    Thanks for the video Kip
    Was interesting.
    Busy time for you feeding out of the ag bag and silo. You got it fixed so it works better and faster for you. Good work Kip.
    You and Lonnie are good at fixing those resting stalls and the metal rods that separate them. Good work. You bought a bunch of stall rods at an auction I believe. Those sure come in handy.
    Hang in there. Thanks for everything Kip.

    We used to have a bunk for haylage and corn silage. Put the corn silage on top. Then we switched to ag bags and in 2017 went to 2 20x80 silos with patz 98c unloaders. We put the shutes 12 feet apart and drive a tmr mixer between them. Would never go back.

    All my feed comes out of ag bags.. we aim for 2 first cut, and 1 second cut hayledge bags.. and then bale and wrap all the other hay.. and then 7 bags of corn. It all goes into the tmr which then conveyed into the feed cart.. since we are still tiestall.. but have a new barn build in the near future.

    Back when we or my parents still had the auger going down the center of the bunk for the milk cows, yes the waterer was on the end of the bunk. We had 2 silos, one for silage and the other for haylage and maybe oatlage (chopped oats) depending on how the oats was July 1st. Morning was from one silo only plus ground feed, afternoon or evening was from the other silo and ground feed. Then there was free choice alfalfa in the bale feeder in the barn.
    Tore one silo down, bought a mixer wagon, charged the poured bunks out to concrete H bunks, took the feed room out and used a grain tank along with making a new door/opening in the one wall to be able to drive through the barn with the tractor and mixer wagon.
    Yes, we have used the ag/silage bags, but went away from them due to the cost, rodent problems making holes in them and trying to take care of the plastic.
    Poured a silage pad without sidewalls before silage 2022. While my uncle was recovering from a knee replacement. The studies he saw, said that on average you would save about 15% compared to bareground, this was after we poured the pad. The reason for us not having/using the walls is that when using the blade on the packing tractor is that the blade was 2 feet wider than the tires on the tractor, so you couldn't get the sides packed decent until after you were above the wall. Then once you get above the wall to pack, it doesn't leave a good feeling when the less packed sucks you over being that high up.
    I also remember that one silo was enough silage for us, and my grandpa happened to have a spout to put on the blower to blow it on a pile when using the front unload boxes. This was back when only a handful of people had a frontwheel assist loader tractor. Im sure most people know what it's like to try to push with a 2wd tractor compared to a fwa or even a 4wd with a blade.
    If you guys are thinking about retiring the upright silos and going to bunkers. Me personally, I'd recommend atleast 3 with walls for your operation, 4 might be better. The reason why im saying 4, is if you plan on chopping like first and 3rd cutting, it might be best to keep them separate because on a pile i dont think you would be happy with the seam line where they would meet. Then if doing walls I'd recommend a 20 to 30 foot apron in front for spillage from either unloading the boxes or if there was an oops while filling the feeder wagon, easier to scrape up and have cleaner feed.

    Filling an AG bag looks very professionell with all the tools involved, but emptying it, looks somehow improvised (counts for all). So when will someone find a smoother way to bring the feed from the bag to the cows?

      @@KipSieglerFarming1 no mixer. Poor man's tmr, turn on the conveyors and the silos at the same time to mix in the bunk or depending just 2 rations in morning and the 2 different in evening. I also fill 2-3 feeder wagons every other day the same way! All the hay I feed is dry round bales, the corn I grind half shelled and half ear corn, I have 4 corn cribs that get filled, use to put it in the one silo but needed it for silage so started doing more ear corn!

    My thoughts would be from working on many different dairy farms, the feed quality from an upright silo is more consistent then from a bunk, bags can be good but can be problematic with spoiling. I never minded working in uprights, but they can be more dangerous than a bunk, and definitely more physically demanding. Fed with a TMR and exactly as you do letting it mix as it goes along The bunk, I prefer your way, I don’t feel there in much difference in production between the two.
    Congratulations on your subscriptions, your content is excellent.

    Are you ever going to add on more silos for more storage space for silage for feed I do believe that there is a version that can be used on their side versus upright silos.
    From what I've seen of the silage bags rodents are a major issue unless they are made out of concrete or cement which slows down the opportunity for rodent's penetration of the crop for feed for the animals.
    I see that your farm loves the bags more! The only advantage I see of the bags when in use you lose the space and when done you gain that space back. Wouldn't it be best to have concrete or cement silos whether they lay on their side or upright would be better to prevent rodents from getting into the crop's storage?
    Does the farm have a rodent trapping program in place, to protect the farm's bottom line, and how much does the farm spend; on rodent control?
    Sincerely!
    R.S.V.,

    Tell me something how come you don’t save the silos and feed out of them only when a training stuff when you’re getting low and use the bag when it’s nice weather that way you don’t have to go out and load free when it’s raining out😊

    Hey Kip thanks for sharing this with us. Quick question…I see on other channels with mixed rations they are weighing the portions of each batch. That said with your feeding method, how do you know you’re giving the cows enough/ too much? I realize seeing the leftover amounts is part. Not questioning you or your process…just curious. Thanks again!!

  • @markrisebrough8776
    @markrisebrough8776 2 месяца назад

    Nothing wrong with a bunk delivery system. The issue for you has become the amount of labor involved in feeding. Your silos have served well but have become high maintenance and small (by today's standards). Ideally you would want to keep storing vertically in new bigger silos that can deliver to a TMR mixer that can deliver the final product to the bunk feeder system.

    • @markrisebrough8776
      @markrisebrough8776 2 месяца назад

      And once you're into TMR feeding you can get your feed sources tested to determine your best mix to get max production from your milk cows and then get your cows milk analyzed to see which of them need to be culled.
