It's an interesting experience, getting too look back on these old Digimon games. It surprises me how long it's taken the series to find its footing, and I'm still not fully convinced it's found its identity yet even though it seems to be getting closer to doing so. And honestly I'm kinda surprised the franchise has not only lasted this long, but wasn't just flat out killed earlier through its own insane decisions and general mediocrity. A lot of game mechanics mentioned throughout all these retrospectives are things I can see that have made it into the modern games, and it's fascinating to see the teams gradually start learning from their experiments and implementing the mechanics that worked into more and more games until they finally reach where they are today. And while I get a level of satisfaction from seeing that progress in retrospect, I just wish the series reputation didn't have to get dropped in the toilet to get where it is now.
That's the kind of market I want to capitalize on! Not for my own profit, but because there's a bunch of under-loved games that people are neglecting for all sorts of clickbait garbage, and it's not right!

Boot it up one day, check if it's your thing, if not, let it go.

I don't! I'm actually pretty minimalistic, so if there's no sorta... 'utility' to buying something and owning it, I don't do it. I used to collect things, but got sick of having to deal with how much space they took up and got rid of it all, so when it comes to stuff like vpet digmans, as cool as they are, i always have to talk myself out of buying them.
Wonderswan Ryo games are meh if you play it as an adult but if i got them as a kid, it would've made my day!! I had the misfortune of growing up with Digimon World 4, all i ever wanted was to see Agumon to evolve into Greymon and throw a fireball but Digimon World 4 was like *"NO, fuKk YOOOU!"*
Watching this it's not too surprising that the Wonderswan failed considering these games are part of the 1st party line-up. The games that are meant to be going toe-to-toe with Wario Land II & III, Pokemon Gold/Silver and Links Awakening DX. A lot of these Digimon games look like games you'd expect an unscrupulous 3rd party to crank out, not the platformer holder lol They should have made fewer, but better games to prove the system has games as good as Gameboy. I don't really understand how'd they'd think these games would pose any challenge to the Gameboy, or convince 3rd parties there was any long-term vision for the Wonderswan worth sticking around for instead of just making games on Gameboy.
It honestly seems like a slightly more successful Playdia. A company with so much licence to break out and take large portions of the market through sheer brand recognition, then stumbling and falling flat on your face. That's not to say all the Digimon games are bad, some are pretty decent, but nothing was a killer title. Honestly, that sums up most the series at this point.
Many of this games have good basis, but it seems that they tried to reinvent the wheel instead of improving the wheel they already have, the only exception being the Ryo series, given that they did try to improve but it was only baby steps starting from a boring game.
Even with that fourth Ryo game, they tried to reinvent it again and it *almost* worked, but had a few major issues. A combination of all these would make an amazing game, it's just a shame it seemed to fail at every opportunity. Out of 10+ games, having 5 or so that're good enough to play for funsies but aren't brilliant is still a pretty decent hit-rate, far better than Digimon games on most other consoles tbh.
Well with the way the games are and how bad you don't care about the story within (despite the game not too great), I guess there's a reason why Bandai never wanted Wonderswan in the US in the first place
Hey since you're such an Anime Fan, ever thought about reviewing Naruto Games? The ones I had in mind would ne the Chronicle series... I loved those, especially the sequel 😂

why the fuck didnt they ever just make a pokemon game clone. With random encounters where you captured other digimon (not digimon world 3 that was terrible and slow)
Hey, well I appreciate it regardless. That said, you should absolutely focus on your goals and do your best to achieve them! The virtual tamagotchi is *okay* and the one where you have the three fellers who digivolve based on their environment is neat but yeah, it seems if you're not down for the narrative of those 4 games that connect to the anime plot, there's not a lot here.
funny enought digimon franchihse tryes TOO hard to be completely connected between products, so the wonderswan game ACTUALLY gives backstory for the anime and explains some small plotholes of the anime. It still sucks, don´t get me wrong, but why digimon has an interconected multiple dimensions is beyond my imagination
yeah that was a bit strange to discover, feels like when people retroactively fit games to be a canonical 'series' instead of just letting things be separate... Though I guess they went in with the intent to connect them, it still sucks, I say we boycott wonderswan

im just now finding out apparently cyber sleuth is actually part of a different digimon spinoff series
despite having nothing to do with the previous games
looks cool for a wonderswan game
I love that u still use dw2 soundtrack...say whatever u want about the game but the soundtrack is fire
Even DW4 has a decent soundtrakc hey
The Card game is translated, actually
fan translators got on the card game?

