David Weissman's WE WERE HERE revisits the San Francisco of the '80s and '90s, using the city's experience with AIDS to open up a conversation about both the history of the epidemic and the lessons to be learned from it. Yet the film reaches far beyond San Francisco and beyond AIDS itself as it illuminates the power of a community that comes together with love, compassion, and determination.
Offering an intensely personal account of five individuals whose lives were forever transformed by the tragedy of AIDS, WE WERE HERE offers a hauntingly beautiful tribute to an era of tremendous suffering, loss, and resilience.

this documentary should be freely available on RUclips, David Weissman should be ashamed for having free ones removed. Peoples lives and memories about such an important topic that is this rare should not cost anything.

Very well said my friend. This should be on a public platform for free. This story needs to be told. Especially to the community. Stand tall and act up! So much going on right now in US.

I am so glad I watched this move. I am one of those people that to this day walks around uninflected, still missing ALL of my closets friends, in a chronic state of depression and didn't even know it until now. I am what Ned speaks about; The Hungry Ghost. Someone who has suffered a tremendous amount of loss and still walks the earth. Whew. ;( that's tough to finally find a name of what I have been suffering from and what I am. I am relieved.

Honey lamb....I NEVER knew that's called what WE HAVE! I JUST read this comment when I saw the link from his recording on Snap Judgement~Love and HIV is its title. It didn't say it had been released already, just this link to come here. NONE of my NYC friends OR Long Island NY are around either babe. The only person I've got left miraculously and who I've recently reconnected with is my former fiancee. He & I had a horrendous/beautiful/crazy first love that went on & off for almost 20 yrs~we met at 13. He became sick, then went full blown, then A LOT of so-called friends deserted us...I'm sure you know how that felt to be ostracized. He'd also had issues with prison and they'd tried putting him into a prison boot camp program~I fought the NYSDOCS in Albany with my advocacy to get him moved out of it. He'd already lost over 1/3rd of his lung prior to this so I took my fight to the Medical Review Board in Albany. Believe me they had ZERO sympathy for someone who was bi and had a drug history BUT TOUGH SHIT~I was a baby advocate then and I was not going to let go of him and let them kill him in there cyz they were giving him shitty meds too back then inside their prisons. I was like ohhh nooo muthafuckers...here we go cuz the shit is on and I'll see you with more paperwork in Albany again. I told him recently that he IS the main reason I continued my advocacy work as my sideline. He's a long time progressor and has been at zero detectable as of a few minths ago. He did get married awhile go & has since divorced and they had a son and daughter. Both healthy kids, his son is 22, his daughter just turned 17 and graduated HS this June. In the beginning when there was just that fucked up AZT cocktail that's what they gave him. He went on and off it a few times because it made him wirse abd he said it felt like he was putting freaking battery acid & damn gasoline or some shit in my body were his words. That was one of our big battles, the prison shit and the drugs~I WAS NO angel either so that needs to be said. Eventually cheating came into our picture with thst girl and he left me to married HER. I did clean my act up, then I lost MANY YRS clean and now I've got 16 yrs BACK clean this coming October. I've been lucky to never contract it and we FINALLY spoke last month. We had like a 2 hour talk & a lot of it was asking about our old friends and who I was still in contact from up here~He's in Florida. So much of it was how this 1 or that 1 didn't make it through EVEN AFTER they got onto their meds. He's still struggling with some of his drug and legal issues, some clinic diwn there glitch has him off the Medicaid rolls for his meds. I'm an international prisoners advocate for OVER 30yrs now. I deal eith EVERY level of the system from my juveys to my ppl on Death Row nationally. I deal with Innocence Project ,Witness To Innocence, U.N., Amnesty International cases that go in front of SCOTUS. I deal with a lot of groups that advocate for the LGBTQ community inside. I became a NON Denomination Minister too so I can now go into ANY jail or prison in this country to have confidential visits just like their attys do. 