    I live near Salt Lake City, Utah and a school bus accident on Dec 1, 1938 at a train crossing, is the reason drivers must open the door to look for trains before they can proceed over the tracks. 23 students and the driver were killed.

    I am from Prestonsburg and I had read where this hit the town so hard the local radio station here on that day halted its format of the current Country and Western hits of that day and for the entire duration of the search and rescue they only played Hymns and Gospel songs with pastors from all over the area praying on the air in between songs for the families and the rescue and recovery teams. It was said the last of the children recovered were found miles down the river from the crash site. Thank you for honoring and respecting those who perished that day.

    It was probably in 1962(?) I was in third grade and my mother used to make me take a rope to school to be able to climb out of the building if it was ever on fire because there was a big fire in Chicago for the elementary school where the children were trapped . Did you ever hear about that?

    • @bobandangelamatia1164
      @bobandangelamatia1164 Год назад

      That fire took place on December 1, 1958. It happened at Our Lady of the Angels School in Chicago, IL. Ninety-two children and three Catholic nuns died in that horrific event. There were many documentaries made about the event and one of the books that was written about it is titled To Sleep with the Angels: The Story of a Fire.
      That fire changed building fire codes.

    R. I. P to those 27 lives that were cut short, because of a terrible accident. May their family receive comfort in the way that you lovingly told their story.
    Chris, you were amazing and so empathetic to this story, that it made me go and read as much as I could about it. According to what I found out was there was a similar terrible bus accident that happened in 1988 when a former school bus turned church bus was heading back to Kentucky from an Ohio theme park was hit head on by a drunk driver that caused the church bus to burst into flames and also killed 26 young people plus the driver, which is a huge reason that all school buses in KY have 9 emergency exits today. 4 window exits, 2 roof exits, the rear exit, the front exit & an additional exit door on the side of the bus.

    I remember my Grandparents talking about this growing up. Mamaw had an old newspaper clipping she kept in her Bible. What's sad is that these floods are still hitting our area. At Dewey Dam steps it has all of our floods marked. Gives you an idea just how big the waters have gotten here. So sad. Couldn't imagine.

    This needed photos or video of the accident event and/or victims (which are available). Nine minutes of looking at a cemetery doesn't cut it, and it's hard to capture the poignancy without brining it to "life."

      I’m sorry you don’t feel that I brought the story to life. And having photos or videos available doesn’t mean they are available to me. I was standing at the gravesites of those lost in this tragedy. That may not be poignant to you. But it is to me.

      @@Whittdocs A difference of opinion, that's all. To me, gravestones are just granite. The children aren't there -- they're elsewhere now. Granite doesn't capture their essence, but photos do. And to see the bus, the parents, the rescue efforts, conveys the pathos of the event far more than a memorial slab. But if you can't access the photos, etc. then there's nothing more you can do. At least some of the gravestones had photos.

    I use to live right across that river in Goble Roberts. Passed that site where the bus crashed everyday. We never looked or talked about it. My step dad's cousin pulled a few kids out. She was on that bus. He was related somehow to most of the kids who died. Also you pronounced Levisa Fork wrong. It's pronounced with a long I. La vie sa.

    To be honest, I'm not so sure I could go on after such a loss. Waiting for them all to come home from school but they never do. Walking past their rooms. The holidays. I just don't think I could handle it.
