I bought one of these on the strength of this guide and I absolutely love it! I think it might be my favourite handheld in terms of aesthetics and design philosophy. It feels like the logical upgrade to Gunpei Yokoi's original ideal. It's everything portable gaming should be: it's light, small, cheap (especially the monochrome version) and it has crazy long battery life. I really wish Bandai released this console in the west. If the very competitive price point of the console had been carried over and with a big name like Mattel behind it, I think it really could have made a dent in Nintendo's handheld dominance. I only have one game so far (Digital Monster Ver. WonderSwan) but I've gone a bit nuts and ordered quite a few more and I'm super excited to play them when they arrive.
Great episode; the Wonderswan has always been a system that I knew nothing about. It's inspired me to get the emulator up and running in Retroarch, pour myself a beer and have a bit of a Wonderswan gaming session. Hopefully some of those JRPGs unique to the system get an english translation one day too.
I've always wanted to know a little more about the WonderSwan and this definitely helped. Not a console I would start collecting for but its nice to see that people are appreciating them. I'm curious to know more about that Digimon special WonderSwan, I do love my Digimon.
I dont play any old or obscure video games and for some reason I get the biggest kick out of watching this channel. Your passion for this stuff is tight!
I'd be very interested in seeing a video where you two try & get those homebrew games working I've been mildly interested by this console for 2 years or so, very happy to see you cover it
There's also two very fun Digimon tactical RPGs for the Wonderswan that came out in English called Andoe/Cathode Tamer. The roms are easy enough to find online with a google... Though the cartridges themselves are next to impossible to find because they only had a limited release in a very small portion of Asia. Be careful that you aren't just buying the normal Japanese version if you choose to pursue them. There are a handful of other English titles too, though all equally rare for the same reason.
Pretty amazing that the Wonderswan developers offered up a consumer dev kit for customers to develop their open games. I develop in C everyday at work, so I might have to buy one and try it myself. :)
these buying guides and obscure highlights are the main reason I love your channel informative and interesting you always have very knowledgeable guest they set your channel apart man keep it up \m/
Thanks for the overview and for taking the time to list the game titles in the description as well. It can be difficult sometimes when youtubers rattle off japanese names without some text to know the actual title. Wonderswan was a great little system- didn't know about Judgement Silversword and Dicing Knight being the results of a contest with the Wonder Witch development software. That is really friggin cool, and two of the best games on the system, no less.
I knew Final Fantasy came out for the Wonder Swan but apart from that I didn't know much about it at all. I'm please you did this video. It looks like a decent machine now that I know more about it. I hope you have Kelsey as a guest more often she seems to know her stuff. I recently watched the complete original X-Box video.
MetalJesusRocks I saw a pic of you and Kelsey recently and thought she is either tiny or you are massive...or both! Out of curiosity, how tall are you? If you dont mind sharing.
I had the Original gameboy growing up followed by the color... Now older and nostalgic i wish i never sold any of my games or consoles... So i have alot of work to do getting back the gaming experience from my youth, in doing so i have come across so many handheld systems i never knew existed, so little time so little money, and so damn much interesting stuff to get. 😜🥳
Thank you so much for getting me interested in this console. I juste managed to fin a Color one (I know), but it's the final fantasy edition, complete in box, for dirt cheap! I hope Kelsey keep some of those games in her store, because although I live in Montreal, I will be going on a road trip to Seattle next year and I intend to make the best of it! To bad I won't be able to go to Retro Gaming Expo since the dates changed, I would have loved to meet all of you guys T-T
Thanks to you both for that guide! I was saying to someone a while back that there isn't much about the wonder swan on RUclips. So that was great. Thanks again

