Samsung NX300 for $25?? Repairing a "For Parts As Is" eBay purchase

  • What up fam? I'm back to do an on camera repair of a Samsung NX300 that I bought on eBay for less that $30! The Camera is working but the back screen shows no display at all. For a camera that relies on a back screen for everything really, I need to try to fix it by either determining what parts are faulty, and so replacing them, or hopefully just by using what I have in front of me to troubleshoot and see if there is a simple enough fix. I have fixed broken cameras before, just by tinkering with them, so I thought it might be interesting to share an example of that. How complicated will it be? Who knows really. Watch and see. Maybe it can help you in your situation too, if you are dealing with a malfunctioning unit. Also, I like to show people that though we live in a throw away society, if you are willing to take the time and learn to repair things, you can find some really great deals out there.

      Thanks for watching of course. I'm glad you liked the video, and yes I agree it is a really great camera. Hopefully it stays working well for you for a long time, but if you ever have any issues with it, I hope me opening it up for a look inside can give you a heads up on where to start your own repair. Of course it's best if it never comes to that. So enjoy the NX300. I have found it to be a really great camera for travel and everyday use because of it's size. I have had an NX300 with me on all of my trips over the last few years. It takes great pictures and nice video. It will not disappoint you! Cheers!

      My friend you have another NX300 right? The 300m and the 300 are the exact same camera except for the selfie screen. If I were you Id switch the motherboards from one camera to the other and see if your problem follows the motherboard. It's not hard to do. Just takes a little patience and a soft touch so you don't break anything, but really it's an easy job. If your 300m starts acting like your 300 did when you switch up the MB then you know you have to replace the motherboard. Try that. That's what I would do. If you need a new MB you can buy one off of AliExpress. I know you can buy one there because I have. Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks for the video - I haven't used my NX300 in a while - turned it on - nothing. Plugged microUSB cable - it made a weird sound and started charging. The next day, I wasn't able to get the screen to show anything - the green light blinked once and nothing. Was able to trigger a shutter, but nothing wrote to the card. Any idea what component could be affected?

    I have the NX 500 and 300. How do you think they compare? I use the 300 just as much, not quite as sharp when recording video but I like the HD video because its easier to edit and I don't enjoy converting the 500 video before editing. I know everyone wants 4K but I feel like HD is still very nice. Thanks for posting, I have 2 300s, both need screens now. Ill check Ali. :) appreciate the tip and disassembly.

      I love my 300s too and have used them more than the 500s I have for sure, also because I've had them longer. I find the 300 takes great pictures and video is good too but the AF is a little unreliable. Manual focus is what I'll normally use if I'm honest. In fairness the 500 is a much better camera in every way. Photo quality is hard to distinguish but video it really is so much better. I did the hack on my 500s so I get unlimited recording (hasn't overheated on me yet) 2k full sensor readout as well as the cropped 4k, a pretty reliable AF and more. The codec thing is a good and bad thing but I have a work around. I use davinci and couldn't import directly without converting it to h.264 from 265 until I spent a whole $1 and bought the codec from Microsoft. Now it reads on all players and editing software. It is the superior codec, and to be honest for video I also rarely record 4k. I really love my 300s because they have been great to me for so many years now, but if you're asking me to choose, I'm taking the 500 every time, no question! Thanks for watching!

    Hi, so I have a Samsung nx 3000, looks almost just like the white one, and my actual screen is broken. Do you know how to get it out safely to put new one in? I ordered it from eBay and it just got here

    • @ogcameraboi
      @ogcameraboi  3 года назад +1

      Yes, I think I might be able to help you. First, did you buy the whole back panel or just the screen? Either way it's very doable, but the whole back panel would be easier to just replace. No matter, if it's just the screen, that shouldn't be too hard either. As far as I can tell, it should come apart much the same way as my NX300 that is in this video. The screws look to be located in pretty much the same spots, so as long as you locate them all, you should be able to pry the back panel off, gently of course and take your time with this, and then work at either replacing the entire back panel, or replacing the screen on the back panel itself. Be careful when taking the back panel off, because the screen will be connected with a ribbon cable to the motherboard, and you don't want to pull that off violently. So when the back panel comes loose, be aware of the ribbon cable connection, and then remove that gently with a good pair of anti static tweezers, and if you don't have that, something like a pen cap could probably work too. Again, be gentle, and never force anything. If you have to force it, you're doing it wrong, so take your time and be patient with a soft touch. So many of these small components are easily broken, but don't worry, I'm not trying to scare you away from doing it, just cautioning you to be easy with your approach. Once the ribbon cable is disconnected, the back panel will be off, and you can go to work on the screen. There are probably a few screws holding the screen to the back panel, so you'll have to locate them and undo them. Once you do that, it should come apart, and then you'll replace the old with the new, reverse the procedure, and you should be all good to go. I found this link to give you a better idea, and hopefully some of the steps will take you through the process.

