      I suspect those are literally the original sounds, and the gameplay is deliberately paced in this trailer to match those sounds. I will be amazed and delighted if they somehow reproduce the original sound effects in 3d spatial audio, but I’m not counting on it.

    • @SamMaddie2
      @SamMaddie2 2 месяца назад +7

      @@ViviFuchs Agreed, but from what I've seen they brought on a professional animator for this one and Ghen actually looks near-photorealistic and more on-par with Metahuman (which is good, because the low-res 2d video won't work for VR mode, where you need to be able to see different angles of the character)

    • @NYKevin100
      @NYKevin100 2 месяца назад +5

      @@ViviFuchs The cinematics in Riven are more integrated into the world than the cinematics in Myst were (in Myst, most cinematics were talking heads on screens or linking panels, but Riven has a lot of scenes where NPCs walk around in the playable area). Looks amazing, but few minute details still missing... For example, the spinning room in the beginning, after half of the rotation animation the room should slow down before stopping (as would be logical physically). Also, when the "cage" rises above the chair in the next section, when the metal beams get to their highest point they should wobble in place after stopping. Both of those points were in the original, and they're an integral part of what made this world feel so real to me... I really hope they're still in the pipeline. In any case, looks incredible, can't wait to see how the final product comes out, and I hope against hope that this time you'll include live footage of actors...

  • @monkeywithocd
    @monkeywithocd 2 месяца назад +21

    I'm a little concerned at the lack of lurching in a lot of the animations, resulting in unnaturally sudden stops and starts, but at least the small amount of the maglev that was shown did show some lurching (though not as much as the original), as well as the track suggesting they didn't compromise it for VR comfort (I mean this as a good thing to be clear), and the sound after the fade shows that we'll still get the "swoosh" from passing the supports which I'm super happy about as I was concerned they'd omit it as they failed to include such touches in Firmament.
    Other than that, I think the effect on the beetles looks a bit "cheap" for some reason, and switching from peepholes to windows makes sense for making the game possible in VR, but is perhaps not as cool. It was also really interesting to see that the layout of things has changed, and I think I actually kind of like it. I particularly like the changes to the "spider" chair.
    All in all still super excited about this remake! I hope the animations aren't in their final state here, but either way it's going to be so exciting to get to relive my favorite game in a new way.

    • @Alahmnat
      @Alahmnat 2 месяца назад +12

      Yeah, I've noticed that a lot of animations in their realtime efforts have been lacking in the sort of bounce, anticipation, and follow-through that their pre-rendered counterparts had (my metric for the quality of a Myst remake is how well it reproduces the desk toy in Sirrus's bedroom in Stoneship, and so far they've all been disappointing…). I'm hoping they take a pass at plussing things before release, because the rotating room especially feels weird without the subtle wobble at the end of the rotation to imply the mass of the room settling against the mechanisms.

      If you only read praise, you doubt yourself with your criticism...
      At last I'm reading something critical.
      And I'm a bit more disappointed about the textures than you all are!
      In the rotating room, none of the grids are real 3D. All the shadows are painted on 2D maps. That's a huge step backwards! Because of VR performance? Maybe...
      But even the textures of the stone walls at the entrance, light and shadow ratios, transitions between the edges...
      The same at the entrance to the room with the chair...writing, ornaments, edges on the chair...And then the animation of the bridge, where the water only moves when the bridge moves...I sincerely hope that things like that don't stay that way!
      I already didn't like it in Firmament, how pixels moved along the edges of moving objects in the surroundings...On the transport gondola here you can clearly see the mask at the back below the small extension. The unnatural shadow cast by the right track on the upper edge of the foundation when you move towards the gondola.
      And in general the unnatural sharpness of all the shadows...
      When you sit in the gondola, look at the transition of the edges on the left from the rock to the foundation...it makes no sense! Why does nobody care about such details when creating?
      The lever moves and the pixelated unnatural reflection on the windshield...
      At least I'm enthusiastic about the fog effects on the water...and the floating line at the bottom just before the fade out...

    • @mplser
      @mplser 2 месяца назад +7

      Even though we played the original Riven in 640x480, the animation sequences and environments felt more real. Agree with you on the “lurching”. There could in general be a bit more motion blur and finesse to the animations themselves. Many in this teaser feel a bit linear or lacking in the realness of the material they portray. The rotating room should come to a slow stop (it’s heavy no??) and emit dust effects around the doorway (it’s old and made of stone!).
      The beetle wings opening had a lot of motion blur in the original from what I recall which made them feel less cheap when opening.
      The maglev is the best here. The door opening with some jitter is pretty close to what I’d expect for worn metal and there’s a nice sway when the rotation of the pod comes to a stop.
      It’s so close to capturing the feel of the original that we all fell in love with, just needs a little more attention to detail.

    This is honestly pretty insane if I recall memories from my childhood while watching this video.
    I love the fact that everything is now physically on it's actual place in the rooms and surrounding chambers/paths.
    In the original you would klick on something you like to view and it would basically just switch the pre rendered image... but now it's there, the cave, the control room behind windows or doors, physically.
    This must be fantastic in VR. (Hopefully also PSVR2 maybe?)
    The game has that exact same feeling like the old one, but yet it is somehow new and like we never seen it before.

