  • Which is better when it comes to making 3D prints shiny and smooth? The new comer to the scene, Polysmooth, or the old reliable ABS?

    Nice video, and yes, we developed PolySmooth as an safer/easier alternative to ABS/Acetone. They both have pros and cons which you highlighted really well.

      Would acetone work in the polysmother ?

    • @chemicalartist3d289
      @chemicalartist3d289 2 месяца назад +1

      @@landynmiller6750 no. While some parts of it seem to be made out of some either carbon or glasfiber reinforced material the vapormodule would simply disolve or crack. Something that would have worked is the questionable kickstarter project Polysmoother. It was an allmetal sonic cleaner basicly. Unfortunaly it looks like they either oversetimated the work like many kickstarter projects or were outright a scam.

    I print almost exclusively in ABS, but have only made half hearted attempts at acetone smoothing. You've inspired me to build a proper setup for it!

    I’ve been printing for like… 12 years now? And have only just recently started using ABS and ASA. Mainly because I’ve only recently had a printer with an enclosure.
    I’ve been so pleasantly surprised with it! On my X1C it prints like a dream!
    I really need to grab some acetone and finally try out vapor smoothing.

    I would have liked a close-up comparison. I'm watching on a phone and I really can't see any details at all. I think you put a close-up in the thumbnail but those go away as soon as the video starts. Please include close-ups within the videos in the future. Happy printing!

      I would have loved to get you one. Technical problems caused me to lose that footage, but I didn't discover it until I finished smoothing the rest of the batch.

    Very useful. FYI you can get PVB filament (what polysmooth is) at prices similar to PLA, from other suppliers..

    When it comes to ABS I've had some good luck with small things but not big things. It is indeed a tricky plastic to print with. The smoothing definitely enhances the look.

    That scares me. I have yet to print in ABS.

      Well, that's what "safety first" is all about. Look at the risks, decide if it's worth it, and if it's not, don't. Polysmooth is still a good option.

    Please do not dump the acetone vapors on the ground. While i agree it should be harmless in that low concentration laminated flooring, electronics like extension cables or powerstrips can get damaged even by these little amounts.
    Also people are careless and forgot their pets where on the floor :( .

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for the reminder. Most of my stuff is on wheels, and I don't have any pets.
      How would you suggest those vapors be dissipated?

    • @chemicalartist3d289
      @chemicalartist3d289 2 месяца назад +1

      I always went outside if i had something to vapor smooth (after accidentaly staining a piece of flooring by escaping vapors) and let the pot sit there. Slight breeze and it nearly disappeared as quick as it smoothed the print.
      May i ask if you looked into Dichlormethane as option to vaporsmooth non Polysmooth PLA? I would understand if you say its too dangerous because not wearing at least a halfmask with combination filters even for a short duration is quite unhealthy.

      @@chemicalartist3d289 is less about the health concerns and more about (1) difficulty to acquire, (2) cost and (3) amount needed to be effective. Hard to beat stuff you can buy at a local store for nicked nickels per application like IPA or acetone.

      @@3dpprofessor 1) Oh. I knew its in the fade out phase for industrial use in the USA but not that its limited in sale. 2) had to look it up and wow. The prices over the pond are a robbery. I payed 6,5$ for 3.4 US fl oz here. 3) thats surprising me. For my test with an old Benchy i just used 0.0101 US fl oz and it more or less melted the Benchy.
      I hope to get the all clear for wearing gasmasks/rebreather from my doctor next week again. If you are interested i can make some before and after images because the results are simply stunning.

    PLA is the BudLight of filament. its just not as good as ABS.

    • @3dpprofessor

      Interesting take. I might say PLA is the McDonalds of filament. Cheap, goes down easy, inoffensive, but hardly interesting, most of the time.
