Cameo had a unique swagger and confidence that was present on all their records and especially visible in concert. Their live shows were dynamic and explosive. I had the pleasure of seeing them as part of the Kool Jazz Festival during the 80's.

Cameo had hits in the 70s, but they were modest. None of them were big like Word Up. Cameo really didn't take off until the 80s. In the 70s they were in the shadows of P-Funk & E, W & F.

It was a pivotal record that truly captured the changing spirit of the times more than any Prince, MJ or Madonna record could dream of even though they were supposed to define that era. It had all the old melody and kind of innocent charm of soul up to that point but also the new hip-hop energy that was initially dynamic and potent but for me began to degenerate around 87 into something ugly, materialistic, violent and sinister whereas soul and funk always had a grace and humility underpinning any surface macho posturings.