    Well this is interesting. Not just because of changes made to facilitate VR or visual upgrades, like the peepholes in the rotating room or the clear oceanic gaps caused by underwater heated fissures (LOVE that touch!) but also because it seems they're going to make some gameplay changes, as indicated by the lever on the right of the projection chair. That never existed before... I wonder why they're putting that in.

    • @dustingarner4620
      @dustingarner4620 2 месяца назад +7

      That lever on the right of the projection chair seems to lower the bridge that connects Crater Island to Temple Island. In the original, you needed to lower that bridge from the inside of the golden dome, and then go the long way around (Temple Island->Jungle Island->Crater Island->Temple Island) just to extend a walkway that connects the two walkways within the golden dome. In the original, you can pretty quickly make this trek, as it only requires some fast clicking.
      I was actually thinking about that trek the other day when I was replaying Riven. I thought it would be a lot more tedious to do with free movement in the remake. It seems they added the lever in order to make this quicker, so you can connect the golden dome walkways as soon as you leave Crater Island the first time. Honestly that doesn't even change that much puzzle-wise because you would still have to rotate the pentagonal room to turn on the power. I'm guessing they made a few changes like this to make gameplay more manageable with the new movement system.

    • @monkeywithocd
      @monkeywithocd 2 месяца назад +3

      Oh, yeah, I loved the gaps in the ocean too. Small detail I don't think I personally ever would have thought to add. As for the chair, I love the changes as it makes more sense in-world. Wasn't the control to open the temple door originally on the wall instead of on the chair? Given that Gehn used that chair to project a god-like image of himself in the temple it makes sense that he would want to control the door from there, and in the original it's obvious he was able to given what happens when you first return to Temple Island from the maglev.
      As for the new bridge camera and lever, I can see that making sense that as a safety measure Gehn would want to also monitor the other entrance to the island.

      They absolutely are making changes. According to the Game Informer article "As a result, the new Riven isn’t a carbon copy of the original. There are new puzzles, new locations, and new pieces of lore alongside structural changes to make the world more narratively consistent."

    • @Mo0rc
      @Mo0rc Месяц назад

      I also noticed that the entire room seems to have moved location. Before, it was in a cave, but did you notice there seems to be an intense sunlight-drenched rock outside that room now? I don't think Ghen's projection chair is inside a cave anymore! I really hope the puzzles aren't just a carbon copy of the original Riven. The Myst remake lacked something for me, it just didn't capture the feeling I had playing the original all those years ago. A big part of that was that I knew the layout and puzzles of every single age.

    • @monkeywithocd
      @monkeywithocd Месяц назад

      @@Mo0rc With the rather drastic changes we've already seen to the layout, it's almost agiven that the puzzles are going to be changed up. If nothing else the different placement of the dome on Temple Island means that the fire marble puzzle will have to be changed. Plus, the windows in the beetle room I think shows that like with the Myst remake they're making certain changes to make it work better in VR, which has me very curious about how they're going to handle the porthole under the star fissure since a large number of the changes in Myst were done to remove any leaning over that would have to be done.

    This has to make you appreciate the immaculate art direction and crazy skill that went into the original Riven. Of course this looks stunning and developers are extremely talented. But Riven was made decades ago and still looks stunning. Sure, it was pre-rendered but it still took next-level artistry to produce the degree of 3d graphics we saw in Riven back in the 90s. We're talking the days before PBR, path-tracing, rendering on GPUs, tools like zbrush, substance, etc... none of those existed back then. It was so much more difficult to produce realistic 3d nature in the 90s. And Riven knocked it out of the park.

    Hey! This footage makes me think about something... Why did you guys stop using a "Hand cursor" in your games? It was such a part of the Myst identity for me, and it helped convey different kind of interactions (Grab, click, drag, etc.)
    That being said, it's incredible how great this looks. The photo-realism is top notch... your previous Unreal Engine games looked great, but this is next level, i mean it doesn't have the usual "Glossy" Unreal feel, it looks life like.
    Also, it's soooooooo exciting to see all the small changes... Position of the rotating dome, the windows instead of the peepholes, the new levers and interactions in the chair... can't wait to see more! :D

      @@Cynbel_Terreus They've been using the circle cursor since URU, so it has nothing to do with VR.
      My two cents, I suspect it has to do with how their focus has always been on interface minimalism. It also has the benefit of not alienating people with different skin colors without having to implement the ability to change the skin tone of the cursor like Myst 4 did. I suspect that's why they went with the mickey mouse hands in VR for the recent Myst remake (which, Cyan, if you're reading this, *PLEASE* just use human hands in this like you did with Firmament- and ditch the shiny orange balls too, they are way too immersion breaking).

    1. God that end was such a tease, you knew we were waiting on it, you build it up, then cut it off. You know we need to experience that in game, it's probably amazing in VR (which I don't have)
    2. It's mildly a bit odd that the rotating room at the start seems to just stop ad the end of its rotation, it seems like it should settle a bit at the end.
    3. The walkway raising in the view screen while in the chair looks like there might be some weird motion blur artifacting, hard to say what's causing that.
    Those 2 points are nitpicky, but the animation of the room could be easily addressed and maybe it already has. I am super excited, I watched this and was like DAMN this looks exactly how I remember it. I love the peephole changes as well, a great touch. I look forward to release announcement and when it drops.
