    I love ft wilderness. you can really stay there and not go to the parks and still have a great time. that guard is a smartass. "then you're not checked in". condescending attitude like how does that help the situation especially if you already checked in. we had a similar encounter at port orleans and my wife mentioned it to a cast member higher up just to let them know. we weren't even expecting anything, but they gave us free tickets to one of the after hours event....as much as people pay for a site at fort wilderness and at times difficult to book, I would report that guard just to let them know. he is the first person people encounter entering ft wilderness. that wouldn't be a great start to my day.

    Actually the day you were trying to check in, I was directly behind you at the gate. Like you, I had pre registered online, and also like you my bracelet would not open the gate. The grumpy fellow at the gate, treated me the same way as he had you and your wife. It also put a bad taste in my mouth making my first Disney encounter for this visit a negative one. It grinds me a little when their fees are so high, 205 on a couple of the nights with tax a night and the first guy to greet you is a grump. Do the math ...with 700 camp spots times 200 roughly, you would expect a little more pleasant “meet and greet”. We live near Ft Wilderness and have raised our children and grandchildren at the Ft. It is consistently expensive, but it is always clean, safe, and like an old friend, you pretty much know what to expect in the quality department. You have done a great job Robert covering the Mouse. Keep up the good work and hopefully we will cross paths soon on the RV trail. Be safe. Oh, by the way, Living in Florida mostly since 72, you really can’t avoid our pesky little critters (bugs). Oh by the way, nice camera work.Thanks. Dan

      Coming from a travel agent in the pass. You have to report the grump, the garbage cans and the bug. . You have to let them know it's not ok. I don't care how much you pay. Rude is not acceptable. Other than that it was nice to see all of the properties. It has been a while since I was there last (1992). Love your coverage. Thank you so much. Shelley

      @@jonnieinbangkok I clean toilets at a premiere botanical garden and estate. I always greet customers with a friendly smile and answer their questions with hospitality and graciousness. Without happy patrons, they spread the word, and places shut down. Means no job to be grumpy about. If he's unhappy, he needs to get out of the hospitality industry and go guard a warehouse. Hospitality, tourism, retail, food service, is all customer service based. You have to put your best foot forward and be accommodating to the client. That's all part of the job requirement.

    I don't think you were too harsh at all. For the price, your campsite was far below par, with a dumpster that no doubt gives off "eau de garbage" perfuming your picnic table area, and having a front row view of all the traffic. And the guard wasn't the kind of person you expect to greet you at Disney. They charge a lot for everything there, and so you would expect the service and employees to be exceptional.

    Sounds like a very honest opinion. I stayed there for 2 weeks in 2016 with my 2 dogs, 2 kids and wife and had a great time. We enjoyed everything Fort Wilderness had to offer. Yes... I agree Robert , ... Fort Wilderness is NOT the "same" Disney experience !!!
    When I was there, I thought at first it was just me, but other have told me of the same "less than DISNEY" experience as well ...... It's too bad ... (especially at $200 a night ...)

  • @papertheweb
    @papertheweb 5 лет назад +10

    We have spent many, many weeks at Fort Wilderness and always loved our our time there. From the time our kids were young all the way to taking our grandchildren before they were teenagers... they are in college now. I'm so sorry you had a bad experience. I agree I would not have loved paying $200 for the site you were given. I think if you had asked to be moved they would have done it. I always found the people working in the campground friendly. So my experience was not yours. The kids loved us renting a golf card and whipping around the grounds. When we first started going it was permitted to pool hop from one resort to the other. Now... that is not possible.
    We retired to Cape Canaveral two years ago and haven't been to the Disney Parks once. Just the thought of the crowds and having to worry about reserving time for rides takes away any desire to go. I like the idea of the Florida resident weekday pass but even that is very expensive.
    I enjoyed your hotel tour, thank you for doing it. We also have had a great time visiting the disney hotels, boardwalk and just enjoying walking around the grounds. We do enjoy returning to Fort Wilderness, visiting the trading post and reliving all those wonderful magical time with the kids and grandkids. When we did it it was nice to have our own "home" with us to come back to whenever we got park weary. Saved a bunch on meals! Thanks again Robert!

    The site that you get at Fort Wilderness can be hit or miss, much like the specific room at one of their hotels. Of course, the “miss” spots shouldn’t be considered “Premium” and should cost less. I think they consider Premium to be more of location within the campground and the “amenities” not the features of the specific site. But your site costing $200 is outrageous.

