Edge making fun of Kurt Angle with the signs, the shirt switch, and the "You Suck!" chant were the best.
Good funny is Eddie Guerrero’s lying cheating and stealing to win a match. I.E. Wrestlemania 20 vs Kurt Angle.... the boot thing!
And Angle holding the boot like a bootleg WWE Championship!!
Brock H when Eddie would beg on his knees then run out of the ring on his knees
Miss Eddie
Also their was a chair bit he did that was hilarious.
Anything Eddie did to be honest was funny that was ment to be funny from having people line up for an unmasking for stealing his wallet to his smackdown antics.
Mick also had the luxury of good timing when the Mankind gimmick started to turn silly with the sock and everything because it was in the midst of the all time record highs for the wrestling business, especially the WWF. They were so white hot that, 99% of the time, it didn't matter how silly they got. That's another point presented by Jim himself in the past: "When you're hot, you can't fuck it up, you can be as silly as you want to."
Alan Rizkallah Mick himself admitted Mankind turned into a clown in 1999 and his ring work sucked. Thankfully he got back in shape to retire as Cactus Jack, that street fight with HHH was one of the best matches I ever saw
@MemphoWrasslin1
He became beloved, and as such, we didn't want to see him hurting doing "hard-core/death" matches.
We cared about him cos he's a loveable guy....
...but when Cactus Jack returned!??
😍😍😍😍
Fun and games was over - THAT'S talent!!
Mick is one of those people who had the skills to be both serious and funny when needed. I think it's due to his actual self and probably his friendship with Terry funk.
I love The Hurricane, he's probably my most favorite "comedy" wrestler.
"Most favorite" is redundant and makes you sound like a moron.
What's up wit dat?
@@joemama7163 and being pedantic makes you look like an asshole
I think he’s a perfect example of good funny not being bad funny
Royal Rumble 2002
He tries to chokeslam both Triple H and Stone Cold Steve Austin
Of course it doesn’t work
But it’s hilarious that he’s trying it.
Remember Hurricane’s sidekick? Super-Hero In Training, Rosey. It was so subtle but it worked so well. Now, that was some good SHIT. ;)
"I wish the sheik had come and fuckin' bladed McCauly Culkin" Thank you
2:30
"The Bushwhackers"
"...Doing what?"
As a 37yo bartender Corny is my spirit animal. These kids are breaking the business and I won't fucking have it.
My favorite part of every day is cutting a Cornette inspired promo on a 22yo waitress who is costing us and especially herself money. Never quit Jim. We need you.
I love how Cornette says the old British term "piss taken out of"
I disagree about Gillberg - as I saw it as being similar to Nacho Man and the Huckster. It was mocking the competition, saying "our guys are better than this horseshit". Shark Boy in his Stone Cold phase was just aping for the sake of cheap heat.
But yeah - Hurricane is Good Funny, for the most part, because of how they handled it and how it got across. The time he squeaked a victory on the Rock was a great moment. The bits between him and the Rock were fantastic.
Is this the one where he says he wishes they had bladed little Macaulay Culkin? LOL
Yes and to be honest I could actually see an older wrestler like the sheik being the one to do it.
I've never been more than a passing fan of wrestling but something about Jim Cornette just makes me want to listen to him. I dunno, it's like "this guy's probably not gonna give me a bunch of bullshit at least"...
He's fantastic, only thing that gets under my skin is he's incapable of taking responsibility for himself but he insists everyone else should be accountable. Just look at the tuxedo match comment.. 2 managers doing it is goofy, but me (a manager) doing it with another manager is okay because we hate each other. That's just a small example, if you listen regularly you'll see what I mean, especially now I've said it if you hadn't before.
Except when it comes to US politics. Jim treats Democrats like saints and Republicans like demons. Both parties suck.
@ darl...which isnt true, he just says teu p AMD his cult are stooopid AF which is right, YOU SNOWFLAKE interpret " but , but hillary" into it again. Grow up.
