One really messed up story not here is that of Peter Verhulsel. He got lost while cave diving in Sterkfontein Cave but then managed to find a large chamber with air. Problem was, rescuers thought he probably drowned and the rescue operation was called off shortly after. He survived in that chamber for three WEEKS before dying of starvation.
There are a few personal rules i follow when going cave exploring: 1) dont go alone 2) never go if theres even the smallest chance of rain 3) always keep backup flashlights and batteries on me at all times 4) always make sure several people know exactly where i'm going and when i'll be back And finally: 5) unless i'm 100% certain that myself and those i'm with will not get stuck, never ever go into small holes with no way to turn around. I haven't been cave exploring often cuss lots of people i've gone with have called me a hardass, but then again i am still alive and have never even remotely been in danger while caving.
FUN FACT: I heard on another video that in Sand Cave, he was actually going there quite frequently to remove debris to uncover more areas, he actually was quite comfortable going in and out of the cave. Eventually, he got stuck and knocked over the lantern. (breaking it) Then, he tried to unlodge himself by pushing on some rock to get out. The rock then fell and trapped him. (I think that's how it happened, I saw it on another caving video, but who knows, misinformation is everywhere and I might just be another subject to its misguidance).
Pretty sure internet historian made a video about this, and yes all your details are correct. Tho also not just a rock fell on his leg but a ton of gravel also. Additionally the only people who would go down their for a couple of days were Floyd’s brother, a friend of his, and a journalist trying to interview him.
*The last one is what broke me the most because I saw this in a Nat Geo documentary about the Nutty Putty cave incident :') and that was the reason why I developed claustrophobia.... It really broke me and terrified me at the same time...*
ive seen it before but a more elongated and more in detail video, it was actually terrible noone should have to go through that, no matter how bad of a person they are its tragic for the people that lost their lives i hope they live in peace forever and their familys are doing okay
On a totally unrelated note the map of unexplored caves and missing people have a massive correlation with each other. Dont put your life on the line stay away from caves.
I'm not even claustrophobic, but I'd still never go into a tight cave like that. I get stuck above ground, more than likely if someone knows I'm there they can get me out. I get stuck in a rocky cave underground, any attempts to save me could likely kill me faster.
I've heard that apparently, most human brains have at least a little bit of claustrophobic and agoraphobic tendencies, but i haven't backed that up yet, so might not be true.
I've come across each of these stories over a few different channels the past year or two. And I must say that you've done them all an honor in your re-telling of them. I've even watched the longer documentary on the tragedy of Dave Shaw's dive attempt. I'll never know why people put themselves in situations like these. Perhaps it's because I'm not the skinniest or smallest of guys. Maybe it's because I don't care for deep water nor do I have the patience to do compression stops to dive at depth. Or I could just be a skeered of being dead when I could easily avoid it all together. I guess we all have different ways of finding excitement in life. Whatever the case may be, I thoroughly enjoy this channel and the safety it provides as I watch people either much more brave or a little less smart than I venture out into the world to not only do things but do things in places that I try my best to actively avoid!
"Cave exploring can be one of the most rewarding experiences one can have" LITERALLY no reward. A waste of time, energy, and dangerous (sometimes lethal).
Dang dude, your content is amazing. Discovered it yesterday and I’m gonna say you earned my subscribe! You don’t just talk about stuff, you actually analyze it and tell the story. Thank you.
Misinterpretation: • There's a common misconception that a "30% chance of rain" refers to the percentage of the area that will receive rain. For instance, some people might think that if there's a "30% chance of rain," then 30% of the area will receive rainfall. However, this interpretation is not correct according to the standard way meteorologists express precipitation probabilities
In all the versions I heard of the Deon Dreyer and Dave Shaw story, they didn’t go down and attach anything to them after the accident. They had decided that it was too dangerous to send anyone else down there so they intended to just leave them. The only reason the bodies came out was because they went back to remove all the gear they had left after the accident. They pulled on the line that was placed to help guide Dave to the bottom and to Deon’s body. When they pulled on that, it just happened to be one of the lines Dave was tangled in so it pulled his and Deon’s bodies to the surface. So in a sadly poetic turn of events, Dave really did end up bringing Deon’s body back to the surface. 😔 At least he succeeded in his last mission.

Hey man I love caving stories but lately I’ve been noticing an influx of AI caving story channels that just repeat the same stories over and over again, badly. I just wanted to say that among the sea of lazy AI crap, I REALLY appreciate your REAL channel that you put actual effort into-and it shows! You’re also one of the VERY few to show your face and you add a nice personal touch to the way you tell these stories too, so they feel fresh even when they’re stories I already know about, which the same definitely cannot be said for these AI copycat channels. Keep up the great work!! 👍

The Floyd Collisons' story almost made cry. They came so close but failed due to being a day late. I knew he was going to die but watching the entire US come and help this man really shows how you want him to be saved only to be heartbroken because the rescue crew did not make it in time. Had Floyd survive a day later from his death date, he would have been alive and rescued. This story is why I would not go cave splunking because being trapped and knowing that you will die and never be found or have not your body be recovered because it is dangerous to do so.
