Thank you so much for showing how to transfer my forScore library and settings from my old iPad to my new pad -your explanatory video was really easy to follow and helpful!
Thank you so much for this video. I have an ancient version of foreScore on a first generation ipad. I thought for sure I was sunk as far as moving all my music files with their metadata to a newer ipad, let alone with all the various set lists. But with some patience, and slight modification as presented in your video, I was able to get everything over saving myself countless hours trying to recreate my "book". FYI, in my case the old forScore version didn't have an archive feature, but I was able to pull it up on a never forScore on my iMac and from there made an archive that I was able to airdrop to a newer ipad. Thanks a million -- you saved the day!
Great, thank you! I had to add another step in the process, but you got me 95% of the way there. The online documentation for forScore was pitiful, got me nowhere near.
Thanks a bunch! I have an updated version of forScore for iPad and have exclusively been using the iPad. I recently downloaded the Mac app and was a bit puzzled on the website's instructions on moving a library (and annotations, metadata) from one device to another. Thanks for documenting and providing this help!
Thank you so much, this is brilliant! I am a new forScore user, and I was having trouble with iCloud sync only syncing some of my scores, and losing tags and labels in the process. This worked flawlessly!
Oh my god, I swear I love you hahahaha. I made it! Thank you very much!!! I spent almost 3 hours reading and trying to do this. Finally I saw your video and I made it!
Thank you so much for this video! ForScore's instructions made no sense to me at all. One small additional step I had to do was import the airdropped file before it showed up in backups in my new ipad. Might just be worth noting as others may have a similar extra step to do.
This was extremely helpful! If you are in the mood to answer some beginner questions, I’d appreciate that. I use my bigger iPad as my main display and manually transferred files onto my iPad mini using share type functions. My question is, how can I backup my iPad files/data onto the Mini so that the Mini is a mirror copy?
Thanks for watching. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "mirror copy". The process I described in this video should exactly duplicate your entire library, all your scores, annotations, setlists, etc. will be transfered to the new device. Worth noting: that is making a separate copy. They aren't connected. So if you make an edit or add a score on the new device, the old device will not be updated. If that's your goal, you should turn on forScore Sync. Start by doing this on your _old_ device that has all your data. Go to the Toolbox > Sync > Sync with iCloud. Tell forScore to replace the cloud data. Then wait for that initial sync to iCloud to happen (could be a few minutes or maybe closer to 30 min if you have a large library and/or slow Internet connection). After that is complete do the same thing on your destination iPad. This time, when you turn on Sync with iCloud, tell it to replace the _local_ data. Once that sync is done, you'll have a complete copy of your whole library on both devices, and as long as you keep the "Sync with iCloud" toggled on, any changes you make on one device will be copied to the other device any time your device is online.
@@DavidMacDonald Your instructions worked! Thank you! By mirror copy I meant that I wanted changes made on the larger iPad to show up on the Mini. I now see with sync turned on, the reverse is also true…and changes take place more or less immediately, similar to changes in a Contact record. I haven’t looked in the User Guide to see what “Reset sync data” does, but it doesn’t sound like I’d need it. A related menu item, “Storage > Do not backup,” is a bit mysterious, but the prompt says turning it on is not recommended, so I won’t turn it on. Thank you again!
Thank you so much for your help! Your video is super clear, but I need help with this and maybe you have the answer: a friend has a set list on his iPad and I have a different one on mine. We share out backups to the other one but we can't find how to combine both backups in each of our iPads on our fourscore library. Do you have any idea? Thank you for your help!
Thanks David. most helpful. Just one question: In transferring this backup to the new ipad will it overwrite the content that's currently on it? I want to add a library of a colleagues' jazz scores to my ipad pro that already has a lot of content on it (ukulele group scores).
Thanks for watching! I think it should _add_ those to your existing library, but if you're worried, you can always make an archive backup of your own library first.
I come by regularly so you can help me update ipad 2. Thank you. You are very clear in your presentation. Is it okay to dump older backups? Is it a good idea?
Thanks for this video David (I know, I'm a year late). I've been trying to figure out if there's a way to transfer a forScore library into mobilesheets, which is a Windows/Android music reader. I can't find anything online. I'm wondering if I will just have to transfer each individual song pdf file, one by one? Any insight you can provide on this? Thanks in advance.
thank you. i"ll try this later. im not a techkie kind of guy, im having problem on how am i going to back up my forscore going to my macbook. thanks again
Wow! That was truly easy. Before seeing your video, I spent a couple of hours trying to copy my library from my 2019 iPad to my fancy new 2021 iPad Pro and came up empty. After watching your video, in less than 10 minutes, I was able to seamlessly copy my entire library, annotations and all. Thank you so much!! Question. Is there a way to copy the same library to an iPad 2, which doesn't have AirDrop?