Just here to say thank you MetalJesus for the awesome videos on your channel. Also any plan to do another roadtrip style video in the future again? That was a great episode.
This seems like a dope gaming system! Old senpai Gunpai still made some cool systems. May God rest his soul in peace. PS: He wasn't kicked out because he made the VB, he wanted to leave Nintendo for a long time, but he still wanted to make one last portable gaming system for Nintendo and leave after that and that's what he did, he made the VB and left.
Just discovered your channel recently and have been bingeing your videos. I'm genuinely interested in your RUclips analytics with/without Kelsey in them lmao. Digging the content dude!
Ya know how I know Kelsey is the coolest guest on this channel? It's not just that she does the coolest videos (original Xbox, Pokemon, and now Wonderswan), but also that she's wearing a Wanpaku Graffiti shirt. That's amazing. You are the best. I hope all the internet weirdos don't scare her away :/
I was always curious about the Wonderwan. Cool video, guys! It's awesome having Kelsie on here. She's cool and I've learned a lot from the videos with her.
It really is such a great system! I have a minor obsession with the Wonderswan, which has become bad in recent months since prices on it have skyrocketed :( (doesn't help that the value of the yen has also increased)

Kelsey is amazing! She's insanely cute and has a sweet way of talking, or accent, I don't know (english is not my native language). Anyway, love to hear her talking. Metal Jesus is always inviting the best person to his videos. Amazing channel!
+Ryu Hayabusa English is my native language, but you are def right, not only is she insanely cute, there is just something about her voice too that adds to the cuteness factor
+Stevaside yeah, that's what I was trying to say... Her voice. She has a nice, sweet and mellow voice. Also, she seems a little shy, which makes her even more cute.
Of course you haven't. It was Japan only. There are many other game consoles and computer systems across the world that never came out in North America.
I almost purchased one when it was new, and I live in the USA. There was tons of hype when it came out. Before the internet, we had these things called _"magazines"_ and they told us about all the cool shit in other countries. Don't be an ass.
This is one of my favorite things you've done. I learned so much from this and am so happy to have Wonderswan in my life. Yes, I actually typed that sentence without giggling.
I'm having an issue...I recently got into game collecting after getting a Retron 5 and now I am collecting for over 19 systems. My problem is now that I have close to 200 games spanning all those consoles, I don't know where to start when it comes to choosing what game to play. (Side Note: If a game is part of a series, I am OCD enough that I have to play them in chronological order of release) Maybe MetalJesusRocks could make a video about how he chooses what to play next in his collection. Thoughts???
+a subterranean dork Well I have a Retron 5, so I can play games for all the consoles that is compatible with. I also have an N64, a Wii(Gamecube compatible), PS2, PS3, Dreamcast, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I definitely lean towards popular gaming franchises, but there are so many that I feel like the only way to pick what to play next is eenie, meenie, minie, moe...any other strategies you guys use to pick what to play next?
I had to sell my collectioñ last year snd start collecting from scratch so i thought this time id take it one or two games at a time and complete them as i buy them but no such luck, wish i binged gaming instead of purchasing but nah. Im currently collecting for the original xboc and for the gameboy, gb colour and gba. Ive got a 360 and a wii too, the n64 stopped workin but right now gba sp is my machine of choice
I know this is 4 years later but I bet you can use google translate to tell you what the Japanese says by pointing your phone at the screen of the console. Not ideal but it would be one way of being able to understand the Japanese language games.
I've always been curious about the Wonderswan, but never really looked into it in depth. Looks like a pretty sweet system. Thanks for the really informative video guys. I'll have to pick one of these up.
By the way, before saying "This never came out on the Game boy", you should check if it did. The Game boy did indeed have a cellphone adapter that allowed you to play against other players in japan. It only worked for a select number of games. It was called the Game boy mobile adapter.
Metal Jesus, long time fan bud. Thanks for all the content you bring us. Had a question though. For this game footage, how do you capture it? Is it just an emulator? Thank you!
Don't worry, this thread of drooling nimrods hard-on jousting over her in the comments will keep her that way forever. Go ahead, reveal your true nature... She'll TOTALLY want it.
