    As someone who's been through this type of thing before, I personally didn't see it as glorifying, it was honestly just awareness which is nothing but good for people who are struggling

      Mirza Exactly. If only these parents put in as much effort into stopping real life bullying at their children’s schools as they are complaining about a tv show demonstrating examples of what happens

      I don’t understand how it’s glorified, the things she went to and the way she felt is something no one wants to feel, it’s a lonely and sad time, if anyone saw the scene of the actual suicide then they’ll see it’s not glorified, it’s the raw truth and people don’t want to see it

    As someone who had almost attempted suicide, 13 reasons why was very real to me. It made me thankful that I didn't end up making the same decision. If anything it's a deterrent, not a "reason why". It shows how much life Hannah still had left in her that she took away. How many people really actually did care about her or ended up realizing their mistakes in the end. It shows how hard it is to juggle so much at once and how alone and isolating it all is. I've been there. I was Hannah. My story could have ended the same way but it didn't. This show placed so much focus on taking responsibility, being more empathetic, and really emphasizing on connecting to other people rather than push them away because of your own issues. It started a REAL dialogue about suicide and honestly I could have used a show like this when I was in high school.

    Romeo and Juliet glorifies suicide and it’s a mandatory school read throughout the US in high school. 13 reasons why does NOT glorify suicide. They just didn’t sugarcoat it. I think they did a FANTASTIC job w the issue of depression and suicide and showing the reality of it.

    • @xXkikibabiXx
      @xXkikibabiXx 6 лет назад +57

      In the show it was a lot more that led Hannah to suicide than “a note being taking out of comment bag”. Hannah was raped, betrayed by friends, suffering depression was alone and bullied. Teenagers commit suicide often because of things like that. @tandi guo

    First off coming from someone who was sucidal and at a really low point for all my school years...this was not glorifying suicide...I didn’t take it as that. Do people realize this show is probably the closest thing I’ve ever seen that was honest and realistic...people are brutal and so are words and this shit goes on all the time and teachers and people just sit back and watch...they don’t give a shit until someone dies. And that’s the honest truth. It’s sucks that she died but suicides happen all the time. I felt like the show was eye opening...that maybe the people who are the ones hurting people need to realize we all have our issues and that we need to be careful on what we say and how we treat people...this is reality and people like to live with their eyes blindfolded. There are many times I was hurting and people didn’t care they would still say the most horrible things to me...95% of teachers don’t really care but there are 5% that do. I think it’s a great show to bring awareness to students teachers everyone. People need to stop and realize we all go through shit and we need to be more loving and compassion for each other...why not go up to the person sitting alone at lunch and sit with them...why not call a girl beautiful who has eating issues or self image issues...instead we bash make fun of or walk on by...I stand by 13 reasons why and if people are saying it’s causing suicides maybe those people should see how they have treated the person that took their own life and take responsibility and not blame it on a Netflix series !!!

      This is probably what also caused the Parkland shooting, I’m in no way sympathizing w/ the shooter but I do believe that we aren’t completely evil by nature and some kind of bullying happened to the kid to provoke what he did! People have to be nice to each other.

      Lorraine Rachel as someone who has tried to commit suicide three times, I saw this as nothing but an attention grab at glorifying a REAL mental illness. Seeing kids in my school claim how much they love this show but go right back to being bullies to people who are slightly different makes it absolutely foolish. I wish this show never aired.

      I think the problem is that the show makes suicide seem like a great/effective way to get back at everyone who has hurt you in life. It gives kids the message "if you commit suicide, then everyone will know how they hurt you and they will feel sorry about it"

    I was suicidal and watched 13 Reasons Why. I had my death planned out and everything. Watching it saved my life, and I owe them everything for that. It showed me that if I left, everyone who loved me wouldn't be happy. I would have left a scar on their life forever. I sincerely thank the author, Jay Asher, I didn't think much of it when I read it, but seeing real actors act out the book that kept me barely moving everyday, that has changed my life.

      yep. people can't handle the real life issues such as bullying and rape. they want the media to tell them everything is going great. they need the media to tell them that a bullied person who got ostracized and raped won't feel suicidal so they don't have to be responsibled as a society. everyone should be strong on their own, doesn't matter what happen to them. why can't people just let us live in this delusional safe wrapped bubble where everything is fine, no one is suffering etc.

