You probably already figured it out by now, but if not. The core of baseball rules is as such.
The box is the ‘strike zone’ if the ball passes through it and the batter either misses the swing or does not swing for it, it’s a strike.
If it goes outside the box and the batter does not swing for it, it’s a ball, if he swings for it and misses, it’s a strike.
3 strikes and the batter is out. 4 balls and the batter gets to walk to first base.
If the ball hits the batter do to a wild pitch from the pitcher, the batter gets to automatically walk. (Though that might be after a fight breaks out between the teams, also called a ‘bench clearing brawl’)
An interesting thing is foul balls. If the ball gets hit too far to the left or right (there are yellow poles usually on the far left and right of field denoting the line. Though generally you can just say if it is too far left of third base or too far right of first it is a foul) if you have no strikes and you foul 2 balls. It counts as your first two strikes, but all fouls after are mulligans basically. This lead to an interesting event between a batter and pitcher recently where the pitcher threw 17 pitches to the same batter cause he kept hitting them foul. 17th pitch was a strike which ended the stalemate.
Knock it out of the park, you get yourself and any other person of your team on base at the time to come to home plate to score a point. If base 1, 2, and 3 have a runner on it, it’s ‘bases loaded’. You get a home run with bases loaded, it’s a ‘grand slam’. As a batter, grand slams are one of the greatest things you can get and it lights up the crowd.
For pitchers, there is an even greater holy grail that a pitcher covets more than most anything. It’s the ‘perfect game’ it’s when no batter from the opposing team ever reaches first base the entire nine innings of the game.
When a batter hits a ball he starts running for first and becomes a runner. If the ball is caught, he is automatically out. If it hits the ground, it’s considered a live ball and the opposing team has to either touch the player with it or toss it to the base he is running to so someone can catch it with their foot on base before the runner can touch it. That is how they get runners out. If a runner gets on a base before the baseman gets the ball, he is safe on that base till the next live ball or the inning switches do to outs. A runner can attempt to steal a base when the pitcher is getting ready to throw to the next batter, but it is very risky unless you got a lot of speed on you.
If you get three outs, the team at bat and the team pitching switches. This switch is denoted by saying ‘top of’ and ‘bottom of’. So team A at bat with team B pitching in the 3rd inning would be ‘top of the 3rd’ and after 3 outs, team B will get a turn at bat with team A pitching and this would be ‘bottom of the 3rd’.
The innings and games system works a lot like cricket though. You have 9 innings in a game and there is multiple games in a series before a winner is declared. Usually it’s best of 5 games, the baseball championship series though is best of 7.
Baseball can be very exciting but also can be very dull at times, so some funny stuff can happen when it’s not to serious a game which is what really made baseball great cause of all the shenanigans the players could get into on the downtimes of the game.
Hope that clears it up some.

When you're at the game, you can often tell it's a home run just by the sound of the bat hitting the ball.

    A few answers to questions:
    1. There are two Sox teams: The Boston Red Sox (the more famous one) and the Chicago White Sox (the one you saw Luis Robert hit a home run against Oakland).
    2. Teams swap after 3 outs. An out is made when a batter strikes out, or when running from one base to another, the ball makes it there before they do. Sometimes they have to be *tagged* out, meaning whoever is guarding that base would need to have the ball in their glove while tagging whoever's running before they make it to the base. On what is called a "force out", this doesn't have to happen because the runner isn't allowed to go back, and has to run anyway.
    3. Not answering a question here, but giving some info on the video you reacted to - A lot of these homers are hit at Coors field, notably placed in the Rocky mountains. Because of how thin the air is there, they're currently the only MLB stadium that has to use a humidor to place baseballs into and weigh them down so that they're less liable to fly out of the park as easily. There are current talks of Mexico City entering the MLB, and if that happens, Coors will be dwarfed by these terms. Mexico City will have to use an even stronger humidor.

There are 162 games for each team in the Regular season, the team record for Home Runs in a Season is 307 Home Runs set by the Minnesota Twins in 2019, that is slightly less than 2 home runs per game(per team) so on average you might see three home runs in a game. Fun fact about Baseball statistic, they were originally devised by an Englishman(Henry Chadwick) living in Baltimore, using Cricket as a starting point. He didn't fully understand the game, so he didn't understand that drawing a walk was a successful feat for the batter, instead of a failure of the pitcher, and he also created a statistic called Errors, which is a purely arbitrary measure of the scorekeeper deciding fielders made a mistake in fielding the ball. As a consequence of Chadwick not understanding Walks, he initially counted them as errors against the pitcher. Chadwick's biggest contribution to baseball was his version of a Score card which was rapidly adopted in the 1870s.

