    I'm an existentialist; I think the one thing that makes life worth living is emotion. The fact that we innately possess the ability to feel and respond to our experiences and that to me means that their is purpose for me. The only immaterial thing I've come to witness in my life is compensation of how our interactions and efforts pay ahead for the good and bad we experience. Or how it paves the way for our consequences as a result of the negativity we produce and impact others with.

    life has no meaning, I have the impression that we are forced to follow a predefined path, but I like to be able to explore new opportunities, discover new things, even if I know that there is it's very unlucky that it will do anything...

    and it's far from being the only experience I have, I went to university which was of no use to me, I did 4 internships without follow-up, yada, yada...

    I am an optimistic nihilist but view a lot of these philosophies as 2 sides of the same coin. It's a little pretentiousness for people to just call it a fad or not real philosophy. The reason i align myself with this idea is mainly because of the freedom you didnt realize you had. If there was a god or if there was something that truely mattered in this world, then you really dont have free will. You're forced to worship something and live a certain way. I personally believe every human has a moral compass thats developed thru your own experience in life. How can you objectively say anyones morals are correct or false without living their life? None of it really matters as long as you live by your morals and you live a life thats beautiful to you. No ones way of life is better than yours as long as they are causing pain or suffering on to others. Youre free to choose how youd like to live your life. The suffering in your life isnt permanent nor was it useless. You must suffer to grow unfortunately but understanding the suffering is the only way to have true compassion.

      @@capitanfindus1994 yes it isn't a classical philosophical literature term, but that doesn't mean different perspectives of the same idea can't be developed. You should read my comment fully because it really isn't absurdism because I'm accepting nothing inherently has meaning and that's actually good. Does this touch on absurdism? Absolutely but i dont think its absurd that nothing has meaning. I chose what to believe (my moral compass) and what I deem is a beautiful life. There's a strong sense of self that arises from knowing that you are free to choose what matters to you, what makes you happy, what values you hold i high regard, etc. The core idea of nihilism, extenentialism, absurdism, or stoicism does not cover this.

    • @capitanfindus1994
      @capitanfindus1994 5 месяцев назад +5

      @@Brian-rv2xs I read your comment fully, more than once. Please don't think I meant any disrespect, or that I'm belittling the ideas you choose to take to heart.
      What I was trying to say, is that 'Optimistic Nihilism' is inherently not a very well developed concept, nor is it meant to be. As such, it misses out on an entire history of more nuanced and established ideas.
      This is understandable, because it's a pop-philosophy term coined by a 'popular-science' RUclipsr, with little to no background in philosophy (they don't claim to either), who's name literally translates to 'In-a-Nutshell' or 'In short'. I have no problem with this, in fact I'm happy that the video attracted 17 million people to this branch of philosophy. It's simple, effective, clear and accessible, this is the purpose of the channel.
      The 'issue' with the video, and in turn 'Optimistic Nihilism' lies more with:
      A) As I said, the video is meant to be simplistic for the sake of clarity and reaching a wide audience. Great for mass education via an internet platform that prioritises entertainment over education, but comes at the cost of the quality of the information presented. It contradicts itself in ways that have already been discussed by the likes of of Camus, Sartre and Simon de Beauvoir (as well as their critics).
      B) The video does not source, mention or cite the mixture of established philosophies that it is very clearly founded on. I think this is not helpful, because it vicariously limits people to an oversimplified youtube video, instead of encouraging people to explore all the work that has been done in this branch of philosophy throughout its incredibly long and nuanced history.
      D) The video is potentially misleading, and does not really bring anything new to the table. It is only unique in the sense that it provides a unique *combination* of already established concepts (as its trying to fit in as much as possible into a short video). This makes the video a little less coherent as a 'philosophy' once you cross-reference it's ideas with those of others.
      In regard to your reply,
      "That doesn't mean different perspectives of the same idea can't be developed" I made no such claim, this is how all ideas, in virtually every academic discipline, develop over time.
      "It really isn't Absurdism because I'm accepting nothing inherently has meaning and that's actually good". The assertion that recognising the lack of inherent meaning is a source of personal freedom and a "good" thing is a core idea in Existentialism and Absurdism. Both philosophies advocate embracing freedom and personal responsibility once the absence of inherent meaning is acknowledged.
      "Does this touch on absurdism? Absolutely, but I don't think it's absurd that nothing has meaning." It doesn't just touch on it, it almost exactly mirrors it. The only difference is that Camus, and virtually every philosopher whose touched this subject posit that Nihilism is not a 'good' thing (sometimes they don't think it's a 'bad' thing either, it's neutral, it's just 'the truth'), whats 'good' is the personal freedom you can get from it.
      Also, feeling that life is 'absurd' is Camus' personal opinion / description of his own 'feeling' when looking at the world, it's not really central to his ideas, despite it being the source of the philosophies' nomenclature. 'Absurdity' is however *related* to a core idea, which revolves around the conflict between humans' desire to find inherent meaning in life and the fact that the universe is completely bankrupt of any of it, to him it's absurd because it's almost as the the universe did this intentionally to torture you, like being born with a stomach in a world where food doesn't exist.
      "I chose what to believe (my moral compass) and what I deem is a beautiful life." The assertion that you choose your beliefs and values, constructing a personal moral compass, closely mirrors existentialist thought.
      "There's a strong sense of self that arises from knowing that you are free to choose what matters to you, what makes you happy, what values you hold i high regard, etc." I agree, but 'What makes you happy' as a substitute for meaning is dangerous (I.e what if what makes you happy, makes someone else incredibly unhappy? Sartre would say "My freedom ends where yours begins")
      "The core idea of Nihilism, Existentialism, Absurdism [...] does not cover this" It does! I promise! I suggest looking at these terms on the stanford philosophy website, it'll help a lot!
      "Stoicism does not cover this." Stoicism isn't really relevant. The Stoics did not really touch on nihilism or meaning in the same way as the other ideas discussed here, nor where they trying to. Epicurean philosophy is much more relevant, and also somewhat present in 'Optimistic Nihilism', so I think you would be interested!
      Sorry for the essay, this is something I really passionate about, I hope this clears some stuff up.

