DJ you didn’t mention Whetstone for this deck. Whetstone Artifact 3CMC - 3: Each player puts top 2 cards of library into their graveyard. That is 6 counters on Haunt for every 3 mana plus whatever other cards you have on board and it also feeds your reanimator strategy as well.

One card i really like for The Haunt is Trepanation Blade. All the cards milled give him counters, a power buff, and it's a cheap pick up :)
Trepanation Blade would be sick with this guy! The right scenario and he could swing for lethal.
Especially where you play against the professor where it always mills at least 6

Before watching: I'm making a haunt of high tower deck, I'm actually running discard payoffs like lili's caress , waste not and geths grimoire. As well as the specters, uguros feels surprisingly good once he gets going and sewer nemesis also is amazing. Discard is a deck I've always loved and I can't wait to see DJ's take on it. Edit after watching: Yes ! Great idea's I like the direction your going. I'm not on the mill plan but it's a fun idea! Great video DJ.

I built this focusing discard and mill. I threw in enough equipment to keep THoHT protected. In my experience, haunt does enough “voltronning” on his own, when supplemented by discard and mill. The worst part of it becomes tracking all your triggers. Resolving Viscious Rumors with Megrim and Mindcrank out is a headache. Lol.

gammaant78 I actually cannibalized the deck recently to build Kroxa, but those look like good adds for a casual meta. My meta has been getting more competitive lately so I splashed red for world gorger dragon combo. Haunt is always a slow deck: you’re waiting until like turn 6 or 7 before you’re swinging in. Big black mana is a somewhat expensive archetype because you really need cabal coffers and nykthos, but a mono black beat down deck sounds metal and fun. Make sure to run your thran dynamos.

I'm surprised you didn't mention mindcrank. It meels for a lot, and it even gives you a way to combo on this deck.
By the way, you can play a bit on the fact the this is a huge lifelinker. Sanguin Bond, for example, practicly gives your commander double strike. It also works with bloodchief ascention and sangromancer.
I am so excited about the card advantage in this deck. Geth's Grimwoar was not on my radar. Thanks for this tech DJ.

I like this list simply put. Its very budget friendly and i can see where you can add in upgrades and change how you see fit with it.
It is The Black Forgotten Ancient. You can just slam it and pass turn. By the time it gets back to your turn, it is a 6/6 but sometimes it is a 10/10.

Hey DJ great tech as always. May I recommend something a bit off theme? Haunted Cloak gives vigilance trample haste for an equip cost of 1. Hastey Tramply Hightower is happy Hightower
would you play Dark ritual here to ramp out your commander? you can get him out on turn 4 with it
I play with it and it is awesome to get it out early. And if you can enchant him so he has hexproof it is such a beast
You can be attacking with him on turn 2 with a great hand. Sol ring to greaves, turn 2 ritual, play him and equip and start making somebody sad 😅
I think this card can pair really well with Syr Konrad, the Grim. Anytime another creature dies or a creature card is milled or discarded, it can start pinging your opponents for quite a lot of damage.

Been looking at getting Hazoret edh. Your hazoret video joke about 99 mountains sold me so you made tcgplayer 50 bucks. Key to the City is the mvp from the first few games.

I would take out just two cards, just so I could add Blackblade Reforged and Sword of the Animist. Those cards are great for any black Voltron deck.
Put Blackblade Reforged on Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign.
In Commander even without Mill that second ability is Awesome :D

Excuse me, are you overlooking the value of stuffing the deck with cards that burn your life total to the ground? Necropotence? Price of Power? Anything that generates hella value for nearly killing yourself? Dude! It's lifelink on a usually huge creature in mono-black! XD
And then if you're paying so much life you might have found a home for the new font of agonies.

Weird you didn't mention Mind Crank (despite being in the decklist), it can be an amazing card! Especially with Bloodchief Ascension (when its online) for an instant kill.

I failed to mention one thing it does not matter how they lose their life as long as they lose life they still got to put those cards from top of Library into graveyard for losing that life but not you the person who played mindcrank

Here is a card that I included in my list that I have noticed you haven't it seems
Mindcrank
2 mana artifact, whenever an OPPONENT loses life, they mill that many cards
I have had several games where I just play Mindcrank and my opponents just weren't paying attention to my Haunt just growing and growing as they just attacked each other
by the end of the game my Haunt was a 60+/60+
I even threw in some enchantments that discourages my opponents from attacking into me with No Mercy and even Dread
For what it's worth, Mindcrank also goes infinite with an active Bloodchief Ascension.
I thinking about a discard combo with Mindslicer and Otherworld Atlas to fuel a +1/+1 counter engine for The Haunt of Hightower

I've read almost all the comments about mindcrank but the one thing they failed to mention it's not you that's putting cards in from the top of your library in the graveyard it's everybody else it's when they lose that life it doesn't matter what opponent is attacking what opponent they still got to put that many cards in from the top of their Library into the graveyard but not you
Would Mortivore or Nighthowler slow down the deck or give more a threat?
the haunt is banana's, it gets out of control at ridiculous speeds. Though i am not a fan of winning the voltron way (casual playgroup with no infintes or infect)

I thought you still paid the commander tax when playing from hand? I might be wrong, so please correct me if I am
903.8. A player may cast a commander they own from the command zone. A commander cast FROM THE COMMAND ZONE costs an additional {2} for each previous time the player casting it has cast it FROM THE COMMAND ZONE that game. This additional cost is informally known as the “commander tax.”
This is the only reference to commander tax, so casting in any other way follows normal rules and doesn’t interact with the rules in this paragraph in any way. That’s why command tower is so good.
Notably, this only cares about casting (including alternate casting costs) but not about abilities that “put your commander into play” (not the same as casting). Yuriko and Derrevi have such abilities.
You only pay commander tax when recasting from the command zone. That's one reason why the god creatures from Hour of Devestation are so powerful as commanders.

nekusar isnt a discard commander, he is a wheel commander. think about it, your goal isnt to empty your opponents hands and keep it that way, your goal is to make them draw cards. sure you get plenty of value from megrim and things like that, but thats just because a lot of the big draw effects that happen for all players are wheel of fortune type cards. when you play against him, sure, your worried about your hand in the sense that they will probably wheel and i will lose these cards i want and i cant plan for the future really well. but you are not ever worried about being empty handed like you would be if it was an actual discard commander. just look at edhrec, half the cards that most people use just draw everybody cards and the other half of the cards are wheel effects. there are very few cards (if any) in a nekusar deck that just make you discard. so in my mind he is not a discard commander.
Dread Summons says each player doesn't that include the caster?
Yes but hightower only gets counters when cards go to opponents' gys so the self mill is somewhat irrelevant.

I am intrigued but discard strategies basically stop other people from playing the game and that's basically the reason why I dislike stax or mass land destruction. On the other hand pretty much every deck draws a shit load of cards nowadays...

Mindcrank anyone? Whenever you deal incidental damage to your opponents, they mill that many cards....also, I think, goes infinite with Bloodchief's Ascension.

There is no way I am going to pay 15 bucks for a overwhelming forces when I can play in garruks wake for for like a dollar. Just saying I like the decklist though very fun.
Paul Rhoades just lacks the card draw but there’s so many other ways to draw cards in black. Plus Garrick’s wake hits PW as well I believe

For 6 mana there are so many better commanders
which is exactly why we'd run this one. jankyness is key
I like it in the 99. It's good in atraxa or a janky bolas discard deck
