I'm good with not being a millionaire. I just want to be happy and be able to provide for my kids and I to live comfortably with the least amount of stress as possible 😊
I started to make handmade bath products just a few years ago as a creative outlet and also to sell them, but I was already in my late 50’s. Now I’m 61 and although I love creating pretty bath products that sell, I have had to be honest with myself; I don’t have the level of energy I had when I was younger! My husband is in his 60’s too and still working full-time so if a get great sales one month but only a few sales the next, I’m not sweating it financially. And being realistic about what “season” in life you’re in is very important too. At this point in my life, I could CARE LESS about being a person who has a soap business that makes “millions”, but that’s just me at this time in my life. Trying to have a very busy business sounds EXHAUSTING to me. Other handmade soapers are in a season where they have that energy and drive to pull it off, but I’ll happily be on the sidelines rooting you on while I make my small batches of soap!
Me too!! I love seeing the super busy soap owners killing it! They’re such an inspiration and I’m glad they’re also sharing the possibilities if you do decide to pursue that kind of business model .
ALL the feels with this video! If we hustle to do all the popular things that every other maker is doing too, then what exactly makes us unique? And that's where I'm at now, finding MY way in this soapiness thing.
It continues to be a pleasure to follow you as you grow in your business. I truly admire your desire to create new products and grow as a creative artist. Money is not everything. Wishing you and Cale all the best! ❤
Thank you! This spoke to me 100%. I fell into the toxic hustle culture with my handmade small business. We eventually rented a space (too expensive) and hired employees (payroll and and taxes killed us) because that's what I thought I was supposed to do, to scale up. The employees didn't fill orders well. They didn't care like I did. Mistakes were being made. They'd argue with each other and I found myself playing referee instead of being creative. The county was horrible about permits, never returning calls. I quickly burned out. I didn't close my business, instead I leased my space to someone else (I still had a year left on the lease) and let the lazy employees go except one good one. Today, we are doing great. Just me and one person, out of the extra space in my home. We make enough money and the stress is less. No more mistakes either. Happy customers. Thank you for verbalizing this! I agree 100%! You are doing GREAT!
It takes courage to stay true to yourself. You got it! I read a book and it says you will learn about yourself when you have a business. This is true eh? The world needs your true self and the exhibition of your self through what you love. Hugs from a fellow Canadian girly. Go Jerika! May this journey lead you to find your best self of pure beauty... to give to the world. God bless.
I needed this today. The pressure to “hustle” and to “go viral” is real. I find myself chasing that every day but then when I really think about it, it’s not what I want for my small business. I just want to create things and share them with others that love them just as much as I do. I was busting my butt, staying up late at night creating more and more listings because you’re told that you need MORE. My husband finally sat me down and told me that I needed to take my time and find some balance because I wasn’t doing anything other than working on my business and I was burning out between orders and trying to make more things. So I did. I slowed down, and I’m also trying to get away from that “hustle” mentality. I started my business because it gives me joy, and I don’t want to ruin that.
Hi, Jerika. I started a little late to the game. I started dabbling in making baskets for Christmas gifts few years back and realized I wanted to make more professional products. I’ve been following you and several other formulators. I’m turning 61 in April. I really enjoy creating but I’m only now getting to the point where I’m looking into making soap ( I did take a small class at voyager a 1 1/2 ago learn how to make soap, but was a little intimidated. I need to jump in and actually make some.) anyways, love and enjoy watching your channel, all the best to you and Caleb.
Seven years in and with your experiences, I am making good decisions about my business. It started out as curiosity and then making for the fun of it, then selling because that's fun, too. It is an up and down business and one that my tiny community appreciates, but it does not sustain my business and replacement of base products. I just got my first very small wholesale order and I feel like right now, its a thing I can handle single-handedly. Listening to you today really struck home. I want to stay small but make some extra money but not a lot so I don't get burned out. This small business will have to be on my terms!!! Thank you Jerika
I was running my soap business nonstop by myself for 3 years and although I was increasing sales each year, I got so burnt out trying to keep up with the demand and the need to make money. I took last year off and now I’m ready to get back in the game again and do it my way. No need to rush myself or get burnt out again. I love making soaps and it was hard to even think about it anymore because it became a chore and not fun anymore.
