Our parents lived in Sumter, we could not contact them. We drove 124 miles to get there. In our pickup truck we had large coolers of water. It was dark when we arrived, didn't know there was a curfew. We were stopped. Thought we would end up in jail, but let them see the supplys we brought for our familys. National Guard let us go. It was a terrible sight. My mother said she had never been so scared.
I was only 7 days away from being 1 month old, my mom was in Hartsville SC with me and my then 6yr sister and dad scared to death! It was bad in Darlinton County as well!
My dads family lives over in Oswego between 401 and 15, said their road was almost impassable if it wasnt for having a few tractors to pull some trees out of the way, luckily they didnt have any trees hit buildings on my granddads farm.
I remember this, like it was yesterday. I was born and raised in Sumter, SC 1981, I was there for hurricane Hugo
I was a freshman in high school at SHS. I remember this like it was yesterday. Something you never forget.

Hugo hit on the 21st. Not the 15th
No it was September 21st
Scariest night of our lives when Hugo hit in the dark of night.
I live in Sumter and I saw my old school and church how cool
Never forget that day
How ironic. September 15 2018 hurricane Florence comes through