    This show gives kids a chance to talk about many different things that aren't ever spoken about in the real world that our children are faced with on a daily basis. We as parents have to be diligent about knowing what our children can comprehend and how much they can learn about before they are going to be overwhelmed by the information they are offering. So often parents are uncomfortable with talking to their children about these types of things that still occur in our kids life. Because of this, the kids will feel like their parents are not going to be there for them, or they'll never be able to understand what is going on with their life, or that they are on their own. Even worse is when they actually do have a mental health issue that they don't fully understand and the parents are not educated about what they need to look for in their own children or what the warning symptoms are to identify if these children are having problems in their own personal life that can and usually does result in serious health problems or even worse, death. They are incredibly brave to try and educate their audience on this matter especially when everyone believes that their children are actually educated on this subject when in actuality too many children do not have any access to real, truthful, adequate information even though this is not a true story. It's still appealing to many people who prefer to not have a factual lecture on suicide and would rather have something that could possibly relate to their own lives as well as keeping their attention during the show.

      Charlotte Lynch Thank you so much! I'm so used to immediately being called "crazy" or that what I think is a so called "imaginary perfect world that is never going to exist" so why do I bother saying "what I think people would benefit from hearing about". My answer is because I have lived in a world that had most of the things that I am talking about now and I fully believe that we are more than capable of making this happen nowadays if we just simply work with each other instead of trying to insult, hurt, or label everyone that is slightly different than what we want them to be!

    About 90% of people who commit suicide have a mental illness. Mental illness was not mentioned once in the show. I believe they were glorifying suicide in a way that is usually not the case for most people. Most of us have all gone through bullying, abuses, and our demons, and more than half of those people did not believe suicide to be the way out, unless it affected them mentally. The show does NOTHING to inform the viewer of mental illness, only about bullying. So when an immature kid watches, and they’re getting bullied in school, they could possibly believe that suicide is the answer for them too because they are too young to understand the underlying reasons that were never fucking mentioned. Also, after Hannah dies, her “bullies” start to change and feel bad. What is that telling children? That if you leave, the people who hurt you will feel bad? No. Life will go on. I have lost someone close to suicide, who suffered from mental illness so it really hits home for me. The show should have shifted its focus. I will not be watching nor recommending this bullshit to anyone. And no, it’s not me being “sensitive.” I could understand that it could start discussions amongst parents and children, but it wasn’t done in the right way, idc what anyone says. With a better focus on mental illness perhaps interviewing those will mental illness and seeing how it really feels, it would of been a perfect show.

    I personally hate all of the comments saying how this was the "most realistic depiction of depression," because, trust me, it's far from it. The main reason is, it isn't a story about a depressed girl: it's a story about revenge. They don't delve into Hannah's depression, they don't delve into her suicidal thoughts, they just play some cliche "bullying" scenes and then show her slitting her wrists. Most people with depression dont go through the stereotypical tramatic events, its just chemicals in their brain making them hate themselves. The show showed the "hey i think im depressed" depression. That's not depression. Depression is not wanting to get out of bed in the morning because of how long the day is going to be. Depression is making yourself get out of bed because you made obligations with people. Depression is cancelling those plans last minute because you can't work up the courage to talk to people you used to like or do activities you used to love. Depression is feeling the need to hurt yourself because you are just so pissed off at how useless you feel and know that you need to be punished. Depression is hating yourself afterwards because you know that self harm is wrong. Depression is blaming yourself for not being strong enough. Depression is wanting to apologize to everyone for ruining everything, even though you haven't. That's depression, but that's not what the show depicted. I guess real depression doesn't get good ratings. But stupid revenge plots where the protagonist is unlikable and selfish apparently is REALLY good for ratings, so whatever floats your boat.

      I know I’m late but Hannah blamed herself for rejecting clay. She said she wasn’t good enough for him and that she felt worthless, how he deserved more than her etc. I’ve been through some of the stuff in Hannah’s life and when she got raped she blamed herself for going to the party.
      However, I understand where you’re coming from and how the writers didn’t show a lot of Hannah’s true emotions but in season 2 it gave a whole other image and perspective on each person on the tapes.

      If someone is mentally unstable or even just in a bad place, this show might look like a good way to get revenge because the characters all feel bad for hannah at the end and to a suicidal person that looks appealing because right now noone might notice them but suicide would give them attention. It's hard for you and me to understand cuz we aren't like that, but that's how they think.

      I don't speak for all suicidal people but I've been suicidal before and I personally have known other suicidal people and none of us ever thought to commit suicide for attention. When you think of commiting suicide, you consider it because you believe the people in your life are better off without you. That, or you really have nothing left to live for. Doing it because you think you'll get attention after is the least likely reason. As far as I know, no suicidal person hopes to be on the news or the talk among town as "the girl/boy who killed herself". You really think you're contributing to society by eliminating something hopeless and bothersome--yourself.
      I used to cut myself when I was suicidal but I never did it for attention. I did it to "feel" something. Because when you have severe depression you are just so empty inside and the pain of cutting makes you feel alive again if only for a brief moment. Many suicidal people hide their scars with sleeves. If they wanted to do it for attention, they wouldn't try to hide it or lie about it when someone asks what they are. In fact, even suicidal people feel embarrassed by their scars like its a reminder of "oh look how weak I am to resort to this" But again, I'm just speaking from personal experience and from other suicidal people I know. Everyone has their own reasons.
      If you know anyone who is suicidal, please talk to them. They may try to deny it or joke it off but pay close attention to the signs and talk to them.