Losing it at your Nanimon named “Moviebob”
I totally forgot I did that, I didn't even catch it in the edit.
I love older consoles and their adapters and attackments so much, guess I've got to buy a WonderSwan now haha
noisulcnoc eht yllaicepse psac oediv taerg yllaer
The WonderSwan had weird attachments in spades, my friend. The '90s was a hell of a drug.
@@Caspicum I'm trying to track this stuff down right now, already ordered a WonderSwan that'll hopefully be here soon hahaha
Hey casp. Just re watching this for the fourth or fifth time. Just wondering- do you have any Digimon vpets? If so, which ones?
@@Caspicum I get that. I have way too many 🤣 I don't collect a lot of stuff but the plastic crack has got a hold on me.
great video really well done
Nice ^^
ouch. that ending
hot damn, i forgot how savage i can be
Wonderswan Ryo games are meh if you play it as an adult but if i got them as a kid, it would've made my day!! I had the misfortune of growing up with Digimon World 4, all i ever wanted was to see Agumon to evolve into Greymon and throw a fireball but Digimon World 4 was like *"NO, fuKk YOOOU!"*
The kid is Ryo
From 02 and Tamers
Why can't I sub more than once..So underrated love the content lol.
It's worth a shot, what's the worst that could happen? Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it!
@@Caspicum I clicked subscribe again it unsubbed me the heathens!
Oooo the Zeedmillenniummon game at the end. The most powerful of all evil digimon. Wish he was in the anime
Go watch the reboot. You'll be happy you did
Sneedmillenniummon?
Adventure 2020 felt kinda bloated. There's like 5 million main villains.
Watching this it's not too surprising that the Wonderswan failed considering these games are part of the 1st party line-up. The games that are meant to be going toe-to-toe with Wario Land II & III, Pokemon Gold/Silver and Links Awakening DX. A lot of these Digimon games look like games you'd expect an unscrupulous 3rd party to crank out, not the platformer holder lol
They should have made fewer, but better games to prove the system has games as good as Gameboy.
You could almost think it was LJN who made these digimon games.
Hey since you're such an Anime Fan, ever thought about reviewing Naruto Games? The ones I had in mind would ne the Chronicle series... I loved those, especially the sequel 😂
Man, that takes me back. I played the fuck out of Chronicles and Ultimate NInja back in the day. I probably wouldn't do videos on those games, but I do have plans for some Naruto RPGs soon!
Hard times in rule 34, hard times.
lmao nanimon does look like moviebob
Did Izzy just say your a “biggy boi”
Damn right. My guy's name was biggu boi

I had fun with both Battle Spirt games on GBA.
Yeah, they're just throwaway games you play for an hour or so. There's not a lot to them, they do their job.
@@Caspicum I am not good at regular fighting games.
I mostly prefer Smash Bros.
Digimon Battle Spirit games felt similar. When I played them no portable Smash Bros was available.
Good video. 🤔
You should play that bootleg Digimon game, I think it's called Digimon ruby
Oh! Digimon Rury?
@@Caspicum yeah that one! "Alas, why become like this?"
The second game looks epileptic inducing
Yeah, in hindsight I should've slapped a warning on that one. I'll see if I can do it through RUclips...
Is it me or it has same vibes with Survive? Gameplay wise
I want a video on figthing fodoons.
Even if I have no interest in the wonderswan. I have to watch it just for casp and his dry ass humour.
ty ty ty
I will be more dry in the future, but the rainy seasons are upon us.
I still to this day randomly think about him saying "Oregon-al character, doughnut steal" in his Re:Digitize review, and laugh about it.
Crazy how these couldve easily been GBA games
2 even are ported to GBA
So the Wonder Swan doesn't have much wonder after all.
They should've called it MediocreSwan

@@Caspicum Still gotta get your hands on Legend of Legaia bro!
Nigga just gimme a holla I have three Wonderswans
Also, Ryo is not pronounced as Ryu.
>flip the screen's rotation
Also know as holding the system vertically.
why the fuck didnt they ever just make a pokemon game clone. With random encounters where you captured other digimon (not digimon world 3 that was terrible and slow)
Reminds me a ton of the "Pokémon Mini" that came out. Most of it's games sucked too.
I've never even heard of that, but I want to know more. Teach me, Terry-san.
What I doing with my life, I should be producing and here I am watching 18 minutes of bad digimon games I'll never play...
Hey, well I appreciate it regardless. That said, you should absolutely focus on your goals and do your best to achieve them! It's important to take breaks, but don't be slipping or you'll lose motivation and never finish. Stay focused and well-paced and you'll do it with ease. Get some sunlight and some exercise, and there's no way you'll fail.
@@Caspicum thank you for the advice, but I've been watching your videos since the first comment so the day is already over and I did nothing. At least I had fun HAHAHAHA
Well here in Britain tea Is how we solve problems
be careful, you might just get MILKED
oh wait hang on
it's truely a bummer, none of the digimon games were actually good.
Though I guess they went in with the intent to connect them, it still sucks, I say we boycott wonderswan
lets cancel the wonderswan
I actually really like it when a franchise is connected like that through so many timelines and shit lol
@@Klonoahedgehog i like it when every part stand on theyr own. I can't say i like every thing of digimon individually. This wonderswan is a great example in my opnion, of a good concept and bad execution
