- The camera gear I use for Bird and wildlife photography continues to grow. I have accumulated quite a lot of gear over the last year. However, I use nearly all of it.
Bird photography gear is a lot. But add in Video and sound equipment...I think this might be too much!
Hunt's Photography is my go to shop for camera equipment.
If you are interested in any of the equipment I use, check out this link to Hunt's Photo and video.

No gear was supplied to me for this video.
All Aerial Photography and video was captured by me. I am a Part 107 UAV Pilot. Feel free to email with inquiries.
Wow!!! "You've come a long way baby".
One step closer to crazy town. 🤣
Friday mornings one of my favorite days of the week.
😃
I'm excited to hear/see what you have planned for Alaska. Those are my old stomping grounds.
We are excited to head out on our trip. We will be in Juneau. Mostly whale and eagle watching. We do have a hope that we will see some bears over at Hoonah. Fingers crossed. 😃
@@BayouJosh That will be a ton of fun! I'm more familiar with the surrounding Anchorage area. Never actually been to Juneau, so I'll really look forward to your video from that particular trip!
To dear Josh's mom; I loved this video, it is my geek out sugar coffee happy moment before paper work ... thank you, have a blessed day.
Glad you enjoyed it. 😅
Love, love, love! ...the drone shots. Oh yes, can't wait to see what's next! Bring it, I'll be here watching God willing! Don't forget the drone footage.
🙂 there will always be drone footage. ❤️
You are my new favorite bird photographer. Hands down the best video I have watched in my search. The video Josh proposes at the end of this one is even better! One new sub!
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate that!
Gear is fun , so a great and fun video :) Have a nice weekend Josh and photograph a lot.
Cheers Ronny
Thank you Ronny, you too brother.
Great video, Josh. The sound and mic information was interesting. Hope you can elaborate more in future videos.
I was afraid that was going to bore everyone to death. I appreciate it Victor.
@@BayouJosh Not bored at all... I've come back to watch that section 3 or 4 times now, and I've been flipping through your videos to try to get really good look at how you're capturing such great sound of birds in your video clips. And tips and tricks you can share would be greatly appreciated as the sound thing is still an issue in my videos and yours sound pretty darn amazing! Thanks!
I like the gear talk - and photos and videos. Hope to see you around the area in 2022.
It’s gonna be a great year. Thank you my friend
Hi Josh and Katie, it's usually around now that the Snow Geese show up in Parma. Not sure if they're over there yet, but a head's up. They are usually on the Old Fort Boise side.
Thanks for the heads up. we were out photographing them in Bruneau last weekend.
Awesome Josh, an exciting year ahead. Thanks for sharing your set up
Definitely an exciting year.
I own a Sony RX 100VII, but I enjoy knowing what other photographers use-gear talk is fun.
It sure is fun.
Another great video, Josh. I enjoy the crisp, concise delivery and how you stated this is "what works for your workflow". It's incredible the amount of stuff that we accumulate to put ourselves out there. I, too, like photographing birds on my birding trips to other countries. It helps me to remember the trip, the places, the number of species as the totals keep going up. I'll probably never have a RUclips channel because I wouldn't feel as comfortable in front of the camera. You have a great, honest, natural presentation, so keep up the great work.
I sure appreciate you saying that Mr. Horner. 😀
I feel the same way about being uncomfortable in front of the camera. It’s been a process. My issue is being very critical of myself- how I look, how I sound, etc. I’m trying to let that go and just stop worrying about it. Easier said than done! 😊
Hello Josh, a lot gear for bird photography 😉. Thank you so much for the explanation and the video. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Too much maybe. 😀
Great vid! Please don’t delete your old videos. All useful info.
Thanks for the audio info. Really useful.
You got it! they will always be there. thank you.
Great video. Hope you get your 400 TC soon, before you hit the road on those trips. The 500 PF will still have a place in your bag but that 400 will be amazing.
Thank you so much Michael. I am patiently waiting. It’s tough to wait though.
Thanks again for your gear video. Like your stuff, now I have real gear envy...
😀 no need for that Leo. Always appreciate it brother.
It sounds like you are set and we are in for a great year of content from you. Looking forward to seeing what you and Katie discover and share with us.