Wonderswan is cheaper, the Neo Geo is probably the better console but some of the games are EXTREMELY expensive for one reason or another. It has the better controller though. I chose the Wonderswan because...well...Digimon.
***** Yeah and it's not like the Wonder Swan games are bad by any means. I mean the Digimon Games are all straight up fighting games that are canon to the main series. The Neo Geo Pocket is a very expensive console to collect for but fun to play games like Sonic and King of Fighters. The Wonderswan for me is by far the more accessible console for any gamer especially if like me you're a fan of Bandai's products. I love Digimon and all the games for the system are canon to the main series so for me that was an easy choice. The console has charm + I love the name as stupid a reason by a console as that maybe :)
I know this was 2 years ago but for anyone interested looking up the wonderswan, there was English releases for the wonderswan as it was sold in a few east asian countries including Hong Kong which English is the second language so there is some localised games in English for Hong Kong only
Actually Gameboy Color has a modem too bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Mobile_Game_Boy_Adapter (and Famicom did back in the 80s. On the WS, I would like it if the d-pads were actual d-pads. Since they're not, they're harder to play action games with. Rockman EXE WS is not that straight-forward btw. Has branching paths, battle chips instead of weapons and worse control. But man, WS Color is def a bigger leap than GB to GBC was.
*Oh, Kelsey...* I can't stop the way I feel, Things you do don't seem real. Tell me what you've got in mind, Cause we're running out of time. Won't you ever set me free? This waiting 'round's killing me. She drives me crazy like no one else. She drive me crazy, and I can't help myself.
Passin' semis on the right, now my knuckles are turnin' white... she drives like crazy! hoo hoo! like no one else! she drives like crazy and I'm afraid for myself!
USB is serial (Universal Serial Bus). The protocol is backwards compatible, so a simple, cheap adapter will do the job fine. Also, you can develop for it on any machine via cross compiling.
I'm a big fan of Pokemon and Digimon and i love the Game Boy Advance and Wonderswan also Digimon Battle Spirit & Digimon Battle Spirit 2 where first released for the Wonderswan Color and later ported to Game Boy Advance
to anyone wanting to emulate wonderswan games on a newer computer, the Oswan emulator has worked very well for me. I downloaded it to play the English Asian version of Digimon Anode and Cathode Tamers, and it ran like a dream. :3
I have that translucent green one, neat little system that's not for everyone. One thing not mentioned in the video is that the Wonderswan doesn't have a headphone jack, instead using a propitiatory one, and to make matters worse the sound is on by default (in loudest mode) so if anyone is around you have to quickly turn it down or off.
I am actually really interested in collecting for the Wonderswan. This video has been helpful, I gained a ton of new info. Unfortunately I'm not in a spot where I can start collecting for a new system, but I guess I'll keep my eyes peeled. Thanks again
+Mitchelton Dhomochevsky Yes, I met Rebecca while working at Sierra On-Line...although she primarily plays western RPGs like Mass Effect, The Witcher 3, Dragon Age, etc...
+MetalJesusRocks that's pretty cool. I only asked because game collecting seems to be a bit more Hardcore than gaming. I've been called a hoarder because I have a whole room devoted to gaming and nerd crap...luckily my wife is also a nerd and doesn't care.
Also... yes... Kelsey is standing on a platform ;)
If you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have noticed haha...
+MetalJesusRocks I thought she found a zoltar machine
+MetalJesusRocks You should put it on Ebay. Worth quite a bit now!
I thought she was floating :)
+MetalJesusRocks How tall is Metal Jesus ? Assuming he has a somewhat low ceiling, he looks like a really tall dude.
I like this girl, and I like this man, and I like video games. I like you too, dear reader.
+HotFreshTofu thanks man. Love all those things too
Hey, I read dat thing. Now I feel special
+HotFreshTofu I like said things as well good sir
I also like hot fresh tofu
+HotFreshTofu Let's hug
That is, HANDS DOWN, the most beautiful person I've ever seen in my life..
And the girl standing next to him is pretty cute too.
Totally agree, and not joking. He looks so friendly, I want to hug him. The lady is also cool :D
I wanna hug BOTH
They both look so chill, like you can just sit down and have a fun game session with them : )

I love obscure handhelds. Pretty much the staple of my collection.
1:25 I feel like he's more famous than infamous. The gameboy overshadows any subsequent failures.

