Please do more videos on recycling/upcycling leather goods. I found the tip of using the second hand leather goods as patterns for gifts a great addition to this video
In the springtime, I buy long leather coats of fine garment leather for about $20 or less. I repurpose the silk linings and some of the leather (kid skin, beautifully dyed leathers, etc.) make wonderful project pieces for the cost of nearly nothing. A few years after The Matrix movie came out, I scored a few full length, black men’s leather coats for $15 each. I’m still using some of the pieces all these years later!
You GO Girl!! I have an old leather jacket that I envisioned repurposing to a leather purse just to see if I could (I thought it too ambitious); I came to YT in search for repurposing leather, and your comment found me!!! Inspired by the entire comment!
Another good leather element. Hey, turns out I am a re-purposer too and have squirrelled away belt hardware, used items for patterns and other clasps and hardware I find. I thought I was just cheap...who knew, I was being smart :)
Great ideas! Along the same lines, I have an old set of boots that I've had for almost 15 years and they're about done, but I can't bear to throw them out, so I'm planning on using the leather to make a sheath.
Handbags and jackets can be divided into panels and used to create a totally different item. Line wallets, guitar straps from sleeves, zippered clutch’s and make up bags.
Chuck, I love these videos! I love your attitude and you’re so inspiring! I’ve watched countless videos from this channel and I just love all of these ideas! Thank you for taking the time to film and share your work!
Hi Mr. Dorsi. I enjoyed many Leather making videos. Haven't done too much. I have to get back to studying math. Some I haven't had. Alot. In my confusion I was able to run some through AI Copilot. Like simple circuit calculations. Moving toward Linear Alg. and writing eq.s from circuits and having the AI perform or at least double check it. It can do some and I believe uneven tension problems as well. It is also said to have helped a guy w/ Minecraft while he was playing it. It will probably become a integral part of everyones life / equipment. So we're going to need a way to carry it. It integrates w/ phones. This stuff is like Star Wars. I'm imagining a belt akin to Star Wars. Low key laid back but ready for any problem. You got your Droid Phone w/ AI helper, couple mace slots, flashlight, knife holder, . . . any color. Be interesting to see what people come up with. (When I asked Copilot about the Pad sizes for Surface Mount it gave them to me and when I asked it if the Pads needed to be rounded for reflow soldering it came back with affirm. lol. There's Wave and Reflow)
I got a Coach bag for 50 cents a few years back. Unfortunately, I didn't know what a Coach bag was. So after I pulled it apart and used it for the project I was making, I told my wife, "If you ever want a really nice purse, get a Coach they are made really well." The look she gave me when she realized I had just cut up a Coach! Aww well, It turned into a few really nice sporrans.
Founds lots of D-Rings and buckles and hardware from thriftstores for price of peanuts. Also, even if you are not a leather-crafter, you can get great Leather shoes from thriftstore, get them properly cleaned and shined from a cobbler or do it yourself and you got yourself 300 dollar pair for just 10 bucks.
Hi Chuck, I just watched this today, June 20, 2021. We moved to El Salvador as missionaries four years ago. I started working with leather to make me a new case for my sunglasses. Four years later, I’m making wallets, bags, Bible covers and phone cases, all made from leather purses, boots and bags from a local thrift store here in Santa Ana, El Salvador. I have gifted all of my projects. Recent requests have been a steering wheel cover (this is a daunting task for me but I’m doing it) and a laptop computer case. I also use beautiful leather coats, here they sell for $2 - $4, great use for a London Fog but it’s way too hot here for a leather coat. Your videos have helped me a lot, thank you, Tom
I've learned a lot about construction techniques (and about what methods last) from taking things apart. Could you do a video just on different methods for holding edges together to sew?
🟡As a leathercraft novice, I've got a lot of excellent information from your Weaver videos, Chuck. I don't often hit the SUBSCRIBE button, but I thought it about time to add your channel to my subscriptions. Keep on with the good work, mate.
Hello Chuck, thank you so much for your inspiration’s! I decided to comment on this video (I’ve watched many of them) and, this closely matches my idea. My daughter just recently got rid of a top grain leather couch. While it was on the way out the door I ‘stripped the back off. I now have a boatload of fine leather but it is also very thin. Can you share with me (I’m sure others would be interested as well). What kinda projects could I use this for? It is died in a light cream/white color so I’m sure I could change/darken it if needed.
Knight 4 Today Start with small projects, coasters, bracelets, cuffs, jewelry and belts. Most of these you can use cheap or generic tools with. An exacto knife, set of dividers, and a hammer can be used to cut and rivet your projects together. A couple of dyes and some antique gel and everything looks awesome.