@@richardbigouette3651 😄 Thanks. I’ve watched very little baseball in 10 years since I cut my cable 😄.
You might know this already, but for others not so familiar (I’ve only been watching regularly since 2011, and am still learning the nuances), cricket 🏏 (or at least “big league” cricket such as International matches and “premier leagues”) has DRS (I forget what the “D” stands for 😅). Not necessarily used uniformly, and not used for every delivery of the ball. Mostly used for dismissals, such as to determine if a batsman is lbw (leg before wicket, the rough equivalent of “crowding the plate”. It actually has ball tracking (similar to what I’ve seen in tennis) to determine if the ball impacts in line with the wickets, and to determine if the predicted path of the ball would have hit the wickets, had it not hit the batsman.
There’s also UltraEdge (also called “snicko”) to determine by sound if the bat made contact with the ball, either before hitting the batsman (in which case the batsman is Not Out), or if the ball is caught from behind, to determine if the bat made contact with the ball, thus ruling him Out (somewhat similar to a foul tip into the catcher’s mitt). Again usually these are employed as challenges by either team rather than umpire reviews, though obviously the umpires themselves can also refer to DRS if desired.
Usually the on-field umpire will initiate a slow motion replay review in the case of a run-out, to confirm whether a ball thrown at the wicket by a fielder makes contact before the runner “is in his ground” (crosses the line in front of the wicket, with his bat or other part of his body grounded behind the line).
Also sometimes a slo-mo is used to determine if a ball has crossed the boundary “in the fly” (meaning 6 runs), or “on the hop” (meaning 4 runs). Or in some cases if a fielder attempts to prevent a 4 by blocking the ball before it contacts the boundary; even if the ball itself does not, if the fielder makes contact with the boundary AND the ball at the same instant, a 4 is awarded.

We are currently in the era of the breaking ball, i'd say. pitchers have so much "run" (lateral movement) on their pitches now, and we are still seeing absolute missles come off the bat. These hitters are so talented in the show(also a nickname for the MLB) that they make hitters like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, etc, look like fools because the pitching is such a high level. They are called runs, not points, in baseball. The teams switch from offense to defense when there are three outs in the inning. Outs can be made in a variety of ways. One is if the batter gets 3 strikes, another if he hits the ball in the air and it's caught by a fielder before touching the ground, and if he hits a ground ball in the infield, an infielder gets to the ball and throws it to first base before the batter-runner gets there first. There are other ways but these are the main ones.
Yes, there are 9 innings in a regulation game. The scoreboard showed the number of runs scored by each team in each inning. At the end of the innings are the totals of runs, hits and errors. This particular game was played in Colorado (Rockies), the home team and typically in white uniforms by tradition, Pham was the hitter, playing for San Diego Padres. The scoreboard showed it was the 7th inning. Visitors always hit first and since there is no runs for the Rockies in the bottom of the inning, seeing 2 runs by the Padres means they had already scored runs before Pham hit his homerun. The Rockies were leading 4-2 and assuming nobody was on base, it made the score 4-3. Looks like they had 3 hits and the homerun made it 4 while the Rockies scored their 4 runs on 9 hits. The board also tells me the count was 2 balls and 1 strike and there was 1 out.

The square you are curious about is just the strike zone. Any pitch outside of that is called a ball. 4 pitches outside of the strike zone is called a walk where the hitter automatically & freely goes to first base

Hitting a baseball is easily the single hardest component in all of professional sports. Hitting a Baseball consistently is an almost impossible feat. For context...the greatest hitter ever in Baseball history was Ted Williams. He retired with a .400 avg. Meaning he got 4 hits for every 10 times he was at the plate. That is a 60% failure rate....and he is the greatest hitter ever!