Hello David, Thank you for presenting the transfer procedure from an old ipad to a new one. I had one question though. You mentioned that the file format changed from .pdf to another format during the airdrop transfer. Since all of my files on my ipad are in a .pdf format, how would I change that file extension?
Thanks for watching! When you import into forScore, your files are converted to a forScore format. They're not PDFs anymore (though you can get PDFs back out again if you need to). If you're doing a transfer, don't change any extensions.
Really helpful video, thank you! Presumably if I Airdrop the Forscore Archive to my MacBook first, I can then Airdrop it to my new iPad just the same? The only reason is I'll be trading in my old iPad so can't transfer it directly. Thanks!
Thanks for watching. You’re right that you can transfer the file to another device in between, but I still don’t think I would trust the transfer without having the original device to go back to if something goes wrong. If your MacBook is on OS 11.0 or higher (Big Sur), you can install forScore from the App Store to make sure the Archive file was created correctly and can be opened on another device.
Maybe a stupid question however, I want to ask rather than assume. When I follow the instructions in the video, will the orginal material on my orginal iPad remain the same and unbothered? Pretty much what I want to do is store a "backup" using an older unused iPhone as a forscore storage incase my iPad being used was to ever crash. TIA!!! And thank you for the great video!!!
Yes. Nothing happens to the library on the source device. And since this video was published, you can now sync your library automatically to iCloud, which makes switching devices pretty easy.
Thank you for your video although I followed the prompts to transfer through airdrop it does not show the transfer on my new device. It just keeps saying waiting. Any help on this would be appreciated. I am just trying to get my scores on my 2nd ipad.
Thanks for watching! Depending on the devices you're working with, AirDrop can be a little fussy. You might try another method of getting the archive file to your new device, maybe Dropbox or Google Drive would work?
You can put the archive on any form of storage. Most people probably don't regularly connect thumb drives to their iPads, but it's very possible. I have a USB-C thumb drive for exactly this purpose. When you create the archive and are offered to "Share" it to another application, select the Files app, and your thumb drive should be in the list of locations there.
Hi! Quick question, is it possible for me to do this method on another ipad that has an existing files, I’d just want to add all the files from my old ipad to another ipad without deleting the files on the new ipad. Will the files be deleted on the new ipad or is it just going to add on the existing files? Thank you!
@@SamDeuda Thanks! Good to know. I wonder if the backup Archive contains scores that have the same Titles as those already on the iPad, whether they will be overwritten or simply get a number at the end of the title. I think the latter version.
@@Oleg__ i do think that none of the old scores got over written, Maybe I’m wrong but in my case I can’t be bothered since it’s worth 10 gb of files that i need to transfer.
Thank you for the help. I did manage to get all my files from the old iPad Pro to my new, but the composers didn’t transfer completely. The archive transferred but when I tried to get it to install it always forces forScore to quit after a long time. I have some 3500+ scores and only have composers for about 1200 but would like to save myself the work of relabeling. Any suggestions?
Thanks for watching! It sounds like something has gone wrong! I would try again and make sure you give the iPad plenty of time. It may help to do this while plugged in to power, leave forScore open in the foreground, and don't use the iPad for anything else while it's working. If that doesn't do the trick, you may want to contact forScore support for help.
This video is awesome! One thing though. When I transferred the music following your video steps it transfered all the libraries but the music in the libraries were all mixed up…I am not sure why. 🧐 would you know why?
I mean that some solo music (from the solo library) gets in the quintet library and some of the the Christmas music is now in the trio library…the libraries names are all in the new IPad but the music appears randomly in different libraries now. 🤦♀️😩 I wonder if it has anything to do with an update that I have not done or something.
Did you have multiple folder/libraries in the main library? I have a folder for trio music, piano solo, Reg pad, quartet, duos, marches….could it be that it doesn’t really transfer all the libraries the way they were organized?
@@anniebilodeau6374 I have about eight or ten libraries and they all came over ok. You should definitely contact forScore support about it. Having said that, since I made this tutorial, there is a new Sync feature that is probably even easier. Just turn it on for the source device, wait a bit for it to upload to iCloud, and then turn it on for the destination device.
If I'm on a bus or train I would like to view FOURSCORE music on my Iphone, can that be done? Ok, It worked, I can now look at my music on my IPHONE. Great. Thanks.
I believe you should be able to send your library between any two devices regardless of the accounts setup using the method I describe here. However, it's worth noting that you cannot use forScore Sync (to keep both devices continously up-to-date) unless you are signed into the same account everywhere.
can I make an arcive backup from my MacBookAir M1, where I have all my notes with keywords? or is there another easy way to transfer a lot of notes with keyword from my Mac computer to my iPad ?