Maybe there shouldn't be a label to it cause everyone will have varying degrees of what they identify with the most? But at the same time they are so closely related to one another idk. What are your thoughts? I'll definitely check out Epicurean philosophy and read up on it.

    Finding meaning is meaningless the question "what is the meaning of life" is mix of many other questions. It is not the right question to ask. The meaning of life is also, not the same for everyone so it is not possible that one person finds it and everyone can use it. Is finding meaning even worth it?

    • @capitanfindus1994
      @capitanfindus1994 5 месяцев назад +2

      Your idea here is bordering on absurdism! One of Camus' critiques of existentialism is that, creating meaning, in a meaningless world is wilful delusion. Instead, 'just live' (gross oversimplification) in spite of the lack of meaning, as if it were an act of rebellion against a universe that condemned you to being thing that inherently seeks meaning (a conscious being / a human) in a world that provides none. I.e "life is meaningless? so what? that doesnt mean anything to me!" (pun intended)

    • @serendipity-discover
      @serendipity-discover 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@capitanfindus1994 The only difference between my thought and absurdism is that absurdism thinks that just as the universe, our lives are also meaningless while I think that we are parts of an elaborate system and the more we get detached from that system the harder it gets to answer the question 'What is the meaning of life'. Although, we can not return to our primal selves we can learn from them. They, just lived, no "what is the meaning of life" or "why are we here", they just lived. If one seeks no answer and lives as he goes he will live a static life there will be no pull towards meaning and things of that manner. But if one seeks meaning his life is not enough to find the answer so getting as close as possible would be an answer.

    Stop ideation, you are no-thing. Why nothing? Because being itself is inherently blissful once you are free of expectations and regrets - both of which arise from conceptual thought. Conceptual thought is the mental process of creating something out of nothing. Once you are (or see yourself as) "something" you are trapped by expectations and regrets. To see yourself as "something" is to remain in that illusory prison and so suffer the consequences of that addiction.
    Be nothing, you ARE nothing and are free.

    I like to explain these as using the figurative tool of little league soccer. Think of life in terms as if it is a game of little league soccer. The nihilist is that kid whose parents are making sign up. He knows the team isn’t the best, the rules are dumb, and he doesn’t want to play, he finds it useless. The Existentialist understands they probably won’t win many games, but chooses to focus on making himself the best he can be, to try his best. That’s his purpose while playing. The Absurdist doesn’t care about winning or losing, he’s just there to have fun with his friends.

    I've been thinking about this whole question of meaning and think they all get it wrong. Meaningfulness is an emotional response, it's not something inherent within anything. So being all concerned over whether or not lifr has any meaning is completely missing the point. Of course it doesn't, because meaning is entirely up to us to define. It's like having a debate over whether life is joyful or sad or whatever. Meaning is not some external energy field we suck up from outside ourselves, it is just an emotional response.
    I think this existentialism
    ihikism\absurdism debate ia really about whether or not God exists and if they do, what their will is and the whole idea of meaning is wrapped up in the idea of divine intention. But that's silly, we have a sense of meaning within us, so if God exists of course it is their will that we experience meaning. If not, we still have a sense of meaning, and it's up to experience it or not.
    So I guess this lines up best with existentialism, make your own meaning. But I still think the angle the whole debate comes from is silly and makes no sense. Nihilism is absurd. So meaning isn't some external juju you can suck up so that means be sad?! That is complete nonsense built into our absurd human nature. Absurdism is absurd too, feel meaning or don't feel meaning, doesn't matter, there is nothing to rebel against. It's up to your personal response only, like any emotion.

    I just want to say to the comments, you shouldve been questioning betterhelp when youtubers started advertising them, not questioning the youtuber when betterhelp does something that makes you against them.
    90% of the things youtubers do ads for are only sold brcause the youtuber does ads for them, not because they made a better product. They almost always copied an existing product and matketed it to win instead of develope the product more to win. Most items marketed on social media are changed with gimmicks but are the same thing as something thats cheaper because they didnt market it to death.
    Just the name "betterhelp" sounds like a marketing decision using rhetoric to trick you into thinking it is "better, help" and because of that i believe this is a company marketing to sell rather than a company matketing to help.
    The proof is always right in front of you, sometimes in the name, these companies dont care about you and marketing deals with people who have zeeeeeeeheheheheheheeeeeerooooooooo clue what theyre talking about who are professional video creators, not therapists, who you should never trust is the ultimate dead giveaway.
    PLEASE PEOPLE stop buying products that are overmarketed, stop giving these greedy nobodies money, force them to make a product and stand out in the market, force them to do real marketing with critics who know the target market at a high level.

    What is meaning in life how do you judge it and when individuals do are they right on how they define it and how do they know they are right? Joy and peace may define something but does that define life and why we are here, the purpose and meaning of life?