Your content has always been important to the community. But I am so proud of you for opening up about what you want your business to be FOR YOU. It’s always been pushed on us to be bigger and bigger, like that is the only notion of success. To me success means staying as happy as you can in your life. And that looks different for everyone. I’m a bit like you, slowing down and making beautiful products because I feel like it and want to share with others. All this to say thank you for showing the community that success means different things and that the goal should be to be happy.
Great video. I started this mentality last year before the rebranding. I have made soap for years and if I can make a few bucks I am good with that. “It’s never enough.”
Thank you for this! Very relevant for what is going on in my business. My mother in law passed away at the end of October and the beginning of the Christmas hustle. I pushed through, injured my neck, and burned out. Then in mid January I was back at it again only to have my dad pass away at the end of January. Since then I’ve lost all motivation. Gathering the strength needed to push forward has been tough, I’ve thought of throwing in the towel but I really do love it so much. Allowing oneself some grace and healing in whatever burnout is happening to you is so important. And even more important is to plan so that the burnout doesn’t happen. I know that Christmas is my busy season, which is why I’m planning for it now. I love the markets at that time of year and want to enjoy them. Good luck to everyone and remember why you got into this in the first place. 💜💜💜
Love natural colorants. I also love the tellervo vibes you’ve been giving in your recent videos and still talking. It’s refreshing and look forward to seeing your work. 😍

I agree with you. You have to do what you love - it's your business and if you don't love what you do - your customers will notice. I had an accountant say to me once (via email), that my 'business' was a 'hobby'..... Whilst, from her perspective (ie, I wasn't earning enough to warrant making a tax return), in the eyes of the law - it would be viewed as a hobby still...but she could have worded it in a nicer way. However words fuelled me to prove her wrong. Whenever I feel like giving up, her words come to my mind. My business has been a somewhat slow burner, for many years, but I'm now able to give it the attention it needs to drive it forward. I have made more sales in the last 4 months, than I have in 6 years. I have a sign on my workroom wall, it says 'Do it for the people who want to see you fail'. There's a lot of toxic comments floating around and we need to just put them to one side and follow our heart, it will take time - but eventually, things start to make sense and come together. I wish you all the very best for the next release. The products look beautiful x
Yes! I use only natural colors and infusing indigo in oil gets the best color for me! I also make different shades using blue and green clay (teal) as well as adding a little charcoal to make variations! ❤❤ Do your thing!! You are a natural creator and encourager. 😊
Ive found indigo goes a navy denim type colour whether infused for 6months in oil or added at time of making cold processed soap mixed first with oil, If adding too much it does turn the water when washing blue although washes off its not the result i want. It mine dud darken once cured. Others seem to get prettier blues and Holly Kapiera Mera even pink. Because of that its my least favourite natural product, although with aloe juice as liquid portion and just a wee bit it gives a lovely very pale jade looking soap. As you say all trial and experimentation

I'm loving the clays to color the scrubs! My indigo always ends up a blue gray, too. I like it, but it's just not the denim blue i see other soapers get.

On camera it’s a green gray, but it’s beautiful hun. Very pretty. Try infusing it in oil and letting it sit for 6 weeks. I guarantee it is worth it. That’s how it feels by oils and then like every two weeks I change out like the botanicals or the herbs which you can’t do that with the powder which is fine because it’s a powder but I’ve seen someone else do it for that long, and the color was so vivid and strong. It was gorgeous.
All I have ever desired was enough money to pay my bills and take a vacation once in a while. I was hoping to size up slowly and dive in after I retire, well the business model in my industry changed on Friday, now I think my timeline has been moved up.