    Lots of people saying they've experienced suicidality and don't see it as glorifying. Just to put it out there: as someone who has just been discharged out of psych ward for these issues, I 100% think it romanticises suicide and makes it appear immortalising and beautifully tragic and mysterious. It adds to an already dangerous online culture of romanticisation of mental illnesses and turns suicidality into a fashionable current quirk. Deaths have taken place mimicking content in this show. Multiple deaths. Even 1 death is too high a price to pay. Producers ignored advice specifically from suicide prevention organisations against showing an explicit suicide scene but they went ahead and did so anyway BECAUSE SHOCK SELLS. I find that dangerous and exploitative. Dear Selena Gomez, stop selling and profiting off my illness. These warnings are definitely a step in the right direction, but cannot possibly undo the damage already done.

      Hardly Selena's fault/any executive producer's fault as they didn't have much creative control over this show. The writer for the suicide scene has written an article defending his reasons for leaving it here and it was because he attempted suicide (ODed) and it was really gruesome and painful and he felt that people needed to see the scene in full to understand that suicide looks like that, not a pretty girl lying peacefully in her bathroom. I don't agree with him but I can definitely see his perspective. It did help many people as well as triggered others. I don't think it's charitable to say that he, a survivor, is trying to exploit the cause.

    I am an adult. I bought the book from a thrift store and wondered what all the hoop la was about, So I read it. I thought it was brilliant. I think it's a good idea to not make suicide tabu, like it was when I was a teenager. I couldn't talk to my parents about my suicidal feelings; they wouldn't have cared. I swallowed a full bottle of aspirin when I was 13 years old. I obviously didn't die, but became very sick. I told my Mom what I had done and that I was feeling sick. She told me "well, that's what you get". I finally started getting professional therapy when I got married, years later. I hope this book and show helps those who don't know how to ask for help, get lifesaving help.

    I enjoyed watching the first season. I always wanted to find out more of Hannah’s story. I had strong feelings for the characters and what they were going through. But at the same time, I can’t see how this show is supposed to help young people who have these feelings or have dealt with these topics. Some characters would abuse alcohol to deal with their issues and not go to a counselor or tell anyone what was going on in their lives. Th only one who tried to talk and go to counseling, ended up taking her own life. So I’m not sure how this is trying to help others, but the only thing I learned from this season is that you need to make sure you let people know they matter before it’s too late.

    Inside the show when the main character tells the school councilor she doesn't want to exist (I don't remember the exact lines but it was something very very suicidal sounding). Right then and there any school professional would be calling someone to get the student escorted to a hospital to be mentally evaluated. There's a lot of other fucked up harmful uneducated parts to this show but this part alone should be enough. It directly makes a watcher feel like they won't be taken seriously if they bring their suicidal thoughts to an adult. A watcher should have felt the opposite and it should have been made clear that you need to come to adults when your feeling suicidal.

    • @FarrenDowning
      @FarrenDowning 6 лет назад +15

      Marlena Kathleen interesting, when I seen that part it made me think that professionals or even others who someone talks to should take what they say seriously and not just brush it under a rug. Maybe you're the only one who listens, maybe you'll be the only one who they tell so you need to listen and support them. Get them the help they need from the right professionals.
      I didn't think of it as that if you're suicidal, people won't listen and won't help. I interpreted it more as there are faults in the system that need to be addressed.

      The thing is that there have been cases where a school has known about severe incidents like the ones in this show (particularly the bullying and sexual assault), but haven't wanted to do anything about it, because they have a reputation to uphold as being a place where something like that doesn't happen. Their logic is that if they ignore it then it doesn't exist. Believe it or not, it does happen. I was bullied through primary school, and the school did absolutely nothing about it, even going so far as to protect the bully, so yeah, I found the part with the counselor particularly relatable.

      I think it highlights all the things that can go wrong, that’s why. When you’re suicidal, depressed etc. you always think about “worse case scenario”. What if I’m not taken seriously? What if I wasn’t here anymore, how many would actually care? Or I wish I could make a statement about my suicide because I want other people to know their place in it, to be held responsible for how they made me feel... I want them to feel guilty. The “I also hate myself, I’d be better off, everyone would be.” “She did it for attention”, she was weak and couldn’t handle it... etc. These are all thoughts (in one form or another) ppl who are suicidal or depressed feel. Thoughts that peoplel think about it.

