  • So in this video I shall have another go at the lost PLA casting method, in aluminum. The model i am going to try to replicate in aluminum is a triceratops found on Thingiverse (link at the end of the description) slightly modified in FreeCAD (a few runners added to improve the casting process and a square base), 3D printed, encased in a mix of Plaster of Paris and PLA then cured in a kitchen oven. The aim of this project was to have the mold done with regular Plaster of Paris bought from the hardware store and fine sand. The scrap aluminum used was melted with the waste motor oil forge I have build last months. There are a few more videos about it on my channel, so feel free to check them out. The results are good, in my opinion, they might require further refinements on the esthetics, but overall it is clear that the lost PLA casting method works with regular Plaster and it can produce usable parts.
