  • Today I bring you a short but sweet collection of outfits inspired by cottagecore and mori kei/hobbitcore aesthetics. While these looks have been blowing up all over social media, I think it's still a challenge for curvy and plus-size bodies to find resources and inspiration sometimes.
    Small boutique brands still mainly carry things in sizes small and medium, not allowing for diverse body types to enjoy their clothes. I don't think you have to have a model-perfect or even a small body to craft a wardrobe that reflects your aesthetics. So I hope this wardrobe video inspires you, even if you aren't plus-size.
    Some of the items featured in this video are homemade (all the skirts and stays) and I have a few tutorials on some of these items if you're interested.

      I have some old renaissance faire pieces that would absolutely lend themselves to a piratecore look.... Maybe more to come? Haha, thanks for the feedback, maybe I'll wear trousers a bit more often

    As a plus sized woman who also loves cottage-overlapping-with-goblincore and mori kei fashion, this is a very welcome video. One thing I've been considering lately is adding embroidery to some fast fashion pieces to make them more cozy looking.

    • @OdessaDenby

      I think that's a great idea! You don't have to make your clothes from scratch to customize your wardrobe.

      Actually I think a full figure lends itself extremely well to a romantic style, it doesn’t look costume like or silly (especially with those subdued natural colours) just beautiful, graceful and timeless.

    Omg yes. It's soo true that plus size fashion falls in the dichotomy of either covering up completely or baring it all in scantily-clad clothing...

      I mainly stick to fashion that is, at least somewhat, functional. My homemade apron has seen me through all kinds of gardening and household tasks, even making paper mache for my recent mushroom hat project, which is very messy indeed!

    Loved this video! As a long time fan of Mori Kei, I loved your everyday wear look. I think there is a slight difference between Hobbitcore and Mori Kei. Mori Kei gives Ghibli or fairytale vibes imo, it's very pretty. Hobbitcore is similar but I feel it's more practical for being out exploring the woods or being out in the garden. Your pants outfit was Hobbitcore to me!

    You are an inspiration and you look lovely in all of these outfits. I think that a peasant dress is quickly making its way to the top of my need-to-sew list and should be an easier starting point than a set of stays 😁. Thanks for sharing your ideas. Take care.

      Thank you Nancy!
      I purchased mine because for some reason the elastic of this style of dress that makes it so easy to pull them on or off the shoulders scares me even more than stays! I have never worked with elastic before! Though, I'm sure there are other ways to give a similar effect without it. I can't wait to see how yours turns out~

    I LOVED the green skirt and sweater ensemble! The color really popped on you. I’m in love with Mori Garu but I found the khaki and cream colors the Japanese favor really washed me out. I ended up more “dark Mori” which looked more like what I would call “shabby goth”. 😆 I’m happy there are SO MANY different styles now.

    Thank you for sharing! I like your philosophy on earth kindness. 😁 I've also started buying clothes with the intention of tailoring or having them tailored. (Jeans are tough to tailor on a regular machine!). Has helped me find pieces I feel look really good on me by just investing some extra time or less than $20 on tailoring.

    Every since I started acting in an 18th century historical play (back in ‘05 😅) I’ve been in love with the style, but keep telling myself I’m not “cool” or thin enough to pull modernized versions of that style off in every day life. But I think I’m old enough now to just not care and go for it anyway. ❤

    • @OdessaDenby
      @OdessaDenby  16 дней назад +1

      The coolest thing in the world is to not care about being cool lol
      A lot of historical styles look amazing on thicker bodies because they are designed to create a silhouette rather than just trying to make you disappear as much as possible. Working with my proportions and shape has been a game changer that makes me way more comfortable and happy. Enjoy your journey~

    This is an incredible video and so beautiful! We have similar body types if not the same size and I tend to cinch my dresses and skirts at the waist because my waist is much smaller than my bottom half and my tiny (in comparison) shoulders/bust. Also thank you for showing stays on a plus size body because in my opinion, larger bodies are SUITED TO THEM and I only see smaller women lauded for wearing them.

    • @OdessaDenby
      @OdessaDenby  2 года назад

      A lot of the cottagecore aesthetics play very well with curves, but I see plus size under-represented online in that community, so that was part of my motivation for this video.
      I bought a dress from Target a while back and when I looked at the model photos on their site, I felt like it actually looked better on my body type than the very slim, more angular model they used because it had a large ruffle detail that overwhelmed her. The cinched waist looked much more defined on me too.
      So, it's all about experimenting and trying things on, not just going by product photos. Of course, custom making things for yourself also helps a lot.

    It's a bit ironic to me that I used to not be fond of dresses and skirts, so I only wore shorts and pants. Now I'm getting more into dresses and skirts especially being a plus size gal and finding more fashion than just jeans and a nice blouse. If Im around the house all day as I have been during covid and taking all my classes online, I'll either wear skirts or just no pants and tie a blanket around me like a dress above a shirt. Im really starting to dread putting on pants to go out now after a year of not wearing them lol.

    • @OdessaDenby
      @OdessaDenby  2 года назад

      Pants are overrated... Seriously though, depending on your body shape, it can be really hard to find a well-fitting pair of pants off the rack and not everyone has the time or money to get things tailored.
      I think skirts can be more comfortable and forgiving fit-wise. Plus, I find them warmer in the winter never you can really go to town with under layers.

      The peasant dress/nap dress trend is suddenly really big at the moment, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are options where you're based.
      Search online and I'm sure you'll find something! There are some sustainable brands that make similar styles, but they tend to be cost prohibitive to many people and sometimes size prohibitive too.
      As I said, fast fashion is the starting point for many of us, unfortunately. I never want to promote fast fashion, but working with what you have and wearing things multiple ways for years to come still does a lot when it comes to wardrobe sustainability!
      I love mori kei ❤️~ I realized a while ago that the mini hobbitcore trend I was seeing was a more western take on this J-style and it's probably my ideal aesthetic identity!

      @OdessaDenby  3 года назад +2

      The website sock dreams lets you sort by calf size! That's where I got the wool socks featured in this video. I don't think these were specifically "plus size", but the waffle weave gives them a good stretch, so they pop up for bigger calf sizes when you search. There are some Etsy sellers specializing in thigh high socks in bigger sizes as well 👍

      I love a loose, floaty skirt for hot weather. Shorts always feel fussy and awkward for my thicker thighs and jeans are way too warm for the summer! I like knee to calf length skirts (though there are plenty of longer options if you prefer) with bike shorts underneath to prevent thigh chafe if it's very hot and humid out.
