  • EP28 - To get ready for our drydock period in september, we're preparing the ship for the installation of a bow thruster. And we find two rare anchors that match the one we have!
    Schoener Tijgerhaai (Tigershark) started life in 1944 as a canadian built tugboat and she has been in my family for almost 50 years. Together with my dad, I am rebuilding this beautiful sailing ship, to get her ready for new adventures!

    Great teamwork moving all that heavy equipment around . The bow thruster will make life less stressful for sure well worth the labor and expense .

    when i was 8 years my father dropped the anchor like this one on his foot, he had to be airlifted, still remember the dent in his foot was as deep, as his foot was high

    Did you consider using a hydraulic bow thruster, or was it too much of a hassle like the diesel system?

    • @tigersharkboatworks
      @tigersharkboatworks  Месяц назад +3

      Ah yes, forgot to mention. A hydraulic bowtruster will require a hydraulic pump that needs to be powered by something, either a diesel engine or an electromotor. All these extra steps mean losses in efficiency, so that option died very early in our orientation :)

    OK, have yet to watch the vid but going to put my opinion in already.
    1) You never NEED to have a bow or stern thruster, you can manoeuvre your boat just fine without them.
    2) It does not hurt to have thrusters, the extra manoeuvring control they add is a nice safety buffer for avoiding collisions in tight spaces like marina fairways.
    3) insurers might offer lower premiums if you have them due to the extra control.
    yes, they are not required but other than the costs of installation and maintenance they are basically free extra control for the hull.

      @tigersharkboatworks  Месяц назад

      Hahah good to start with that disclaimer, I fully agree with all your points :) now go watch the vid!

      @@tigersharkboatworks I did, right after posting my comment. :p
      I would also add a yacht-controller besides both bow and stern thrusters as a not required but nice bonus to control item. Wireless remote engine, anchor and thruster control letting you shift to best sightline for the current situation yet still have active control of the vessel.

    • @tigersharkboatworks
      @tigersharkboatworks  Месяц назад

      It looks like quite a big modification to make everything able to be controlled wireless, but I'll look into that :)

    • @jaquigreenlees
      @jaquigreenlees Месяц назад

      @@tigersharkboatworks yachtcontroller is brand name of original model, multiple versions and companies producing them now.
      The benefit of the original is they have an optional conversion module available, to convert old mechanical linkage engines to the digital wireless.
      The wireless systems are more commonly put on motor yachts but they are just as useful on a sailing yacht.

    Too funny - last week I asked about the weight of the anchor and this week is an anchor special.... - maybe you should start a mind reading business, in addition to your regular business. Very interesting video as always, thanks a lot for sharing.

    Best of luck with a fast and efficient installation of the bow thruster tube. Would it aid installation if a sacrificial plastic pipe was cut to size and used as a template since it would be easy to shape to fit, or are you planning a different method ? Best regards, and good luck to you both.

    • @tigersharkboatworks
      @tigersharkboatworks  Месяц назад

      Smart suggestion! But we're gonna use a different method. First we'll cut the holes, then slide in the complete pipe and weld it in place. After that, we'll cut away the leftover material :)
