The look on Uncle Stuart's face when Sharron asks him why he betrayed his brother and niece almost implies that he regrets what he's done but due to his jealousy for his brother he made a mistake thst would ultimately ruin his relationship with his niece and brother so I kind of wish they actually went more into Stuart's relationship with his brother.

The Ghost of Elias Kingston always looked very unsettling to me. Especially the animation when he turns Uncle Stuart into an old man, something about it always looked weirdly creepy to me.

I think that was the charm of the series, it may have scared us growing up - seriously the Creeper and that masked Witch Doctor from a Tikki Scare were in some of my nightmares, but it never stopped us from loving it. I think we were better off from watching these things because in the end we're not dealing with real ghost and monsters but some schmuck in costume who gets tripped up by a bunch of teenagers and their talking dog.

This is one of my favorite episodes of the first season. It has a genuinely spooky location, a unique villain, the comedy is well done and doesn't derail the episode, and there's actually a decent plotline. I see this episode as being a great blueprint for what makes a good Scooby Doo episode in general. I'd put this episode up with A Night of Fright is No Delight, The Backstage Rage, Which Witch is Which?, and A Clue for Scooby Doo as my favorite episodes of the show.
Edit: Can't forget Haunted House Hang-Up

It's one of those episodes that literally gave me nightmares because of the music and the aging thing. This and charlie the robot gave the creeps more than the Space Kook don't know why, maybe i saw Space Kook later in my childhood

This was one of my all time favorite episodes of Scooby Doo, but it's also one of the ones that genuinely gave me the creeps (hence why I loved it); the look of the ghost in general, with his huge yellow eyes that just stared at you with no blinking, the fact that uncle was agin rapidly, and then to top it all off, the scene where Shaggy says that he thinks he's found Uncle Stuart but a little older and then the next shot shows a skeleton!
Though, I think the part that always got me was when Stuart as an old man is in the shadows, and then all of a sudden the light turns on him and you see his face, and Scooby goes 'Ahh!' and the Uncle is just staring directly at the camera xD!

  • @seegecs1224

2:26 that scene always terrified me as a kid. I feel like the new versions of Scooby Doo focus on goofiness and jokes and lack such kind of scenes, which honestly, could make them better. The atmosphere is unmatched.

  • @schizoidboy

I have the feeling the inspiration for this episode was Dark Shadows, it had that kind of vibe with it's art direction and the ghost in it, he's like a character from the show. Incidentally they brought back Elias Kingston for the Be Cool Scooby Doo episode, where he's described as a ruthless unprincipled cad, who believed young people were America's greatest asset, hence he set up the college.

For years I’ve wondered when I would see the haunted mansion in the intro and after all these years I’ve finally got to see it when I rewatched all the episodes of Scooby-Doo Where Are You on HBO Max including the ones I’ve never seen before and also why Shaggy slipped on Roller Skates in the bathtub as a kid I saw these clips in the intro including Fred getting pulled behind a bookshelf but never understood the context until I saw the episodes they were actually in.

In Stuart Wetherby’s defense, I’m not sure a well thought out ghost extortion scheme would have worked any better. It’s hard to scare people into handing over their family fortunes.

One thing that always stumped me was how Uncle Stewart managed to make his neck wrinkly and thin. I understand using makeup and a wig to make himself old but there would be NO way he could make himself look thin in such a short time.

  • @KaijuCommander

I remember seeing this episode fairly often as a kid, so it stuck with me well enough, probably helps that Kingston's ghost and the mansion he "haunted" appears in the opening of each episode, but Kingston's design and the spookier atmosphere of the episode definitely stuck with me as a kid. I love it when Scooby-Doo leans more towards the spooky side of things, makes it a good way of introducing kids to tame but still eerie elements of horror before they're ready to level up to the real stuff >;3
I also like Kingston's setup, what with the movie makeup and camera tricks, ya gotta give him credit for trying such a brazen scheme, pretending that he himself had been cursed by the ghost he was masquerading as to steal the family fortune for himself, a much riskier con than simply running around trying to scare people away from his ill-gotten gains.

You're not the only one with trouble remembering this one episode Doc!
Over here in where I live (Argentina), we have this channel called Tooncast that is basically Boomerang but with other cancelled or ended Cartoon Network shows. And I never ever remember this episode airing! And I watched the channel on a regular basis.(Not as much now a day's) Maybe it was because they were airing other more well knowed episodes and they didn't air this on as frequently. Who knows... But after this video, I'm really interested in seeing this episode.
Well what can I say... You can't Say Boomerang without Boomer... :)

The ghost in this episode and aspects of the plot remind me a lot of Dark Shadows. The ghost looks basically like Barnabas Collins dyed blue, and whole two mansions and double crossing relative plot would've felt right at home on the original series, with the addition of some actual ghosts.

I had the same experience with this episode as well. I remember seeing it like once or twice when I was really young but whenever I would watch reruns of SDWAY on cartoon network years later, this episode was very rarely aired. It wasn't until I bought the SDWAY Complete 1st & 2nd season DVD collection that I was able to watch this episode again after so long. I even remember when I bought the DVD collection and looked at the episode listing & saw "What the Hex Going On?" my immediate reaction was "What is this episode? I don't think I've seen this one" lol.

I remember seeing this one during Scooby marathons but yeah it oddly never re-ran a whole lot. My only guess is the implied death scene was maybe seen as a bit much for day time Cartoon Network at the time (I remember day time airings of old Loony Tunes shorts tended to also edit out any scenes featuring characters attempting suicide by pointing guns at their heads, like that one short when a dog thinks it actually killed Bugs).