A few things to mention - some of the lower attendance you see is due to a combo of factors (COVID - 2020 & 2021), a bad team with 82 regular season home games is going to get less especially when not a critical game/weekend game, etc but there are some teams that will always get a lot of people even when they are not good (Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers, Yankees, etc). Definitely check out playoff games for the true atmosphere. The reason many of the homeruns were hit at Coors Field (Colorado Rockies) is because it's about a mile above sea level so the ball travels further thanks to less air resistance. A ball in the strike zone (that white box) is called a "strike" and a pitch outside of it is called a "ball." 3 strikes is an out, 4 balls is a walk (the batter gets to go to first base automatically). 3 outs ends the batting team's inning and then the batting team takes the field and the pitching team/defense switches to hitting. The bases in order are home plate (where the batter is), first base, second base and third base. A foul ball (see the foul lines) is when the ball is hit outside the field of play (like closer to the stands behind the plate) and counts as a strike, however it never counts as strike 3 so a batter could, technically, hit endless foul balls and still not get out. However, if a player catches a ball that hasn't hit the ground or wall in foul territory will still be considered an out. Points in baseball are called "runs." The box score (where you saw on the scoreboard showing what inning each team was scoring runs) also shows total hits, errors (a play a fielder should've made but messed up) and "LOB" or left on base (the amount of baserunners a team leaves on base at the end of the inning, totaled up for the entire game). So if there's a baserunner (a batter who reached base safely without getting out is now a baserunner) on first base and third base, that team got 2 LOBs. A shift is where the players are positioned (depends on the situation and the type of hitter. For example, a power hitter who tends to hit deep into the outfield will often have the outfielders play back to get ready to catch a hard hit ball or if a there's a baserunner on second base and the batting team wants to move him to third ((to increase his chance of scoring)), they might have the batter bunt (put the bat out in front of the plate and hit it just enough to move the runner over even if it means the batter is thrown out at first base, so the infield players will move closer to the batter to field the weakly hit ball (there's a lot more but just a few examples). Long winded response but hope that helps, lol.

As for pitches, a pitch can be two things; a ball or a strike. It’s a ball if the pitch crossed the plate outside of that box (the strike zone) that was on the tv screen. A pitch is automatically a strike if the batter swings and misses no matter where the pitch ended up (swinging strike). If the batter doesn’t swing but the ball crosses the plate within the strike zone, it’s a strike (called strike). The batter can either strike out on the third strike of the at bat, walk on the fourth ball of the at bat, get hit by the pitch and take 1st base, or obviously get a hit (single, double, triple, home run).

Boston does have the Red Sox.
Basically Baseball is broken into 9 innings of six outs each, both teams get to bat in each inning and each team has three outs.
The job of the hitter is to try and make contact with the ball and get it past the fielders in order to avoid an out.
The square in the TV you saw is called the strike bock and it’s the job of each pitcher to try and get three strikes on a batter (a strike is getting the ball past the batter as long as it’s inside that box), while avoiding throwing balls (a ball is when a pitch is outside that box… If the pitcher throws three strikes the batter is out, but if he throws four balls the batter gets to automatically take first base.
If the batter makes contact with the pitch it’s the job of the fielders to either catch the ball before it hits the ground (if they do it’s an automatic out), or to get the ball to the base before the batter (now called a runner) gets there.
Every time a runner makes it around all three bases and safely home he scores what’s called a run, if the batter launches the ball outside the fence it’s called a home run (because he gets to run straight home), and however many runners are on base when the home run is hit is how many runs you score (so say there was someone on 2nd base when it was hit that would be two runs).
Each team can score however many runs they can in their half of the inning until the 3rd out is called and they switch sides.
There are a lot more play options and rules, but this is the basic gist.
Also, as far as teams go I’d recommend the current World Series Champions Texas Rangers!

Runs are what the “points” are called. You score runs when a hitter or batter is able to round the bases and cross home plate safely.
A batter is “safe” when they either hit a ball in play (between the first base and third base lines) that hits the ground or other in play areas such as the outfield wall before a fielder is able to either catch the fly ball or field the ground ball and throw it the the first basemen before the batter reaches first base. The batter then becomes a base runner and can choose weather or not to try and advance to second base on their hit ball or stay at first and try to advance on the next batters attempt to reach first base. The other way a batter can reach first base
Is by being hit by a pitch or receiving 4 “balls” during their plate appearance.
A ball is a pitch thrown that is outside of the box you noticed while the batter was attempting to hit the pitchers throw.
This box is called the strike zone.
A batter is “out” if they get three strikes during their at bat, or if in the above mentioned situation where the batter hits the ball and it is either caught in the air or fielded by an opposing defensive fielder and thrown to first base before the batter reaches the base. So it’s a matter of quickness as well as power for the batter and fielder.
A strike can either be a called strike, when the ball is pitched inside the strike zone and the batter does not swing at it, or the batter swings and misses. A swing and miss can be on a pitch inside or outside the strike zone. 3 strikes and the batter is out. 4 balls is a base on balls and the batter is awarded first base without needing to hit the ball.
Each team gets 3 outs per half inning to attempt to score as many runs as possible.
A home run is an automatic 4 bases and can count as up to four runs if a teammate occupies each of the three bases.
Each pitch has the opportunity for a unique play to be made on a ball. Making chance and luck play into the sport, which can make it extremely interesting. You will often hear a play by play announcer say “that’s something I’ve never seen before” and it probably was. Lol.