    • @johnp139
      @johnp139 5 лет назад +3

      Yeah, I’m looking at your site (1434) right now (I’m in early for a conference at Gaylord Palms), and it is probably one of the lamest in the loop as far as privacy is concerned. But as far as the trash/recycling bins being right there, they have one of those about every 5 sites, so not too many people dumping there.
      The loop that you were in is also close to both the boat launches an the pool/campfire area, probably making it a premium area. And you were there on a weekend, which probably bumped the price up even more.
      Not meaning to ridicule or anything, just pointing out some more information.
      WOW, it’s humid out here!
      Now to post a sign saying “Robert slept here” 😀

    Beautiful travelogue. I read that one of the things that Disney insisted on when they were building this place in swampland was mosquito control. The buildings are designed in such a way to eliminate standing water since mosquito larvae grow there. Also they use some kind of natural repellent with garlic to repel mosquitoes as well. I see that all those safeguards didn't keep Mr. Cockroach from checking into the Grand Floridian. He was probably OK if he had a reservation and Micky armband.

    When we went I gotten a text and an email at 11am well ahead of the normal check in time stating that my site was ready. The guard waived us thru and we drove straight to our sight. We are in a 42’ class A and had no problems with check-in. We also had trash and recycling bins at our site that were emptied every morning. We had zero issues the two times we went. The App needs to be more simple to navigate and yes I wish it were less expensive but overall we had a good time. We paid $145/night for our premium site the end of July this year and we stayed in the 1300 loop.
    Regardless of the guards “grumpiness” I wouldn’t let that forecast my stay there.

Rudeness is unacceptable anywhere in the hosptality business. I stayed in the economy accomodations at Disney with my son, more than several years ago. Nothing special to retire to in the evening .... but included fresh towels and pleasant personnel. Also included 3 meals in our choice of venues and entrance into several major parks & the water parks ..... MORE than enough to do during our 4 day stay .... affordable as well through the AAA. Appreciate your update (as only you can do, excellent!). Would love to go back.

    Cranky old men should work in positions that do not required customer interaction or interaction with fellow employees for that matter. Plus, cranky old men should look for jobs they will enjoy and therefore be happy. On the other hand if you can't enjoy working for Disney you should probably just retire. I would enjoy working somewhere where you can see the looks of pure joy and excitement on kids (and adults) faces all day! What a blessed day it would be.

    Another great video, the signage needs to be better at the entrance; that happens all the time there. It's a nice campground, but it's really spread out and they've gotten real aggressive on their pricing. The non premium full hookups are actually more spread out but it can be a long walk to the bus stop and comfort stations from the distant sites.

    We stayed at Fort Wilderness Campground two weeks ago, we also had an upgraded site and I felt the same way about the campground. We also checked in online and still had to stop to talk to someone at the main gate there, but we got a nice lady vs the grumpy security guard. As you were I was also pretty disappointed with the site, it was very small they were stacked on top of each other with no privacy, there was hardly enough room for our Travel Trailer and parking for the tow vehicle. Other sites around us had vehicles parked everywhere where they shouldn't have been parked, for example on the grass at the shower house on the sides of the loop roads making it difficult to drive through the loop and it didn't seem that anyone from the resort cared because there were vehicles parked all over like this our entire stay. The transportation system is needlessly confusing there and it took us about 2-3 days before we really had it figured out, it was a frustrating experience to say the least. There really was no parking at any of the stores, pools etc on the property so you either had to walk, ride your bike, wait for transportation or have a golf cart to get there.
    We were there with our kids so we really didn't spend much time at the campground. The campground is not a place I would stay for a "relaxing" vacation spot and will not be back unless we are going to the parks again. So in other words the campground itself imo is not a destination without the parks being included in the destination.

    One week ago, we were at Fort Wilderness for a dinner reservation (Hoop Dee Doo). The cast member at the gate had us pull aside and demanded to see our reservation. I wasn't prepared as no other resort gate had demanded it. Needless to say, we held up the line and were left with less than warm fuzzies with the whole situation. All other resorts had only needed to see my driver's license. I wonder if it's mostly security that's the issue.

    HI Robert !! A really top notch video... nice to see so many hotels up close and personal. We have been to Disney World 5 or 6 times in the past 20 years and we always leave with mixed feelings. Sometimes there are just to many people and too many lines - to me not worth it. Now retired I would prefer peace and tranquility. We went to Fort Wilderness (during our stay at the Polynesian (loved that hotel !!!) just to rent bikes and drive around. It was very nice, everyone had their RV's decorated for Halloween, and it was a lot of fun to see them all. You put so much effort and time into these videos and it shows. Thanks for sharing - as always !! Nice to see you and your lovely lady again - even for a brief shot - ;-) Keep it up - Be safe and always healthy !!!

