A common meme in the competitive Guilty Gear scene is "no Baiken, no Buy", referring to how badly people want Baiken, and will refuse to play until she is added. Let's talk about that, people's perception of the character, and how important characters are in general for fighting games.

It's called kire tatami to differentiate it from iad tatami. Kire tatami is done during the iad motion which makes it arc up and down, iad tatami is done after iad which makes it go forward with the iad. Kire tatami is the one you use more because it's faster but iad tatami has its uses too.
Where does the "Kire" term come from?

The term probably comes from JP players. Well... it's easier to say Kire Tatami than TK IAD Tatami

Alright so what I gathered from Japanese websites using my mediocre Japanese, is that "Kire" (キレ) means sharp, so it's basically a sharp tatami gaeshi. That or it's the "Kire" from "kireru" (キレる) which means to get angry, but then I don't really see the relation? Maybe the input is so annoying that it makes you wanna break everything lmao
I am not sure how true it is but I think the "No Baiken, No Buy" was an offshoot of the "No Mai, No Buy" from KoF XII
That's definitely where I remember it from. XII is trash tho so it's probably a good not to buy it anyway, even tho I bought it when it dropped in price.
I only heard it from r kappa way back when during the xrd sign days. It was one of the reason a holes there used to explain why they don't play gg.

I was a Dizzy player in the XX days, I'm really quite annoyed she went from "main game" status to "DLC" status. Let me play Ky's wife from the start dammit!

Dizzy will be interesting given how much knockdowns changed in this game.
Characters are a big selling point to a fighting game but I gotta say that there also is a strong incentive to mix up the cast since if it's all just legacy characters then there isn't so much incentive to play the new game when you can play the old one instead. I am certain that teams are aware of this, and this is why even if they get sent a lot of memes demanding a certain character appear in the game, they may not add them until much further down the road. In Baiken's case it might be that ArcSys had been throwing her all over the place for marketing Xrd so she's a very obvious choice of a character to put in early DLC to get an extra push.
Strive has a completely unique fighting system as well as a healthy amount of new characters so the argument that switching through the cast isn't meant for it specifically. I'm referring more to the idea of roster building as a whole. For instance, people who are theorizing a starting roster for a game like SF6 and it's essentially, "So here's 20 characters who are already in SFV and, I dunno, Makoto and Fei Long." At that point you might as well just make it an extra season of DLC on the existing game. I say devs should rotate the legacy roster, like how SFV's launch roster had a lot of Alpha characters who skipped appearing in SF4. Also bringing in new characters is good to help give the game a unique identity.
If only fighting gamea these days just update the game with old characters and had new ones as DLC. It does sound like they're rushing the game and just pushing it out for marketing whoever was planned to be upcoming

The incentive to play the new game goes beyond just the characters you want to play as. You mentioned some of them yourself. There's new mechanics to play with, new blood, and also other characters to face against. If Bridget was in Strive, for example, I'd be more interested in playing this game rather than +R for the aforementioned reasons
@@iokuu SFVI may not be rushed but SFV definitely was, and i'd argue that Strive was rushed as well considering all the single player content they promised to add in a later date (combo maker, digital figure mode, expanded room customization) + problems with lobbies + the whole "communicating with server" stuff. 7 years between Xrd -Sign- and Strive isn't really a proof of strive not being rushed as even when REV2 launched in early 2017 what Team Red had in mind was to continue the Xrd series with REV3, ArcSys probably didn't think about "rebooting" the franchise with an entirely new game until mid/late 2017.

