To be fair, Wii U’s gpu is at least the same level as 360 and ps3’s, probably even better due to more advanced features supported. And also, for a 2015 game, the lighting model xbx used was dated (especially compared to the full pbr materials in Mario games)
I guess it’s astonishing because no dev tried to make a game primarily for the Wii U of such a big scale before.

Another buff added by lack of collision, with enemies specifically, is that unless they use an attack that physically knocks you back, they can't just push you around with their bodies. In Xenoblade 1, if you were fighting an enemy near a bottomless pit, you had to be super careful cause the bigger ones could just decide to use an attack with a big fancy animation that could push you off the edge and send you hurtling to your doom even if it wasn't targeting you.

Nice video. I had to laugh though when I heard you say that "the lack of camera bob means that it doesn't quite feel natural." This is an example of how stylistic choices in movies and games has caused people to lose perspective on reality. Do an experiment. Next time your walking around, see if the world is bobbing around or if it's actually almost perfectly smooth. And for kicks run around and guess what? You'll notice it doesn't really bob then either. Humans are designed with an incredible system that eliminates such craziness. Otherwise we'd be falling down all over the place or getting dizzy. That's why it drives me crazy when I see movies using the so-called "shaky camera" method to add "realism" because it's actually anything but realistic.
Thanks for doing this video. I've been analyzing this game and having this information is very helpful as well.

  • @SuppleAloe64

Having played through both this game and Xenoblade Chronicles 2, I find that I still prefer the graphical fidelity of this game over XC2, despite XC2’s use of the same base engine with incremental improvements. Maybe (probably) if Monolith had put similar resources towards XC2’s backend as they did when making this game I’d be singing a different tune, but as it stands I find the terrain pop-in (especially the grass) in XC2 to be significantly more jarring and distracting than the terrain pop-in in XCX, with the sole exception of the very first area in XC2’s Torna DLC.
I think it could be interesting to see a side-by-side comparison of the differences between the two games’ rendering backends and the stylistic techniques used to minimize the impact of rendering imperfections. It seems to me like XCX might still do some things better than its technological successor.

      @CDL_Gaming 4 года назад +3

I agree, but I think XC2 was more limited by Switch's hardware, specifically with Switch's Handheld mode, which led to some caveats visually to keep performance stable in Handheld. The game has to look good at a smaller resolution in Handheld while running with similar performance as Docked mode, while also trying to maintain the team's vision of more animated and detailed character models and environments with a different art style, all while on a similar engine for hardware that runs surprisingly similarly to the last-gen hardware. Switch has 400-500 Gigaflops of GPU memory and Wii U has about 350 Gigaflops (.4-.5/.35 Teraflops respectively, to compare to numbers used by more modern consoles). They definitely had their work cut out for them, putting a new game on new hardware with similar specs as the old hardware while also trying to improve the look of the game without sacrificing performance for a 70+ hour game with twice as many unique locations, all within a 3 years, as XC to XCX was 5 years. I'm honestly surprised XC2 came out looking and performing as good as it did, all things considered.
Personally, I see XC2 as a step back from XCX, but XCX was such a major departure from XC in both ambition and art style, so I try not to compare them too much. I see XC2 as more of an upgrade to XC on Wii, and XCX as its own separate entity. I do wish they'd put out a port to Switch, though. Maybe with the rumored "Switch Pro/4k Switch" thing we'll see a proper remaster. Assuming the rumors are true.

Why Xdrones and Sony Zombies don't like this game:
    - It has no microtransaction
    - The framerate is too consistent, no obvious framedrops
    - Nintendo has the gameplay > graphics vision
    - Online is for free
    - It is bigger than the Witcher 3, Fallout 4
    - Too much content, too many hours
    - It is yet another better exclusive than their consoles have to offer

Picked the game up ages ago, only just no actually digging in and playing it through in June 2020. And in a sense it's striking both how good it looks and performs compared to my typical Switch fair. Like Zelda, Fortnite, and Dauntless are all so much more muted in texture detail. And it shows I don't play a lot of demanding games. Doom 2016 for the Switch looks amazing and like nothing else. And yet Xenoblade Chronicles X here is still blowing my socks off because I don't go for a lot of the high end games. Also interesting to see that despite there being no Mii support anymore, the base online aspects of the game still work and it feels like there's a set of people still playing it judging by achievement popups in my Lifehold Squad. XBCX holds up well, short load times, big areas. I wish the quest design was a little more balanced. But overall it's a good game, and surprised to not see a Switch port announced yet.

xenoblade X is what gaming is about. it knows what it wants to be, and does an excellent job. Of course I do still have some gripes with it, like it being really tough to find where all the recruitable party members are. A simple screen I could go to and swap them in and out at the barracks would have been nice. Also a better way to keep track of where found items are at. Some quests are like "go gather this thing", but that's so vague. The world is so huge I can't remember where I found every little item. my biggest gripe is it just screems multiplayer. it would have been nice if up to 3 friends could enter and explore your world with you. Maybe that wouldn't have been possible though, I don't know what it would have taken to do it. I actually got my friend to buy the game because I told her we could. I thought we could too, the game doesn't really make it clear exactly what we can do together. I thought the recruitment panel was for other players, but its just for NPC versions of them. All in all though this is a solid 9/10. it would have been a perfect 10 if my first 2 issues were resolved, having to looking up that info online takes away from the game. its a shame too because theres a pretty in depth bestiary and all that.

Personally I think the performance felt incredibly stable and the game looked freaking amazing. Even today it might be the most amazing open-world I ever have seen even today. Note that this game also has a fully open-world just like breath of the wild.
It also sorts of surprising to me that digital foundry don't compare SSD performance from external HHD performance, if you are using texture packs or not have an impact etc.
For example, the main selling point for the PS5 and Xbox Series X is that an SSD drive is much much better for open-world games.

+SirPuggsly What? This is way more ambitious than the entire AssCreed franchise combined.

I do hope monolift soft move onto porting this now. They have done a great job with xenoblade chronicles definitive edition and a similar or greater effort into porting this would be fantastic.
Greatet draw distances, resolution bump, locked 30fps (if 60 then would be even better). Keep the art/visual style as is though.
