Some of these people in the comments are so rude. I appreciate the way you speak, you are very good at explaining your process in a quick and concise way. If someone cannot keep up with your speech, that is their own fault. Especially when you can just pause or rewind the video.
Thank you, Lisa ... I am an ageing zoologist who has only recently taken up painting,. I have worked with tigers for several years have been searching for a convincing oil paint reference. Largely because of its natural colour palette and fur rendering, your work here stands out clearly above the rest. A beautiful job.
So glad I found your channel. I was starting to stuggle with painting and trying to get details and whatnot. I had no idea to layer down darker colors then lighter ones. Plus you explain so well!
Very nice instruction Lisa! Many videos entitled "How To" are just time-lapse paintings set to music. They can be fun to watch but you don't learn much. Thanks for meaning "how to" when you say it. I learn something every time.
The blue(ish) of the background with the Orange(ish) of the Furr was a brilliant color pallet! The detail, OH THE DETAIL, makes me wanna cry XD BEAUTIFUL
I love your videos so much. I chose this timelapse/tutorial to paint for the first time, and while it took me hours I'm happy with the result. Your very detailed and explain everything well.
I use to be really good at art but quit taking classes because I didn't want to follow the rules the teachers would put down for each assignment. I'm trying to get my groove back. I love your explanations. I really hope this helps me and I can try and keep myself from getting frustrated because I love art and seeing the end results. Thanks for posting! Especially this one - I love all cats, but lions and tigers are my favorite.
I love watching your channel! I have learned so much, thank you. I am an armature artist, and you have given me so many helpful tips on how I can get more depth and detail in my work, and make my work look more realistic.
furr looks really thick and real.. nice work! i love to watch you paint.. i love you explain the decisions going on while painting to consider.. your a wonderful tutor and very inspiring! I want to push myself to do better work and LOVE your techniques you teach! THANKS!!
Brisin Gar If it makes you feel better I did have him drawn out on another piece of paper, then I used transfer paper to get the drawing onto the canvas :D
+Lachri Fine Art I am an art teacher in N.C. and my 6th graders are studying John Banovich and learning about the connection between art and wildlife conservation. They are painting wild animals and I was wondering if you would donate some of your time to skype with us and talk to the students about your process and painting techniques? Thank you!
Because there's trolls and assholes everywhere on the internet. They are sad little low life's with nothing else to do but try to bring someone else down to make themselves feel they have some power over how others feel. Which is a load of rubbish of course. They have power over nothing. :)
I think you're wonderful, and I'm really impressed by your paintings and painting style. You are quite an amazing artist. Thank you for your wonderful videos, one could learn a lot just from watching.
Ive watched this video so many times its ridiculous! Im going to go back at my tiger again tomorrow. Its almost like magic to watch you paint. Soon as I sit in front of the canvas I get scared. You should do a tutorial on that. When I finish I will put it on the facebook group page. Your still my favorite! Remember..Shhh! don't tell anybody! LOL!
Great, to the point, tutorial! I tend to have difficulties with animal fur details, particularly highlights. Now I see why! Very helpful. Thanks again!
I'm sure you'll have answered this before, but how do you work in terms of mixing colours - do you have the ones you'll use mixed to begin with, or so you do it as you go along, or a mixture of the two? I'm new to painting so I don't know if this would depend on whether what you are working on is in oils or acrylics. Thanks again for sharing your process and such a beautiful painting too. I'll have to make a bit of time to sit in front of the hour long version. I just love how great the texture of the tiger's fur is. I like the unfinished look too, especially as you have it on the tiger and on the pumpkin where it is melting into the pattern.
This is so cool. I've used acrylic paint before but I've never tried on a canvas; the tutorial is so helpful but I am curious if you wait for each layer to dry before applying more coating/different colors or if you paint over it.
I miss the days of 35 mm film... used to get the old plastic film containers from the quick film developer shops for free... easy way to store mixed paint... love your video.... Airbrush Ken
Quick question regarding glazing--Do you mix any mediums with the paint for your glazes? I always used to have a tough time getting the right consistency for glazing with my acrylics. It would either be too opaque, too watery, or have so much medium it would dry really glossy. Thanks, great video!
I love tigers. This is one of my fav paintings from you. It is a beautiful painting. I've always had trouble with fur but you seem to have mastered it. I really like that you put art out like this because it gives me idea on how to do certain things. When you drawing the individual fur in what brush are you using. I was trying to pause it just right but I couldn't figure it out. Is it the round brush you using. I'm sorry I'm not the best painter so I don't know all the brushes. Thanks
Brandon LeMaster I'm mostly just using a round brush with taklon type hairs :) For some of the tiny tiny hairs I go back in with a liner, but not too often.
I love this drawing. Thank you for getting back to me so quick. I've been trying to get out of my comfort zone and paint more. I actually have another question for ya. What paper do you us with you colored pencil art?
Nerflover10097 I transferred it. I have to erase too much when I draw, and had I done that directly onto the canvas I would have smudged up my background. By drawing it first onto another piece of paper, it helps keep my canvas clean :)
Such a beautiful paint you are a very talented artist , love the way you are explaining everything is such detail, one question Lisa do you suppose to varnish over any acrylic paint? And what kind of varnish do you suggest ? keep up the great work and God bless you
hi i am working on an art project for school. i have done a tiger and 2 cubs and i am just starting to paint it. how can i bring life into the painting as i progress. i really want my painting to look life like so i get a good grade. please reply as soon as possible!
Lachri Fine Art Ooh. Okay. I don't use any specific brand of brushes, but I do use Daler Rowney acrylics and Winsor & Newton watercolours for my art. But I'm in university now, so I need to learn new techniques.
Blaccat8 Look up Rosemary and Co brushes. Their Ivory are great for oils and are easy to clean and they do brushes for all media as well. Not expensive either and handmade quality.
Awesome work Lisa! When you are blocking in the base colors or even layering, are you waiting for the previous layer to dry or do you work with it wet/damp?
this is so amazing. I've attempted something similar. my drawings are good but my paint is letting me down...they look flat and just don't blend. I've just started so using cheap craft paints..which paint did u use here? liquitex basics? would u recommend this over winston and newton galleria?
Some of these people in the comments are so rude. I appreciate the way you speak, you are very good at explaining your process in a quick and concise way. If someone cannot keep up with your speech, that is their own fault. Especially when you can just pause or rewind the video.
p.s. ignore the haters. the speed and expressiveness of your voice are perfect for tutorials. keeps us hooked 😊
This painting is so gorgeous! I love it! Tutorial is very helpful!