Thank you Thomas. It is an exciting year.
We saw the cutest gray squirrel I have ever seen this past weekend. I hope you'll watch our next video. Hopefully Josh will add plenty of squirrel footage.
another great video Thanks Josh !
Thank you Anthony.
We love you Josh.. from India all the way.. your passion is adorable
thank you my friend.
Thanks Josh for answering my questions from last week on your vlog gear. I struggle with sound and need to upgrade my mics. I was hoping to see a gear list in the description. 😉 I’ll go back and watch again and take some notes. Thanks again!
Hey Michael, there’s a link to a sheet at hunts photo and video. They have a list of all of my gear. But if you want to save some time it’s the rode video mic NTG.
Thanks Josh, I’ll check it out. I’m a Hunts repeat customer too, they are great!
I was scoping your last video for what rode mic you were using. Good timing
Oh nice! That ntg video mic is so much better than the entry level rode mics. and The XLR mic ran through a device that adds phantom power is even better.
Hi Josh! Thank you for sharing the info on what gear you use. I primarily shoot stills but now that I have the Z9 on order I plan to start making videos when I finally get it. I also plan on getting a drone so I will do what you suggested and get an operator’s license. Take care and I’ll be looking forward to more of your amazing videos!
Video is fun Patricia. I think you’ll enjoy it.
Maaaaannn, i want that 105 macro so badly.
Probably next year
Such a excellent lens
Super gear and yes we are many with the "Gone too far" virus :) :) :)
It does seem like a virus right? 🙂
@@BayouJosh Haha yes for sure 😱
Eye opening video, thanks. I never would have guessed you had to tote that much gear into the field. When are you getting your trained burro to to help out. Really though I appreciate what you do even more. Thanks as ever, a fan.
Thank you Robert. Truth is 90% of it stays in the truck until I need it. But man when I need it… It’s nice to have it.
Funny you should mention a burro. I joke that he needs a pack mule often. And I’ve said that I felt like a pack mule a few times! LoL he rarely asks me to carry anything anymore. I’m a brat.
@@buttonlover86 Had a funny thought after watching the videos with you in them. You will not have time to carry his gear it looks like you may be prepping to start your own channel. Would love to see what your videos would be like.
Excellent video Josh. I'm also surprised how little I've used my DJI gimbal. Looking forward to more of your videos this year.
Thanks Rob. Just takes too much time to set up.
Always informative and professional videos. Will look forward to your future trips. One question, I have just bought the pf500mm for my Z6ii. When I gave the VR on and an somewhere quiet I can here it working even when I’m not activating the focus (back button). It is very quiet so out the the field don’t notice it. I tried it on my D500 and it only activated when I focus. That’s how my 200-500mm VR works on the Z6ii. What is your experience? By the way love the pf500mm on my Z6ii.
Same experience. No idea why it does that
@@BayouJosh thanks, that’s reassuring.
You deliver as usual great video
I appreciate that!
"do i go a little crazy sometimes?" yup, i can relate to that xD
But i gotta say something i've recently noticed: photography gear is not an expence, especially if you purchase 2nd hand. Because all the gear in which you invest, you can sell it later and get a full refund if you play well the game. It's awesome, now i can spend even more money ;)
That is a great point.
Don't give up on the gear talk, but you've left us regular Joe's in the dust.
Josh,
Great video! Can you do a video on your tripod and how you set up with your tripod on location? Do you use a gimbal head on your tripod? Thanks
John
I really need to do that. thanks for the idea. 🙂
I love gear and I love Friday for mr Bayou. Going to shoot the A1 and the Gfx tomorrow. Mainly because the A1 is lighter than the Z9 and 70-200 with an atomos strapped on it.
that sony sure is lighter. 😀
@@BayouJosh still dont know if the image quality is better on the z9 or A1 (cant find it anywhere). But only one way to find out and thats using it i guess
I'd give the exact same answer to the "if-you-could-only-have-one-lens" question! The 105 Z macro lens is incredible - I got one recently and it has quickly become the Lena I use the most.
It’s fantastic right?