      I'm not sensitive, and I still think it sucked. It's completely unrealistic.
      The characters in the show either have only redeeming qualities or none at all, we as an audience are forced to hate these people and not create our own judgement on the characters. They have absolutely no personality outside of them being an asshole. There's also many plot holes about the character's motivation for doing things, like the guy that was stalking Hannah and taking pictures. It's never really explained why he does these things.
      Hannah's tapes were just there for the "retro is cool now" aesthetic. No one in real life would record hours of their own voice, have it sent to other peoples houses and kill themselves. A written note would be more common.
      It didn't show the sorrow her death caused, it showed the people that were around her feel guilty for her death when they shouldn't be. They were not responsible for her death, Hannah was, she made that choice.
      I honestly expected Hannah to be a more complex character and give us a rare insight to what someone suicidal is like, but like all the other characters, she's lazily written. The show just shows her overreacting to small things and under reacting to things that no one should experience.
      Also the parents in the show weren't doing any parenting. Some were assholes and some were just neglectful. Some people would make the argument that Hannah pushed hers away, but the fact is that her parents saw something wrong and didn't think to ask their child "what's wrong?"

    I don’t think there are bad intentions behind the show, but there was certainly a significant level of ignorance with how the first season was handled. I mean the fact is the show triggered many people, mostly teens, to have suicidal thoughts or to consider following through with suicide more seriously. That’s not debatable, that’s what happened.
    And I personally think that reaction would have been easily predicted by most professionals with experience in that area of mental health, so it was disappointing to see how shocked they were at the backlash.
    Still though kudos to them for acknowledging the issue and taking some steps to address it.

      I get that they are trying to show that people should be more compassionate but the show overall comes off (to a depressed person only) as "You have no hope. No one cares about you when you're alive. Take your life, then people will think about you." It would have been better if the high school characters in the show were taught a lesson after hannah eventually and gradually comes out with the truth (to her therapist perhaps?) and hannah eventually becomes alright. It sounds like a "happily ever after story" but it would give some sort of hope to people going through this to stay strong and could also teach the viewers watching this hannah's struggle and pain. Well I get that it won't happen because it was based off a book but I don't know this is just my opinion. But please try to express your opinion without sounding angry. That is what I call immature. ( sorry xD)

    This TV series was the closest thing to realistic, a lot of adults do not understand what goes on at school, the teachers at school BARELY do anything to stop bullying. This is coming from a person who was bullied and was suicidal. Yes, teachers tell us that bullying is bad, if you're being bullied talk to a trusted adult, sometimes they'll think we're being silly, or they handled the problem wrong. Thats why most of us don't speak up. This show is eye opening, it showed many people what happens at school, what teachers do, students will lie, students handle the problems themselves. Teachers won't care until someone is dead or injured. All they do is talk to us to try and talk it out and they try to find a solution, they tell us don't ever let this happen again then case closed.
    This show has no intention to make us harm ourselves, This show is trying to give a message to teens and adults, it's trying to make us realize that what goes on in school isn't child's play. Think about school, teens, and bullying, teens can basically do anything to try and harm another teen. Hell a Teenager was a shooter at a school. Again this show is trying to open up our eyes, and make us realize that bullying is not a damn game, when you're making fun of someone you might think it's funny, but when you're the victim and you hear every insult they tell you, it starts to get to you to the point where you feel that you're worth nothing, to the point where you don't want to hear it anymore, to the point where you want to harm yourself. So please this show is just showing what happens at school, this show might even be someone's life right now and you don't even know it.

Even when you try to do the polite and right thing like walk away.Bullies won't let you they want and enjoy your suffering.Please continue to stay strong💪!I also want people to know work place bullying is just as real and vile as school bullying.It happens everyday at every kind of job.We as a society need to be better.Stop gossiping and fighting with eachother.You don't have to like everybody but keep your rude and cruel words to yourself.No body deserve that.

    I love seeing everyone's different opinions on the show. I watched it after learning about it and it opened the door for my 13 year old and I to sit down and have a very serious conversation about suicide and self harm. It really blew my mind how mentally mature my daughter was at approaching this subject. Parent...don't be afraid to talk to your children...and children, don't be afraid to talk to your parents. It's a very serious issue that needs to be recognized openly so those suffering do NOT feel alone.

    This disclaimer fails to tackle one major issue: The show portrays suicide as a potentially vengeful act. Suicidal people would *never* seek to get revenge on others by way of a suicide. The notion that a suicidal person would even be thinking of this in their final moments is fucked up. I believe that the viewers who aren't struggling with mental health issues themselves will watch this show and be taught that suicidal people are whiny and attenion-seeking (which is inaccurate).