I can't believe I finally got a question on
Mr. Socko also worked in that storyline because that is when he was mentally breaking. He would wear that white shirt spray-painted with black stripes because he was a ref once. He wanted to make Vince happy, which did not work, but in that scenery, it worked because of just how broken Mankind was.
Macauley culkin bladed and bleeding out 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Krossfire 2406 😭😭😭
I’d pay to see that
The Sheikh coming out and blading Macaulay Culkin would have changed that kids life for the better.
I think that happened when he was fucking Mila Kunis for years.
That might've been very dangerous for the Sheik. Who knows what Culkin has in his bloodstream?
@@meekrob Say what you want about that guy, but he's independently wealthy and he only works when he wants to.
😭😭😭
Pete Rose dressed as theChicken when Kane kicked his ass was good funny.
Hey now, the getting sad at the fake cat getting messed with gimmick is a good idea
Thank you Sir Brian last for these clips. Awsome
I wish the Iron Sheik came out and bladed Malcully Caulkin.
- James E. Cornette
I agree on all except Gillberg. Gillberg was a riot
I don't think daryl is bad considering takahashi is supposed to be a nutcase, and most the talent treats him like a nutcase for it.
9:14 Jim's Michael Jackson Impersonation
Comedy is in the timing.
Good Funny = Eddie Guerrero, Crash Holly, Al Snow, Mick Foley, Danhausen
Bad Funny: Olivier, Bucks, Pockets, 70% of All Petite "Wrestling".
One of the few times I disagree with Jim regarding wrestling is on Mr. Socko. That was hilarious and Foley nailed it!
Corney attacked people with a monogrammed, glittery tennis racket, so he can’t talk too much
"If Rikishi wanted to really just take his big, naked ass and just smash it in your fucking face..." My sides! Can't stop laughing! XD
Bobby Heenan in the weasel costume falls under the good comedy list. Cause it's a heel manager receiving well-deserved punishment.
By all accounts, Hornswoggle is a nice guy......but his gimmick deserves nothing but scorn.
Sadly, you're pretty much typecast as soon as you walk through the door.
"Oh PERFECT! It's almost March. Do we ever have an idea for you..."
Well the problem with midgets and wrestling is that NO ONE takes them serious.
By all accounts, Hornswoggle is a dick.
Cameron even Swoggle admits he is an asshole
This immediately made me think of the Roman Reigns 'sufferin succotash son' promo from RAW a few years ago.
God I hope who ever wrote that line was fired.
Yep. The Iron Sheikh is also my "go to" guy when the comedy angle slops over into the ring. "I humble you . . ."
Mr. Socko was great. The Rock and Sock Connection made for some of the most hilarious promos and great matches
I got a dairy queen ad before the video 😂
Mr. Socko is exempt from the stupidity rule, because it is an actual and legitimate finishing hold… just with a sock on the hand while you do it. :)
Got to correct Jim on one thing, the kiss my ass Club was not Russo, he was already gone by then.
My favorite comedy spots are always when the heel turns around to see the baby face when he's not expecting it and their reactions, most notably cornette and a heel Hulk Hogan
KHayes666 I always loved it in matches when the heel would get whipped into the ropes, duck under the faces clothesline, snag the ropes and turn to the crowd pointing to their heads and showing off their intelligence, only to turn and catch one in the mouth by the Babyface. That always made me smile
bigjoe8420 That's what I'm talking about, THATS funny without being stupid, not fake hand grenades or dick spots
Good funny for me was Edge & Christian impersonating the Conquistadors - I loved how they would go over to the Spanish announce table and nod as the Spanish announcers talked and looked bemused, and the way they kept saying “Si Sinõr!”
Bad funny is the tag team of Billy Gunn & Chuck Palumbo, with all the gay insinuation stuff they did
Oh no...the way the MSM bought it hook, line, and sinker, was the best rib ever! I'll never forget that Katie Couric interviewed them like it was serious business...I laughed like a looney!
Great words about Mick Foley. Always enjoyed Jim Cornette and he really is a master storyteller. I wish I had known sooner he was doing these.