When I first got into GG it was XRD2 and I love Baiken so I was waiting for this, been using I-no in Strive so far and I love her too but I’m excited for this
I'm one of the casual dudes. I'm flaming hot garbage at GG. I'll likely not play for very long, but I can't wait for the next season. I Just absolutely love the visuals and feel of the series.
I'm low key excited for Baiken as a Potemkin player, I'm not sure if I'm going to learn her myself (I might) but at least locally brackets are stacked with nago and ram and I'm ready for them to (hopefully) have a bad matchup to deal with too for a change (nobody plays Axl even though he's nutty, don't ask me why)

I am still on DBFZ because DB is my most cherished IP of all time. Even though I watch a lot of content on newer games like Strive, they haven't grabbed me in the same way.
Sol and having rollback are cool and all, but I just don't get the same feeling as watching and playing DBFZ (even if the netplay is pain 😭)

Any type of defensive character is gonna be refreshing, though I'm interested in if they're gonna keep up the trend of DLCs characters stacking more and more meters and consequently difficulty from micromanaging 80 different things.

Imagine not buying a game because the one character you want *Might* not be in it. I would’ve played the game with or without her. And I would’ve been fine.
Although I am extremely happy that she’s coming to Strive
It makes some sense. Especially for people who stick to specific mains. If you like a character in a series and they aren't in the new game, the only real reasons to invest in the new game before your character comes out is to see how the new game plays or to follow the herd to the new title. Both of those are fairly temporary and may not be worth spending $50-60 on.
The reason that baiken players specify Kire Tatami from my understanding is that if you just do 956 236K tatami it comes out at a different angle, so it helps to differentiate the 2 kinds of airdash tatamis

I am very happy about Baiken's return because I'll actually play her and round out my characters: currently Goldlewis, Nago, and dabbling in Jack-O and Happy Chaos. A defensive character is going to be great to actually make the Ram's and Nago's of the world _think_ a little more when running their offense.
Sales compared then/now is quite hard to compare since now updates/DLC is on demand in comparison to buying another copy of the game full price with said updates/DLC included. Not saying thats the entirety of it, nostalgia from older players probably plays a huge part in the sales numbers too.
baiken, to me, is a Tax Return Character--the people who play her pretty much stick to labbing combos/arcade mode or whatever but they WILL pay for her and that means arcsys gets a big old return on investment. prove me wrong by all means but she seems like a money printer in the same way rock howard or mileena are

Watching Xrd Millia as a Strive Millia feels like I'm watching a different character. It's like watching Base Goku and Blue Goku in DBFZ. Like, technically the same person, some similar looking moves(elbows, command grabs, Kamehameha super), but like, looks completely different in play.
That's honestly why I don't like strive.
All the characters I like in Xrd either aren't in strive, or are like ramlethal, and don't have the tools I loved playing them for.
The game feels completely different from older games. I used to main Millia in XX but didn't like her in Xrd and now I think she is fun again in Strive but I still don't main her. All the characters were reworked around the system changes. If you compare Strive to Xrd you're going into it with the wrong mindset imo. Thats like comparing 2 different fighting game even though they have the same characters. Also Milla's ability to dance on the opponent in Strive is really fun and feels within the same design spirit she has had previous games. She is definitely still fast, mobile, evasive and has plenty of options.

@@HateSonneillon no, I'm saying the disc change changed the mix process, the loss of roll and its follow-up completely changed combo structure, and trading Pin for Kapel increased air options at the cost of an amazing air-to-ground projectile.

My guess is she's only keeping her standard standing counter and it's gonna be WAYYYYYY weaker, like Leo's.
They wouldn't need to nerf her kit that much, because Strive has delay gatlings, and Baiken counter if used during blockstring cannot be held. She's gonna eat some serious 5H counterhit if she fucks up in Strive.

This is the first time I've ever heard "No Testament, no investament" I didn't even think people wanted Testament back. Good one, though.
Baiken was one of the first characters I clicked with when I got into GG. I was in the no Baiken no buy camp. But it was beyond obvious should would be be DLC, so I bought the deluxe edition and it paid off.
i remember someone leak dlc roster , i think jam just been skip/replace to baiken to raise popularity , i mean the first 3 character is been true , there is a reason to believe leak right？i like jam more btw
Personally not gonna play her but happy for those who do want her in, hope she spices things up for matches as well like happy chaos did for me. I think playing against defensive characters can be fun. Tho my perspective compared to someone who's good at the game is wildly different. Thoughts?