Givin away my secrets! Hahaha, i like to pick up aprons, bags, and anything with hardware for pennies. just for the D rings, clips and anything i can reuse... 🤗
I do this all the time. I've got some killer conchos and other hardware from thrift store bags. I recently got a Frye bag for $10 that had a small area where the finish was removed. It's gray leather and getting a whole new dye job with some added frills.
I really enjoy your videos they’re very helpful to me. I have an topic for a future video, pyography on leather a.k.a leather burning. I’ve started to experiment with it a little and I like it so far.
Have you or would you demonstrate how to make a simple waistcoat/vest? I am wanting to make a ladies one for myself but using older traditional methods of finishing, like leather bias (not sure of the term) on the pocket tops. Hand made buttons etc? PS, Love your channel & your enthusiasm
Also, leather jackets can be a good resource for beginners to practice garment weight projects or repurpose for liners. $8 for a leather long coat or motorcycle jacket will make bracelets and drawstring bags in the dozens.😎👍
Thanks you Weaver Leathercraft, during the past year I've learned so many things from you! I have had a question for some time now, I've been wanting to make turnshoes, everything is working out so far, but I have put my project on a hold since the stitching is different then usual, would it be possible for you to explain how to do proper box stitches? (Since i think it would look much better with them)
Chuck, In all of your great tutorials, I have never really heard the weight of the leather you use for projects like wallets or phone/iPad covers mentioned. I have also been watching RUclips videos on how to make a lather sheath for my Leatherman multi-tool, and they also tend not to mention the weight of the leather they use. Presently, I don’t have a gauge, so I just want to know what weight I should use for the above mentioned projects. Thanks. Daniel
Enjoy your videos ..I’m wanting to make a zipper bag I’ve made a few but was wondering if you could do a video on it. I’m still not happy with how they are looking when I turn it right side out
I just watched video where someone took their old leather boots and made a purse from them! How would I clean leather items, from a thrift store, sufficiently to sell to someone else?
Simple Great ideas for finding good future projects. BTW, I am wondering if changing a design by 30% would be the same in leather craft as it is in publishing to be able to call it your own design?
I have been repurposing things all my life, and I’m old! Thrift stores r my friends. Help: I have a box, 3lbs of fur scrap I got at an auction, how do I hydrate or make the hides softer so I can hand sew the pieces? Much appreciate suggestions or point me to a source. Seams no RUclips on this.
Yes, I imagine there’s no RUclips videos on this and I’m in the same boat. I’ve tried several things and have not had what I would consider good luck. Oil will work, but, there is a very thin line between enough and too much and that can become a mess. A conditioner can work but you’ll really have to work it in because it’s tough to get it to sink in and it will leave excess on the leather that may be there forever. I may suggest asking professional upholstery repair person.
Thank you, I actually found a video from Saga Furs on wetting the fur w water, stretching it than stapling to a board to dry. My pieces are very small, so I’m going to try washing them w Dawn soap and air dry. The worse that can happen I destroy one small piece. I will let u know how if it works out.
Then there some work belts electricians, construction, roofing, gardening belts, florists have their own kind of belts, of course the battle belts for Police and Soldiers. The nice thing is one get one they like they can keep the pattern. Leather may be really close to sheetmetal forming enough to unfold an asbuilt to a flat pattern in CAD like Onshape. Should keep the industry going for good long time. The good stuff is always leather. Haven't seen the stress strengths for safety or climbing. Wood was hard to find for longest time then I found it in Machinery's Handbook yrs. later. lol. I mean they've been making buildings out of wood for eons. So it had to be somewhere !
So I've been trying to look up if it would be worth me trying to reclaim leather from all the leather couches that get tossed out in my area. There's literally one on the curb every single day that I could grab. And I had the thought the other day that maybe I can just cut the leather off them and sell the scrap leather after cleaning and buffing. But I haven't really been able to find very clear information on if that would be worth it or not. You happen to have any ideas or advice? Thank you sir
I work the streets, my main source of leather are those leather couches or chairs people leave at the curb. With a razor sharp knife I “skin” them. The leather on the back of them is usually on the best condition, i guess, because in most cases it faces the walls. In rare occasions, the entire leather on the couch could be used. It is possible to also find leather couches at the second hand stores at very low prices.