Jim's photo with Randy Hogan always made me laugh.
socko works because foley was playing a deranged baby face so comedy is fine for a face and using a sock is ok for an insane person lol
One time that I remember that cracked me up that involved mr socko was actually the court case of Eric bishoff.
Kurt Angle was practically Carlton from Fresh Prince of Bel Air
IF Carlton, once in the ring, was YOUR OLYMPIC GOLD CHAMPION!, who won a gold medal with a BROKEN FREEKIN NECK!
Seriously, what made Angle such a great comedy heel was, no matter his promos, he was a wrestling machine when the bell rang.
That's perfect 😂😂
Good funny is when the tag team of The Machines, in their masks and the big mystery was who they were and then in Six Man tags they would add the Piper Machine or the Giant Machine. Those were great!!
Had no idea Piper was the biggest machine which now makes me realize some 35 years later those other machines were short guys or damn near midgets 😅
@@tobiasfarragut292 Piper would come out with the Machine mask on and a kilt!!!
Dan Huff ok so not the same big machine after all because I would’ve definitely remembered a machine with the piper kilt on..even all these years and blunts Later
The rubber hand 😂 I was a kid watching this
My problems with things like the dick toss, invisible hand grenade and things like that is the breaking down the 4th wall. If the bit does that, I think it is wrong.
roddypiperfan What about... THE LEGENDARY ASSHOLE OF JUSHIN THUNDER LIGER!!!!!
I guess I am fortunate not to be familiar with that one. If it is in the same class as the dopey gimmicks I mentioned(which the name you gave it sounds that way) it is part of the problem.
roddypiperfan It was a 10 man tag team match where Jushin Thunder Liger LED train of people who has their thumb up someone's ass. That was from PWG.
What's wrong with that? Is breaking the fourth wall not popular in every other entertainment medium? See Deadpool, Ferris Bueller, etc. But I guess there's a difference between the industries.
"Stone Cod" Sharkboy RULED.
The original stinkface should count as 'good' comedy if it's even comedy at all; it's a big 400lb man using force and ritually humiliating the victim. It served as a precursor to a banzai drop, often. As a heel, it's a good heat-drawing move, as being a dick to the babyface, and as a babyface, it's a great way for the heel to get some comeuppance without killing their heat or aura because they can still cheat to win and then get that as some measure of comeuppance. It was when it became 'a thing' and they had women's stinkface matches and stuff like that that it crossed the line into stupid.
the Kiss My Ass club segments, much as I hated them, are similar, it's the heel ritually humiliating the babyface, making you want to see them get their comeuppance. Much like the Lawler "kiss my foot" match back in the early 90s.
Shark Boy in general I would say goes in the category with the TL Hoppers and the others that Jim talks about - it may be a silly gimmick, but Sharky could work, and was a pretty decent X-Division guy for years. Curry Man goes in the same category. The gimmick was hokey but everybody and their mom knows Daniels is a hell of a worker and he made the hokey character into a credible wrestler, so as you can do the kind of thing Jim talks about here, talk about how he's unpredictable and strange and we don't know why he's acting and dressing like this but he's not to be underestimated as a fighter.
Sandow as the stunt double was a great one because it got over as him doing the comedy bits, but it also slow-built to an ending along the Virgil-turns-on-Dibiase lines, where it became clear Miz was taking advantage of Sandow and though he was doing hokey fake bumps, you could buy that it was because Miz was either buying him off to do so and he was so concerned for his job that he literally mimicked everything (i.e. Miz is a Dibiase-style heel) or Miz is forcing him into it (i.e. Miz is an abusive heel). They then just fucked up the face turn.
Shark Boy works, but stone cold shark boy does not
Too much money got spent and people didn’t want to see an okay gimmick pretend to be Steve Austin
"*sigh* And once again...!"
If you think about it, The Undertaker angle could've been bad funny. You give that character to any other wrestler and it wouldn't have had even a normal shelf life, let alone an over thirty year legacy life. Mark Calaway treated it totally real, respected it and the audience, and took that potentially dumb angle to amazing heights. Jim is right that it's all about context and presentation.
