I was fortunate enough to be at LIV Greenbrier this weekend, got Bryson and Phil’s autographs, and got to witness Bryson shoot 58. I will say that I had an overall more enjoyable experience at LIV than any PGA event I’ve been too. I love watching incredible golf and the overall energy is just so great. I did think the whole time though that if you are strictly there to watch as much golf as you possibly can, go to a PGA tournament but I personally would rather go to LIV. Bryson had a tough year last year with losing his Father. A lot was said about him losing his form after taking the LIV money, but i'm sure they didn't know what his family was going through and it was bound to have an effect on his season. He's BAAAACK now, lighting it up with that KRANK driver and hitting bombs!! That 2 V 2 with Phil Mickelson was great and I'm looking forward to more of those videos. The LIV golf style of play definitely has it's place in today's golf world, it might bring more young people to the game and isn't that what the sport needs to grow? The team concept of LIV is very much part of the US pro tour scene. All of the universities have golf TEAMS that compete as teams and encourage the esprit de corps inherent in such a competition. Also an interesting aspect is that a golfer that is "out of it" for the individual can still help his team place and even win. Everyone contributes. Team golf, Ryder and President's cups are all of the same ilk, they bring highly individual competitors together. Win, win.

  • @bluetoughguy

I watched a Bryson video on his YT channel yesterday where he played a 2v2 with one of his teammates against Phil Mickelson and one of Phil's teammates. While I know we aren't big on the team thing, it feels like they have leaned into it quite a bit. You could see the comradere the were starting to build and how they were cheering each other on. In a sport that is so dominated by the 1v1 nature of it, it's kinda cool to see this style that's much more Rider cup-esque.

Got to say that watching Bryson make a 58 was incredible and something you won’t see again for a long time. The team aspect is actually really good, I know you both don’t get it, but then say you look forward to the Ryder cup which is a team event, so you have to look at the teams individually and see the competition as a team and not just as an individual performance. At least with LIV, everyone can watch it for free and not have to pay a monthly price to watch PGA tour comps from all the big sports broadcasters. LIV are clearly doing more to try and get more people into golf including giving people that chance to watch it.

I was a LIV hater for the longest time but ever since PGA accepted their money i think of them as the same. This was the second LIV tournament I have watched and for me it's significantly better than the PGA format. LIV has a more party atmosphere, and they lean into it when each player has their walk on music. I was also against to the shotgun approach at first but what I do like about it is that it's not as much of a time commitment and I can watch all the players at the same time rather than having to watch the first tee off and it take forever to get the tournament started. not sure I can speak to the team aspect but to me it feels like they are two separate competitions, the individual vs the team. I think LIV also does a better job of showing the players talk through a put and the live putt tracer is pretty cool.

Always been a huge fan of Bryson and this weekend has shown that when he is on it, he is the man to beat on any tour. His driving was of course great, but his putting was just phenomenal as was his short game. It feels that LIV is truly gaining some traction and this weekend has only afded fuel to the fire.
As a later edit, the team aspect is definitely enjoyed by those who are much more in to LIV as a product. It's a well supported aspect. Also, we still all enjoy the game of golf, no one wants to see the sport and traditions decimated, just improved 👍

I was playing on my own that day and got paired up with him and another young guy at the turn who were competing in some type of loose tournament format and playing head to head. Nice kids, they could hit the ball a ton. I asked the assistant pro kid this same question that you were pondering in here and I think it's a great question and one that's always stupefied me: What keeps these guys SO motivated to grind all the time -- how do they stay focused or even interested in the game? He admitted that he's lost his way before and stopped liking it and that ebbs and flows. I think these guys or anyone on the grind with serious aspirations must have an inordinate amount of OCD or borderline madness in their mental makeup. Same for anyone who excels far and beyond the average person in any pursuit, especially these days when the population is larger than ever and we're more global than ever. Rick and Guy don't 'get' the team element of LIV cos they don't watch the broadcast for any amount of time. If you watch the whole thing you will 'get' the tension when the team comp is close and how it can change really quickly - regardless of whether you support a particular team or not. I really like LIV and in particular the commentary which is much more dynamic and fun and of course the fact that there isn't an ad break every five minutes is a huge plus. I find the PGA coverage tired and a bit boring if im honest.