    I’m glad because it did glamorize suicide. In the show Hannah essentially gets revenge and everyone who ever treated her wrong is ridden with guilt. This shows people who are suicidal or being bullied that ending your life can finally give you revenge on anyone who has ever mistreated you by making them feel ashamed. And that’s not the right answer so I’m glad they are addressing that.

    • @Mari-il4bw
      @Mari-il4bw 6 лет назад +3

      DylanDK Bradley I don’t agree. Yes her family was sad and her classmates. However, why did she feel the need to make these tapes and single out different people who wronged her? That’s basically saying “This is what you did and you’re the reason I’m dead and I hope you have a guilty conscience for the rest of your life as payback.” I think she saw suicide as payback and that’s what motivated her to do it which is not why anyone should take their own life.

    • @SpottedLeafy
      @SpottedLeafy 6 лет назад

      Ah, but there is a difference between that, and the whole suicide being what some people are deeming a revenge suicide. Her purpose in committing the suicide itself was not revenge, it was her inability to deal with the events that had happened to her, and her feeling of isolation in trying to deal with these things, all on top of what was likely depression. The tapes however, are a completely different kettle of fish, there is a valid argument that they were solely for revenge, and that would be an argument that I would be inclined to agree with. It still doesn't make the suicide itself centered on revenge.

    • @Mari-il4bw
      @Mari-il4bw 6 лет назад +1

      SpottedLeafy Yeah I think everything she went through definitely were factors that drove her to suicide. However, if revenge were not a factor at all then she would not have made the tapes. Honestly the fact that she made them so that everyone would feel guilty made it hard for me to empathize with her character and like her.

    • @SpottedLeafy
      @SpottedLeafy 6 лет назад +2

      I didn't like her as a character either, especially regarding those earlier tapes and episodes. I thought she was rather petty. I think there are different ways of looking at the suicide and the tapes, and their relationship. The way I saw the situation was that Hannah was going to have committed the suicide, tapes or not. Therefore, while I can see the tapes as being solely for revenge (though I think there might be something a little more complex here too), I can't see the suicide as being revenge based (even if by the time she thought of the tapes, she hadn't thought of killing herself). The way I saw it anyway, was that she had already decided to kill herself when she even came up with the idea of the tapes, hence making revenge more of an afterthought than a driving factor. But I can see how there may be a few ways to interpret it.
      Though my question with this new warning is, why wasn't the fact that they actually put warnings at the start of the more disturbing episodes (all of the last few), along with its rating (here in Australia, it's MA15+) enough for people? At what point is it fair to stop blaming the show, and start questioning why parents are allowing their kids to watch it in the first place? There are plenty of shows out there that are completely unsuitable for the age group we are talking about here, but none of them are getting the same attention as this one. Is it because we are that uncomfortable discussing this topic? As for the glorifying of the suicide itself, I certainly didn't see it that way, nor did majority of my age group (early 20s). I think it was the actual suicide scene itself that really shattered this idea. I could barely watch the scene, and I'm not generally squeamish or anything, it actually made me really, really uncomfortable, and I think a majority of people would agree with me there. Sure there are going to be a few people who think that by mimicking this, they might get their 15 minutes of fame, but it's certainly not the majority, definitely not to the extent people are implying, and it would be the same, no matter how this subject was broached.

    If anything, I felt less alone because someone else had to experience what I did to have enough understanding to make her seem so REAL. I also felt it was a great wake up call for those NOT struggling. They need to know how deep despair can go, and what signs to watch for, and even the possible consequences of their own actions toward others.

    Before everyone comes and says that people are just sensitive, and the show opens up new conversations and such, know this:
    While the show may be a catalyst for healthy conversations, for the most part, it goes about this the wrong way. The Nation Suicide Prevention has set down a list of ways to portray suicide in a way that does not glamorize it. The shows breaks many of these rules, such as not explicitly detailing the method of the act, and not showing the character after he/she has killed himself/herself.

      I understand where you're coming from having read some of those guidelines myself, and based on that you do have a point, but the definition of glamorizing is to make something seem desirable.
      If they'd gone with the method of suicide Hannah chooses in the book and shown that in graphic detail then I'd agree with you wholeheartedly because that would look too peaceful and perfect and for someone struggling that could seem desirable, but I feel that the choice to change the suicide method and to show it in such harrowing detail such as her physical pain, her mother's reaction and the muted colours makes it seem entirely undesirable, ergo that would not be glamorizing.
      I don't wish to dismiss your feelings or opinion on this, I just wanted to voice my own.