Honestly, thx for this video, it gets really tiresome, when you really like the charachter and enjoy her gameplay, put a lot of work into practicing her in training mode and trying to improve, and everyone just memes on you, because they think you dont actually play Baiken, or only play because of BOOBA. Not all of us are like that, I personally played her in Xrd mostly because of playstyle and cool factor, not as a horny pick (probably would have chosen I-no or Millia otherwise), also I find her look from XX better. Bought Strive anyway, though playing without relying on azami was tough at first, got to heaven anyway, excited for her release in Strive. My Japanese gf who mains Baiken says kire translates to "sharp" but she interprets it as meaning "cool" or "not easy". So I guess its the not easy tatami technique.

I think most people who ask for Xrd or XX characters in Strive have not played those characters in earlier games or even played those earlier games half the time, especially since most people who actively play those character don't even want them back because they know what needs to happen to there movesets and gameplans for them to work in a game as toned down and fundamentally different as Strive, people just like the look of a lot of older characters like Johnny, Slayer and yes, Baiken and want to use a character with a similar aesthetic in the game they do play
I was expecting the softly spoken LK to say "the reason is-" with the pleasant music to be cut off with him screaming "THIRST!" with heavy metal thrashing around in the background. Also this "no X no buy" is going to be a thing for the next BB fighting game whenever that is. We don't actually need one BBCF is great and getting players to play the next thing might be a struggle when a character is cut.

Here’s the thing the most difficult character to play in sf4 was c viper. The most fun character to play was also c viper. Her sht was so satisfying to pull off. I’m a strategy space control kind of guy. If Baikens shit is nearly as satisfying combine that with rediculos eye candy. Then I truly feel like no baiken no buy. It’s also no cviper no buy for sf6.
A couple points...
1. (Checks to see if he's wearing asbestos underwear. Nope. Eh.) Honestly, being old-school at 49, I'm good with a game being arcade-release 1st in Japan, then worldwide, then on consoles after. It adds to the allure IMNSHO. But, I'm certain economics dictates otherwise.
2. New versus Returning characters? There has to be a balance. Personally, I don't wanna see every character from SF2CE in the next game. As a Guile main, I'm content to have Remy and not Guile or Nash in the next game. Right balance for the right reasons.
3. I admit I missed the GG bus when it came into the station all those years ago. I'd like to play catchup. But, for now, I'm not sure who I'd main in Strive. Maybe I-NO for the guitar? The dude with the alien in the box because he's simple and annoying? Eddie's boss?

On your dbfz discussion, it may not be a perfect game but it is pretty good and without a doubt the most important game arcsys have made to date.
DBFZ pretty much funded the following 3-4 years of arcsys development. It's not my favorite game right now but strive is and I thank DBFZ for what it did

From my own experience when I buy a fighting game I only really like and play one character, so if that character just isn't there; I probably wouldn't stick with the game, so this video makes sense to me. For example I bounced off of +R just because none of the characters clicked with me.

To me Baiken falls under the "character people crush on but never use category",the only ones i can think of that are similar are Juri and Mileena. If they are not in the game, there is outrage, but once they are added, no one uses them, and complain about the state of how they are in the game. Both Juri and Mileena have both been added later, and have received multiple complaints in their release in the latest installment, so I hope it does not repeat for Baiken because she was the one chatacter I clicked with right away in Xrd, and yes he is not lying when he said she is very difficult in higher player, I stopped playing xrd later and now that she is being added strive, hopefully it will be my second chance actually going all in for strive

Baiken pickrate is rank 8th in Xrd rev2, and 4th in AC+R , so idk where is this "baiken player dont really play baiken" myth come from.

i 100% wouldn't play GGST if Faust wouldnt be a part of the cast. i play him religiuosly and no other fighting game character has come close to the Enthusiasm Faust brings me and therefore i dont actively play anything else. i am really picky when it comes to characters, i really need to click with them if i wanna play the game longer than 2 hrs.
I just think it is dirty to keep Baiken out of Xrd then put her in Sign. Then keep her out of Strive and make her dlc. I had similar problems with SFV as well.
