    Rush never let their technical ability as a band get in the way of their song writing. That's what makes them so great for me.

    • @johndardi1334
      @johndardi1334 Год назад +1

      Bro ABSOLUTELY. That’s EXACTLY what I love about them. So many bands with a lot of technical ability lose the purpose of the song. When I listen to some of those bands I find my mind starts to wander and I lose interest. But when I listen to Rush I’m on the edge of my seat the whole time. A 20 minute song seems like a 5 minute song. They’re just brilliant at every thing they do.

    I feel bad for younger people who will never get the chance to hear their favorite music the way we did in 70s, 80s and 90s (due to the music industry's change). Imagine being a late teen or early 20s with such eager anticipation for your favorite bands next album, going to the record store, getting your copy of record(tape or CD} , rushing home , ripping off the cover, starting the stereo, opening the album jacket, reading the lyrics and having your ears explode with something like this. WOW. And then you get a smile on your face because perry soon you will know they are gonna come and perform this for LIVE and in person.

      I'm 53 and I get that. I did that. On the other hand I missed out on a lot of good music because I was too poor or stingy to buy the albums. I must say streaming is an amazing advance. I'm belatedly getting to know the deeper catalogue of my favorite bands and other bands like them.

    I saw this tour in Oct 1979 they played Cygnus X-1 book ! and book II back to back amazing never to be played again in its entirety. I'm very lucky Rush Fan. I have seen them many times from 79 to R40 2015. Neil RIP. At the time this was the hardest thing for them to write & perform this masterpiece. Thanks to Terry Brown their producer for excellent audio.
    “But I like to think that it’s the ambitiousness in the effort we put in. There’s something truly prog about that record, and I think fans of that genre really appreciate that.”

      You were definitely lucky to see that show.... In my opinion those were the days to see those guys... My first RUSH show was Grace Under Pressure... They changed big-time right there.... They stopped using Terry Brown to produce the records ... They were still good but I didn't take to the change very well...

    Just introduced Cygnus X-1 to my granddaughter (a tween who usually listens to top 40 💩 and has been fairly vocal in her disdain for my 'old grandma music' as she calls it). I haven't laughed that hard in a long time! 😂 Poor kid came out of it pretty much speechless and shell shocked - like getting hit with repeated
    jump scares in a horror movie - but with a much better appreciation of what really talented musicians can create.
    Now I'm just trying to decide how much recovery time to give her before having her listen to this!!
    I hope her 🧠 doesn't explode!!

    The quiet part in the middle of Book II is where the Book I story fits in. You can hear some of Book I in the background. Listen to both some more and pick up on the story. That’s what intrigues me…it took me a while to ‘get it.’ Great reaction as always Tim! 😎

  • @blanewilliams5960

    There is no controversy imo. Liking a RUSH song a little more than another RUSH song is perfectly acceptable. Listen to them both again back to back and then again while reading the lyrics. The story of Cygnus definitely rivals 2112 and I am not saying one is better than the other, they both came from the same band and are both EPIC.

  • @MrVentrata

    I used to love opening up the vinyl record cover, like a book and follow the story. Not just the lyrics but the titles of the different parts. The story from Apollo’s view then Dionysus and then from Cygnus. Did you get that Cygnus was the astronaut from book 1 on his ship the Rocinante, that got dragged into the black hole and into Olympus as a god?

    Yes! And here we have the Alex Chord - behold in all its glory the F#7add11. Sounds complex, but it's easy to play and shows Alex's penchant for adding open strings to chord shapes. It's basically a F# maj chord with open B- and E-strings (F#-C#-F#-A#-B-E). The dissonance this creates resolves beautifully when he moves up to A in the 8th measure (technically, Aadd9, since he just moves up to the 5th frets, again leaving two high strings open which adds the B to the A maj chord). In the parts that feel 12/8, he is just playing arpeggios on this shape as he moves it up and down the neck. Classic Alex!

  • @94gtfour
    @94gtfour 2 года назад +1

    You are spot on with Alex's style. Never too over the top, but solid technique and oozing with feel and confidence. He always plays to the music and he held true to that throughout their career.
    Side note, consider the pace the band is going at this point. Their debut album was in spring 1974, and Hemispheres was fall 1978... That's Fly By Night, Caress of Steel, 2112, A Farewell To Kings, and Hemispheres... 5 masterpieces in just over 4 years after Neil joined!!! Not to mention they're touring throughout too!