Nice - sounds like a fun year ahead. Deeply envious of your Z9, can't even get a sniff of one here in the UK 😒 Enjoy.
thanks Ian. Yeah, Nikon Supply chain is struggling.
@@BayouJosh I'm really enjoying the Z6 (Thanks to you!) but the focus system on the Z9 seems superior & the ability to crop in a bit further always helps, especially for small birds......but sadly not holding my breath until late summer/autumn. Really enjoying your channel, thanks so much for all the effort made 👍
Good stuff...now that you're mostly at F5.6 do you use any denoise sw? I personally find it indispensable since I'm mostly at F7.1.
I do all editing in lightroom. I select subject masking, invert the image and denoise the background. I use brush features in LR to touch up the subject. 😀
HI Josh. I just purchased the Z6-II to take on a 6-8 week trip out west in May. I want to be able to so some video and that’s why I went with the Z6-II. My problem is I haven’t been able to find much in the way of tutorial for video for a complete beginner. Any suggestions? Keep up the great work. You have become one of my fav RUclipsr! I so look forward to the announcement of a new video that goes live!
I really should do a video about that. That’s a fantastic buy. You’re gonna love it.
JOSH-- I just ordered the Nikon 100--400 4.5-5.6 lense and will be using it on my Z6II. What do you think about this lense on Z6II? Thanks JOSH! Randy Bocksnick(Montana)
Sounds like a great lens Randy. I know every Z mount lens I’ve purchased thus far is fantastic.
Josh you are becoming more and more polished yet still so original. As always I love your videos and an apology to mom for allowing you to share your great experience with us. Best of luck to Katie and yourself on a wonderful year of birding.
Thank you so much Chuck. I sure do appreciate it.
Great to know your gear. It was very interesting listening your honest opinion. What do you think of peakdesign bags? Is F-stopper better. Inown the same gear as you do ..cheers from Oman.
never used peak design bags. However, I am not sure they have one that competes with the size of those big F-stop bags.
Very informative. You didn't just talk about the features and specs of the gear, but how and why you chose it. Sounds like you have a great year planned.
It is going to be a great here.
Josh, I have been shooting the Nikon 200-500mm for several years and I have been seriously considering the 500pf..How much sharper would you say the PF is over the 200-500mm? And is AF speed noticeably faster? I know sharpness isn't everything but to me it is very important!! Another good video, nice to see your gear run down! I have been hearing great things about the Viltrox lenses, glad to hear your input on them..I agree about the gimbals, I handhold or use a monopod exclusively
Noticeably sharper and faster. 😀
@@BayouJosh thanks!!
Hey Josh. Liked the gear talk, but what do you use and/or recommend for tripod and head ?
That’s the five minutes of video I edited out. 😁 You can click on that price sheet in the description. It has a list of all the tripods and videoheads. There are several.
Great video like always Josh, Can you do a video on how you setting the videoMic NTG with Z9.
I own the z9 and 500pf.....thank and advance.
I keep thinking I need to do a sound video. it is tougher than making pictures.
@@BayouJosh I will be pending, I take pictures and I want to venture with video .... and thanks in advance Josh
FWIW I'd watch a video or a series of videos nerding out on wildlife audio. I feel I've outgrown the entry level options and want to level up my audio also.
I've gone down the sound rabbit hole. the funny thing is, it got worse before it got better. buying the right equipment was easy, learning to use it was next level stuff. Not as easy as I had hoped. Complicated.
I got a viltrox 85mm last year for my z6ii. Recent firmware update made it top tierm highly recommend
They make great products
@@BayouJosh yeah, I was pleasantly surprised, picked it up for an engagement shoot my friend asked for.
I'd have to say the only drawback I've found it the 3' minimum focus distance. But, that's the only thing
Great video Josh tho I'd love to see a new updated gear video now you're using Sony. It would be nice to see what you're using now and how much things have changed gear wise now your using Sony 😊
Thanks for sharing that insight into your tool bag and yes I had my coffee ready!
I'll echo the praise for the 105mm Z macro. Insanely sharp, very light, great for macro, can double as a portrait lens, and a great all around option.
Curious to know what heads you have on your tripods. I've been experimenting but haven't found something I feel really solid using. In fact a new one is being delivered today. Anything you can share there?