It's easy for someone who has never dealt with depression or being actively suicidal to say that the people affected by this show "aren't mature enough" or are "too sensitive," but showing a girl dying after cutting her wrists is extremely psychologically damaging for people with actual issues.
    a lot of you in the comment section coming from a place of ignorance and are assuming that every person who watched the show has the exact same mental health that you have. saying that people with suicidal depression are "too sensitive" is perpetuating the same message that this show was trying to subvert.

    I think it’s glorifying suicide because it shows that Hannah didn’t have any other choices. She could have talked to her parents, clay , and even a counselor. I understand the things that happened to her are horrible and I wish that upon no one but she had many choices and the show was trying to portray it as though she didn’t and was completely alone and no one cared for her but that’s far from it. If they actually paid attention to what they were told not to do in this show by multiple mental health professionals, this show likely wouldn't have gotten nearly as much backlash. They were advised not to actually depict the suicide, which they not only did, but they also proceeded to make it particularly graphic. I can't remember everything that they were told not to do, but they basically did all of them and that show caused so many people to relapse, even those who read the book with no problem and knew (or thought they knew) what they were in for. Aside from all that, from what I've seen, the writing just seems really weak. The characters are bland and underdeveloped and I don't really get why the show is so popular.
    I really hope Season 2 either doesn't do well or is just the last season anyway.
    Yes, these things need to be brought to light and discussed, but do it in a way that doesn't prevent people with these problems from watching the show and participating in said discussion. What good is starting a dialogue without making space for the people living with these issues?
    And when you're tackling suicide and rape and you're told by professionals, whose speciality is dealing with those exact things, how not to handle them in your show then maybe you should fucking DO WHAT THEY SAY.

      KOSMOSandTELOS Yeah. I just feel like the book was so great and then the show just was a let down. And I didn't actually think they would have depicted the sucide the way they did especially since in the book I'm pretty sure she had overdosed. The suicide was a little much.

    • @Missmurder8905
      @Missmurder8905 6 лет назад

      KOSMOSandTELOS I (as someone who’s been suicidal and suffers from depression) I can’t buy the whole “the show made me relapse”, I just think it’s an excuse for lack of self control or to act out how they’ve been feeling because they have the urge to. I get that things could be triggering but that’s where you have to not put yourself in those situations. If you are suicidal or have depression and it’s harder for you to deal with maybe, you shouldn’t watch a show about those issues, especially if it’s going o compel those thoughts. And this is coming from someone who’s last “incident” was about 4 months ago.
      A show doesn’t make me do anything to myself, I do that or factors in my life do. And I’m not going to make excuses for it.what happens is I (have anxiety and ptsd as well as ADHD and Bipolar 1) have panic attacks (and they come in all forms) and often I’m not in my right mind and hurt myself or have destructive thought patterns. But there has to (usually) be a DIRECT cause, not and indirect cause like a show. It’s not that simple and I think everyone wants it to be, because it’s such a hard topic to talk about or bring attention to. It’s easier to say “it’s the shows fault” than take any real responsibility on any part of the spectrum.

    • @Shmurph
      @Shmurph 6 лет назад

      Relapse was a poor choice of words, I'll admit that.
      But I'm sure you know that depression doesn't affect everyone the exact same way. Just because you experience it a certain way, doesn't mean every person with depression does. Just because something happening in a TV show isn't enough for *you* to have a panic attack (and possible mental breakdown), doesn't mean it can't happen to someone else. Your experience is the only one you can actually speak on. There isn't only one way for depression to work.
      Also, blame for a lot of the reactions people had to the show *is* the fault of the people behind it, and by extension the show itself. Because not only were they told exactly what not to do with the show by mental health professionals, but the book already told this story in a way that didn't cause such damage that the show did.

    • @undrielgrenger53

      How about triggered people just don't watch it, hmm? But I guess not, because then, they wouldn't have an excuse to brain their already suicidal tendencies on.

    • @Shmurph
      @Shmurph 6 лет назад

      That would be a reasonable argument.
      However, as I said in my first comment, there are numerous people with mental illnesses that had a variety of negative reactions to the show that *read the book prior to the show coming out* and were not affected by the book, because the book handles things in a sensitive and tactful way that the people who created the show were obviously incapable of.
      The fact remains that the writers of the show handled these sensitive topics in a very careless manner. They were told what kinds of effects the show would have and they did it anyways. There was a better way for them to go about things that was already written out for them in the goddamn source material but they chose to be edgy and ramp things up to an unnecessary level.
      Should people with suicidal thoughts/tendencies or any other mental conditions related to the content in the show watch it? No, probably not. Did they have any real way of knowing exactly what they were in for when the show first came out and people weren't really discussing it yet? Not really. There were warnings, sure, but apparently there were a number of things that the show didn't warn people of, which is extremely careless when dealing with a show about this kind of subject matter.
      Also, side note, some people don't even know they have any significant triggers. I didn't think I had any until about a month ago. Kinda hard to prepare yourself for something or avoid something when you don't know it's even an issue for you. Wouldn't be surprised if that was the case for some people with regards to this show.

