Great post, thank you! I have been to Japan 4 times and found parts of this really useful and learnt a few things. Yes, never get on the ladies only carriages, I did that once also. Keep posting!
This was a great video with so many details. The google map list is our favorite. We’ve been to Japan once and going again so this helps. Going through watching your other videos.
This video turned out so well! You’ve clearly put a lot of energy into making it, and it really shows. Since I help channels like yours grow even faster, if you’re open to exploring a few strategies, I’m always happy to chat. Keep up the awesome work!

Just got back from Japan and we used the digital Suica and Pasmo apps (set up before we left home) and they worked great! Got a Ninji wifi hotspot and a battery pack just in case - never ran out of power. Easy to keep adding money as needed. Got down to 0 Yen planning the last train to the airport. Great video for first timers!
I'm visiting Japan right now for the first time. I stayed in Roppongi, Tokyo, for a few days, then Kyoto for a couple more. I'm currently in Osaka, and I'll spend a few more days in Shinjuku, Tokyo, before returning home to the States. I've been mainly using Google Maps to get around, and I have pocket Wi-Fi since free Wi-Fi isn't as dependable, but I've still gotten lost a few times. I only had an issue in Osaka after I arrived from riding the Shinkansen (bullet train). After I transferred to a public train the station attendant had to let me through cuz the Shinkansen QR code didn't work.
@J2-Production Not bad. Once I had to come back out of a subway gate that I accidentally entered and it wouldn't let me. I had to talk with somebody using an adjustment machine next to the gate. That was a little stressful because I couldn't understand the guy talking to me through the machine.
First time seeing one of your videos. Planning to be in Japan in December. This video is amazingly helpful especiall the IC card confusion and how to navigate the train system using google maps. That classic train route map looks like a bowl of noodles, all intricately intertwined, and so confusing. Thanks to you I will try to take the train on my own. Thank you so much and thumbs up!
@H.pylori This makes me so happy! Uber doesn’t work the same in Japan, and those white glove taxis are very expensive. I promise you will feel confident in your travel skills after taking the train. You won’t want to use anything else. I’m glad you found this video helpful. - Matt
Sir, I am a professional digital marketer. I watch your videos and like them very much. After observing I found some problem due to which your videos are not going viral. I have sent you a mail identifying your problems. You will check your mail. I am willing to solve your problems. Thanks.
Exceptional video. Thank you so much for your time, detail, and care. I just returned from Tokyo and used most of the Google Maps features you presented. I agree, once out of the train station start a new search via walking. I wish I had the IC card education before I went. But now I’m all set for my return trip end of next month! Thanks again!
Newer iPhones generally are able to still use the IC Card function even if the battery is flat with its power reserve, if it's registered as an Express Card.
@NotesWithNate Thanks Nate! I appreciate your feedback on the audio too - I’ll dial it back on the next one. Enjoy your trip - I wish I was going next month.
@NotesWithNate Hello again Nate. I'm working on another video and I want to get the sound dialed in the best I can. Could you tell me which device you watched this video on? Computer, TV, etc.
Good video thanks! Question to anyone. How much is basic taxi service in the Tokyo area? As in ,how much to start, and then how per mile thereafter? Thanks for any answers, and love from Florida USA ❤❤
This was a VERY useful post. I've been researching this topic for 4 years & this is the clearist explanation I've found. Thanks so much. One question: when discussing the Boarding Position for Fastest Transfer - the 1st example at 30:19 you indicate that it's the 6th car (not highlighted). But the 2nd example at 31:26 you say it's the 1st car which IS highlighted in blue. Which is correct? The highlighted in color or the small white one? Please clarify.
@evedeinlein Oh crap. I watched this video multiple times looking for mistakes before uploading 🙄. Sometimes I glaze over after staring at the screen for hours. It’s definitely the cars highlighted in blue. Thanks for notifying me of the mistake. I don’t think I’m going to delete the whole video for that, but will definitely post a correction in the comments. Also, it makes me happy you found some useful info in this video. Thank you for your kind words. -Matt
Thank you for the information. I will travel to Japan next year for the first time. I arrive at Haneda airport at 5 am and want to go straight to Kyoto. What time do you recommend I reserve for Shinkansen to Kyoto because I bring oversized luggage? Thank you
I am not able to answer part of your question because I have no experience with oversized luggage. It's been nearly 10 years since I've travelled with more than a carry-on. I simply do not know if the Shinkansen requires something additional for accommodating oversized luggage. Regarding the time for the Shinkansen, I have a few thoughts. If it were me, I would NOT buy the Shinkansen tickets in advance unless you can get a refundable ticket. The reason is, many things can happen from now until your ride on the Shinkansen. There's always a possibility of your flight being cancelled, and a bigger possibility of your flight being delayed. Plus, there could be variability in processing times in customs and immigration. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
@akiminato8445 Yes! Your ICOCA card will work almost everywhere in Japan except for the most rural areas. And yes it will certainly work in Tokyo. The only concern is you cannot refund the deposit and the balance of your ICOCA card in Tokyo.

@@MMTravelJournal Thanks for the quick response. So in the 1st example, the 5 cars in blue are good, just not the 6th car. Got it.
