From birds to mink to reptiles. What animal is safe from Joseph's partnership? It's truly amazing. I bet his ancestor was the guy that said "Look! Wolf! I train."
That tripoding that he does is the whole reason that monitor lizards got their name. They do the same thing if they see a snake. They stand up and get a better view of it, they ‘monitor’ it. White colonists in various hot parts of the British empire noted this behaviour and found it useful to be alerted of the presence of snakes. Consequently this whole family of lizards got named for this iconic behaviour. I own a freckled monitor and he does exactly the same thing. The more worried he gets by something in the distance the more he ‘monitors’ it.
I was watching Kenan at NERD and they mentioned something about birds and being able to train them and for them to "love" their human. It hit me the raptors and birds are two of a kind. You're really onto something here.
@@cindybird2250 Darn straight it was! Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed. Always looking forward to these vids and also with the addition of Boon. Can't wait to see how much he progresses in the weeks to follow.
I used to feed wild lace monitors for years one in particular became a regular visitor, even into the kitchen looking for food( they could smell chicken necks from miles away) but to train one is still amazing to me. Definitely want to keep watching how this goes. A 5 foot monitor after food has only one intention. Good luck.
You can tell the raptor enjoys your presence. The tongue flicks, the attentiveness when you're around, the quick response to your calls. Very impressive for someone who didn't have much experience with reptiles. Keep up the great work :)
It might also be helpful to add a second call to signal a tradeoff. Reptiles are very defensive when it comes to food, and any movement from the prey makes him think he still needs to kill it rather then you offering something easier to eat.
He is the epitome of alertness. Pretty sure you are right about the strange dog being the reason for his stange behavior. As Always, May God Bless you and yours!
In h.s. our biology teacher had snakes , bugs, lizards, frogs. One Lizard named Monty, was a 6 1/2 ft Nile water monitor. About 2 feet wide maybe more. Big guy. In the classroom. I was handed over the responsibility of giving Monty baths. IT WAS AWESOME! Mr. O'Leary would take him for walks in school and outside on a leash. Kids would bring in roadkill and packs of chicken, the shop class provided the wood chips. Gotta love the 1990s and our wonderful teacher, Mr O. Thank you for sharing. Super cute and very fast.
what are called Nile Monitors and Water Monitors are distinct species, though similar. But Nile Monitors aren't by and large great pets- they are aggressive, they bite and they are fierce. There are a lot of Asian Water Monitors and subspecies, but the can get really big. Niles are a lot leaner than Water Monitors. It sounds like you had a Water Monitor, which can be pretty tame and docile and really big. Water Monitors are from Asia and obviously Nile's are an African species. I worked in Pet stores during the highly irresponsible days when herp trading was extremely sketchy and we had lots of large monitors. Niles were the Monitors we were the most wary of, because they were so aggressive. I am actually kind of laughing at the thought of a fully adult Nile Monitor around kids, because it would be a freaking disaster.
Also, my pet duck recognizes dogs. He totally trusts the ones that he’s around all the time, but if a strange dog comes around, he acts totally freaked out.
I truly feel you are giving the best pet monitor life one could ever dream for, they are built for hunting and chasing after prey. This is the most enriching and intellectually stimulating life you could possibly give him and it’s incredible. Many reptiles are just sat in cages for their entire lives, most times, without the proper equipment, food, care, and attention. Raptor is clearly well loved and I bet he’s so happy to get to go out and hunt with you and bag as many mice and rats as he possibly can! I hope that this practice picks up more so people can begin to learn more about them and realize how much they can actually help us as a “working breed” of lizard 🦎
As someone who wants to have a monitor lizard later on and will give it the best enrichment possible and probably end up making it hunting for it's food as well, this is inspiring me and teaches me so much. Really impressive to see the speed of that little lizard. Good job on all the work you've done.

