    Between Professor Kelly and AMD of "Car Car Nut" videos, I've learned a whole lot about my 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE. Everything from how to service, how systems work, and the mechanical and electrical details about the excellent details that goes into my Toyota. These have been a great education for me to understand what goes into my favorite car. Thanks!

    What an amazing channel! I am absolutely stoked with an amount of technical data in greate detail here!
    I am planning on purchasing Accord with i-MMD, and it's currently virtually impossible to find any technical information about it.
    It would be so awesome to take a look at the transaxle and HV Inverter. I will not buy any hybrid car before I can see it inside. This lets me get some understanding about longevity and how serviceable it is. I like my cars, and I keep them forever, so I need to know what's inside!

    Fascinating to see the internal structure of this unit (being an owner of a Toyota Hybrid; in my case a 2017 Yaris, with a 144V d.c. NiMH battery). In practice, if there is an internal fault, it’s most likely that a servicing dealer would replace the whole unit, but it’s good to see what it’s like inside.
    One of the points to note is that they have managed to simplify a lot of things outside the unit, in effect. E.g. these cars do not have any belt driven alternators, air con pumps, nor any d.c. starter motors. The advent of IGBTs and variable frequency traction motors has been a major development for electric traction - for both on and off the road.

    A very enjoyable & informative video, as always. Thank you Prof. I have the feeling that as E.V.s become more abundant and production increases, then the serviceable parts will become fewer as more functions are integrated into one big black unserviceable mass produced lump.

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  7 лет назад +4

      Thank you. Most hybrid vehicle manufacturers do not have serviceable inverters. Toyota is different; their batteries, inverters, and converters all have serviceable components. I believe it is to reduce warranty expenses. It is less expensive to repair them than to replace the entire unit at this time. I hope, as EVs become more plentiful, that they have serviceable components as well.

      A moot point, those very delicate interconnections between electronic processing stages is unsustainable in a practical commercial world. Has always a very informative video there sir. A very well built pieces of hardware from toyota.
      About part being unserviceable; I would say probably not.
      Smaller and more integrated (implying more special tools and training) definitly.
      I can attest about that, for example the best selling EV in France is the Renault ZOE.
      The first Gen used a set of 3 large wire with heavy duty connectors between the inverter and the motor.
      Now the new Generation has a smaller inverter with 3 copper bar that goes from the inverter straight down into the backplate of the electric motor. So unplugging the inverter from the motor require to open the inverter to gain access to the bolts holding the copper tabs.

    Wonderful video! My 2012 Prius lost power several times recently and the error code is P0A08, which is DC-DC Converter Fault Circuit / Open. According to your video, there should be something wrong the DC-DC Converter at the bottom of the inverter assembly. Unfortunately I can't find any used separate DC-DC Converter module sold on ebay. Only the whole inverter assembly is sold.

    what happens when hibrid cars and trucks have accidents?.
    There in any device or system to disconnect the high voltage in case of an accident?.

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  7 лет назад +2

      Good question. The high voltage system is automatically shut down in an accident that deploys an airbag or results in loss of isolation of the high voltage circuits. Turning off the key (power switch) or disconnecting the 12 volt battery power supply will do the same thing. I have owned hybrid and electric vehicles for 10 years now, I am not concerned at all with the high voltage system in an accident. Best wishes.

    • @Berkeloid0
      @Berkeloid0 6 лет назад

      I recently had an accident in my Gen2 Prius (2007) and the whole front of the car was smashed in from a head on collision. However the airbags did not deploy as it seems the 'crumple zones' absorbed the majority of the impact. While the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree including the main warning triangle, the car could still move under its own power on the electrics alone, which was impressive considering the front of the car was half the length that it was supposed to be. The ICE could not start due to damage but I was able to drive it a short distance to an emergency stopping area on battery power alone, which I thought was quite impressive considering the extensive damage. I was even able to turn it back on a little later so I could back it up and make room for the tow truck, which makes me wonder whether the car knows when it's been in an accident and lets you drive it in a situation when normally it wouldn't let you. The insurer deemed the damage as unrepairable and wrote the car off.

    Hello professor, thanks for another interesting video!
    I have one question concerning the A/C system, on this Inverter/Converter there's not anymore the inverter dedicated to the A/C compressor, and the connection uses only 2 wires (so HV DC) has this moved on the compressor itself?
    I remember that in the previous Toyota Inverter/converter there was a dedicated output with 3 wires, so and AC one, am I wrong?

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  7 лет назад +2

      Thank you! You are correct. If the A/C compressor has only two wires connected to it, the inverter is built into the A/C compressor. If it has three wires, it is elsewhere. Most modern hybrid and electric vehicles use the 2-wire A/C compressor.

    It would be great if you could compare and contrast this I/C unit with the one used in the Prius Prime- different component and conductor sizes and ratings, etc.

    Thx for the video. What are these vibration dampening connectors?

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  6 лет назад +1

      They are there because the connections to the other parts inside the inverter are through solid connections (no flexible wire harnesses to absorb vibrations while driving).

    What is the purpose of vibration dampening electrical connectors?

      I do not know, good question. Everything seems solidly mounted.

    • @Berkeloid0
      @Berkeloid0 6 лет назад +1

      It looks like it may have been difficult to mount the IGBTs close to the main PCB while still getting decent cooling, so it looks like they mounted all the hot parts separately and then used those connectors to get the signals back to the main controller board. This is fairly common in the electronics industry, where you have long pins that connect multiple layers of circuit boards together. Sometimes it's done due to size constraints, other times to get better cooling or reduce electrical signal interference, etc.

    Hi professor you know where I can buy the dc dc converter? Because the dealer don't know nothing about this piece!!

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  6 лет назад +1

      The dealer is the only place besides a salvage yard that sells it. Try a different parts person. It is under the inverter in the same housing.

    what's the normal running temperature of the cooling oil?

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  6 лет назад +2

      Good question. The reservoir cap has the same pressure rating at the engine coolant reservoir, It could get as hot as engine coolant. The main source of heat is not the inverter, it is the transaxle stator windings. Thank you!

    Good afternoon, professor! You have very educational videos. They are very interesting to watch. I have such a problem. I bought an American Toyota Prius 2017 hybrid and live in Ukraine. The authorized dealer does not have any documentation for this machine. I have a " inverter: P0A001C code - Engine Electronics Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit: Circuit Voltage Out of Range This sensor" . I would be grateful if you tell me. Thank!

    Hello sir can i ask you question? If the Toyota prius high voltage battery goes flat completely then how can it be charged? Only dealer can do or it can charged while driving? And also if these hybrid car have an impact at the front or back will there be any switch or fuse will cause the high voltage battery to go open circuit? Also one more if we change the hole inverter and converter assembly change for some reason do we need to reprogram the new one or it will just work like that. Thank you sir

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  6 лет назад +2

      Technically, the dealer is the only place that can charge your flat battery. You cannot drive it if it is flat. There is a high voltage fuse in the service disconnect lever. You may not have to program the inverter if it is exactly the same part number

      @@WeberAuto absolutely understand your point. Coz the high voltage battery is the power that runs the MG2 to role the car down. Thank you so much and i appreciate you took your time to read my question reply it.

      4th gen = 100A