      Good luck! Let me know how it goes. I have faith that you'll be successful!

    • @ogcameraboi
      @ogcameraboi  3 года назад +1

      @@Shecrimson Oh no! Dang, I'm sorry to hear that. Is it irreparable? How badly did you tear it? Don't worry, I think we can still fix it, but it'll cost you a few more dollars if you're willing to go that route. Remember when I asked you if you bought just the screen or the entire back panel? Well I'm assuming you bought just the screen now, so the way to get around your torn cable is to get another one attached to the entire back panel. Since it's torn, you only have to remove it completely from the motherboard, (still very carefully, and again take your time so as not to bend or break any pin connectors on the motherboard) if you haven't already, and then replace the whole back panel. Worst case scenario, you are left with an extra screen just in case. It's never a bad thing to have spare parts laying around. I found I very affordable option for you on aliexpress. Check it out, it's the entire back panel for $36.55, which includes shipping.

      Order one of these, and you are good to go. Just replace the whole back, and that will be easy to do at this point for you. You're probably frustrated, and want to throw the whole camera against the wall, but in my opinion, it's worth the extra $36 to fix it. If it were like $100 or something I'd say maybe forget it at this point, but $36 is pretty cheap for a fix really. Hopefully you didn't spend too much on the screen from eBay, but what's done is done right. I've ordered from Aliexpress many times, and have had good experiences, so I'm comfortable recommending them to you. Obviously, it'll be coming from China so it will take longer to get to you, but usually like three weeks to a month at most in my experience. Sorry to hear that the cable tore. That sucks for sure, but I still have faith that you will restore this camera for yourself. I personally love fixing good equipment, rather than always going out and spending a small fortune on something new. I hope that helps you out. Good luck again, and let me know what you decide.

    • @ogcameraboi
      @ogcameraboi  Год назад +1

      I'm not sure I'd bet on them being the same. They have different pivot points, and from my experience opening a few different cameras, where the screens may look the same or similar, the differences will be in the ribbon cables used to attach them to the motherboards. I took a quick look on aliexpress.com, and there were some sellers with replacement screens for NX500's available. They were all over $100, but it may be worth it to fix your camera. I know I would make the investment, because I love the camera, but that's for you to decide in your case. I have ordered from aliexpress quite a bit, because they are the most likely source for these types of things. Good luck! I hope that helps.

      @@ogcameraboi Thanks for the reply. Yea I looked at the specs for 300 vs 500 and the display resolutions are different even. That on top of the different ribbon cables says I should avoid buying a as is 300 just for the display. Ill look for a display or another broken nx500. Thanks👍

    • @ogcameraboi

      It's hard to say without seeing the camera. You can open the camera up following my steps that I show, and try to look for any obvious issues like cables that may be loose, or have come undone from the motherboard. That's usually a good place to start. Also, you can look at the contacts in the battery compartment, to see if there is any corrosion, which you can clean with 99% alcohol and a few q-tips. Try different batteries of course, that could be your issue. You'll have to troubleshoot it to see if there are any obvious problems. Finally if you can't see any of what I mentioned before solving your problem, you'll might try throwing a little money at it if you want, by buying a replacement motherboard. That's a last resort though, and not even a guarantee, but it is an option. I'd start with looking for the obvious things first like I mentioned. 1. loose cables 2. corroded contacts 3. bad battery. You can test the battery with a multimeter to see if it's still good too. good luck!

    Was the brown one not powering up and main board replacement fixed it?

    • @ogcameraboi
      @ogcameraboi  Год назад

      Yup! I had an extra NX300 to test that theory before investing in another mainboard, so I just swapped them and of course it turned right on. Not sure if I'd do that before testing some obvious issues first like the battery, or battery compartment contacts, loose ribbon cables, and of course give the mainboard a good look. Sometimes the damage is visible, often times it isn't. Replacing it might do the trick, but it's a bit of a gamble if you can't verify that to begin with. Good luck!
