    "You should have let him approach his parents on his own" WTF? This is not the case of a child being naughty and running off to a treehouse. This is a whole @$$ adult who chose to let his family think he was dead for how long? To get out of something that he chose to do?

    OP owed more to the parents than she did to the cheating boyfriend anyhow. What an awful thing to let your parents believe you are dead.

    The accusation that OP told the parents because she was sore at Austin for cheating on her and leaving her so financially screwed she had to pay a giant fine and move? Honestly even if that WAS why OP contacted the parents, I’d say it was a perfectly valid response.

    Let's look at this from a different angle. Anyone knowing that Austin was alive and hiding out, could be charged with something and spend time in jail/prison. I bet Ryan did some time over this. And OP needs better friends.

    Everyone who knew about his deserting could EASILY be charged with aiding and abetting

  • @m0L3ify
    @m0L3ify 10 месяцев назад +27

    She gave them the chance to come clean on their own terms when she set up the first phone call with the parents. When that failed, she finally told them the truth, as she should have. Those boys had months to come clean, an OP would probably have been putting herself in legal jeopardy if she'd known and stayed silent, because I'm pretty sure going AWOL is a crime. Definitely NTA.

    • @tabortoothtiger7580
      @tabortoothtiger7580 9 месяцев назад

      Yup. It's a federal crime. And he got himself into a lot of shit. Not only himself, but Ryan. Because Ryan clearly knew where he was, and lied about it to many people, including the government. Which is a big nono. These two idiots just screwed themselves over. Hope they have fun possibly dealing with the federal prison system.

    NTA. This man child was willing to let his own parents think he was DEAD. His PARENTS. He deserved to be outed. Desertion is terrible and letting people you love think you died is terrible. His friends awful for helping him do it.

    The police actually investigated for 6 months before, 'pulling back'...but not closing the case.
    So Austin and Ryan wasted over 6 months of police resources without a concern in the world.

    I'm not usually a jaw-dropping kind of person, but my jaw legit dropped at this story!! Absolutely NOT the a*hole. What that guy did to his parents is appalling, knowing how scared they were for all that time. I'm so disgusted by this guy.

    Not just NTA. Not even in the same ballpark. There are at least three federal crimes involved here plus the emotional damage being done.

      Oh, not to mention the wasted police resources and the fact that he went AWOL, which is a federal offense and can get him into a LOT of trouble, alongside anybody that knew where he was and didn't say anything: *cough cough* Ryan. He wasted a lot of people's time and money. Time and money that could have gone to an actual important and serious issue, as in, someone who is actually missing and needs help. What a jackass.

    Sounds like Austin doesn't have the ability to think...... Just generally. He had what seems like a good life but he threw it away by cheating. He ran away from that leaveing op to clean up the mess. Then he ran from his method of running leaving way more people to clean up after him to then probably getting every one that knew he was OK in trouble and probably ruining his relationship with his parents. Op dodged a bullet on this one. Austin is extremely immature and let's the consequences of his oun actions snowball out of control, taking every one down with him. Zero common sense, critical thinking skills or thought for other people.

  • @LLynneM
    @LLynneM 10 месяцев назад +10

    NTA. OBV ur friend isn’t a parent. Anyone who’s loved a child, who’d give their own life so their child could live, who’s _rather_ die than live a life w/o them, would NEVER think u were wrong to end their suffering. Friend basically thought Austin’s wasn’t a AH. Hopefully that one is also long gone.
    *How did Ryan get out of the whole thing tho? He joined w/him and was busted w/him so… ?* Did they end up a couple or something? Seems sus that they both joined and quit at the same time and were together in the aftermath too.

    OP Dusty hit on something, so he was riding around town with his best friend and no one knew, what was he doing for money, where was he living at? I'm betting that all of the friends knew and covering for him. They "friend" that told you that you should have let him approach his parents when he was ready, well I'm betting they knew all the time that he was there and that was the lie he told everyone, also told them not to tell you.
    Drop all those people you can see they are not your friends. And you dodge bullets with this one as he would have lord to you too about being dead and let you worry.

    Why would he join if he didn’t want to be deployed? I thought deployment was a given after a certain amount of training. And, although I’ve no real knowledge about any military things, I thought desertion was a crime that they don’t take lightly.

    • @TheBlkKat
      @TheBlkKat 10 месяцев назад +5

      They don't. Especially for a deployment overseas. This dude just deciding he wasn't gonna go screws up so much, it's a massive chain reaction. His buddy Ryan likely got busted, too, for helping. Assuming OP would have mentioned his court martial as well if it happened, I am going to suspect Ryan received some non-judicial punishment (loss of rank, loss of pay, extra duty, some combination of the three if not all).

    • @LessaCaira
      @LessaCaira 10 месяцев назад +3

      @@TheBlkKat It's also possible since Ryan joined at the same time but wasn't set to deploy, that Ryan flunked out of basic.

    • @TheBlkKat
      @TheBlkKat 10 месяцев назад

      @@LessaCaira If they both got orders to the same unit but, yea, very well possible. If Ryan got the same unit then it is also possible Ryan was placed on Rear D.

    Not only is she NTA for informing the parents, I feel like legally there had to be some kind of obligation to turn him in, right? Like dude's gone AWOL in the army, if you're found hiding someone like that wouldn't it blow back on you? Aiding and abetting a criminal? Or something? If it were me, I would feel legally obligated to inform SOMEBODY--so why NOT the parents first?

    • @tabortoothtiger7580
      @tabortoothtiger7580 9 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, it would blowback on you. Whether it's legal or civil punishment, it would indeed cause massive issues for anybody who knew and didn't say anything. Going AWOL is a very bad thing to do. Had OP not said anything, she would also be facing punishment. Ryan, being a dumbass, is probably facing some shitty shit for aiding and housing someone going AWOL. Worst case scenario for Austin, is prison. Which, no matter the time, won't look good on any future endeavors. That, not to mention the amount of trouble he'd get into with the police. He wasted their resources and time. Sherri Papini is a good example of what happens when you do that.

    I am genuinely hoping this is fake... because if it isn't this "friend" could actually be out in the world breeding. How fucking dare you call her bitter when she had absolutely no stake in this. This piece of human garbage got caught cheating and FAKED HIS OWN DEATH so he would escape the consequences of being a pathetic, cheating, piece of shit. 8 fucking months. Honestly, for me anyways, isn't nearly half as bad as that so called "friend". Ryan did lie, manipulate and cover up for his friend, all terrible things. Not nearly half as bad or harmful as victim blaming. The fact that OP felt the need to post abt this is just sad. 8 months of turmoil for the parents and probably also OP who didn't get any closure and that "friend" calls her bitter. She told the parents he was alive not run him off the road. OP and these parents deserve so much more honestly.
