this one and like to know how it works. Great help 👍👍👍👍
Glad it helped. But do take note Diana the warranty will be voided when you do take the pen apart yourself.
@@pen_journal is there a warranty after 20 years?? 😄
@@DianaLatexlover Oh!!!🤣🤣🤣
Thinking if you put tape over the nib and the pen area, masking the high risk areas might work effectively to protect the pen from scratching?
Yes it could work. Thanks for the suggestions! :)

Sorry to see that happen, unfortunately I don't think I can advise you on that :(
Material for Montblanc 146 to clean and id ink
I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean Robert... Do you mean what do I use to clean the pen in between ink changes?

Great detailed video.
Does that mean one can buy a range of nib sizes and insert them?
I don't think that MB sell nibs separately unfortunately

That's why complicated filling mechanism is bad. With a converter, the disassembly is swift and painless, because there's nothing to disassemble.