That Cornette sigh, "Meh-teh...", lmfao.
Kiss my ass club was definitely intentionally funny. But Cornette is 100% right that Vince 100% sold it as serious. The Mr. McMahon character took it 100% seriously.
simplest explanation: good funny makes you laugh and doesn't make wrestling look like shit. bad funny (generally) does not make you laugh and makes wrestling look like shit
OH! SHELL!! YEAH!!!
Shark Boy 24-7 says I'm gone fish some bass!
and that's the fishing line, cause shark boy said so
Good funny is Ricky Starks doing impressions of his opponents, bad funny is anything Kenny Omega or The Bucks do.
"Urghh,uurghh,Irr,eergh i-i-ihh"-Cornette
The stinkface worked because it's a humiliation move and it got a reaction plus it was done by a heavy dude so it looked embarrassing. Bad stink face is have Asuka doing it hot but 1. She's talented and booked as a killer. 2. Having an attractive woman do the stinkface to another attractive woman is more softcore exploitive bullshit.
The stinkface works when the opponent is receiving it like Rikishi. Humiliating enough that you’d rather take a tombstone from the Undertaker than to have that.
It doesn’t work when it comes from an attractive wrestler. The meaning of the move changes completely and it becomes something to watch rather than a sight to turn your head away from. Much like seeing The Great Khali do the Sweetchin Music on someone but lacking the fundamentals to pull it off and not looking right doing it on his opponent.
Also it works because it's not that far fetched that you could do that.
Only rikisho could do it but I cant remember who but I remember a worse female wrestler during the diva's era of wwe doing the move.
What about DX finding secret rooms under the ring, the little people court.
I remeber back in kayfabe days, in memphis one saturday after noon i saw on tv freddie and jason vs the moon dogs. Freddie and jason were the babyfaces.
I could see the invisible man working under very very very very specific circumstances
It needs to be
This guy is insane, he thinks he’s seeing a wrestler that’s not even there.
He thinks he’s fighting a guy that’s not even there.
That can work under very very specific circumstances, without spitting at Kayfabe.
The invisible man doesn’t work regardless of how it is presented. I hate to break that to you.
"Vince always made it look legitimate"
He had a match with God. And still I see that more like a crazy boss who tripping. They do present it like vince is just acting up and using his huge amount of money
But honestly that's true
You got to remember its Vince, a guy who hates sneezing, doesn't savor food and had a moment where he was going to rib a stooge and shit himself the went out and went to rib the stooge without changing clothes if he found a way to fight God and the devil he would do it just to prove he was the best.
Jim Cornette opinion on everything about wrestling:
Before the 80s: Everything is great
After the 80s: Everything is shit
My opinion about comedy in wrestling is if is funny and doesn´t look to much fake is good. The prove is the people´s elbow or the rikishi stinkface or Daryl ( the stuffed animal ) are things that work, that are funny or creative and doesn´t make the product fake.
But now here's the question - if the Sheik had caused Culkin to bleed out by tying a piece of string to the ceiling, then tying a metal paint can to the other end, and swinging the can at Culk's head...
Would that be good funny or bad funny?
Well that depends would it kill culkin, make him bleed an unholy fountain like some of flair or dusty matches, make only a small cut or it being a rib and it was a gimmicks blade that wasn't even a danger.
I've typed this a million times but someone please tell Jim it's "asterisk." Not "asterick."

...did you just say invisible people? Fux sakes.
When the fuck did Hornswoggle do a bit with Macaulay Culkin??? Guy must've been in his early 30's when Hornswoggle was in the fed.
I just realized... the only time Vince truly broke Mr McMahon kayfabe (that I can recall) was when Benoit died.
Fuck.
As a comic book dude myself. Surprisingly I had no problem with the hurricane. Unless they showed him actually displaying superpowers. You just treat it the way Jim said they used the boogeyman. Sure we all know he isn't a superhero. But his crazy ass believes it.