I was actually watching a lot of Wonderswan items on eBay, so kind of cool to get some perspective from someone who's actually gone and done it.
The amount of thirst in this comment section is unreal
Everytime for kelsey
Metal Jesus is hot, what can I say
Great episode guys! Love me some WonderSwan, but still learned a lot! :)

+LambOfLucifer There is no way else to shoot this unless it was from ABOVE...which would look silly. I'm too tall
MetalJesusRocks
I saw a pic of you and Kelsey recently and thought she is either tiny or you are massive...or both! Out of curiosity, how tall are you? If you dont mind sharing.
+MetalJesusRocks lol i was always wondering if the girls in your videos had to stand on a box or if they were real tall!
+LambOfLucifer your handle is literally Satan's sheep and you wanna know his height??? Sad #faken
MetalJesusRocks I like the box idea but maybe it's a little to high I think it needs to be like 4 inches lower
I had the Original gameboy growing up followed by the color... Now older and nostalgic i wish i never sold any of my games or consoles...

Thanks to you both for that guide! I was saying to someone a while back that there isn't much about the wonder swan on RUclips. So that was great. Thanks again
I remember seeing the original and shrugged it off as a Chinese copy of the Gameboy. I didn't realize it was made by the former Gameboy division head.
I love that you have a Lands of Lore game box on display in the background, it's one of my favorite games of all time! Such a gem.
I am glad to see that a large canal recommends Wonderswan. I recommend some games. Like!
- Dicing Knight Period
- Guilty Gear Petit
- Tekken Card Challengue
I'd recommend the Digimon Games 1. Because they're all beat em ups and 2. They're canon to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th series anime.
Is it a Japanese only console? Like can you get an English console or game?
You learn something every minute on RUclips. I had never heard of this. It gas my interest, especially because of battery life. It might be a good budget holiday or camping system because of price and battery.
Thankyou Kelsey and of course to MR JESUS.
Just here to say thank you MetalJesus for the awesome videos on your channel. Also any plan to do another roadtrip style video in the future again? That was a great episode.

Warms my heart to see other Americans that are as in to the Wonderswan as I am. Kudos to you both, Kelsey and MJ.
It really is such a great system! I have a minor obsession with the Wonderswan, which has become bad in recent months since prices on it have skyrocketed :( (doesn't help that the value of the yen has also increased)
I think Kelsey is my fav mjr feature. Shes got nice vibes to her.
Metal Jesus has some really cool guests, I love seeing new game consoles I haven't heard of xD awesome stuff

2016 RUclips Comment of the Year.
I picked up both the original wonderswan and the color version recently along with final lap 2000 and it’s slowly becoming one of my favourite families of handheld consoles
I'm that old man saying "Kelsey! Where are the rest of your pants?"
Although I dig the shirt.
did I see you in the same t-shirt on one of metal Jesus’s videos?
Hahaha
+Geoffrey Searby Haha, yep! When she saw mine she asked where I got it. She ordered the pink one (obviously)
Is it some kind of splatter house shirt? The chibi famicom one?
Apple Bee I think he has 3 daughters :)
Kelsey, you should really consider having your own RUclips channel. The videos you've been in with MetalJesus are just great, geeky stuff.
Ahhhhhhh he's displaying 'Under a killing moon' on the shelf. I LOVED that game.
Love the shorts! Keep it up
I picked up a wonderswan when I was in Japan last year. It was super cheap I got the console and some games for less than a fiver!
+Nicktendowii nice m8

+herranton1979 you should've purchased it! They're getting so crazily expensive now, especially the Swancrystals
Nice to see Kelsey on your channel again, she's really cool!
Let's hope this doesn't rise Wonderswan prices even more, they've really risen in price the past year ;-;
Boy howdy, have they ever gone up....
This is one of my favorite things you've done. I learned so much from this and am so happy to have Wonderswan in my life. Yes, I actually typed that sentence without giggling.
16:47 that character just shows up flipping her off? lol
Very timely video, as my WS flash cart will be arriving next week.
Voting yes for a follow-up video on the WonderWitch games!!
Always wanted a Wonderswan, great vid to use as a starting point. Thanks guys
I'm having an issue...I recently got into game collecting after getting a Retron 5 and now I am collecting for over 19 systems. I'm still wondering when you will post a Xbox 360 buying guide?
I think he already did one
+ no
Ohh... woops sorry my bad.
You two work very well together it's a pleasure to listen and watch keep it up.
The reason why the WonderSwan got Square Enix's full support is because Nintendo got into a fight with them.
The Game Boy Color actually had Enix published games like Dragon Quest 1, 2, 3 and the fantastic DQ Monsters games.
By the way, before saying "This never came out on the Game boy", you should check if it did. The Game boy did indeed have a cellphone adapter that allowed you to play against other players in japan. It only worked for a select number of games. It was called the Game boy mobile adapter.

