one of the most underrated sax players around, Max is a master!
I'm constantly coming back to this recording. It's more or less the perfect example of solo development. Not only that but you have monster tone and a super intelligent way of phrasing your lines.

I’ll have to agree man, this improv has everything. Great time, Swings hard, great feel, rhythmic and harmonic complexity and simplicity where it needs it and super melodic. One of my favorites for sure, would love to catch a lesson with this cat. #SuperTastyPlaying

The only thing wrong with this performance is the fact that it’s taken me this long to find it. 😊Bloody marvellous. This sums up everything that makes live jazz so unique and so compelling. Both soloists know the value of building a solo without firing all their best stuff off in the early choruses. Fabulous. I haven’t heard a tenor player who sounds that comfortable on his horn for a very long time. Is there more from this performance?

Who said white Europeans can't yump?? Jazz is no longer the sole providence of black American players methinks. This guys testament to that?? Sound, articulation, time and content. This guy has it all together, amazing playing and so understated. If I had a fairy godmother I'd wish to be able to play like this. And amazingly I've seen him playing on all kindsa different mouthpieces and horns and none of it seems to make any difference, he always sounds so great.. Harry Vadirchie if only.....

Picked up my horn after hearing this. It's so frustrating at times. Threw my horn out the window. Really love jazz, but I'm never satisfied, it just amazes me when I hear something this brilliant. The struggle continues. Makes you wonder if guys this talented ever get discouraged.

Tutte le volte che Max Ionata imbraccia lo strumento onora puntualmente ogni brano sia per il suo magico timbro e sia per il fraseggio attento e controllato! Non ho mai visto Ionata sfrenarsi o strafare, tuttavia è possibile che lo faccia quando mi inebria letteralmente con fraseggi e idee melodiche ricche di passione e bellezza! E' così! I keep returning to this wonderful clip. The beauty of Max’s sublime solo has rightly been commented on many times-and so it should be. But let’s hear it also for the great rhythm section. So simpatico! To follow Max’s solo is a big ask but Luca Mannutza does just that with a superb solo of his own that builds and blossoms in a great climax. Complimenti a tutti!

Hi Max, one of the best solos I've heard on this tune! I feel your music has something very special, maybe because unlike some saxophonists, you really have something to say, you "sing" through your horn and it comes from the heart! Plus your sound is incredible! Just wow!

Da gibt es nichts zu überprüfen!!! Das Solo von Max beginnt sehr melodisch (Chet Baker, Stan Getz, und Dexter Gorden lassen grüßen) und steigert sich im weiteren Verlauf sehr emotional wie bei John Coltrane und ist dramaturgisch absolut perfekt aufgebaut. Ich liebe sein Spiel und seinen Ton. Auch der Pianist spielt hervorragend. Bassist und Drummer haben allerdings meiner Meinung nach während des Pianosolos zuviel experimentiert, anstatt den Pianist unterstützend zu begleiten und auf seine Ideen einzugehen.

The solo of Max starts very melodic (Chet Baker, Stan Getz, and Dexter Gorden send greetings) and increases in the course very emotional as in John Coltrane and is dramaturgically constructed absolutely perfect. I love his play and his tone. The pianist plays well too. Bassist and drummer, in my opinion, experimented too much during the piano solos, instead of supporting the pianist in support of his ideas.