Hi Marianne. This transfer method will work pretty much the same way on the Mac as it does on iPads. The only other way to achieve this would be if you're a forScore Pro subscriber, you can turn on cloud sync'ing, which is what I currently do to keep my Mac and iPad libraries up-to-date. To do this in forScore, go to Tools (the icon in the top right) > Settings > forScore Pro > Manage Subscription to either buy or verify that you have previously purchased it. If you have purchased the subscription on any device, you can tap "Restore Subscription" to have it recognized on your current device. To set up sync, on your first device that has all your scores and metadata, go to Tools > Sync and turn on Sync with iCloud. The first time you do this on your first device, select "Prefer Device Versions". WAIT FOR THE FIRST SYNC TO COMPLETE! Then, on your second device, turn on sync and select "Prefer iCloud Versions". Once the initial sync is done you can hop back and forth between Mac and iPad as frequently as you like, and any new scores or annotations you make will show up in both places.
Great explanation. Wonder if you can answer this. I want to get all of my pdfs by themelves. I'm worried that one of these days, good old Apple will come out with a new OS and Forescore won't work. Then what do you do? So if I can have this export just all the .pdfs and even .mp3s that are on here (I use music tracks), that would help me sleep at nite. (Paranoid, I know, but God knows we spend enough time with this program, and want to preserve everything). Would you happen to know how to do that? Thanks in advance
@@DavidMacDonald in the meantime, I actually figured out how to do it if anybody’s interested. just go to your library and click on all scores . Then click share, and you can choose from PDF or annotated .PDFs. Takes a few minutes and then it asks you what folder you want to put them in!
This is very helpful! Is it possible to merge 2 libraries together? I have two devices with unique libraries, scores, and setlists and would like to combine them into one. If I were to import an archive of one of the libraries to the other device, would it keep both the original and the other library that was from the archive?
Thanks for watching! I _think_ that should merge the libraries, but I’m not completely sure. If you want to try it, make an archive backup of both devices, so if it goes wrong you can get back to your previous state.
Is this the best method to share my library, set lists and so forth with my bandmates who have forscore or is there a different way since you may have to do this weekly when you add new songs and new setlists. Thanks for any help you can give me on sharing with bandmates.
Thanks for watching, Len! You could definitely use this to get your bandmates started, but it's really not intended to be a a sync solution. I would recommend doing this once and then adding each new score and setlist separately. Otherwise, any changes or markings that your bandmates make (reminders to themselves, for example) would get wiped out the next time you update their libraries. If sharing and collaboration are important to you, I don't know if forScore is the best option. There's another great app called Newzik that has much more robust sharing and collaboration features, including some tools to do pretty much exactly what you're describing here. newzik.com/en/app/
@@DavidMacDonald thanks for the reply. I understand about the sync. But it’s just a duo group and I control the scores. We actually just use pdf cord lyric sheets so we are not to complicated. I just want to make sure when I make the copy to airdrop on my other iPad I am not losing it on the host iPad. My understanding from your video is that is not an issue. Can you just confirm that before I do it.
No. If you’re signed in to the same Apple ID on both devices, the subscription transfers automatically. If you’re not seeing Pro features, go to the Pro section of settings and tap “Restore Purchases”
if you have a USB drive that can plug into an iPad, do all the things in the video to make an _archive_ backup, and when it asks where you want to put it, select the Files app, and you should see your USB drive as a location there.

Yes. forScore is available for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
I’ve got two different accounts, bought from different apple accounts. Can I send everything efficiently between different accounts?
Honestly, I think that is so unlikely that it’s not worth worrying about.
@@DavidMacDonald in the meantime, I actually figured out how to do it if anybody’s interested. just go to your library and click on all scores . Then click share, and you can choose from PDF or annotated .PDFs. Takes a few minutes and then it asks you what folder you want to put them in!
How do you Get rid of “what’s next” in ForScore?
This is very helpful! Is it possible to merge 2 libraries together? I have two devices with unique libraries, scores, and setlists and would like to combine them into one. If I were to import an archive of one of the libraries to the other device, would it keep both the original and the other library that was from the archive?
Thanks for watching! I _think_ that should merge the libraries, but I’m not completely sure. If you want to try it, make an archive backup of both devices, so if it goes wrong you can get back to your previous state.
@@DavidMacDonald that’s exactly what I had in mind. Thanks!
David, thanks for this. Is it okay to delete older archives?
Yep! Once you make the archive file, it's no longer connected to forScore. Deleting it won't have any affect on your active library.
Thank you
Is this the best method to share my library, set lists and so forth with my bandmates who have forscore or is there a different way since you may have to do this weekly when you add new songs and new setlists.
Correct! This process just makes a copy. No data is removed from the source device.
Does this also transfer a subscription to forscore pro?
No. If you’re signed in to the same Apple ID on both devices, the subscription transfers automatically. If you’re not seeing Pro features, go to the Pro section of settings and tap “Restore Purchases”
Please excuse me for being so computer dumb. In case I lose my iPad I want to backup my library on a USB stick. How do I do that?
if you have a USB drive that can plug into an iPad, do all the things in the video to make an _archive_ backup, and when it asks where you want to put it, select the Files app, and you should see your USB drive as a location there.
thank you so much!
