(1)①북대암은 557년(신라 진흥왕 18년) 초창했다고 하나 알 수 없다. 1851년 운악대사가 중수한 후 여러 차례 보수하여 오늘날에 이른다.(Bukdaeam hermitage is said to have been founded in 557 (the 18th year of King Jinheung of Silla), but the exact date is unknown. After being renovated by Monk Un-ak in 1851, it has undergone several repairs and remains as it is today.) ②북대암:운문사에서 보면 북쪽에 위치하고 있으며 제비집처럼 높은 곳에 지어져 있어서 북대암이라 이름 붙여졌다. 시선을 동쪽으로 돌려 쳐다보면 한 폭의 동양화를 대하는 듯하며 어떤 화가도 그 모양을 화폭에 담을 수는 없으며 솔거가 살아 온다해도 그 모양을 그릴수는 없을 것이다. 특히 오후 4시 정도의 햇빛을 받을 때는 정말 멋진 선경(仙境)이다.(Bukdaeam: It is located on the north side of Unmunsa Temple and is named Bukdaeam because it is built on a high place like a swallow's nest. If you look east, it looks like an oriental painting. No artist can capture its appearance on a canvas, and even if Solgeo were alive, he would not be able to draw its appearance. It is a truly wonderful fairyland, especially when it receives sunlight around 4 p.m.) ③북대암 법당에는 주불로 아미타부처님, 협시보살이신 지장보살님과 관세음보살님이 모셔져 있다. 법당과 칠성각, 산신각이 있으며, 근래 지장기도를 많이 봉행하고 있다. 북대암은 원래 운문사를 창건하기 전에 세워졌다고 하나 지금은 운문사에 소속된 산내암자라 할 수 있다.(The main Buddha of Bukdaeam hermitage is Amitabha Buddha, and the attendant Bodhisattvas Ksitigarbha and Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. There is a main hall, Chilseonggak, and Sansingak, and recently, many Ksitigarbha prayers are performed. It is said that Bukdaeam hermitage was originally built before the founding of Unmunsa Temple, but it can now be considered a mountain hermitage belonging to Unmunsa Temple.)
(2)북대암 법당 주련
일중일체다중일(一中一切多中一):하나속에 모든 것이 많은 것 가운데 하나이니
일즉일체다즉일(一卽一切多卽一):하나가 곧 일체이고 많은 것이 곧 하나이다
일미진중함십방(一微塵中含十方):한 티끌속에 온 우주가 들어 있어
일체진중역여시(一切塵中亦如是):모든 티끌도 이와 같음이네
무량원겁즉일념(無量遠劫卽一念):한 없이 긴 세월도 한 생각이고
일념즉시무량겁(一念卽是無量劫):순간의 한 생각도 끝없는 겁의 세월이다
(3)산신각, 독성각 주련
독성각에 나반존자를 모시는 것은 세계에서 우리나라가 유일하다. 그러므로 단군신앙에서 불교에 전파된듯하다.(육당 최남선)
초발심시편정각(初發心時便正覺):처음 마음을 낼 때가 바로 바른 깨달음이니
생사열반상공화(生死涅槃常共和):생사와 열반은 항상 함께 화합하네
이사명연무분별(理事冥然無分別):이성과 사리가 평등하여 분별할 수가 없네
(4)칠성각 주련
삼계유여급정륜(三界猶如汲井輪):삼계는 우물 두레박같이 돌고돌아
백천만겁역미진(百千萬劫歷微塵):백천만겁 세월을 겪은 작은 티끌이로다
차신불향금생도(此身不向今生度):이 몸이 이 생에서 제도하지 못한다면
갱대하생도차신(更待何生度此身):다시 어느 생을 기다려 제도할 것인가
(5)이곳 기도처는 수행을 열심히 하신 스님의 사리와 평생을 눕지않고 염불하신 노보살님의 생시에 치아에서 나온 사리를 이곳 바위에 봉안되었다고 전해진다.(It is said that the scared relics of a monk who practiced diligently and the scared relics of a dld Bodhisattva who never lay down and recited the Buddha's name all his life were enshrined in this rock.)