hi. That square is a tv artifact that shows what's called the strike zone. A pitched ball has to arrive at the batter inside of that square to be called a strike, whether the batter swings at it or not. If he does not swing at it it will be a strike against him one of three he gets before he's out. If he swings at it and misses, it is called a strike. If he swings at it and hits it, the ball is in play, and the defense gets a chance to defend by fielding the ball and trying to get somebody out with it or just get it back into the pitcher. If it's a home run the defense has no role. The batter just trots the bases, and anyone who is already on the bases while he was at bat also scores a run as they come in. If a banner hits a home run while his teammates are on all three bases he scores four runs which is known as a Grand Slam. If the ball arrives at the batter outside of that box and he does not need to swing at that pitch, that is what's known as a ball, which is a penalty for the pitcher for missing the strike zone. If the pitcher misses that square four times in the at-bat, and the batter does not swing, the batter gets to take first base, which is called a base on balls. The fly in the ointment is the umpire, who calls the balls and strikes as he sees them. Sometimes an umpire's idea of the strike zone is pretty different from that square, and that leads to what's called a rhubarb or a brouhaha or argument between the batter and the umpire, sometimes resulting in the player being ejected by the umpire.

In baseball you keep going till all 18 inns are done and the team with the most runs win and if tied there is OT which literally adds an extra inning for both teams. Let’s say there are some times when there are bases with runners on it a home run allows all runners to hit home and that adds 1-4 points in one home run. If there is a runner ahead and a ball is in play the guy on 1st base is in danger and has to run to the 2nd base it’s like traffic you gotta run if the ball hits the floor. If it’s an out you can move forward and a tactic that’s wide known that pitchers have to look out for are runners that try to steal bases that’s when you run to the next base as a surprise to get one base closer to home

Chatwin, when you were asking about how does each team get a chance when you seen the score board at 0-0 and other scores. The boxes indicate the top and bottom of each inning, regulation is 9 innings. Each team gets plays an inning until they reach the 3bout limit. A batter faces a pitcher until he either gets a hit, gets 4 balls and is allowed a base/post as you call it or 3 strikes and they’re out. If the ball is outside the white line towards the fans on each side then it’s considered a foul, the batter can foul as many pitches they can and be considered a strike for only the first 2 strikes but the third must be within the zone and not swung at by the hitter or a swing and miss to record an out. The visiting team gets to hit first when the game is started. Until the 3 outs are recorded, they can score as many runs as they want in that allotted time until the 3 outs are recorded, then the home team gets to hit in the bottom of the inning, that represent ms the scores on top and bottom, lastly if the game is tied after the 9 innings. Then they’ll play each inning going forward starting with a runner on second base/2nd post until the team with the most runs wins.

You were right about the Boston Red Sox there just happens to also be a team called Chicago White Sox. Some Fun Facts: 9 innings is the standard. There have been games that lasted for a long time, now with new rules there are limitations in order to prevent drawn out games, but the most innings in a professional major league game was 26 innings, back in 1920. The game lasted nearly 4 hours which back then was a long time for a ball game. In 1974 the St. Louis Cardinals were facing the New York Mets, and went 25 innings, total length of game time was 7 hours and 4 minutes. Most of the time when the game drags on for that long its usually due to little to no runs. Either each team ties by the 9th inning, or no runs were scored in 9 innings. Game ends if the away team scores one more than the home and strikes out 3 home batters in the bottom of the 9th or later inning , or the Home team scores 1 run more than the Away team in the bottom of the 9th or later inning. And its somewhat common for a city/state to have multiple teams.

