    New enclosure and shop lighting look great. Never can have too much light and keeping the chips off the keyboard and workbenches must be nice.

    hi Craig
    Use only half the diameter, which is safer.Imagine your Cutter is a fan, you have milled that both sides have milled.So the fan was braked from both sides.(full diameter has milled)The spindle motor needs a bit of time to get some momentum.The cutter takes the power out of his momentum you do not have a 10kw spindle that's how it works.look at your crash the first cut from right to left worked and looked good too (Milling clockwise and half the diameter)and the chips can fly away .Then you have milled counterclockwise and full diameter.The result was: The chips were pushed into the material the milling cutter rpm slowed down andthe cutter was lifted left and right up down.(you did not see it but it happened your R8 collet has given way)In German """knack kaputt""" the cutter edge is broken. You can go a little deeper but only counterclockwise or clockwise and only half of the diameter.That's just physics an apple will always fall down.I always get a headache when you destroy very expensive tools.Please buy a book for metalworking something from a professional school or so....there are rules in there.....notice the.....
    I hope I could help you
    best wishes Stephan

      Thanks Stephan. I was at 67% step over on the 2nd pass. I was under the assumption that I could go 70% with a facemill. I guess I will have to do some more studying. Yeah, I guess a spiral toolpath would be better than a square so I am always going one way. Thanks again!

      I have the experience for roughing material against the cutting edge then the chips fly away and it gets quieter.For finish cut with the material then the surface becomes more beautiful but never more than 50% step over that is safer but I am one of the better boring finds because it's cheaper for me.
      I have a few questions for you! because We in Europe have no Tormach
      How flat and rectangular is the surface of the table to the spindle?
      And how many baklash have the axles?
      And what I want to get rid of:(that is not your fault) the TTS system is the big weak point of the Tormach .....
      this is sometimes a collet in a collet not nice because a collet is not suitable for roughing
      best regards and I am happy when your next video comes hopefully the door of your enclosure

      @@stephang516 I don't have the stand so I can't tram the Tormach completely. I can usually get parts within .001-.002" My main production isn't tolerance sensitive, just electrical covers. Haven't checked the backlash in a while. Less than .001" I think. Yeah, the TTS system isn't great, but good enough for a 1-1.5 HP spindle I think. Regular endmills have feeds, speeds and step over recommendations from the manufacturer. I haven't found that for facemills and indexable endmills. Thanks, hope to get the enclosure door parts soon.

    The inserts you have for 100$ are for steel. The aluminum ones are 187$. I would suggest flood coolant for better finish & higher speeds. Inserts labeled "Mitsubshi" from China ? Suspect. Mits stuff used to be all sourced in Japan. 100 ipm ? 40 to 60 ipm and I am not pushing the machine or breaking tooling. Cool tests though !

    Did pretty good, might try ebay for Chinese inserts for your face mill there like 1/10th the cost and are plenty good for roughing away material

    If you are looking for MRR look at the 2in shear hog that tormach sells I have been able to get 6ci MRR with the 1100

    Buy the 2 flute modular toroidal cutter and run it at 6k. It can also do 3.5in/min.

    Very interesting, especially that the screws can break! Are you maintaining a website that summarizes your current tool recommendations? That could be really nice, table summary with links to related videos. Are the horsepower numbers calculated estimates or measured? I use the same tool on a smaller machine and use a power meter to empirically find milling parameters, typically running this tool at 600W with occasional spikes to 1kW on a 750W rated spindle. Best wishes

    • @craigsmachineshop2040
      @craigsmachineshop2040  5 лет назад

      Yeah, I was surprised about the screws. That's a good idea. I own the domain. Maybe I will try a free WIX site. The HP figures are based on G-Wizard. What kind of MMR are you getting?

    • @kentvandervelden
      @kentvandervelden 5 лет назад

      @@craigsmachineshop2040 I've never calculated MMR. Perhaps I'm looking at the metric wrong, but if one uses spindle load as an indication of reserve capacity that is an empirical measurement that includes tool and machine condition at that time. Maybe MMR would be useful if considering a new machine or tool? MMR can be empirical too, but less practical to measure by the controller.

    • @craigsmachineshop2040
      @craigsmachineshop2040  5 лет назад

      @@kentvandervelden Sorry, its MRR. Not sure why I kept calling it MMR. I guess I had my daughters vaccinations on my mind. LOL I guess I think about MRR a lot because I want to be able to remove material faster to reduce run time. Making large dies requires removing a lot of material.

    Exactly the same as the tormach one with about 1/4" shorter gauge length. I have both and I started buying modular cutters from that guy on eBay since I can leave aluminum inserts setup and get a second one for steel inserts. They fit the tormach arbors perfectly and are 1/4 the cost.

      @@craigsmachineshop2040 yup same inserts just like the face mill. Apkt1135. Don't buy the inserts from Tormach as they charge insane prices. My local tooling supply has a box of ten inserts for $10-$50 depending on brand and style/coating.
      Shipping took about a week and a half for me. Pretty much everytime eBay does a 10% code I pick up another style. It's just easier to leave inserts installed and switch the heads.
