Riven never felt like a game, more like experiencing a unique culture where everything intrigues your emotions. You don't play Riven, you go there.
Exactly what I did, all those long years ago. Even after finally, finally understanding all the puzzles and finishing Riven, I would regularly go back there and just watch the scenery, as stupid as that may sound.
Everything, just everything, the visuals and the phenomenal music, was, and still is sooo relaxing.
I can’t tell you how happy I am they kept the original music. I can’t imagine Riven with any other totally different music. It probably wouldn’t work for me.
As for the new visuals, they’re just stunning. Just stunning.
Again, my brain can't tell the difference between this and the original; mot even registering that it's in 3D instead of fixed camera angles. You guys are doing such a great job and I'm so looking forward to it!
My favorite part of this game was entering this temple and briefly seeing Ghen's face being broadcasted in that cage while he is observing you. That spooked me as a kid, and still does actually. Now I can't wait to be spooked again, in 4K.
GASP! SPOILERS!! (jk) I always wanted to figure out how to trigger that scene multiple times.
@@alexwilkinsgames If they go ahead and use 3d instead of the actual actor, not a lot of spooking will be had.
@@Planetdune They're using a model on-par with Metahuman for this one, so Gehn will look significantly better than Sirrus Achenar or Atrus in Myst 2020

@@alexwilkinsgames Been playing it for my first time ever, it seems to trigger each time you open the Temple doors from the outside? I've seen it twice now, at least.
My Dad bought the 5 disk CD ROM box set in 1998. I still have it as a keep sake. My favorite memories were playing it with him. Since the announcement came out for the reboot, I have been sending him all the recent videos, and he is just as excited as I am for it. It really is a full circle moment playing a point and click game at 6 years old to being 32 and playing that same game in virtual reality. We have come so far and I'm so happy I'm here to see it.

I hardly remember playing the original games. It's almost 30 years ago.
Woaw this is impressive the level of detail, and the memories this brings back.
This is one of the first place you visit when you arrive in Riven.
We are all here waiting to see Gehn's face appear on the imager and how he will look and hopefully realistic, this will bring so much to the world.

I'll never forget the feeling of playing this for the first time. I was way too young to get much farther than this room, and it felt so unforgiving and sinister
I finished Myst and Riven back in the old days, but it's so long ago that I only remember a few parts vaguely and there's mostly the feeling of wonder left. Can't wait to play it again in actual 3D. Did they make a Myst remake as well?

And Myst have so many remasters as of late I don’t know which version is the best😂. But the latest was Myst (2021). You can even play that on iOS if you have one
I know I'm being greedy, but this really makes me want to see the Gallery of D'ni again. I used to just leave my avatar there for hours listening to the song.
Please release a soundtrack on cd or vinyl
This is my favorite game of all time. I have been dreaming of a remaster like this for so many years, and I can't believe it's finally happening! I had never played a game before Riven so immersive or one that made me feel so transported to another living, breathing world. And I suspect I never will again. It's such a special work of art. Preserving it for the future like this with updated graphics and modernized gameplay is honestly a form of important cultural preservation. I can't wait to experience this amazing world all over again, for the first time.
You guys are breathing new life into a masterpiece. Feel proud.
Honestly, I never expected this to happen either. Or, I don’t know whether you did, but I didn’t.
The level of detail in the wireframes alone made me think they would never want to touch this again, because it would mean SO much work, that it would be forbidding from a cost-perspective alone.
Obviously, science and computer technology with it, has now progressed to a point, that made it possible for them to go ahead and just do it.
I’m so happy. So happy.
To me Riven is the pinnacle of gaming, for so many reasons. The intro. The level of detail in the pictures. The level of detail in the world. The music. The background story. The complexity of the puzzles. The beauty of the puzzles. Just everything.
I can understand there are people that don’t like this kind of game, but to me there’s nothing that outperforms this. Almost nothing, I have to say.
I can't wait to see the whole game, especially the Moiety village!
The nostalgia hits so hard. Myst and Riven are why I've gotten into classic macs. Always had PC in my home growing up but when I would visit a bud's house in mid 90s Provo, UT I was intoduluced to Mac amd Myst. Myst was a super adventure to me back then on what must have been an old Performa all in one variant. Even using the Mac for things other than Myst or Riven was still steeped in mystique as I associated the machine with Cyan games. Very cool.
Fantastic work. In this age of digital distribution, I see no need to pre-order games, but I need to pre-order this one.
This just makes me beyond excited! The visuals, and my gosh THAT SOUNDTRACK. It's all coming back, even though I journey through Riven at least once every two years or so.