I really enjoy and appreciate the work this man has done with the Minks and now Raptors!! I have always been fascinated with reptiles, and have had many different kinds of them. I rescued 2 Savannah Monitors and I was amazed with how smart, fast, their eyesight, and how lethal they are with small rodents as you can clearly see on these videos. Please don't go out a buy one of these reptiles until you read a book on the care and feeding of them!! They are not cheap to house or care for! Plus they have very sharp teeth and can take off a finger with little effort! Always research any exotic pet before you buy one. Keep up the amazing work with the Minks and Raptors!!
Just an idea for consideration. Those black pipes you have to offer shade for cooling off in the sunny areas might get hotter than outside temps. Being that they are black in color they absorb solar energy in the form of heat. One thing that you could do is paint them with white paint or find a white colored option. Just an option to think about, it may not be necessary. Keep up the awesome work!
Training videos are my favorite and we have both Raptor who is a totally different class of animal and Boon who is hopefully one of the best Mink ever.
I love how he treats the reptile like a mammal. Its the hardest thing for me to believe...love this video!! Great guy he has a connection with creatures.
I absolutely love that you're training a monitor! This is great, and I expect that, so long as civilization doesn't totally collapse, I expect that you'll be one of the future's best sources regarding monitor culture!
I get the feeling with the trade off that he is focusing more on the different scent of the too prey items than the looks of them. If you have to make it easier for him, scenting the one item with the other (aka rub them against each other) might help. Good luck with his training! I think he is doing great.
I had heard of training monitor lizards but to train one to do something as complicated as a food exchange as well as you have is impressive. Makes me wonder what can be done with more time and experience. Maybe ten years down the road you will have monitors trained as well as your mink. Also thank you for approaching reptile keeping and enrichment in a different way yet still doing your research and being willing to learn. Also I would definitely try having something to signal you going to do a to food exchange. If you have different things that you can associate with a prey item he really likes in order to then use those tongs when you do a food exchange. Anything you can do to make the other prey item look or smell better so he gets distracted by the better item and forgets about the prey. Just doing what you are now might be making him just nervous enough to drop the mouse and not be super comfortable eating but also that might have partly because of the dog he was scared of.
So cool to see how smart these guys are. From being able to tell a new dog in the distance to be weary of, to knowing you're trying to scam him out of the rat he was keyd on. Awesome progress so far, I can't wait to see how this develops!
love that he gets to have some free time outside. you may want to ramp up the tong training when feeding to help re-establish that connection with food. he responds to your call, perhaps introduce a slightly different call into the exchange training so he learns that means 'drop' as he already responds to that call meaning food (which in the past he has always been able to consume). He certainly has the ability to learn different calls by the looks of it and the training you do is amazing.
Go go Raptor. This new sub series with him has been interesting. Teaching a reptile something this complex, alot of time, and real interesting to see progress. Take care and good content man. From Scotland.
Raptor is so intense! I thought the mink were dedicated hunters, Raptor makes the mink look lazy by comparison. That is a high bar indeed. He has so much intensity and explosiveness, so cool to watch! And to have a highly skilled trainer like you, Joseph, we are all really lucky to have access to this content. I love it so much.
I think if you make the trade off seem more alive and exciting, he might go for it more consistently. When we saw him hunt the mice he would always drop the one he killed for a mouse that alive and running around.
Wow raptor is looking as fantastic as ever! Love the condition he is in probably one of the best conditioned captive monitors on you tube probably just as fit and conditioned as a wild one and just as quick your training is giving him a lot of valuable exercise keep this going whatever you do don’t ever give up on him and I hope as many large monitor keepers as possible see your videos and take note and learn from this. One thing I hate more than anything in reptile keeping is seeing large monitors in captivity that have lost so much fitness and conditioning that they look clumsy and can no longer run or even walk properly! Raptor is the real deal and can probably do everything a wild monitor can do fantastic! Oh and loved how he didn’t want to trade the big rat for the smaller one he knows what’s best ha ha!

make a different sound maybe like a click when you actually feed him ive trained my monitors to the word of i got food and it triggers them when its food time , maybe whistle to hunt and attack and click to trade food ?? maybe ball training him too when he see the blue color ball he will maybe drop what hes doing to see if they ball also has food ? maybe just some ideas
I'm not really in to lizards or animals really but I must admit I love Raptor he is amazing. The speed is unbelievable. Thanks for uploading these videos I may be becoming an animal person.
Great job with Raptor! But just read today that some mink farms out there took a terrible hit from COVID, that the workers that fell ill had unknowingly infected the mink. Double and triple check everything and everyone from the outside and keep your whole family and critters safe! Love you all out there! 💖💖🥰🥰🤗🤗🤗
Some suggestions to try when trading him later: make the food you offer more enticing (like you said), just get him to bite the tongs and then trade the food, or I guess you could train a dog to freak him out whenever he kills something (I'm sure you could manage it LOL).
I was thinking that maybe a bloody piece of meat would have been more effective than that... unhurt little rat... but then again I haven't handled animals in that way so...feel free to correct me.

Dude, you and your creatures are amazing. Same goes for your wife, not many would put up with living in a zoo.
Remember how he leaves what he already caught and go chase after other mice back when he's in the birdcage? Maybe use live bait to trade off will work better?
Great video! Very nice shots, real props to the cameraman! Good job, keep it up!
make a different sound maybe like a click when you actually feed him ive trained my monitors to the word of i got food and it triggers them when its food time , maybe whistle to hunt and attack and click to trade food ?? maybe ball training him too when he see the blue color ball he will maybe drop what hes doing to see if they ball also has food ? maybe just some ideas
I'm not really in to lizards or animals really but I must admit I love Raptor he is amazing. The speed is unbelievable. Thanks for uploading these videos I may be becoming an animal person.
I remember he liked the bloody chunks when you traded him his very first mouse.
Yeah, I thought so too... maybe he wants a bloody chunk of meat instead of that whole baby rat.
I'm not a fan of reptiles but I don't know why but I just enjoy watching Raptor.
Raptor probably assumes he can eat the bigger one so he’d think “why let go for the smaller one”
He's training him.
I thought I knew mink, & I assumed there wasn't much to know about lizards. Thanks for educating me. That animal is amazing.
Do you still have the chickens and also lamby also can we have another day in the life video
No chickens, but Lamby is doing great!
Day in the life videos are the best💚
@@JosephCartertheMinkMan Saw a news story that Covid took out a bunch of minks at farms around Utah. Hope your guys are doing OK.
I’m so proud to be Australian when I see Raptor. My nickname as a kid was Perentie because I love monitors.
Im staying subscribed until that lizard is 5ft. long !! and the dogs have to watch out !!Ha,Ha !
My late black throat monitor loved lure chasing pheasant wings outside. We used 3 pulleys and a cordless drill. His blurst speed was incredible, we miss him .
