I wondered how to make that whistle for awhile but haven’t started my west coast beat project yet. Thanks for showing us. 90’s west coast beats are my fav of all time.
This sounds good man, you got the vibe right! I’m a Texan and we grew up jamming that west coast rap. You should do a tutorial on Southern rap beats. We call them Country Rap Tunes. I ain’t talking about trap beats either. I mean the real southern sound by producers like Pimp C, N.O. Joe, Mike Dean, John Bido, Organized Noize, T-Mix, Mannie Fresh, Beats By The Pound.
As opposed to other producers who spend the first 7 minutes of their video showing off how great their song is. Navie will show us how to make the song in the intro, rather than just show it off. This rather humble approach is what initially attracted me to his videos and it sets him apart IMO.
Oh I gotta comment before watching. This is gonna be dope! Edit: oh, man, that whistle tip is gonna come in handy. I'm off of work tonight and had planned on getting in the kitchen and cooking! Now I'm inspired! Thanks, Navieeeeee!
@@NavieD Thanks. I'll probably find something in Flex, Sytrus, or go obscure and bust out some 3xosc! lol You definitely stand out from the rest of these YT producers! Cheers.
This man is giving away knowledge at such an incredible rate, I feel we're almost unworthy of it 🤣 Anyhow, greetings from Brazil! Keep up the good work 👍🏻
I'll add that also some more natural clap samples work really well. Organs can be really fitting too! Also, *Monark* is my go-to synth for that West Coast analog synth sound
You also should have said that you have to throw notes off the grid (mostly a Bit to late) and let them land on weak beats! I think this plays a big role and adds a lot to the groove and you did it too :P
@@NavieD are you trying to play me? xD I mean almost your whole baseline lands on weak beats or is thrown of the grid how could you not consider this. Or am I the stupid here and be overthinking this stuff
What you're describing I think is not just landing late but syncopation (specifically landing on weak beat often like you said). I'm not super well versed in it but I think that's what it is. And I was also thinking the same thIng- that syncopation is like a big staple of funk, and descendants like G funk- so definitely would've been worth it to cover that.
Man very good video I think you should expan on this like how dre uses more samples,Dj quik has more grittyness and uses a lot of synths and Warren G's use of keys and organs.
love the old type west coast stuff 😍 do you have any more helpful tips e.g. for chord progressions or how do you build that simple chord progression ? and some more vst like purity . etc. ?
I see a pretty radical approach in mixing that can look easy but it’s really not and if not done properly can damage sounds instead of compliment them. Of course the way you do it sounds great. But me been a beginner I prefer be a bit more cautious with filters and maybe lightly multiband sidechain between sounds and a bit of pan but yeah my result Is more boomy and and details are less clear. Ok next time I try your approach
Excuse me navie d i have a question related to chords and melodies Question: bro i can't make dark melodies i don't know why whenever i try to make dark melodies i always make something emotional happy or moddy not dark can you suggest me something or make a video on it i tried a lot of scales and watched a lot of videos but can't get good results please reply 😶😶😶
Mann someones beats thats really grabbing my ear and hopefully you can give a tutorial is Cardo. Specifically his stuff with Larry June on “Cruise USA” or “Mr. Midnight” if you listen to these they are just very different g funkish beats.
Also i have a question. 3 months ago you made a video (( can i sample better than jpegmafia)) and you used a whistle sound on that beat my question is how i can make something like that in synth this whistle you made on omnisphere is cool but it doesn't sound like that one i am talking about
"Swing" IS key with the drums, esp the Hats and or layered snares Westcoast and Eastcoast 90s Beats. Easiest way I do this in FL: click on Instrument tab (hiHat/snare/clap etc) then click wrench tab, underneath 'time' you'll see "swing" knob, I usually adjust between 3-5 for taste but it all comes down to individuals preference 😁✌🏽
My favorite west coast beat is either Warren G - Gangsta Love or Kurupt - We Can Freak It
What's yours?
I gotta go with a Warren G song as well but of course featuring my man Nate Dogg, RIP. Regulate is still in my regular rotation.

What about quantizing, is it best to not quantize to keep that human feeling?
Naive does tetris with the frequencies

I was always wondering how they did that whistle. I thought you need a pipe for that.
Hahah like a plumbers pipe?
Usually any Lead can get you that sound or similar. But tweaking the frequency will result in different tones and color.

I noticed on the West Coast Whistle you did not have the notes quantized perfectly. Was that on purpose or did you go in and do it after the video?
I tend to unquantize certain instruments, and quantize others. Check out my video on J Dilla where I explain why