    Too harsh on ft wilderness. Yes the campsites are close together and it’s expensive, but Robert paid for a top tier site. Believe it or not the normal sites are usually more spacious, and they are usually around $100 vs $200.
    Not to mention, being and older couple I don’t think ft wilderness is really geared towards people Roberts/his wife’s age.

      When it comes to staying here, like other places, do your research. You don't need to pay $200 a night here. Not to mention there are discounts available all the time and there is a site that shows you details of all the sites including how easy it is to back in and how spacious they are. I can't list it here because Google keeps deleting it.

    Your comments were fair. We stayed years ago and had a great time, but $200 is crazy for a campsite. Now we have also stayed (years ago 1996 and 2006) at Old Key West and Port Orleans and both were fantastic. Our last trip in 2019 was the worst. We went to Hollywood Studios. The rides were dated, the crowds were crazy, expensive and they closed the place at 8 pm. Never going back. We really enjoy your videos and perspective.

    I just found your video on Ft. Wilderness and I must say we LOVE it here. Sites are hit or miss and last time we went got a corner site much like yours with the garbage cans right there but there so much greenery between that we didn't even noticed it. There are so many positives about this campground one of them being that you can have up to 10ppl in one site so when you divide the price (it changes on the season) for how many ppl are staying with you I feel it's totally worth it. We love the boat ride to Magic Kingdom, movie night and smores by the fire with the kids, not to mention the horse and pony rides, trails, fire works by the Marina make this campground a magical experience. I do hope you give Fort Wilderness a second chance and maybe stay in the preferred loops (site 113) close to the Marina, it's our favorite. Save travels Robert!

    Great Video, Love the traveling. As far as the guard, yeah he was a bit rude, he could have very easily defused the situation by saying something like, I'm sorry for your deley, let me see if I can help, what is your name? then just proceed to do the check in. His reply was not stern, it was confrontational and sarcastic, something I expect in NYC or Chicago, not at Disney. When dealing with the public, you can think anything you want, you just can't always say it. We've been to Fort Wilderness Campground many times, over the decades, only had one time we had a site like yours, and yes we didn't like it either, but all of the other times were always nice. Go back, try it again, maybe it was just bad timing, everyone of us can have a bad day or bad trip. If it happens again, say something to management. Keep up the great travel videos, I look forward to seeing them.

    Another informative video. You talk about the "Disney" experience, and I would agree that you didn't have that with much of your campsite experience - which makes this video very informative. Based on what you read about Disney Check-in, all you needed to do was to present your wrist band at the gate and head to your campsite - still haven't a clue as to what value the smartass guard added. As for Sanaa - one of our favorites. We don't stay on property - we consider condos as our RV. Thanks!

    We were excited to see your FWC vlog after watching the Livestream in April, but think you were too harsh. Everyone needs to go through Registration even if you check in on the app to pickup your vehicle pass, maps, etc. and you can request another campsite if you don’t like the one assigned. FW Sites is an excellent app to preview campsites. Security guards are usually very friendly. Saying the campground may be removed is going too far because of a few bad apples and bear-proof garbage cans. If you try FWC again, maybe go during the holidays when everyone decorates their campsites and golf carts for parades. Fly on Pelican!

    Robert, I don’t think you were harsh at all. I agree with everything you just said. Even for the price for the stay is pretty outrageous. It should be half the price because of no “hotel” service at the campsite that should be fair and reasonable.😜 . Other than that, I enjoyed your experience through the Disney hotels hopping. Beautiful hotels and outdoor space. I would definitely check it out. Thanks for sharing your experience! See you on the road next time. Robert: Your initial interaction at Disney's Fort Wilderness (FW) was inexcusable and horrifying. My family has been frequenting the FW cabins since 1979. Once we took up camping (RVing), FW has been our "go-to" spot. Little beats their amenities and entertainment options for children and families. In our more than 19 trips to FW in the last 5 years, Disney has sometimes missed the mark on their legendary service and customer experience. In those times, we have found that the staff (cast members) are more than willing to correct, and improve, the situation. It's unfortunate that the issues arise in the first place, but once they are made aware, they do accommodate (including moving campsites, fixing under-performing golf carts, or just adjusting the attitude of a misplaced security guard).
    I hope that you give FW another chance, and perhaps even explore other opportunities that the facility has to offer. Even with the amount of time we've spent there, we always find something new.