Great info as always Chuck. Can you do a video on restoring old antique leather items that are dried out and nasty? I am working on a rifle scabbard from the late 30's, early 40's ish. It was really dried out and cracked when I started. After cleaning with saddle soap and rubbing bag balm into both sides itbhas come back to life. I still need to make new straps and re lace the whole thing.

There is unfortunately no way of dyeing leather white from red. The only way you would be able to achieve it would be by painting it and it would take several coats for sure. You would want to use a deglazer first to remove any top coat and that may help to lighten the red a little bit. Hope that helps!
Hi there, It is possible although it can be tricky because we don't know what kind of leather was used on the purse. Great ideas Chuck! I like the idea of using an old purse for a pattern. I always save the hardware off the old belts and purses.
Good info and great point about not directly copying the "pattern" of somebody else's work.
I love thrift store purses for all the hardware and zips
And old leather jackets for all the leather to play with
love this segment. Such great energy from Chuck!
Absolutely contagious!
Thank you, Max!
I bought about two dozen odd purses/bags at a local auction for around $8 out the door. LOTS of good hardware.
Very cool!
That is a fantastic idea! I never thought about that. Thanks for the idea. Definitely something to keep us busy while stuck at home.
Another good leather element. Hey, turns out I am a re-purposer too and have squirrelled away belt hardware, used items for patterns and other clasps and hardware I find. I thought I was just cheap...who knew, I was being smart :)
A garage sale tool belt, with two large pouches, gave me enough really heavy leather to make three knife sheaths. $5.
That's awesome!
OLD Leather Smith here, Excellent Chuck Great 4 beginners. Thanks Chuck. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️ 🥎 🙃
Great ideas! Along the same lines, I have an old set of boots that I've had for almost 15 years and they're about done, but I can't bear to throw them out, so I'm planning on using the leather to make a sheath.

Super good advice! I will definitely be taking advantage of this and visiting my local thrift store - always fun to do anyway! 😃
Brilliant! I never would have thought of this!
All great points, never thought of the pattern.
Handbags and jackets can be divided into panels and used to create a totally different item. Line wallets, guitar straps from sleeves, zippered clutch’s and make up bags.
Absolutely, the possibilities are endless!
Hi, you need to cover refinishing leather. Stripping off top coat and re-dyeing.
Do an episode on using deerskin leather projects for hunters! Tanning and archery accessories would be a good ideas too!
Chuck, I love these videos! I love your attitude and you’re so inspiring! I’ve watched countless videos from this channel and I just love all of these ideas! Thank you for taking the time to film and share your work!

Hi Thomas!
Wow, thank you for your comment! So glad you're able to repurpose these items and turn them into useful products! Blessings!
Leather belts with neat designs, cut to size, add a line 20/24 snap and BOOM, wrist cuff! Plain belts, add rivets, eyelets, spots or conchos.
I've learned a lot about construction techniques (and about what methods last) from taking things apart.

Idea for a leather element: I’m broke and trying to start. I would love to see a “ten essential tools: order of purchase.”
Thanks for the suggestion!

Furniture repair is a good source of leather. Will be 'upholstery grade' so it will be thinner; great for lining and such. 👍
Also, leather jackets can be a good resource for beginners to practice garment weight projects or repurpose for liners. $8 for a leather long coat or motorcycle jacket will make bracelets and drawstring bags in the dozens.😎👍
That's great advise, thank you!
I really would have been eager to see an actual project from a thrift store find. Maybe next time.
They are what we call the treasure chest stores those Good will stores . Happy Trails

Hi Chuck it was nice to meet you, your channel is amazing, congratulations!! If any time do you need a camera operator let met know!!
My sister in law goes through purses like water. Not on do I save the hardware, but also some of the zippers. They come in real handy.
Simple Great ideas for finding good future projects.
BTW, I am wondering if changing a design by 30% would be the same in leather craft as it is in publishing to be able to call it your own design?
Interviewed at Spider Lifts once. Had I ever needed to produce a harness drawing out of material . . . would've been interesting.
Great advice. Went there resently skipped the clothing section. Not anymore. 😀

A lot of folks will cut the back of the couch where the leather hasn't been sat on or exposed to any wear and tear. The leather is absolutely usable!
Thanks, great idea.

How to re dye leather and seal
Hi, is there a way to dye a red leather white?

Hi Judith,
See if this video helps! ruclips.net/video/phAeANzrP2w/видео.html
I have an old leather purse that I'd like to bring back to life. It needs to be re dyed is that possible
Hi there,
It is possible although it can be tricky because we don't know what kind of leather was used on the purse. What thrift stores do you have. I have 7 Goodwills and never find ANYTHING
I've not had much luck at Goodwill but there are some local shops around that have better items. Look for the local mom/pop thrift stores. They tend to be tucked away behind a shop sign thats falling apart and stuff crowding the windows lol. Makes me feel like im on American Pickers looking through these places but you can find some nice items when rummaging.
@@graffatag sure haven't seen anything like that around here :(
Lots of churches have resale shops cheap.
This is exactly what I'm doing! My first leather project was a $3 belt from Goodwill that I turned into a belt that looks like this i.ebayimg.com/images/g/Pv8AAMXQBg5Rxkb7/s-l1600.jpg and it costs me like $15 total.
On a side note, what do you call those hangars that the chain is connected to? I'm having trouble finding those in a nice sturdy form like that, everything I see is like picture frame hanging stuff.
Absolutely ... I buy women's leather coats and jackets in the price range of $10 to $25 ...
I want to recycle leather by composting it with binder n plant fibres to be used in industrial use
👍
hi..do you teach?

Are you referring to classes? I do classes here and there but I will be teaching a class in Sheridan, Wyoming at the Rocky Mountain Leather Show.