This looks great, though part of me does miss the effect of sun rays pouring through the stained glass that was in the original game. It’s a striking look I wish was brought back, along with the harsh glare used on some surfaces like the great golden dome. Anyway keep up the amazing work.

The fruits (offerings) are half the meaning of the scene, of course, they are there.

I'm so excited... my dad and I would play this a lot when I was growing up. Can't wait to watch the intro with him, and take one of those "tram rides" we remember so fondly.

Can't wait to play this, Riven is my absolute favourite of the series. Was blown away by it as a kid when my grandpa showed it too me, and am still blown away by it today.
Nitpicking: the cobber stone floor has no displacement.It's looking unnatural flat
That kind of thing will become very noticeable if they release a VR version

This game is so difficult. I was able to finish Myst in 3 days without a guide back during the 90s but i cannot complete this one without a guide.
I can't wait for this. I really, really want you guys to get to a point where you remaster Myst III. I just want to do that marble island in 4k. That last bit where you ride in the glass ball I have wanted to see in HD for as long as I can remember. Easily one of my favorite moments in the Myst games.
I watched my sister play this game when i was 8 years old, when she got to the temple the music spooked me so much i randomly had a leg spasm and kicked the desk.
Didn’t it always look like this 😅 (Seriously though, excellent job on bringing RIVEN to the 21st Century, looking forward to diving in with VR 🙌🏼)

Just one detail: the texture of the supposed holes does not correspond to the metal rods, it is slightly displaced to the right. 😅

The sounds and music of Riven was the perfect match for this game. It always brought about a sense of mystery and intrigue.
Riven is favourite as well and I was also very young when I played it and didn´t understand everything nor could I finish it without any help but I loved the world, atmosphere, music & sounds and of course the puzzles etc.
I hope this remake will be awesome as well and will get a lot of support from longtime fans as well as new people who might play this for the first time.
Also I always wonder what happened to the Riven world after the official ending and if we could get a sequel to Riven "Riven II" maybe? Or a new game that is inspired by Riven? :D

From Myst to Riven shows before and after pictures demonstrating a custom glare shader they applied to this stained glass. This looks more like the before picture than the after picture. I wonder if that effect is harder to achieve or somehow wouldn't look right in 3D.
Now if you could release the Riven OST on vinyl my life could be complete.

I appreciate the choice to not greeble everything like crazy. It’s easy to get carried away in the pursuit of detail and fidelity, but this cleaner geometric look keeps a certain continuity with the original style. So many remakes and remasters lack of a sense of intentionality in their visual design.

You really should add wind to the game, so the lights would sway ever so slightly. Would give some life to the scene.
It's inside. And "making things sway" is almost always overdone to a ridiculous and suspension-of-disbelief-shattering extent. Hardly ever necessary and more often than not distracting...

Gehn jump scare in 3...2...1....
For those who may not know, in the original, there was a scripted sequence where the door to the chamber coming from the maglev was closed (even though you had left it open) and then opens when you approach, revealing that Gehn is actually sitting in the control chair, projecting his image into the chamber! It was a truly chilling moment, and it will be exciting to see how they handle that in the remake.

Where to get this in HDR format? The HDR in the last Myst was wonky on PC and Mac, I hope it's fixed in Riven.
I'm very excited to see this! I will always remember it was the first IT problem I had to solve, every video played twice on my original copy in 1998…..open a door it played then snapped back and played again. Turns out it was because I had 2 versions of QuickTime installed! I've got multiple copies of all the games in all different formats I'm very excited for this one too!

I just finished myst for the first time last week, with no idea this was coming out this year. Its been extremely difficult to wait to play Riven, knowing the original is available to me, but I'm willing to put it on hold to experience it for the first time in 4k.
It's interesting how they weren't going to add music to the original Myst, and yet, I can't imagine the game without it! In this simple scene it really sets the mood. Some of my favourite music was from Myst 4 , specifically named "Enter Spire".
Paraphrasing Tim Schaffer (I think): this is how we experienced it, out of those low-res graphics, because they were super high tech at the time. And now we will have a worthy remake, let us play it again as we remember it.