Yes, every small business owner has the ability to dial it up or down as they see fit. It’s knowing when to make those adjustments that keep the growth healthy and sustainable ❤
Natural indygo is very hard to find nowadays. You’re sure it’s the one? On the contarary the blue dye indygotina is proven to have bad irritating effect on skin and lungs. In EU where every cosmetic needs to have licence - you would’t get awat with it. Unless is natural.
I only know what the soap supplier chooses to say about it. I heard the cosmetic laws in EU are very strict! Canada is similar: I had to submit each formula to the government.
Two years in... of course I am not making much money. However, I am happy! I love experimenting and coming up with new aromas and products. I do of course want to make money. Hoping I can do both... be happy And make money.
Jerika, you have been unhappy since you left Midland. It's time to get out of the house! Time to meet people! You need a connection. Don't go down the rabbit hole. You might get stuck. Also, who said it's not a business unless you make money? The saying I remember from years ago is that if your business doesn't make money, you bought yourself a job.
Aw thank you! We had a truly beautiful spring day today with sunshine and it was AWESOME! As for happiness, I’m pretty happy 😊. Midland was where my mental health was at an all time low, though I loved living there too.
@JerikaZimmerman Calgary was a hard move for you. I lived in the west (BC), and it took a long time to adjust. That being said, after 10 years, I made some wonderful friends I miss dearly. Been back in Ontario for 21 years, moved to 2 different towns. Moving around is very difficult mentally.
12 years ago I started in direct sales & it really pushed the hustle/millionaire/sleep when you're dead vibe. I kept up with it for a while before coming to my senses. Now, I'm still in direct sales (and real estate) and LOVE my work because I choose to do it gently, authentically, and with a lot of joy. I am SO grateful more people are learning to enjoy entrepreneurship without this unhealthy mindset. It *is* possible!
what? doing anything in excess or in an unsustainable way is going to have negative effects on a person. I don't even know why you would say such a thing
Very insightful, as with all creatives there is a flow of creativity that comes upon us and when we are in it, you can carry on with products even though your not really feeling it, but when you are having to make the same soap over and over it gets boring and feels like work, and you can't just walk away for a few months LOL.
Yes, it’s so important to listen to ourselves and dial down or up as we need. Im really glad to see you’re on the mend. Sending you so much healing love, girl❤

The scrubs are so pretty.
Thank you!
I do find i enjoy more what i do when im doing it for myself. But its very stressful when im doing it to sell. I dont enjoy it then
Yep! This is so true for many of us!
I’m good with having a hobby that’s becoming a small business. So, when I retire, I’ll have something to do!
Absolutely! ❤
I just like making things, the formulating drives me crazy! I wish I could just make things and not have to worry about the rest.
I hear you! ❤
Be beautiful you, Jerika!
Will do!! ❤
HI! Can I ask where you get your botanicals? Thank you
They’re linked in the description 😊
@@JerikaZimmerman I'm sorry. I looked again and don't see them.
Two years in... of course I am not making much money. However, I am happy! I love experimenting and coming up with new aromas and products. I do of course want to make money. Hoping I can do both... be happy And make money.
Wonderful! This is the way I think is the most sustainable - slow and steady growth.
@JerikaZimmerman I think so too.
If you're not enjoying it, it's not worth it. Make what you love the best you possibly can and people will buy it.
Well said! Life is too short ❤
❤❤❤❤
😊❤
“Gently, authentically and with joy” resonated DEEP with me ❤
You were in the wrong business. This wasn’t your most truest passion.
Thank you for the feedback! ❤
what? doing anything in excess or in an unsustainable way is going to have negative effects on a person. I don't even know why you would say such a thing
Very insightful, as with all creatives there is a flow of creativity that comes upon us and when we are in it, you can carry on with products even though your not really feeling it, but when you are having to make the same soap over and over it gets boring and feels like work, and you can't just walk away for a few months LOL.
the way I related so much with this video!
this was so beautiful 🥲
i’m glad you are making products for you now! i need to do this more too
Yes, it’s so important to listen to ourselves and dial down or up as we need. Im really glad to see you’re on the mend. Sending you so much healing love, girl❤