😎 I told him listen you know I ALWAYS LOVE YOU, nothing will ever change that betwen us. I CAN'T get your ass outta prison IF you fuck up & violate your prison cuz you're acting stupid but I can make sure you get good meds and they move you into better prisons if you keep off the fight lists in there & move you closer to your mothers house so she can visit you. I can try to see who I can try to use to reach out to those clinics down there. I'm not too sure cuz that's your state versus mine BUT I MIGHT be able to get 1 of those individual free clinics IF I can find one down there to shove your name into their rolls even they're overloaded with ppl for a few months till this crap gets straightened out with Florida's Medicaid~it's worth a shot to make sine calls to some orgs there yk? I'M hearing a lotta stories of my ppl in Florida getting jammed up when they come outta jail & prison with their Medicaid & Medicare~if ppl had it prior or they're going into shelters sibce their release this IS 2B set up by the DOCS prior to release in every stare BTW. This is due to our "vacgrancy laws"~Medicaid goes in habd with the housing & food stamp voucher for the first night out. NO housing ~you violate your Parole or Probation that night~see? Yeah, so then therrs that ON TOP of how my LGBTQ former prisoners might NOT be getting their meds on the outside. One part of this application doesnt feed into their system right~the whole thing can bounce out. So as for him, I joked you ARE telling me about your case! I was 1/2way thru a Paralegal degree b4 I became disabled so when he said I'm on probation & I said what for? His answer ohhh that is just some B.S. after his other stories of other things, this was not a sufficient answer for me so I told him~you want to hear abiut an appeal your crappy court appointed atty probably DIDN'T DO FOR YOU OR NOT cuz you're still ON this crap right? Then lemme hear this bullshit cuz I eat case laws for breakfast now honey! LOL! Sooo...this ended with a big heartfelt apology from him actually and a lot of thank yous "for all the love you gave me over the years"~which I didn't expect at all! We shared a LOTTA laughs on our call and some tears over our lost friends. Some hope for the fight for thise that still need it including him with his meds versus these states screwing up their systems repeatedly. Medicaid & Medicare AS a system around for disabled ppl has been around for decades to help ppl so there shoiod be no SNAFUS anymore~they continually seem to be with our communities applications for some reason though & that is an issue I've dealt with for AT LEAST a decade in my work with reentry. I'm going to say something to you and it might sound strange~even mire so than my free writing and laying bare about my feelings here about my first love like the story of Daniels and his friends. But I've got no issue telling anyone abiut me & Rob~he was a huge part of my life and part of my drug history when we were younger so it's NOT like a shitload of ppl haven't heard about him in my N.A. meetings! Theres no shame in my game honey! LOL! I hope that some of the depression you feel gets moved towards something positive for you. I DO umderstand for me it finally has a NAME now. I hope you tske your memories of your friends and take hold of your ghost...MAKE IT in a small way your friend~ppl DO need to know about our cokkectuve loss you see? Bring thst furwsrs to the consciousness of others BUT bring it along with IN your other habd ALL THE memories of smiles and your friends great laughter that you have echoing in yiur head, all of the absolute wonderfulness that WAS THEM! Don't let both your arms wrap around yourself in those feelings of depression my new friend. You've got two hands and one loud voice to make sure that THEY ARE HEARD! I know that you always keep your friends in your mind and heart always~they were bigger than that that to be kept just there IF that makes sense? Have you thought about buying a STAR collectively for them and naming it that only mean somethjng to all of you? Check into the Star Registry~that way you can always look up into the skies on some of the nights when you might be feeling kinda heavy in your heart. You'll look up and be thinking hey there you guys are shining just like you did cuz you guys rocked while you were here. You will never be alone~they'll always be there just waiting for you to look at their true brilliance man you see what I mean? Wishing you Peace, Love and ALL GOOD THINGS in all you do always new friend! ❤❤❤

Never been so moved. Actual heroes during actual discrimination. The activists today are hellbent on driving the movement off a cliff.
