    Hi great video I am a trained chef and at one time taught food hygiene to other staff in the company I worked for and did some work with Environmental health years ago when they were working on the safer food better business program. Your local council can not really give you more information on fines and prison sentences as it would be different for each case and would be determined by a court. It would be unlikely for anyone to get a prison sentence just for being caught running a business without being registered that would usually be just a fine but if you made someone ill or actually killed someone then that is when a possible prison sentence might be a possibility. It is great you are giving people the information and encouraging them to register too many people just start a business without looking into laws that might apply to it not just food but things like bath and body products or candles and wax melts or children and baby items. Also they usually don't have insurance and are not registered with HMRC they can get in a lot of trouble or be doing things that put others at risk. You explain it well in a way that is easy to understand and show it's not something to be scared of doing.

      Thank you that's really interesting thank you for taking the time to answer :) I believe the statement is more to scare people from doing it but my curiosity wanted to know why there is such a jump.
      I agree if someone were to get ill or worse I could be the worst sentence which is why I want people to realise allergens are serious. Thank you I am glad it came across well and easy to understand, I see so many comments about just selling on Facebook and I felt the need to explain it all :)

    Hey Amy,
    I have been thinking about starting to sell fondant decorated biscuits but I don’t have any customers yet as I’ve only just started up an instagram but have done my level 2 hygiene and allergen tests, how did you build up your client base was it based on selling food at the cost of the ingredients to start with until you started to create a client base? And were you registered from the very beginning even though you might’ve had no client base.
    I appreciate your videos as it seems like a lot to get through in regards to starting a business.

      Hi, yes I was registered from the beginning for ease as you sometimes have a waiting list for inspections. With clients, make items for photos and post on social media, give to family and friends to test the products. Once happy start selling for a reasonable price and as you get better increase this x

    Hi, I bake at home for family, friends and sometimes other people who order as I post on Instagram - its mainly just as a hobby as I'm only 15 and do it for fun alongside school - do I still need to register, and as self employed, get planning permission, pay tax etc.? I currently just take orders perhaps a couple a month and am not sure if I would take it further in the future yet it's more of a side hustle. What do it do?

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy
      @Sweetthingsbyamy  Год назад

      if it makes over £1000 per year, it needs to be registered :)

    How did you make the decision between registering as a sole trader or a limited company being a home baker?

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy
      @Sweetthingsbyamy  Год назад +1

      If you dont have employees / work from home sole trader is ideal, companies are more beneficial for large scale eg shops with employees :)

    Thank you for your videos; they really helped me, I run a mobile catering company and just use my storage unit to store my equipment, and I do the cooking at the events and the ingredients i buy the night before or on the day. Can I still get a food hygiene rating score as some of the events i do need it?

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy
      @Sweetthingsbyamy  3 года назад

      I would say call your local council and ask if they can do an inspection for a mobile business, I am sure I have heard it be done so it might just be you need to request it :)

      Hi I will be doing my accounts in the next few weeks so I am hoping to do a video on this. I will be using a software as from experience (as I worked as an accountant previously) I will be using quickbooks as it makes life easier as i have so much spending. However I do keep a paper log of receipts and excel doc for my order log so that i can reconcile to that :)

    Really worried about registering a bakery from home, I have a big dog and she has free run of the house.. I have an open plan kitchen so I'm not able to keep her in a separate room as the the living room and kitchen is just one big room... Obviously everything is kept super clean but will this stop me being able to be registered or getting s 5* heath inspection?
    Thanks!

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy
      @Sweetthingsbyamy  3 года назад

      Hopefully I won't be a problem I would say register anyways as it won't do any harm then discuss it with your inspector. You may be able to put her in a bedroom or study for small times which i do with mine during baking etc :)

    Hi Amy, I watched another one of your videos, where you mentioned that you don't need to register until you have earned over £1000. Does this still apply? I'm just at the very beginning stages of starting my business (perfecting products, setting up social medias etc) Do you think it would be better to wait til I am fully ready to start trading as a business before I register? Thanks, Jo :-)

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy

      Its a technicality but I would go by the advice in this video, as for example if you don't register you won't get a hygiene rating which a lot of customers look for :)

    Hi Amy , a quick question about insurance I know I have asked before who you're insured with, I can't remember who you said but I did go on there but mine cam back at £30 a month plus. You said yours was only £10pm, am I doing something wrong it just seems alot more than what you have said also it was only for £2 million and not 5. I would want to go with the 5 but it would go even higher. I know I need to be insured but would like the best deal. Tia x

      Hey, I’m with simply business. The standard £1M is £10 (this varies slightly by the odd pound either way depending when you buy) but mines £15 due to being £5m.
      £30 sounds like a lot, I chose public liability insurance. Hopefully you can get a cheaper quote using this site x

    Hello, thanks for the information, by chance, I work self-employed in construction, but I make artisan cheeses at home on weekends, I would like to register my company but continue working construction until the business can support me, I would have to pay more taxes ?

      The more you earn the more you pay but you will just need to put it through your self employed tax return or register as another business

    Hi Amy i found this so helpful i work part time and ive just started out baking for friends and family but thinking of going further with it and registering to make it a business would i be able to keep my job which is only 7 hours a week and maybe do baking part time aswell to begin with or would i be paying to much tax and national insurance? Im so confused because ive never had my own business before any help would be welcome thank you 😊

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy
      @Sweetthingsbyamy  3 года назад

      Hi, if you are part time and earning under the tax threshold and the business took you over you would be taxed very little. Most small businesses will receive tax rebates as the spending on materials is high. It would also be different as it wouldn't be a monthly payment like a normal job, for self employed businesses its done yearly.
      I informed my employer ,when I had a second job last year, who advised if I didn't go over the 11500 threshold they didn't need to change anything. I wouldn't want to assume your earnings but if it is under the threshold then you wouldn't need to alert them unless you wanted to. :)
      Hope this makes sense x
