  • The world was a different place in 2003. The choice between film and digital photography was not just being made by photographers, but by normal everyday people for their everyday snapshots. Let's take a look at the choice the someone in 2003 might make.
    In the video I compare a Canon Sure Shot 80u film point and shoot camera with an HP Photosmart 935 digital point and shoot camera. Fujifilm 200 film vs a 5.3MP sensor behind Pentax glass. We take a look not just at the results, but the experience of shooting these cameras as well.

    Man, it’s great to see you return to content creation. Such an in-depth, superbly edited video showing the comparison. I do prefer the look of film more than digital. Seeing you develop film was a throwback for me (as always) to when I worked in a photography store and did that. “1 hour photo”…that’s a term I haven’t heard in ages, but a nostalgia trip for sure. Phenomenal video man!

      Thank you, it means a lot! That stark transition from film being the default to being a choice to being antiquated is very interesting to me. I'm old enough to remember the begining of the consumer digital camera.

    Man this takes me back when I remembered one of my family members bought a Digital camera back in 2003. Seeing it for the first time as a kid was awe-inspiring for me. Just to see that there's a tiny digital screen that has a menu AND you can navigate it was really incredible. My family back then mainly used those classic Kodak cameras for the majority of our picture shots to slap on to our photo album and it really was the norm to take your rolls and take it to a store to have them processed. It may sound like an inconvenience by modern standards, but if you went to a grocery store that allows you to send photos that need to be processed, it wasn't that bad. We really have come a long way since then.
    But thank you for making this video man! This certainly was a nostalgic trip!

      I'm really happy you liked it! Things make sense in hindsight, but it's very different in the moment.

    Have to say the film shots came out best overall with the colour and retro look in my opinion. The digital definitely has the convenience factor though which is sometimes hard to beat. Great to see you back making content again 🙂

      Thank you! Happy to be back. Yes, I love the look of film. It was interesting taking a look at really the tipping point from film to digital.

    You and I definitely differ on what qualifies as an “Epic” night out!
    I’ll take the digital all day long. Sure the film looked better, but the shooter who carried a cheap consumer film camera often took blurry, unfocused shots of thumbs. I was that person. I had no desire to lug around a big cam and less desire to learn how to use it, but lots of disappointment when my pics came back bad.
    Along comes a digital cam that might be subpar (only on direct comparison), but I I’m instantly sure I captured the moment my kid took his first steps. Like a Polaroid, but forever!!
    I would love to see you jump in a Delorean and go back to 1816 and compare the first camera to a canvas.
    Overall I sighed at the length, but was ultimately entertained the whole way and interested in the narrative. So great job.

      Painters with camera obscura is a really interesting topic actually. I was hoping that the length was somewhat mitigated by changing of locations and a flow from one topic to the other. Shooting this video really putting perspective how badly Kodak got it wrong. Digital really made the most sense for the majority of people much earlier than I thought. I also have to hand it to Kodak though for managing to keep film alive and even recently reintroducing new film stocks.

    Took a while to get around to this video, but I love the setup at the beginning. Everything from the Vice City reference to Matrix: Reloaded it perfectly frames both the video & the culture at that time. I remember selling a lot of these early digital cameras from working at Best Buy during that time & it really shows how that era was transitionary in so many ways for photography.

      Absolutely. Hard to imagine it now even living through it. Very curious on the viewpoint on someone who grew up on digital only photography

    I have away my PowerShot A20 to my father but he lent it back to me for a future video.

      Very cool. I still have my first digital camera which was a Canon. May shoot that soon.

    Hi! All my photos from the cannon sureshot has been out of focus. Is there a reason for this? How can u fix this?

    • @AdultsHaveToysToo
      @AdultsHaveToysToo  Год назад

      Oh, that could be a lot of things, and not many of them you can do a lot about. If the autofocus is broken there isn't much in the way of fixing it, but more often the issue is camera shake. These cameras have a narrow aperture. When you show low ISO film or in low light the shutter speed will be very low so a very steady hand or tripod is needed. Is it all photos or just some?

      @@AdultsHaveToysToo Thanj you so much for replying! I’m going on a trip tomorrow and really want to get this figured out. My first roll was mostly fine but the last two have been blurry with a few clear photos. I noticed that the ones that are in focus are the photos with closer objects. Sometimes, what is in focus is not what I want to be in focus. I can share some photos with you if you could give me an Instagram handle or email. I have spent so much money on the film, getting it developed, and the camera…I really don’t want to spend anymore on a new camera.

    • @annie8323
      @annie8323 Год назад

      I also didn’t use half way focusing for the last roll but that wasn’t a big issue for my first roll

    • @AdultsHaveToysToo

      @@annie8323 oh, I think I might know what that is. The auto focus will only focus on what is directly in the middle of the frame normally, so if your subject is off center then it will end up focusing on the background. You can fix this by putting the subject in the middle of the frame, half pressing, then recomposing where you want the subject to be before taking the shot. That should make the focus distance right.

    • @annie8323
      @annie8323 Год назад +1

      @@AdultsHaveToysToo when you say recompose, do you mean that I can move the camera and my subject can stand still or my subject can move while I stand still? Also, do I have to half press it while I recompose or can I let go?