Thanks again Josh and keep rolling.
Thanks Chris. I barely pay attention to my heads. I have a 7 year old Vanguard head and the benro s6 video head for the video camera. I have the wimberly gimbal for the big lenses.
Appreciate you sharing your choices Josh. I'd really like to have that Z 105, but the Z9 has to come first (maybe by Aug. Sept.). I have the f-mount 105 macro - so the Z 105 can wait til next year (if I'm still around).
So much good equipment out there!
The 105 is sweet!! I have the 50 micro as well, but haven't used it.
I'm one of those guys that loves talking about gear. I am vocal about my favorite pieces and gear I'm excited about. Great video! I recently picked up a Zoom H4n and two Rode Go mic 2's. Looking forward to getting better sound. I took video of some bull moose locking paddles at Moose, WY last Oct. and I couldn't capture the sound of the antlers clanking together. I'm heading to Teton park for 12 days next month. Super stoked to use some of my new gear!
Awesome! Yeah, that gear can make or break a moment!
We need to get to the Tetons asap! I hear the bears might be out. Of course, they’ll go right back into their dens as soon as we show up! LoL
@@buttonlover86 There will be a particular set of bears in a certain part of the park I'd love to see before they are cut loose by the momma bear. I haven't heard of any bear sightings yet, but I expect to in the next two weeks or so. Very exciting!
@@Tipton_Wildlife I hope Josh had a way to call you so we can be alerted. 😊😊 but if you’d rather keep your secrets, I totally understand that too. Bears can draw quite a crowd very fast
Not really a secret if you know the park ;) I just do what most of the photographers do, circle the park and look for other photographers lol.
Let me know when you're going to Alaska, Josh. I will be teleporting through my screen to join you guys. :)
As always, great video friend.
Sounds great! thanks Kevin!
Great video Josh,, you a gear head for sure. Lol. Question: Have you ever used camera flash for wildlife? Hummingbirds. Keep these vlogs coming
Thanks brother. Not a big fan of flash for wildlife
Thank you so much.
Thank you for watching
I really recommend the GFX100S for macro and landscapes.
Yeah! I love down the camera. I’ve heard nothing but great things about that camera.
So did you use the night settings (I know not the correct name) on the Z9 to get kangaroo rats. I live near Tucson near a wildlife sanctuary. I would enjoy a geeky Z9 video talking about the capture of some night time photos. The gear used and settings tastefully burried into the normal great story line.
MMMM??? Night settings. I need to geek out on that for a bit. I did not know such a thing existed. I will own a camera for 5 years and only know about a quarter of it's features. 😂
Hey Josh, great video. I agree about having good audio. I to have a H6 and have been trying to improve my audio but I find there is so much noise pollution from cars, planes and people. I also find having to much gear is a pain in the ass! I will be curious how you pack your and Katie's gear for trips in the new truck. . I always look forward to your videos! Greg
Yeah Greg. You are really hitting on something that has been driving me nuts. Noise pollution is so frustrating. I should have highlighted the truck and SUV a little more. because most of my equipment just gets thrown in to the backseat. You know how it is.
Great tips and advice Josh - another interesting video! >>>> ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!! Sound is SO SO SO Important in a video, I cannot stand watching a video (especially conferences) where you struggle hearing what they're saying (or what's worse you get people near the in-camera rubbish microphone chatting on top of the speakers!). Video is IMAGE + AUDIO please, if you're a creator of content never ever forget this!!
So true! Thank you Enrico.
Great video!
Thanks for sharing😊
Thanks for watching
Sounds like I’ll probably run in to you at some point this year! Going to a lot of the same places.
Lotta good stuff to see you out there.
@@BayouJosh Absolutely! Last year I hit Boise, Juneau, Yellowstone, and Yosemite. Was at The Tetons in January of this year and planing to go again in the Spring. This time hitting both Jackson and Yellowstone in one trip.
