The reason why I love this fight so much is that it's more about physical fighting and not ki blasts. Plus, this was Studio Cockpit first display of greatness at animating a kickass figthing episode. Great breakdown.

If Gohan didn’t have all of them behind him, they would’ve had no chance.

The two most competitive fights in Dragon Ball history is this competition between Goku and Cell during the Cell Games and even later in the Buu Saga in the grudge match between Goku and Majin Vegeta. But then again a few honorable mentions would be the battle between Goku and Frieza where Goku was literary delivering gut blows and causing internal bleeding and even later during the final battle between Goku and Majin Buu.
Come to think of it, both vs Cell and Frieza are those rare times Goku is deliberately fighting to kill, going all in to put his enemy down. Not in it to enjoy the fight, or learn or make a point. It's a rare level of deadly intent for Goku and the animators really make it come across.

Absolute BEST fight in the anime. Not counting the movies, this fight was peak of technical skill and fighting in Z. Gave off mad nostalgia of the original Dragonball when skill and techniques won battles. From Buu Saga onward it turned into a contest on who can shoot the biggest Kamehameha or transform the loudest rofl. Super is pretty much about power ups and color changes. Can't take it serious at all.

Android to Cell was goated. Cell was before all this "turn back time" and "eh Beerus likes food from Earth so there's no real threat". Cell was an amazing idea, when I first saw him ragdoll Super Vegeta I was like "this is the most doomed the z warriors have been" then Trunks stepped in and Cell took us for a ride only to show us the futility of it. And how they flashed scenes of Goku realizing the mistake in the time chamber as Trunks was getting outsped, that was so so fkn great. Little glimmer of hope. Leading up to secretive Goku's plan it was pretty S tier storytelling by all standards tbh.

That and I fully believe Goku expected that Instant Transmission Kamahamaha to be fatal. Oh Goku knew immediately that hit wasn't fatal, he can sense energy and I don't get the impression Cell hid his power level to fake them out. The delay from Cell on getting up and regenerating I've always seen as Cell taking a moment to realize "Oh. That could have killed me. I expected it to kill me." Or as Abridged put it. To be fair super’s high budget fights are comparable as well, but generally speaking they’re mostly lackluster for sure.

Cell was an amazing idea, when I first saw him ragdoll Super Vegeta I was like "this is the most doomed the z warriors have been" then Trunks stepped in and Cell took us for a ride only to show us the futility of it.
And how they flashed scenes of Goku realizing the mistake in the time chamber as Trunks was getting outsped, that was so so fkn great. Little glimmer of hope. Leading up to secretive Goku's plan it was pretty S tier storytelling by all standards tbh.

yk the fact they can fly makes it even more intense because you'd think their form is bad but they can just use the fly hax for the extra hip rotation which makes bad form hits, hit HARD asf
I like how the end stats do show that even the animators for the fight were paying attention to the story - Cell was just a LIIITTLE bit stronger and faster than Goku at the time, but Goku had WAY more experience. Had they fought to the death, Goku prolly would have won.

That and I fully believe Goku expected that Instant Transmission Kamahamaha to be fatal. Oh Goku knew immediately that hit wasn't fatal, he can sense energy and I don't get the impression Cell hid his power level to fake them out. The delay from Cell on getting up and regenerating I've always seen as Cell taking a moment to realize "Oh. That could have killed me. I expected it to kill me." Or as Abridged put it. "How durable is he? How durable am I!?"