Would like to know his opinion on the trillionair ted vignettes the wwe put out. Cause they hit almost all of his criteria for bad funny.
Post hell in a cell 98 Mick Foley basically had a pass with fans to do whatever he wanted to
Post-98 Mick Foley still had some great actual matches though. He wasn’t just all comedy.
I am watching this for the first time. And I'm pausing @0:34. Good "funny": Kane coming out during the mini's match. None of the little people were hurt. It was "funny" but had a bit of edge at the moment because no one knew (at the time) if anyone would be hurt.
Bad funny: A dumbass holding AN INVISIBLE GRENADE and everyone in the ring giving the bump to the fake grenade. It's stupid, it's an example of the exact reason I stopped watching wrestling. Because they made it into a shit-show.
Yes
Good example doink the clown on Raw in the background in the Audience
I think socko was funny and worked because the character of mankind was supposed to be crazy
I could be wrong but didnt mr socko start when Vince was in the hospital and it just caught on?

The title of this should be "Distinction without a Difference"....
sharkboy was great
I used to be friends with that guy.
I only liked Stone Cold Sharkface :)
He needs to come out to the baby shark theme.
The fine line between good funny and bad funny is thin and talent related: Mizdow and Damien being the stunt double : good funny Grenade spot: worst thing in years. also GIMME A SHELL YEAH! sorry but shark boy was great the x division was very shaky for a while in terms of the gimmick and promo side of it.
BJDAFENIX I missed the stunt double thing. When Miz took a bump did Sandow sigh and force himself to do it or did he just bump no matter what?
He just did it. No hesitation from what I remember.
When mick dressing up as Santa
Spoiler alert: it depends
Maybe Jim would change his tune on Mr. Socko if they mentioned that it led to the cobra of Santino Marella and we know he hates him.
I was waiting for it lol
Bastardising greatness doesn't diminish it.
Santino's move was a "bop on the head" - not even a slap/punch.
Socko was a CHOKE - suffocating is painful.

Jim Cornette always has said that Mick Foley and Lisa Marie Varon were too nice for the Wrestling business. And Glenn Jacobs too. Those 3 but I have to add a fourth one. Duane Gill. His whole character was a mockery of Goldberg. Gillberg was doomed to fail but somehow Gillberg made it work. And I am not sure what Jim Cornette would think of him because of his no nonsense attitude which I agree with. But Gillberg is an exception because of how nice he is. He was happy to be a jobber as long as he was in the ring. He was there I guess when both HHH and Undertaker debut. Not as Gillberg because that came later. He just had so much love and respect for the guys and the business. Funny how Kane and Victoria AKA Lisa Marie Varon are so different than the characters they play. When Mick Foley first came in I didn't know what to think of him but later I could tell he was a good guy. Eddie Guerrero was really nice too.
Shark Boy is one of the reasons I never took TNA seriously
The corn knows
I disagree with Cornette on the Bushwhackers. They absolutely made the business look ridiculous & there was nothing believable about them.
Agreed.
They were as legitimate, as the sentient Gecko on the Geico commercials.
I love Corny, but comedy wrestling does absolutely nothing to hurt wrestling in today's world. In 1985? Yes, definitely destructive to that era of wrestling. 2018? Please. At some point, you have to be able to wink at the audience a bit and acknowledge that they know what's what. The world is so much less naive now. Not just about wrestling but about television in general. The cat is so far out of the bag it shouldn't be a concern. You can watch a dick plex on one show and enjoy a good, old-fashioned world championship blood match on another show and absolutely nothing has changed for you.
LeoMDK you're a mark fuck
@@skinhead-ej8ff
Indeed.
Real arrogant to call them "naive in those days"... but if they only people he's better than is "long dead old "naive" wrestling fans"...