Bayou Josh, I just found your channel. WOW is all I can say. You have much the same philosophy of photography that I do. I’d love to get your advice. I’m in the process of upgrading my gear. I have a very old Nikon D5000 with a Tamron 16-300mm lens. Neither one of these works for me anymore. They are not capable of capturing the quality of images that I want. They can get good images but not what I would call great images. I have been struggling to determine which mirrorless (or DSLR) Nikon to upgrade to (yes I want to stick with Nikon). I’m leaning heavily toward a Nikon z7ii and looking at the Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 or the Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3. Quality of image, Portability and Budget are the biggest factors for me, with budget being the breaking point. This particular combo would be at my high end budget wise. I’m going to be doing quite a bit of travel (Alaska, switzerland, italy, etc.) over the next year or two and my focus is primarily wildlife and landscapes. Do you feel what I am looking at would be a good fit for what I’m wanting to do or do you have another suggestion.
In cycling there’s a formula, expressed two ways, to determine how many bicycles you should own: "N+1", where N = the number of bikes you currently own or "S minus 1” where S = the number of bikes owned that would cause your spouse to leave you. I expect there’s a direct corollary with camera bodies and lenses too 😆. At the risk of a full geek-out and with apologies to "Mama Bayou", I would welcome more future comments on the mic and sound logistics. So true about the sound quality. For me content still rules the day but paired with good production qualities just makes it so much more enjoyable. Thanks Josh.
that formula is certainly applicable to this hobby 😆. I could geek out about sound. especially considering the learning curve. I knew nothing about it 6 months ago now I'm studying the difference between xy stereo, AB format, and ORTF. Yeah, Like I said. I really geek out on this stuff. thanks as always Marcus.
@@BayouJosh It's exactly that learning curve info I'd be interested in. Hopefully others too. Thx.
Congrats on 13K!
Thank you!!
I have watched videos by yourself, Mark Smith and the Steve's, Mattheis and Perry, and wondered how do they cover themselves and still get great results. And now I know...and I know that juggling all that stuff in the field would drive me crazy. You and the other wildlife RUclipsrs deserve a lot of credit. Your comments on gear make me suspect that Renaissance painters probably hung out with each other and talked at length about which paint brushes and canvas to use and how to best mix certain colors. GAS has probably been a thing since cave art. Even though I hate shooting video, I enjoyed yours as always.
Yeah it’s pretty cumbersome at times but I enjoy it. 😀
Hey brotha thanks for connecting on IG with me and checking out my photos….
Indeed. 😁
Haha I use the DJI RS2 all the time for client work, literally an amazing gimbal compared to the previous years of gimbals I had used... but 100% you're right that for Wildlife Photography RUclips I virtually never use it either. Too bulky to carry in those scenarios and too much setup time often. Only on my short films I wind up using it.
Those gimbals kick my butt.
Yes, everyone loves gear :) I considered the Nikkor 20mm f1.8 S, but instead opted for the Nikkor 14-24mm f2.8 S (I also have the 14-30); as a old large format photographer I have an affinity for prime lenses (I love the Nikkor 85mm f1.8, but hardly ever use it). I only own Nikkor Z mount lenses., and shoot on a first generation Nikon Z 7. Several months ago, I started using the Fuji GFX100S, which is a monster camera - very heavy - but the lenses are simply wonderful. Who knows where I'll go next... LOL.
Always fun to have options right?
@@BayouJosh Yes, I mostly do Landscape and Travel, hence the variety of gear. I am still considering the Nikkor 20mm 1.8; I've got a church interior that I want to photograph in Prague.
Hi Josh I really enjoy your videos. You mentioned you don’t use the fstop bag for the z9 and 500pf. What bag do you use for those?
Thank you Karen. I use a rapid strap over the shoulder and the back seat of my truck. I'll have to figure something out for travel. I have a second bag coming for the overhead storage on the planes.
@@BayouJosh which bag? I am struggling looking at shimoda explorer v2. Thanks for the info
Best video so far.
Thank you Brandon
Did you notice noiser video on the Z9 than Z6/2? At high iso
I haven't done much of a comparison. I don't look too close honestly. They both produce beautiful files.
@@BayouJosh other RUclipsr said that, considering one Z9 or z62 for video
you need to create an amazon affiliate page & link those products and make a few pennies here & there off purchases that will help viewers & your channel
I typically have them on there but this week it’s a price sheet from hunts photo and video.
