Yamaha just works. Their tom mounts are the best! I’m a proud owner of 3 sets. PHX, RCs , and Club customs, broken in at Memphis Drum shop by the great Steve Jordan..
Hopefully I will live long enough to get a full set. Have had a MC snare for many years. Magnificent. Seems like no matter what room or environment it’s in, it always sound great with very little effort required.
17:35 - I've got this kit in natural black with a 20" kick, there is soooo much you can do with it. Mine is the later early 2000's kit with the Nouveau lugs which are much tougher. Mine has 10", 13", 14", 16", 20" kick & 1960's 14x5.5 4157 Gretsch snare w/Evans HD Dry head (love these heads). I can get away with all styles including rock with a bit of deadening in the kick and a change to my 14 x 5 Acrolite. Always loved this kit, probably my favourite I've ever purchased. Great tones & responds to all sorts of different head combos.
Rick, I had one just like that that I bought in the 90s from Barry (Drummers' World), which I ended up selling... and have greatly regretted. Thanks sharing!
I have a mid 90s MC. It was ordered for a clinic, so it was sold at a B stock price to the store where I worked while in college. Unfortunately it had the ‘in between’ depth toms. I wish it had been the standards. But I still love them. And I’m still toying with heads to this day to compensate for the depth.
I love clear or coated Emperors with Ambassador resonant side. To my ears, the Emperors make them sound like shallower toms. I play mostly RnB, but it’s a very versatile combo; pure class … Congrats on owning some of the best drums ever made ;) I love mine.
1993 I bought a 7 piece new .. with turquoise finish … played in the army band … regret selling that kit … I guess we all have one that we should have held onto
I love those drums....Played them for a show that was backlined...My cymbals, of course...I don't know why they discontinued those.drums.............................Ralph Onofrio
I have the same kit and sizes in a satin amber finish. Beautiful sounding drums. Still need to find a matching snare though, preferably without the bad, discontinued lugs.
Hi Rick, great playing and beauty drums! Was wondering if you can you tell me if all the floor Tom leg brackets are square between the lugs? I’m putting some yess brackets on my maple custom hanging 16” and want to do it right. Cheers
Mr. Rick, I own a Yamaha Maple Custom kit, 20", 14" & 12". I have never been able to achieve the same rich tones that you have on your kit. Would it be possible for you to elaborate on how you achieve your tunings? For instances, overall pitch of each drum, pitch relationship of each head, top head higher in pitch or bottom head higher in pitch or do you tune to any certain interval, minor 3rd or major 4th? I have a tunebot, is there anyway that you would be so kind as to just give me the hertz reading on the top and bottom heads of the drums, Tom's and bass? I would be eternally grateful for any help at all. I believe you live in Nashville, Tennessee and that you offer lessons. I would be willing to pay for a class if you would help me learn to tune those drums. Thanks, Mark
So I see the beta on bass drum is center but angled. Offset? Why not straight on? It sounds better yes but why? Thx! Left my fiberskin on snare for years playing jazzgrass. Badly…
Hey Rick- do you know if the Weckl snare is constructed differently than a normal Yamaha Maple Custom snare (from the same time period) other than the double-strainers? Thnx
It's a combination of the room, the heads, the mics, the drums and most importantly how you hit the drums. If you play with a good touch and the drums are decent you can get a good sound anywhere and a great sound when the other factors are in good standing.
Visually, aesthetically, I prefer this YESS type of tom montage over the later, newest one which should be more advanced as technology progress, but nevertheless
Thanks Rick for such a great comprehensive and informative review of your superb kit. I came too late to Yamaha to have these drums but love maple kits and have recently got an AHM kit which is also fantastic! 🤘😎🥁🔥👍
Rick's playing is very easy to listen to. The opposite of many RUclips drum videos. I think his superb recording setup has a lot to do with this.
The fact that he’s really musical and knows his gear doesn’t hurt either.
Yeah .. the guys a beast. He's make a beginner kids kit sound good 😂@@RepJock88
beautiful drums. beautifuls cymbals. beautiful playing. Thanks very much for this video.
Beautiful kit .. Wonderful playing. Thanks for sharing Rick.
I have a '95 maple custom with with a 20" kick and you're right . Its a great all around kit. ❤my maple customs

Rewrapping a mix match tama kit and moved to all yamaha mounts and hardware (mostly) they nailed it. Most consistent and reliable BD, and SDs too
Great stuff. Love the misc set up. All you need - your playing and drums can deliver it all from there.
Wow that ride swing is something, automatic sub!!
Hopefully I will live long enough to get a full set. Have had a MC snare for many years. Magnificent. Seems like no matter what room or environment it’s in, it always sound great with very little effort required.
I love MIJ Yamaha. But I’m also a motorcyclist, so there’s that. Yamaha is just excellent.
Sound great!!!!!!!! Nice playing as well
Dear Rick.. It sounds amaizing.. & you make it sounding top

I've got a YMC set of 10-12-14-16" toms and a 20" bass drum in exactly the same finish. Bought in 1998. Fantastic hardware too.
love that dry ride
They sound awesome!

With the gold?
Unfortunately true.

Rick could you post a photo of your studio, great sound .

Absolutely fantastic playing and those drums are magnificent to hear. Give tune bot settings please
I tune them by ear....no tunebot.

Nice warm round sound. Not agressive.
Nothing like a good drum 🥁 set to inspire you to play your best!!!! Sounds awesome 👏🏾!!!!
Thnx
I believe it is the same shell construction.
Tips on getting this sound? Is it really the heads or is it just tuning high in general?
It's a combination of the room, the heads, the mics, the drums and most importantly how you hit the drums. If you play with a good touch and the drums are decent you can get a good sound anywhere and a great sound when the other factors are in good standing.
@@rickdior I’ll work on touch. I’ve always gravitated towards this tom sound, but I’ve never been able to achieve it tuning wise.
Sounds amazing. Only OH's?
The mics are in the description. 2 Overheads and a BD mic.
Thank you!@@rickdior
Man Rick! Great Drumming ! Love the Yamahas. Is that a Dave Weckyl Snare?
One of the snares is. If you watch the entire video, I talk about it and show it.
Thanks
Is this the legendary studio drum set? Or maybe the absolute birch?
This was the first version of the Maple Custom. They later had a hybrid version as well as the Absolutes.
Visually, aesthetically, I prefer this YESS type of tom montage over the later, newest one which should be more advanced as technology progress, but nevertheless
Yamaha Maple Customs were awesome. I just never liked that gold on the lugs. Doesn't hold up over time.
If you keep on it and not allow it to oxidize it will hold up.
@@rickdior I second this. I've had my YMC kit for 29 years- no prob w/the lugs
Thanks Rick for such a great comprehensive and informative review of your superb kit.
