Do you have the capability of adding 12 or 14 permanent inches to the ceiling of your van to allow you to stand up? This would eliminate the expansion unit that you currently have. I like what upgrades you are planning to do.
@@diannehall1534 hey I’m not Josiah, but I do know a little about this. There are high top conversions for Vanagons out there. While they are great in some ways they do have some downsides. They’re pretty pricey first of all. Just the fiberglass topper without labor for installation can be a few thousand dollars. And then typically you end up losing that top bed area that is handy for storing stuff when you get to camp as Josiah mentioned.
Had 2 1984-1990 VW Vanagon westy vans. Started off me and wife living the dream long before van life was a thing. Then plus 1 plus 2 kids. Small yes, tight yes, kids arguing yes. No A/C 110 degrees outside yep, no cruise control. Then got a newer one with A/C and cruise little better. Best time of our family's life kids talk about the epic trips and breakdowns of the van. Looking back would I change anything nope!
I wanted to bring my kids out to different places for the whole last summer, gosh, they were arguing and fighting nonstop. And they weren’t listening to my instructions!!! So exhausted… BUT want to to try again this summer 😂
Wonderful. Thanks for sharing. I've had enough of struggling in the Matrix. Might as well struggle in a better place.... Or... Even better... Don't struggle! So I'll be on the road by next summer. Early retirement with not enough money...and alive and relishing each day instead of dreading it and constantly wishing it was 5:00 or Friday. Love your van. I got a 95 Japanese Toyota HiAce and it's coming along nicely. See you out there !
I can't understand NOT wanting to go do van life at least for a while if you can. & I don't understand why people need to look sideways at someone who is embracing a different kind of life. I think almost everyone has something worth hearing. Josiah seems to be worth the time to listen.
You got a terrific rig, but I have 2 questions…… First, what kind of indoor plumbing do you have, besides the sink? Second, what’s the name of your travel companion? I’ll look you up and see the mods you’ve done to your Vanagon l. As a nomad it seems you have everything under control.
Hi I have a 82 also ( love it) I had some heavy duty struts put on the pop top/ have a Thule storage bin on top/. I am having a bear of a time closing it when open/ I notice your struts are backwards from mine/ is There reason for that? (maybe I need to reverse mine? thx
Nice van, nice guy. Really loved the fear quote, leather tool holders and the big Bluetooth speaker. Do you keep the speaker outside when it rains? Good tour, thanks!

That is the quote of the year, "All the good things in life are on the other side of fear."
It's a great quote, isn't it?
@@bdong21 it doesn't matter who may have said it first, it's still a great quote.

Thank you so much for the explanation.
Reminds me of our old burning man days and a dearly departed friend who rocked her vanagon "Heart of Gold" blessings
My wife and I absolutely loved a Escapar! Thanks @JosiahRoe!
This…may have just changed my life.

So am I, i want a van but cant afford it!
Always inspired by the idea. I bought a used SUV and will convert it to a weekending vehicle later.

Cool van and an even cooler guy. Love the outlook, and the words of wisdom. God bless…
You seem like a very happy man and that's what matters .. Nice Van !
This is just plain awesome! 💚
What a great guy!!!
10:30 the way the dog reactes when he says 'Loneliness was a thing'
Dude has a vibe that's uncommon in our society. Perhaps lack of debt and not answering to anyone/anything but his heart leads to this?

Nope! Hoping to get a rear locker in it soon
what chairs did you mention fit in the luggage rack?
Woww cull
Would like to see an update
Did he call his dog “Rona”? 😆 haha
I would prefer the original fridge instead of that humongous chest-fridge that takes up so much of what is already limited floorspace.
I've heard that replacing the original fridge with a trucker fridge is a great upgrade and uses less energy.