When I was on the brink of suicide; as pathetic as it sounds this show reminded me that I'm not alone. This is a bit off topic but I've watched them film in my hometown and the ammount of work they put in to make sure this really helps others in need is phenomenal. I was talking to some of the people on set and they said they film for hours. It was around 9:00pm that I got there and it was freezing cold. . Does no one realize that suicide is the leading cause of death in young people. Yet we never talk about it or tell our children or friends or family. This show was so eye opening. There has hardly been any talk about suicide in the media but this got us talking. It’s such a creative way to show things that are actually happening right now. And to all the parents that think this just tells us that the only way to fix things is by killing yourself I honestly think you’re wrong.

      katie edmond We talk about suicide all the time in schools. Even if we don't talk about it enough (maybe it's different where you live), this show had so many opportunities to do better that it didn't take. For example, literally just following the rules for showing suicide

      Maeve M I one hundred percent see where your coming from but sometimes learning about it in schools don’t really capture the attention of some students while giving us something that could turn “popular” was a lot better, but it had so much potential for it to be a lot better yes. People have every right not to watch it though.( but no I don’t learn about suicide at my school which I think is actually retarded)

      How?

    • @QueenoftheRandoms
      @QueenoftheRandoms 6 лет назад +36

      1.completely romanticizes the issue
      2. It ignores all the rules for portraying suicide in the media set by The American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (including showing Hannah kill herself)
      3. Makes suicide look like a way of getting back, Hannah got everything she wanted when she killed herself, in real life their is no last laugh for a victim. It's basically a revenge fantasy where the revenge is SUICIDE
      4. Makes the option of getting help and speaking up look pointless
      I wouldn't really care but this show is aimed at teens and young adults the most likely ages to commit suicide. Also this show completely misrepresents mental illness, depression, suicide and bullying.
      I do believe that shows can be made for teens that depict suicide, but not this one

    Children also need to be taught to not only be open about issues in their lives that could lead to depression and suicidal thoughts but to cope with those thoughts and deal with them in ways other than suicide attempts. It is an important life lesson to learn how to be a fighter and battle through those tough moments in life and over come all obstacles

    It's cause kids these days are so impressionable and think the smallest thing is the worst thing ever, If they feel that way, then they won't handle adulthood. It's stupid there needs to be a warning over such an ignorant suffering show.

It even touched a realistic moment with sexual assault victims. This show is no glorification of anything. This show is more educational than most.

      Can you elaborate on how this show glorified suicide? People keep throwing that around but noboy actually says what about it made it seem "glamorous", desireable, or like a good idea in any way. As someone who has struggled with suicidal tendencies I feel stronly about this topic, however I didnt see this with this show.

    • @ClovertheUnburnt

      Personally, I feel that it runs the risk of treating suicide as what my friend and I tend to call catastrophe-porn - showing the worst-case scenario of something horrible, and making it edgy, and fascinating, and almost appealing in how terrible it is. It's a cultural norm at this point, and I think it happens a lot.
      But honestly, the main reason is that... I feel like at no point in the story does it treat Hannah's suicide as a choose, but rather as an almost unavoidable consequence. The power behind her taking her own life is dispersed between various people, who she blames for her death. I feel like she hands all of the responsibility for her suicide to other people, and they start to realize the monsters they've become, and wrestle with things they should have been wrestling with for years.
      Firstly, I think that putting your suicide on someone else's hands is not acceptable for any reason. They may trigger you, and your disease may blind you to the option of living - keeping on can seem impossible, and too exhausting and painful to be worth it - but in the end it is a choice, unless you actually shut down of heart break (I can't remember what the medical term for that is).
      Secondly, I feel like it risks giving the impression that if you die for it, you can change people. Too often, at our lowest, we are tempted to feel that if we remove ourselves from the equation, things would finally start to change, and people will finally be held accountable for their actions. I'd rather see a story of someone surviving, and making change occur once they come out the other side of suicidal depression. (just personally)
      And thirdly, the fact that Hannah's death is treated as almost unavoidable, I feel like it offers an air of inevitability to a tragic end for rape victims/people with depression/those who struggle with being bullied and slandered. These people deserve to know that they hold the power to change their lives - that they may be victims, but they are also more than that, and that nobody else can write their story.
      The reality of losing a friend, or the quiet kid at school, is almost never something people would want to base a show on. It's horrible, and quiet, and forgotten, and the people who are jerks don't always notice or care, and the people who are the most broken are the ones who you would have wanted to be friends with if you could have long enough to know them.
      Every artist is free to express themselves in whatever way they choose, but when you back it with a budget, and send it into the world for millions of viewers, there's a responsibility that comes with that.
      Personally, after losing ten years of my life to suicidal depression, and after having suffered through sexual harassment from a professor, I have to say that this was a trigger for me, and not one I enjoyed. The horror-film mode of the trailers felt dehumanizing, and the mood of the story was hurtful to me. I appreciate the warning label, but I feel like that's putting the weight on the viewers to be healthy - not the show.