Baseball is a pretty popular sport here, but it is starting to decline behind football and basketball and hockey. It doesn’t help that soccer is starting to come on the up and rise as well. But that being said, most baseball venues can have a seating capacity of around 40,000, some slightly more some slightly less, but each team plays 162 games in a season, 81 at home and 81 on the road, so if the team has a terrible record or it’s a day game on a wednesday for example the crowd can be quite small simply because there’s so many home games every year and only so many people in the city to go, not to mention the games are 2.5-4+ hours long and if the team isn’t playing well people will find other things to do with their time. That one clip though where you mentioned it is definitely from the 2020 covid season. Sucked having no fans in the stands, but you really got to hear the cool sounds of baseball like every hit off the bad and every gust of wind from every swing and what not that you wouldn’t normally hear over the crowd noise.

Pitches passing outside that virtual box are “balls” (called by the home plate umpire); 4 of those get the batter a “walk,” a safe trip to first base. If there is a runner already at first base, they get a free trip to second base. Occasionally there will be a walk with the bases loaded (previous runners on all three bases), and the one on third base walks home for a scoring run. Pitchers want to avoid that situation. Some hitters will be walked intentionally if they are viewed as particularly dangerous or if it’s judged that this will make it easier to get the team out for the inning.
Another situation is the foul ball, a ball hit by the batter but going outside the baselines. If they hit the ground or go into the stands or are unreachable, they count as a strike, but you can keep hitting fouls and never go beyond Strike 2. (Otherwise, three strikes and the batter is out.) The best hitters can “fight off” pitched balls that would be called strikes but are not in their preferred hitting zones by deliberately hitting foul after foul until they get the pitch they want to go for. If a hit ball, fair or foul, is caught before it hits the ground, the batter is out. Three outs per team per inning, nine innings per game unless a tie puts the game into extra innings.
Most baseball games have no home runs, but they are not uncommon. Always a thrill, though. There is real suspense for each pitch when a power hitter comes to bat. My favorite home runs, though, are those hit by someone no one expects to hit one. In one of the two US major leagues, pitchers have to hit in their turn unless they are removed from the game and replaced by a different pitcher. Most pitchers are poor hitters, some comically so. So when one of those hits a home run, it’s really a delight. There’s also sometimes the manager’s strategic dilemma: keep the pitcher in the game or take him out for a better hitter with better chance of a crucial hit. (The other major league gets around this with the Designated Hitter rule, where someone bats in place of the pitcher but the pitcher can stay in the game. To me, that’s much less interesting.)
Defensive plays like fantastic catches and throws as well as daring stolen bases are just as exciting as big hits, often more so. So are pitching duels between two excellent pitchers trying for a no-hitter or even a rare perfect game. Baseball is a game of quiet waiting, layers of strategy and statistics, and sudden peaks of excitement and suspense. Team players and their personalities, playing history, and quirks are familiar to many and add to the enjoyment. To me, the sound of a baseball game and its announcer is a sound of summer.

We measure pitch speed in Miles per Hour. Most major league pitchers throw the ball anywhere between 145 KMH (90 MPH) and 161 KMH (100 MPH). A part of an inning goes until the pitching team gets 3 outs then they change places. The team with the highest score after 9 innings wins unless there is a tie. Then they go into extra innings, and I have seen games go as far as 18+ innings the equivalent of playing 2 games and more. A couple things might be slightly similar to cricket, but mostly baseball is its own sport. The best advice I can give is to pull up rules of baseball while watching a game. There are full games posted on RUclips.

that square is where the pitcher needs to throw the ball for a strike. anywhere outside that square is called a ball, four of those the batter gets to go to first base. three strikes and the batter is out.

The shortest part of the fence in any park is going to be right around 100 meters. The deeper fence will be around 130. These long homers are over 150

It is often said that the hardest thing to do in professional sports is to hit a fastball in baseball. Average speed is 94 mph. Batters have .4 seconds to find the ball, decide where it is going and swing the bat. They then have to hit a small round ball with an even rounder bat in an ideal contact area the thickness of a credit. The first time I ever went into the 80 mph batting cage was the last time. It felt like the ball was past you before you could even think to swing.

2:40 if you learned proper technique and hit good contact, you could 100% hit the ball 100 ft. 12 year olds hit 200+ foot homeruns all the time. However, the real question is whether or not you'd actually be able to make contact. Hitting a baseball is one of, if not the hardest thing to do in sports!

Home runs at the right moments are exciting but a good stretch of base hits, fielding, base running make it interesting

Don't know if this will get a strike but it's worth the try "What is the difference between pitches? And why are there so many? | Quick Question (MLB Originals)". Just pause a lot.