    Some of the best bass ever recorded on a rock album up to that point. Legendary stuff. The interplay between Neil and Geddy as a rhythm section really kicked up a few notches on this album. Unfortunately, as a live set, GED kind of bit off a little more then he could chew
    trying to sing and play this simultaneously, so both of those aspects of his performance suffered for it on this song live, however,...They did revisit "Book 2" again during the 90s and played it in its entirety (slightly stripped down) without the vocals and it was AWESOME! Even better then the album...and of course, about two and a half minutes in, ..the "triangular bell" had its moment in the sun, complete with its own spot light!...Ding!

    To me it’s the story. The Pearls lyrics are amazing. How book one and book 2 tie in together is really cool as well. And as far as I am aware I think Neil came up with the story totally on his own. And how the word hemispheres has so many meanings and it all ties in together in the story.

  • @gregcormier2379

    For me, what Neil is adding to the music , is were he separated himself from other drummers. There is just as much percussion playing as there is drumming is this song and it adds so much to the overall vibe being portrayed in the lyrics.

    This is one of top 3 all time favorite songs from ALL of their albums, not that I am set on any particular order in my given mood! LOL That said it was really cool how they incorporated Neil's lyrics from the stories he read into amazing song...some were longer than others, but I just really liked how this one was broken up with the really soft parts thrown in, that are actually beautiful, seeing this performed LIVE in the 80's was a amazing treat to witness and feel privileged to have seen them live so many times!!

    This is why Tucson '78 unofficial live recording is essential as a bonus live album. Nowhere else can you hear them play Hemispheres live in its entirety. You get this whole album, most of A Farewell to Kings, most of 2112, and some of the best stuff from the first three albums.

    AWSOME! You're exactly right, Tim. RUSH is so masterful at giving the listener a "tasty" piece to chew on, and then they TAKE IT AWAY, leaving the listener wanting more (and usually getting it!). I'm kind of with you on which one of these two CYGNUS X*1 Book 1&2 is my favorite. Musically, for me it's Book 1, but lyrically it's Book 2, hands down! Both are great songs. THANKS as always!☮☮☮

    X1 is the how, X2 is the why I think. One is more ambient the other is more musical and it depends on what kinda mood your in.
    X1 reminds me of The Black Hole from Disney, where John Berry made it sound like you're actually traveling through a black hole, regardless of what you are seeing on screen. Another level to the mastery.

    Great reaction, Tim! I love this album! One of my favorites! And who can’t acknowledge that opening chord… known as the “Alex Lifeson Chord”! (John Petrucci’s favorite chord… ) the suspended F#11 that allows them to move to any other key they want from there! It was brought back on the song “Far Cry” from the “Snakes and Arrows” album in 2007! “Hemispheres” nearly killed them! They were really burnt out after this album and started moving away from the longer epic pieces after this (with a few exceptions)! This is one of the greats, glad your enjoying it! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!

    This album is obviously legendary especially from a playing standpoint, but I've always felt the next record is where they really hit their stride and all the experiments of the first 6 records combined with gained maturity of not needing to write a long "prog" record just fore the sake of it lead to a quantum leap in almost every category. Drum sound way better, lyrics suddenly not sci-fi/history based, but based on Peart's world views, Geddy's vocals suddenly way more accessible/melodic with the music just enough prog to make everything interesting. Permanent Waves not only kicked off the 80's, but kicked off a string of albums that is hard to match. Peart said Rush hit their stride on Moving Pictures, but I think it was Permanent Waves.

    This song should be played, a few times, to marinate, on the brain. Technically, it is precise and clean. It does have a more polished sound, to it. It does come off different, than some others. I can remember first listening, It didn't hit me maybe in same way, as you here. Lyrically, it is a masterpiece and the drumming, is as well. Listen a few more times!!

    My first reaction and my opinion for some years was the same: book I > book II. Not now. It's curious, I can't stop finding some Eastern Europe vibes here. Easy to understand if you consider Alex and Geddy's roots.
    If you like Rush, Dream Theater, Joe Satriani, you really need to listen to Plini.

  • @markstromberg1148

    The idea of Cygnus X-1, Book II, that science, intellect - presumably in one hemisphere - and practicality are vying against the heart, art and emotions - presumably in the other - for primacy over the human soul, and that a black hole (itself a god) comes forth to achieve balance between them and harmonize them is just so interesting as an extended musical metaphor. Only Rush and Neil Peart would put this "opera" to music. In fact, the more I think about this epic, the more I think it was styled based on opera. Like Carmen, the suite begins with an overture that introduces the musical themes, then the first act sets up the conflict, the second act provides the solution, and then there is a finale with the resolution or morale of the story. I wonder if anything the members have said since validates (or invalidates) that theory. I am sure others will know the answer to this.

    • @seankeogh6102
      @seankeogh6102 2 года назад +1

      Correct me if I'm wrong, but it wasn't a black hole, but the protaganist from Book 1, that passed through the black hole in his ship, the Rocinate, that emerges as a god.