@@BayouJosh glad to hear, keep up the great work
Gear Head Gang drop likes, I'm curious how many are we?! 🤓
There’s a bunch of us out there but strangely this is the least amount of views I’ve gotten on a video and two months. 😄
It's great you have so many upcoming trips lined up this year I know you and Katie will come home to share some great videos with the rest of us. I would luv to get myself out there for a trip but have spent way too much this year on gear and just ordered a new computer to boot, maybe next year. It has been real slow subject wise in SC the last 3-4 weeks, between temperature shifts to the nesting season approaching bird sightings have been few and far between. Today however a non documented event occurred that blew away myself and two friends walking in the woods, we spotted a Male Cardinal on the ground minding its own business and literally in the time it would take you to blink your eyes 3 times what appeared to be a Red Tailed Hawk came out of nowhere grabbed the cardinal and flew off deep in the woods with the poor cardinal vocalizing as loud as possible knowing it was someones lunch. We were only 15' away I would guess and just stood their with out mouths open and amazed by what we saw, never had a chance to get a shot. Take care - Jeff
Holy smokes Jeff, that’s one hell of an experience.
Jeff, I feel so sorry for that Cardinal! I would not have been able to get a picture either. That sounds like a traumatic experience.
By the way f stop has a new tilopa bag out. It’s being reviewed currently by all major you tubers. They claim to be more comfortable than the old one and it really looks impressive although they are overpriced as hell!
I saw that.
@@BayouJosh will you be getting one? I really want one but I’d prefer to invest my money in lenses instead of bags.
Hey Josh I have the Nikon d3500 with 50ml 300ml should I all so get the 600ml for good range and loving your videos
its hard to say my friend. I shot exclusively with a D7200 and 300mm f/4 for many years. It taught me to get closer to the subject and be patient. the 600 is a fantastic lens but it comes at a cost.
Josh, I am surprised to a "content with" a 500 /5.6 for small bird photography. I seems to me you need to do a whole lot of cropping to get close enough.
it is not bad at all. I manage to get close enough. I have that 400 2.8 TC on the way also.
I know it all depends on what your doing with the equipment but to be honest I see very little difference in the quality of your videos and those taken with the newer Gopros. This has nothing to do with the content, strictly the final result. I don't believe the average viewer could tell the difference between which gear filmed a video. Again the method of viewing contributis to the viewer experience. I enjoy your videos and the stories you provide with them. Please keep up the good work.
I often wonder if folks can tell. the GoPros certainly can't get the wildlife footage like the big lenses. (unless you hide them somewhere...so yeah, I guess you are right)
Just curious Josh, do you have a 9-5 job, or maybe you have retired early?
I do. that is the only way I can pay for this silly gear. been at my career now for 20+ years and the kids are all grown so Katie and I are in a new season of life. It's been fun. 🙂
@@BayouJosh Good for you, having the motivation to get out and be creative and passionate about your hobby while you're still working daily.
ntg5
Yep.
I'm not sure why you're taking pictures of birds...they aren't real!
Honestly have me drooling over some gear right now.
😄 Gear is fun!
Birds are our favorite subjects. We were birders long before grabbing cameras. The birds inspired us to take photos. They’re like pretty little flying works of art. 😊🦉🌈🪶🦋🦅❤️🦆
You are sure....the Z9 for the next 10years? It`s going to be hard! lol
One part is missing....400/2.8 TC.
You are right. who am I kidding? and Yes. the 400 is next.
He should be set for life at this point.
It was good to see you again this week, not my favorite from you. I know these type of videos might get a lot of views for you but everyone else are doing these. If people are watching your videos most would be able to tell you what you are shooting with. This is just my two cents so its just not my cup of tea. Can't wait to see some of the other videos from the places you are going to this year and years to come.
I appreciate it my friend. Great point. These videos are definitely not for everyone. As a matter of fact I don’t even enjoy them. I make commitments to certain people and got to fulfill my commitments. 👍🏻
Selamat malam.video anda sangat bagus seandanya bisa seperti anda .naik naik dan naik .mf🙏❤️👍
I am not interested in gear just your iso and shutter speed