Great job! You make it look so easy but I know it’s talent and practice
I love the introduction in your videos with the relaxing piano sound! The tiger is amazing!
these are so relaxing to watch when sick, it is so satisfying to see your work

+Gi Miller HAHA Typical artist...not wanting to follow the rules :P That's part of what makes our work unique! =D
I love the stencil technique you used for the background! Very creative
Sean Hartley Thanks :D I want to use that stencil on everything haha.
I've been wanting to paint a tiger for a long time, just didn't know how to do or where to start...thanks for sharing this video. Great work btw.

Why would anybody give a thumbs down to this magnificent painting? Envious I guess.
Maybe they think it's an upside "T" for terrific? ?

Ivo Gabriel Lima Rodrigues Glad you like them :D
Its sad that when it's a school project, you don't really have much time to aim for perfection like this... This is Amazing, I'll follow that way.
Awesome video, def some inspiration for me. May I know the colours you used?
He's beautiful,You are a great teacher!!!
Really useful... thanks for sharing
the painting is so so so cool
So amazing*-* I really love it and it looks so breathtaking real :0 I absolutely would buy it
Lovely! I have painted a tiger in watercolour. It is my favorite animal to paint.

You are phenomenal! And by watching this I got the answer I asked in the Wolf video :)

Great painting ! Any tips on how to "Layer" the colours ?
You are absolutely Mindblowing

Bryce Huhtala I almost never use glazing mediums. I just use water. :)
gorgeous!
Holy moly you are amazing
Wow beautiful
If you guys can't keep up with her, just slow the video's play speed. Don't bash on her; she's awesome, and entertaining to listen to.

Sorry about that Lisa. I just seen you video on the top 5 colored pencil supplies. Thank you
Did you draw the tiger directly on the canvas or did you transfer it?
Nerflover10097 I transferred it. I have to erase too much when I draw, and had I done that directly onto the canvas I would have smudged up my background. By drawing it first onto another piece of paper, it helps keep my canvas clean :)
Nice piece.
Magnifique⭐⭐🌟👍
I wish you were one of my art teachers!
Do you have a tutorial on how to paint fur like with this tiger?
Gorgeous, one of the finest Tiger paintings I've seen. Do you ever use a bit of water to dilute the paint for fine detail?
Yes, I actually use a lot of water throughout the entire painting process :)
This blows my mind! :D
I’m painting a tiger soon, I think your tips will help me. I am painting on denim, any suggestions?
Thanks that helps me with drawing animals. I am going to try try to be an artist but i will need tips like that fur tip.
Such a beautiful paint you are a very talented artist , love the way you are explaining everything is such detail, one question Lisa do you suppose to varnish over any acrylic paint? And what kind of varnish do you suggest ? keep up the great work and God bless you
what do you mean when u say cream color? it looks like lighter Orange to me 🙂
Thank you that was awesome...and also for the very helpful tips :-)
Hey, quick q... do you mix you own colours? Curious to see what colours you did mix if you do...
Lauren Hulley Yes, but there are too many to list lol.
how long does it take to finish an illustration?
What are the brushes you use to create the different hair strokes? Looks like just a round brush and liner brush but I can’t really tell. THANKS!!
I use rounds, filbert and rake brushes :)

Beautiful tiger!! Which brush sizes did you use for the fur? Such beautiful painting!!
What type of brush (synthetic or natural) would you recommend for blending acrylic paints in a smooth way?
Blaccat8 I don't think I even own any natural brushes tbh. I'm using taklon brushes at least 90% of the time :)
Lachri Fine Art Ooh. Okay. I don't use any specific brand of brushes, but I do use Daler Rowney acrylics and Winsor & Newton watercolours for my art. But I'm in university now, so I need to learn new techniques.

Dead Light Amazon :)
Very informative!