As I understand it Ping contacted Bryson and invited him down for a custom set of irons with all the tinkering he wanted to do. He came out with a one-length set made to his specs within a few days. Krank make the Formula Fire LD (long drive) version that Bryson uses and another USGA-conforming driver. They also have 2 high COR drivers for slower swing speeds that do not conform. As of this writing they are discounting the Fire drivers and fairways $150 which gets the drivers down to $399. They’ll also sell you just the head if you like for $429 regular price. Not sure if they’re discounting just the head.
I have a pre-owned Krank Element (later branded as Formula 5) that I picked up cheap. Of my 5 drivers (others are PXG, Honma, Yamaha, Miura) it’s the most forgiving (and the loudest) and everyone who’s tried it so far is surprised at the forgiveness.

Most players know they're not the best or their chances of winning the title are very low, but they just love competing. How many athletes play well past their prime? Almost all of them. The two reasons I've heard from athletes on why they stopped is either their body can't do it any more or their lost their drive to compete. It's almost never about not being the best.

If Guy hasn't attended a LIV event then that would partly explain his lack of understanding of the teams concept in LIV. I acknowledge it may not come through on TV as well as in person.
We attended all 3 days of LIV Adelaide and the teams concept was strong. It was obvious to the course audience that the players were highly motivated by the teams event all the way through to the last putt on the last day. Whereas at a traditional golf event (4days of stroke, individual) the crowd interest on the 4th day is almost entirely on the last 2 groups and cursory interest in a few higher profile golfers. At the LIV events, there are players in groups across the entire course whose score on each hole is actively feeding into the Teams event scoring and the crowd are following the changes on big screens on every hole.
As for the Lee Westwood mention, he shot +20 at Bedminster so I hope he can find his groove soon as the golf world would be thrilled to see him really compete again.

They filmed a 2V2 with Bryson and Anairban Lahiri vs Phil and Cameron Tringale and the amount of thought they were putting into their approach shots to get it to the right portion of the greens showed it wasn't just some course you could just pop it to the middle of the green and guarantee par every time. The shotgun start is something to get used to, and when I did get used to it, I like that all the players starting the same time and finishing the same time, they all still play the same course for me in the same weather conditions, and all players still play 18 holes, just in different orders.

@@IamKnowbodie As far as the ad content....The Saudis don't invest for fun. They are in it to make money. I question how long the no ad format can continue. Remember, this format is in its infancy. At some point the bill will come due!

@@SwimCoach8 one reasonable comment in a SEA of ignorance.
This peeps thinking the Saudis invested several billion dollars without second thoughts about getting it back are DELUSIONAL, they are gathering sympathy and building an audience and then they'll pounce at your wallet way harder than the pga tour ever did, a dealer giving you free drugs isn't your friend he knows you'll eventually pay it back with interest .
An investment Arab group will just keep putting FOUR MILLION $ tournaments for free after spending a billion dollars in player contracts guys, they're THAT nice 😂😂

Would love to get an episode discussing what you should prioritise spending on as a new beginner with different budgets. I.e. with a £1000 or £2000 etc. How much you would spend on clubs, rounds, lessons, driving range etc.

Q? What does it take for golf lovers to say LIV are great players and the golf is out of this world. Do they have to win a major? Do they have to be inducted into the hall of fame? do they have to compete against some of the best golfers in the world every time they play? do they have to hit a 58? The answer of course to all of those questions is LIV has been doing all of this from day one and yet you two guys just can't seem to get your head around the LIV concept. Is it golf or isn't it golf? Is it competitive or isn't it competitive? Seems pretty clear to me and many others.

The play was great by Bryson, but I think it's a testament to the way LIV has been setting up their golf courses too. The guys utterly destroyed the Greenbrier, as it was just a birdie fest of them throwing darts, at pin after pin. Fantastic play indeed! But Bryson almost had 2 rounds in the 50's with a 61 in his 2nd round also. They need to set the courses up a bit tougher, otherwise this will happen again sooner than we think.