For this particular video I did use OpenEMU to emulate the roms. So much easier than trying to point the camera at the screen.
+MetalJesusRocks i can tell kelsey is single, Look no ring on her fingers

Very cool. Buffers Evolution, Klonoa, and One Piece Colosseum look like fun. Thanks for sharing.
Wonderswan or Neo Geo Pocket Color?
+Eddie W. I would go NGPC because it's easier for English speaking gamers to play the games... plus that thumbstick is excellent!
OK, NGPC it is then.
+Eddie W. Honestly, I've played both. NGPC is a lot more fun on the arcade sense. If you want more anime and rpg games then go with the WS.

Go away
Thank you for this video! I have never heard about this portable console before. Always appreciate a video that deepens my video game knowledge!
She's so cuute😍 That adorable shirt, talking about Japanese games🤓 I wish Maine had more girls into gaming.
great video guys. i just picked up a wondrswan a few weeks ago and this is great for me. thank you, you got a new subscriber
just followed both of you on twitter. Maybe I'll use my twitter now lol
Gosh, I bet Kelsey's cooter must smell very nice!
OMG imagine playing flappy bird on the WonderSwan
Been wanting to add one of these to the collection for a while so this video was full of useful info. Thanks guys.
Bob Cornhole looks strange today.
Metal Jesus Discos
+Fred Almeida The 70s leisure suit is at the dry cleaners.
+MetalJesusRocks Dang and the hat too?
MetalJesusRocks Wonderswan is a 8 bit console made by Bandai in 1995 after Bandai created Sufami Turbo
USB is serial (Universal Serial Bus). The protocol is backwards compatible, so a simple, cheap adapter will do the job fine.
Also, you can develop for it on any machine via cross compiling.
I love you Kelsey
Love learning about games and retro things from you guys.
More Kelsey, please.
I'm a big fan of Pokemon and Digimon and i love the Game Boy Advance and Wonderswan also Digimon Battle Spirit & Digimon Battle Spirit 2 where first released for the Wonderswan Color and later ported to Game Boy Advance
I'm having a poop while watching this 😂💨💩
Bruh
Derek Newton DIGUSTANG!
You never checked back in to tell people how it went!
to anyone wanting to emulate wonderswan games on a newer computer, the Oswan emulator has worked very well for me. I downloaded it to play the English Asian version of Digimon Anode and Cathode Tamers, and it ran like a dream. :3
Kelsey ❤
I really love your buying guide vids! keep it up man
Kelsey is so beautiful, good lord 😘😘
IKR 🤤😭😭😭
Virgins
Awesome video!! I would have to say Gunpei Yokoi is very underated for all the great work he did.
It has about twice the battery life of a dualshock 4 despite it being almost 2 decades older wtf lol..
Finally Kelsey is here!
Your sexy channel-mascot!
I am actually really interested in collecting for the Wonderswan. This video has been helpful, I gained a ton of new info. Unfortunately I'm not in a spot where I can start collecting for a new system, but I guess I'll keep my eyes peeled. Thanks again
yo metal Jesus, is your wife into video games?
+Mitchelton Dhomochevsky Yes, I met Rebecca while working at Sierra On-Line...although she primarily plays western RPGs like Mass Effect, The Witcher 3, Dragon Age, etc...
+MetalJesusRocks that's pretty cool. I only asked because game collecting seems to be a bit more Hardcore than gaming. I've been called a hoarder because I have a whole room devoted to gaming and nerd crap...luckily my wife is also a nerd and doesn't care.
+Mitchelton Dhomochevsky lucky you! mine can't even play tetris!