Honestly the only issue with that way of thinking is that while its true there can be comedy in wrestling, the issue is that 1. Instead of it being natural it feels more forced and hokey which for a medium where you are trying to show off that these people could hold their own in a fight can be problematic especially when you start associating them with comedy more and more to the point you cant take them as a serious fighter when needed and 2. There needs to be a boundary for this because time and time again people have gotten too far for their own good that's why gimmicks like oklahoma, kerwin white and so on were able to be shown on tv.
Thats exactly whats wrong with the business today and the reason nobody really gives a fuck anymore
This is clearly before the lazy guy on AEW
Socko was ridiculous. Jim making exceptions for friends here.
I actually really liked stone cold shark boy
9:50 Hornswoggle 🤣👌🏻
Mr Socko is a fucking legend
Mankind was the shit! Hurricane was a nice change and you wanted him to win so bad!
what about the undertaker summoning lightening bolts? i know it wasnt for laughs but it was very 4th wall breaking
@@colebrown8293
4th time today I've come across a pisspoor claim of "4th wall breaking" in wrestling.
🤦🏿♂️
I can't understand Jim's hatred of Stone Cold Shark Boy. It was easily one of the best things TNA ever did. I don't care if they were acknowledging a bigger promotion
It's a sad day in wrestling when people honestly think a dude named "Shark Boy" who does a Stone Cold Steve Austin impression as "one of the best things" in any sort of context... smh
TheSwordfish009 don't bitch at me, TNA are the ones who've produced a shitty wrestling show for 16 years
Because he's right - it just reminds people "oh yeah, the better guy is on the other channel!" Sharkboy overall is great - I wasn't a fan of the Stone Coild gimmick.
Brian Crocker Stone Cold was most certainly not on the other channel in 2008
wwfwrestlingfan4ever Wasnt the first time Russo outright copied WWE. Remember Buzzkill?
Idc what anyone says, Mae Young hand birth was hilarious
Triple h trying to be funny is cringe
his dx stuff was amusing.
agreed HHH is so unfunny it's crazy. I can imagine having to be forced to laugh at his jokes
Jim's gimmick, is as silly as the guys he hates. As usual Jim hates the guy who drew the biggest ratings ever and took his job 3 times. I like Jim, but he had many times to face to face russo and he didn't want any
Enzo would sell for the boogyman just sayin 😆.... Enzo needee a guide " babysitter" otherwise he wasnt horrible but he was no where near good either. Mic skills. Top 10 ever.
Mankind win
So I guess Owen Hart "no selling" the Sharpshooter at a house show, as told by Mick Foley, was not funny.
It was a house show, likely noone noticed, but he sold the shit out of it when Bret finally cinched it up to the point it hurt. :-)
BigJay7410 Difference in a house show with no cameras on and doing it on Raw with Shawn Michaels eating a lollipop while Ken Shamrock the UFC badass has an ankle lock on
I know, that humour is subjective, but none of the things mentioned were funny to me.
I loved the hurricane, but he never was funny to me. You know, like a clown, or something^^
What made me laugh were the things Rock did, or Jericho. I also loved the "tea time" with Santino Marella and Sheamus. Those were funny to me.
But guys like Sharkboy, Hurricane and the like, guys like Orange Cassidy are not funny, they are good workers. I can't laught at them - or with them, since I am admiring their work. Same goes with those guys who wrestle invisible men, or blow up dolls. Those are, in my opinion, masters of their craft, since they are literally wrestling a broom and manage to sell for those things. I Imagine that is a pretty hard thing to do.
This may be one of the things I disagree with Jim Corentte on. Yes, they expose the business, but they still are good, at what they do. And that I can appreciate
I rarely disagree with Cornette when it comes to wrestling, but on Shark Boy, I thought it was hilarious and well done. I thought the fish bowl was dumb and a waste of money--agree there--but by 2008, except for sporadic appearances, Austin was out of WWE, so it was NOT telling people to go watch WWE. Shark Boy played it very well--it served as a minor draw and ratings spike. Even Steve Austin said he liked it and thought it was good. I have to disagree and go with good funny there.
D. Carpenter Shark Boy was stupid and embarrassing.
Opinions are like butt holes. Everyone has them. Wipe yours.
