When making characters never forget that, they all ride bikes differently. That's the best way to describe what makes a character different from the next. How true to their nature they remain throughout the book.

Congratulations on your published cli-fi story! It’s so good! I emailed it to myself, but I need to re-read it again! 😍
I’ve never written dark academia (yet), but as someone who writes a lot about university settings and ableism in academia, I felt that when you went on your rant about it! So relatable! Eee! I could talk about that with you all day! 😬
I’m excited for all you have accomplished in 2024! You queried and got an agent so fast! I’m just so impressed by that.
2024 things I’m proud of: attending my in-person PhD graduation, revised 3 more drafts of my PhD dissertation novel and started querying on July 1st, and taught my first longterm (six-week) writing class.
    2025 goals:
    - Read 100 books (already on my 9th book)
    - Write and submit more short fiction (a goal similar to yours; already revised 2 flash fictions and 1 longer piece)
    - Write a new TV pilot
    - Get into a TV writing fellowship (can’t control this)
    - Be the best writing instructor I can be with my 2025 writing classes
    - Finish drafting and hopefully at least one revision of my YA gothic horror novel
    - Keep querying my PhD dissertation novel to give it its best chance at literary agent representation
    - Create an author/screenwriter website
    - Be more proactive about advertising my sensitivity/authenticity reading services + manuscript critique services
    - Look into more freelance fiction editing opportunities

Thank you so much, Lara! I'm so glad that my little rant resonated lol. I've been learning a lot about ableism in academia as well (and have experienced it to some degree as a learning disabled person) and it boggles my mind how deeply ableism is rooted in these systems, and how few people are willing to do anything about it.
your goals and accomplishments are incredible!! & thank you so much for your support in these videos, as always

2024: The year I actually started writing more consistently again. (I find it really hard for fiction during the semester). I hit 25k on my WIP, and I didn't even count the crazy amount of words I put into academic stuff.
2025: Finish draft 0 of that book, and then hopefully I get into the exchange program I'm applying to, and can get into the module on creative writing for the final project, and do a full revision (tbh its going to be a rewrite) with the guidance of a professor at a fantastic university. After that, (since the program would stretch into 2026) we'll see. But hopefully it wouldn't need much extra work before querying

2024 was awful for a lot of people (and I was one of those people), but it was my most productive writing year (~200K words) and the year where I began to take publishing seriously! I just discovered your videos recently as someone getting ready to query next year, and it’s been very down to earth and encouraging.
One thing I’d like to ask is what advice you have for getting connected to other writers? I want to really dive in and connect to the writing world and meet like minded creatives (writing is often quite lonely after all). So far the only tips I’ve gotten by searching online are vague, like “find a critique group” or “search on discord”. In other words, not very practical. What has been your experience in that regard?

    • @lynndjung
      @lynndjung  2 дня назад +4

I'm so glad to hear that. :) thank you for watching!
I think everyone is a little bit different when it comes to finding a writing community that works for them, and a lot of it boils down to luck and timing. I made my first writing connections on Twitter years ago by posting about my own work while also actively seeking out and encouraging others. I still have a lot of those friendships, but I got lucky-we connected as people with similar interests and matching personalities (most of my friends are pretty laid back lol), and that came before the writing if that makes sense.
There are a couple of different platforms with a similar vibe to late 2010's Twitter, like Bluesky, but I know a few authortubers run writing community oriented discords with open join links! From there, you can seek out mutual critique partners, and hopefully find at least a few folks you can connect with on a deeper level as well. I hope that helps!

2024 was pretty great for me! Certainly a big learning year of how I am not up to par yet as much as I would like to be. Definitely being more intentional with my writing this year. Even though I haven't writen a single word this year bucause I am buuuuuuuuuuurnt out but I am also trying hard to not beat myself up over that. Based on the hours of work I have its just not going to happen without killing myself.
But I have potentially two betareaders for my work and I am so excited I've never had betareaders before 🥺💘

hey lynn, i would like to ask for your opinion on this. hope you'll reply 🫶🏼
my horror novel is written in third person limited - present tense. i plan on having several flashbacks for this book as it does deal with past trauma and grief. So for these particular chapters, I plan on using past tense. would this be too much/jarring for the readers? do i just need to stay consistent with present tense even with the flashbacks?
