  • If you have ever wanted to have a go at writing a romance novel, or even a short story but don't know where to start, look no further, here's a super simple way to begin mind-mapping your story out. This mini-workshop video is full of prompts that when followed, by the end you will have created your world, your characters and your main plot moments. So, let's get stuck in!
Ten tips for writing your romance novel:
    Step 1: Develop your world-building.
In order to create a rich and immersive fantasy world, it's important to develop a comprehensive understanding of the setting in which your characters live. Consider the geography, history, politics, religions, cultures, and magic systems that exist in your world.
    Step 2: Create your characters.
Your characters are the heart of your story, so take the time to develop them fully. Consider their backgrounds, motivations, strengths, weaknesses, and flaws. It's important to create a diverse cast of characters with unique personalities and perspectives to keep your readers engaged.
Step 3: Determine your central romance.
Decide who your main romantic couple will be and what their dynamic will be like. Will they be enemies turned lovers, or childhood friends who fall in love? Will their romance be a slow burn or a whirlwind affair?
Step 4: Flesh out your secondary characters.
Your secondary characters should have their own personalities, motivations, and story-lines that intersect with the main romance. Make sure they have their own arcs and contribute to the overall narrative.
    Step 5: Develop your plot.
Decide on the major events that will drive your story forward. Consider what obstacles your characters will face and how they will overcome them. Make sure your plot is engaging and full of conflict.
    Step 6: Outline your story.
Create an outline of your story, including all major events and character arcs. This will help you stay organised and ensure that your story flows smoothly.
Step 7: Write your first draft.
With your outline in hand, start writing your first draft. Don't worry too much about perfection at this stage, just focus on getting your ideas down on paper.
    Step 8: Revise and edit.
Once you have a complete first draft, it's time to revise and edit. Look for inconsistencies, plot holes, and areas where the story could be improved.
Step 9: Polish your manuscript. This involves checking for errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation, as well as formatting your work properly. Consider getting feedback from beta readers, a writing group or if you can afford it, a professional editor.
Step 10: Publish your book and promote it.
Consider self-publishing or traditional publishing options, and create a marketing plan to get your work in front of readers. Use social media, author events, and other tactics to build your brand and grow your audience.

As a discovery writer myself, I wanna quickly add that you don't have to do this all up front. You can fill in the flaws and what not as you go. Enjoy the process, don't sweat it too hard

I had already started a draft, but this really helped me with ideas I had on the back burner and places that gave me pause as I was writing. I did steps 1 through 6 while watching the video and it was great. My character's name is Ava and boy is she complicated! Thank you so much! 💜

I am so excited that I found your little workshop. It really helped me open up to a story. My character Lizzy is a middle-aged divorcee who does a quicky job for her best friend who is a dominatrix and turns up sick one night and needs a stand in for her client. Lizzy had done some work in this area when she was going through college in her 20's but has since become a divorced wife, mother and now new grandmother. I'm so excited to explore this character. I feel that it is a wonderful opportunity to explore the ideas of how we view sex work versus therapy. I can't thank you enough.