      Princess Purity tbh there are tons of movies where someone over comes suicide .. And the reason I thought 13 Reasons why was cool was because I felt like it mainly centered around the people left behind
      Like whenever someone commits suicide that is always the entire focus .. However the show takes it deeper and into the lives of regular people and how they cope with the tragedy
      I mean yeah a lot is unrealistic af but it's a television show after all .. It's supposed to be dramatized and works of fiction
      I was also a victim of sexual assault while I was very much underage and I was bullied into depression ... So a lot of what happened I could actually relate to believe it or not (from the fabricated stories to pictures to backstabbing friends to harassment) and I can 100% say that it didn't trigger me at all because it was, as I said, fiction
      I can understand why you'd think they romanticized suicide ,
      All to their own I suppose

Our generation has it THE BEST AND EASIEST IN HISTORY we have better schools, internet, phones, medicine, more opportunities than anyone else and i know people face hardships and would consider suicide cause they were raped,abused and had bad experiences but I guarantee they wouldn’t want to wallow in sadness cause when ive suffered trauma i try to more forward and if this show gets to you YOU ARE WEAK

    It’s a bit late don’t you think? This series really didn’t help me. And I already talk to my parents.
    The series glamourises suicide, the main character kills herself to get revenge on her bullies. And that’s not how it works. I’m sorry but there should be more then a warning for this show, age restriction is a starter.

    • @SpottedLeafy
      @SpottedLeafy 6 лет назад +9

      If you think the character kills herself to get revenge on her bullies, then you aren't actually understanding it. Hannah kills herself because she is depressed, she is depressed for a number of reasons. The suicide itself was what Hannah saw as her only way out, it wasn't a direct revenge act on her bullies. The TAPES however, are a different story, they are the revenge. She wanted them to know how their acts affected her, and that yes, they ultimately led to her death, but the idea of revenge wasn't what drove her to kill herself. You need to be able to separate these two things.
      The show technically does have an age restriction, in the form of a rating, in Australia, this is MA 15+, therefore, technically nobody under the age of 15 should be watching it. Have fun policing that though on an online platform though, particularly if the parents are too stupid to put parental controls on their kids profiles. Let me just be clear on this rating thing though, and what it means. If say, a particular computer game is rated MA 15+ here in Australia, not only is it illegal for anyone under that age to purchase the game in a store, it is also illegal for their parents to purchase it for them (though this is all moot point now due to online clients like steam enabling easy faking of age). The same concept cannot apply to tv shows because of the way in which they are watched (in the privacy of a home), however any movie with this rating that shows in a cinema, the cinema will not let anyone underage in to see it, because that would be illegal. What I'm saying is that the ability of people to watch this show while too young has nothing to do with the age restriction, or Netflix itself, it's down to parents who don't care, can't be bothered, or don't know how to set up parental restrictions on their Netflix profiles.

    It does glorify suicide and the show is done in a distasteful manner; the biggest issue you’re all missing is that this is REVENGE suicide. The tapes Hannah left all are in an act of revenge, to everyone saying “topics like this need to be discussed”. They do, in an accurate perception because I for one don’t know anyone who’s attempted, including myself, who would leave their decision to attempt in the hands of others to deal with

      most suicide for teens is revenge/escape. They are getting bullied and mom/dad not around to talk too. Schools don't care.
      My sister was a cutter in her high school because she was bullied, and the school kept punishing her for it not the bully. Her counselor would try to help, but the school refused to listen.
      It got to the point my mom pulled her out of school, and my sister took a ged course.
      If you never had anyone like this, or was like this yourself. Please stfu. It was meant to be a conversation starter and show how awful and painful it can be.

    I was having suicidal thoughts when I watched the first season and it did not glorify it in any way. Seeing the tragedy that followed after was what made me get help. I didn’t want to see my friends and family go through that. I hate when people say things like this. I can honestly say that this show (and a combination of other things) helped save my life. It made the reality of what I wanted to do set in. It was realistic and it got conversation started. Suicide was talked about in my home, my school, my friend groups. It helped people understand its a real issue. NETFLIX PLEASE DON’T LET THE SECOND SEASON RUIN THAT.
